Mochi Muffin Mini-Empire Third Culture Bakery Closes Down Final San Francisco Shop on Irving Street | Eater SF

Why Third Culture Bakery Might Take the Popular Mango-Passion Fruit Mochi Donut Off the Menu | Eater SF

"Operating as a chromed-out Berkeley shop with three locations across two states and another on the way, Third Culture Bakery is known for its signature mochi muffins, doughnuts, and matcha, and is run by co-owners Wenter Shyu and Sam Butarbutar. They say pandemic-driven supply-chain problems threaten their most popular item, the mango–passion fruit doughnut: the Hawaiian farm that supplies and purees the passion fruit didn't harvest in 2020 so there's no back stock, they've bought all available fruit but—selling about 20,000 mango–passion fruit doughnuts every month—are on track to run out by early November, at which point the doughnut will come off the menu. Substitutes are difficult because the farm also processes the fruit into puree, Third Culture stopped doing that in-house as it scaled, Butarbutar is "very particular" about the specific passion fruit they use, and potential suppliers must be able to ship to their California and Colorado locations. To stretch supplies they removed passion-fruit beverages from the menu, and other global supply issues have hit the business as well: a wholeship delay in the Suez Canal has driven up prices for quality allspice, Japanese matcha now takes almost a month to arrive instead of a week, and costs for takeout boxes, gloves, and parchment paper have doubled or tripled. Shyu says the passion-fruit problem "felt like I got punched in the face," but the team is pressing ahead with a matcha cafe opening in Walnut Creek that was delayed from August to an October target because of a fire-inspection hold—so there may still be some chewy mango–passion fruit doughnuts in the mix." - Lauren Saria

This little shop is an absolute delight. First let's talk about mochi donuts and their muffins. I got a lemon meringue muffin and it was soooo indulgent. It was a perfect baked texture on the outside and soft and perfectly fluffy on the inside. There was a dollop of lemon curd under the most wonderful meringue on top. It was like eating a slice of lemon meringue pie but better. Their donuts are just as perfectly made with a sweet, flavored icing of your choice. We got strawberry, guava and passion fruit. The donuts do run a bit on the sweet side and absolutely are delicious. We also enjoyed their matcha beverages. My wife got the blackberry matcha and I got the hot caramel matcha. It was absolutely amazing how the caramel matcha tasted. Toasted, caramel, umami goodness in a cup. It brought a grounding effect and joy instantly. Definitely worth a try!

What a paradise for gluten-free enthusiasts! Third Culture Bakery offers a delicious array of sweet treats in moderation, all completely gluten-free. Their fresh, gooey mochi muffins, doughnuts, and waffles are simply irresistible. My all-time favorite is the original mochi muffin and passion fruit mango doughnut—an absolute must-try! They also serve great hot and cold matcha beverages that complement the pastries beautifully. The staff is always friendly, and there's plenty of free parking and a seating area, making it a comfortable spot to relax. The only thing missing is a restroom, but overall, Third Culture Bakery is a gem for anyone looking for tasty, gluten-free options in Walnut Creek.

Google
The mochi muffins have a nice flavor, but the star is the texture! Super soft in the middle, but with a crust outside, get the best of both worlds. The pumpkin pie flavor was strong and not too sweet, nothing special but again, the texture is worth trying at least once!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Walnut Creek location of Third Culture Bakery, and it did not disappoint! As a long-time fan and customer of the awesome Berkeley location, I was excited to see how this new spot would measure up, and it exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I approached the bakery, the cool window signage caught my eye. The colorful and inviting holographic design is a warm welcome that perfectly encapsulates the bakery's commitment to aesthetics and attention to detail. It totally sets the tone for the delightful experience that awaits inside. Once inside, I was thrilled to find all the classic treats that I’ve come to love over the years. The mochi muffins, a variety of flavors of mochi donuts, and even mochi waffles were all available, and made it really hard to choose what to get. And of course everything is gluten free! I couldn’t resist indulging in a refreshing matcha sparkler, which was the perfect complement to my sweet treats. I loved exploring the adorable merchandise on display, which adds a fun touch to the overall experience. After picking out my goodies, I settled into their outdoor seating and relaxed under the sun. Third Culture Bakery's Walnut Creek location is absolutely delightful. The combination of yummy gluten free treats, thoughtful design, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a must-visit for anyone in the area. I can’t wait to return and indulge in more of their amazing offerings! Highly recommend! 🌟🍩✨

Google
OMG you HAVE to try their GF waffles! They come out with a new one all the time and I can’t wait for the next! Crunchy, chewy, soft, crispy.. all at the same time. Third Culture has truly perfected the art of gluten-free baking and needs to give lessons to everyone else who tries. I also know the owners are community-minded and generous people who treat their employees like family.

Google
I ordered nearly 300 mochi donuts from Third Culture for an event I was having, and they were FANTASTIC! We got a bunch of almost every flavor they offer, and they were all so good - our guests were raving about them and kept asking where we got them from. Their service was also wonderful, they were super responsive and fast, even with such a large order. Definitely would recommend!

Google
First time at this little unique tea/mochi spot. I tried the Carmel Pumpkin iced latte and the ube donut, they were both delicious. Next time I'm going to order something a little less sweet to drink, but I'm super excited to try all of the mochi donut flavors. Their waffles looked good as well. They have matcha, oolong and other teas on the shelves to buy. The vibe of this place was like nothing I've ever seen before the colors were vibrant, the inside lighting was brilliant and the color scheme was on point. Walking in I automatically felt like a million bucks! The person working the front was knowledgeable about all of the products and answered my questions about the different matcha teas they had.

Google
Update: I got three flavors today: ube-coconut, Pandan, and Yuzu Lemon. I really liked the Pandan they really captured that flavor onto the donut very well. I also picked up a couple more things on the menu. The banana mochi muffin bread and pumpkin mochi muffin, definitely recommended. Looks like they have updated added new mochi flavors and drinks to the menu. It’s my first time trying Third Culture and apparently they have been here for a month. They also have another store located in Berkeley. This one is located in Walnut Creek in a small shopping center. Not much parking but there is a parking lot. It was great to meet the owners Sam and Wenter, who gave us a history of how Third Culture came to be. I really liked the vibe they try to create with the store. From the color of the windows to the music they play. The store is quite small but cute, no seating inside. It's basically a store front, counter-serve bakery. They have several items for sale that you can take home with you. The Mochi donuts are very tasty, not too sweet and so many flavors to chose from. They also have Mochi muffins and Macha teas and coffee. I got the Ube, Mango, Macha, Chocolate and Strawberry Mochi donut; Also got the original and pumpkin Mochi muffin, last but not least we got Macha Tea and Caramel Coffee. Service: awesome service! Owner and staff were friendly. Price: I thought donuts and muffins were a bit pricey for the size of it. But the taste makes up for the prize.

Yelp
Never a bad time at Third Culture... I've been to the other locations and this one is always my go-to since it is closer to my parents' house when I'm visiting. The mochi items are so yummy and crave-able! I look forward to swinging by every time I am in the Bay Area. The matcha drinks are always on point, as well. My fav was when they had a guava lychee matcha latte, I still think about it from time to time! My recent trip here, they had a strawberry lychee matcha latte, which was just as good - however, it was harder to detect the lychee notes. (I did also ask for less sweet, but I always do that everywhere I go!) I had some self-control this day and only got the black sesame muffin and the ube coconut meringue muffin (which was less meringue-esque and more so just a whipped top and they used those flame things to toast the top a bit) but the actual mochi muffin was still very good. I'm also a big fan of their matcha mochi muffins, but didn't see any laying out, so it may not have been ready or available at the time. Anyway! I'll be back again and again :) xo

Yelp
This Third Culture Bakery is located in the Main Street Plaza. It is a busy area, as it is in the downtown area. Parking may be hit or miss depending on when you come, but there is a shared parking lot here as well. The door and windows has this iridescent film / tint to it that is very aesthetically pleasing and will definitely catch your eye. The interior is small with some seating. I am not really a fan of their matcha drinks, as they are a bit too bitter for me, but their matcha mochi donut and original muffin were tasty.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp since I had a matcha craving. Not easy to find, but it's located in front of the Cole building. With a small lot out front. I was happily greeted by a super cute guy with fusia hair and sassy:) Not only did he patiently answer all of my questions and sugar intake, but he also guided me through the drinks and made my matcha light in sugar but still strong in strawberry and lychee flavors. I also tried the blank sesame muffin and loved it, it was very light in sugar for those who expect something super sweet. I will come again for sure.

Yelp
Really great matcha drinks, coffee too. Has a small seating area. The treats are good, not greasy or heavy. The mochi churros are yum! The staff are SO NICE and helpful. I love that they chat with my kid and encourage her to order her own drink. Great spot!

Yelp
Visiting my daughter's workplace this morning. I asked her what would they like for a treat? We had brought over Nisshodo chi chi dango from Honolulu to share, and she exclaimed that Third Culture Bakery is known for its delectable mochi muffins and donuts. So off we went to Third Culture Bakery in Walnut Creek. Walking into the quaint bakery, you immediately find yourself smelling the fresh baked goods. The bakery is small, clean, and full of bright decor. Service is excellent and friendly here. The two ladies assisting us are adorable and helpful. Smiles all around. The price point is @$3.50 for the mochi donuts and @$3.50 -$5.00 for the mochi muffins. There was a bread pudding mochi banana pudding special at $6.88. I picked up the banana bread mochi pudding and lemon meringue mochi muffin for ourselves to try later. My daughter's co-workers are happy!

Yelp
Go to place for matcha in the area!! It is hard to find good matcha nowadays, but third culture is always consistent and serves good quality matcha. They always have the sweetest cashiers/baristas as well! I would recommend the mochi muffins :-) They are dense and chewy and not too sweet (original flavor). I have tried the mochi donuts as well, but the muffins are a bit yummier. The store is a bit small, but they have outdoor seating too. Loveee third culture!

Yelp
Consistently delicious matcha drinks. Service is very friendly! I prefer this location over the Berkeley one because of the great service. The inside is small with a few seats and it's pretty easy to find a spot for parking.

Yelp
Ordered the strawberry lychee iced matcha and it was pretty good! They hand whisked the matcha right in front of me which was fun to see and the matcha had a rich umami flavor. Strawberry lychee added sweetness and was a unique flavor combo. The place is small with only a couple tables and chairs. They sell a bit of merch and the vibe inside is really cool. Quick and friendly service! Would def come back to grab the guava matcha next!

Yelp
Found this place wandering around but unfortunately they were sold out. The woman working the counter mentioned they would get more the next morning so we came back and sure enough they were fully stocked. The staff is friendly and easy going. The space is very small but still has an indoor lounge and three tables outside. I love that they're dog friendly with treats at the register. The pasteries themselves are delicious, but the donuts are better than the muffins. I felt the muffins were too dense and not squishy enough. Overall I'd come back.

Yelp
Their mochis were unique and really good. Their Matcha drinks were solid. All in all, I would recommend this cafe. It's tucked in an area that not easy accessible and can only get in one way. I parked at the Ross parking lot and just walked there.

Yelp
Third Culture Bakery makes the best mochi muffins and my favorite matcha lattes! I have been a loyal customer for some time now, and first tried Third Culture at their Berkeley location when I lived in Oakland a few years ago. I'm SO glad there is a Walnut Creek location! The mochi muffins are incredible. I love the mix of textures with the slightly crunchy outside and perfectly chewy inside. The Ube Mochi Muffin is a must try and my favorite flavor. I also like pairing the Original Mochi Muffin with a flavored roasted matcha latte. The butter mochi donuts are also quite good, but if you only want one treat and are deciding between the muffins and the donuts, get the muffin. I like the mango passionfruit donut and the ube coconut donut. I've also enjoyed the yuzu lemon donut. As for the drinks, I highly recommend the roasted matcha lattes! My favorite is the strawberry lychee roasted matcha latte with oat milk. I recently tried the seasonal guava matcha latte with oat milk and it was delicious! Service is always a delight here. There are a few indoor seats and outdoor seats, but best for 1-2 people and not for groups. There is usually parking in the lot directly next to the bakery.

Yelp
Came here at 3 on a Friday and not much mochi donuts were left. They close at 4pm. Also, no hot drinks available since steamer is broken. Got the iced caramel matcha latte and a mochi muffin banana bread pudding . The bread pudding had no banana taste. It looked sweet but it wasn't sweet enough. I prefer mochi donut more. The drink was ok but I really wanted a hot drink. I like the Berkeley location more since they still had plenty of mochi donuts 5 min before closing on a Saturday.

Yelp
1ST time visiting @ThirdCulture We ordered both of their iced drinks, Strawberry Lychee Matcha & Roasted Matcha. If you couldn't tell, we're matcha missys. Place was super clean, well-styled with pink holographic accents to their logo and walls indoors and on the front door. Restrooms not avail. Dog friendly seating outside if you came to stay and chat with WiFi avail. Merch wall was super cute. They sell ceremonial grade matcha and I've been hunting for some in person at local cafes as to not pay taxes on a delivery. However, they matcha was being sold in a pouch bag, which isn't my style. I prefer in a tin as it keeps it fresher from my POV so I did not indulge myself. Products: Iced Roasted Matcha Latte - I tasted my friends and you definitely can taste that hojicha as advertised. They sell this powder as well so I'm assuming it must be popular. We both liked it. If you enjoy that earthier not too sweet taste, this is your drink. 4/5 IMO Iced Strawberry Lychee Matcha - too sweet for me Ya'll! From now on I'll be asking about adjusting sweetness not just at boba shops but at cafes too; hoping the staff are familiar enough with their drinks to gauge it well to us 1st timers @TC. Anywho, I loved what they were trying to do with the flavors. Their strawberry mix in definitely has to be a syrup or the lychee syrup has too much sugar in it. But overall, it was a pleasant drink. I wouldn't say I'd be back for it repeatedly even if the location was closer and more accessible to me. They get bonus points for hand whisking all their matcha drinks per drink AS THEY SHOULD and all other cafes 4/5. I did see a dad and young toddler come in to buy a bunch of mochi donuts which apparently is their speciality though. I wasn't super interested due to my carb intake but ya. Definitely try it out if it's your thing.

Yelp
Stopped by Third Culture Bakery to try their mochi donuts and I'm happy to say I accomplished my goal of getting a delicious treat! They were pretty tasty with just the right amount of sweet. The shop itself is super cute and cozy, with a nice little vibe that makes you want to hang out a bit. I'd probably come back.

Yelp
Third Culture had been on my "to visit" list for a long time coming since its popularity of mochi muffins and donuts years and years ago. I'm hardly in the area and was ecstatic to finally try it! Located on the corner of S California Blvd the bakery is easy to get to with plenty of parking in the lot as well as paid street parking. I ordered the Guava Matcha Latte with oat milk and got the Guava Cheesecake and Yuzu Mochi Donuts. Their matcha is hand whisked to order and was a vibrant green color, tasted delicious and loved the flavor of the guava paired with it. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the texture, not sure if it's the viscosity of the oat milk but it was a bit too thick for my liking. I typically get oat milk and haven't come across that issue before. I even mixed the drink and let the ice melt completely, but found the texture a bit too viscous for my liking. I still finished my drink, because no matcha should go to waste! Especially with the high demand for it. The mochi donut flavors were recommended by the staff and tasted delicious! Didn't quite get the cheesecake part of the Guava cheesecake but tasted spot on and the Yuzu was bright and citrusy. The mochi donuts were perfectly chewy, sweet, sticky and very reminiscent of butter mochi we all have grown to love. Loved the recommendations given by the staff and the drink was made quickly and to order. There is some seating indoors and outdoors. Not the best for larger groups but there are chairs to share a table inside and some outdoors, most tables are best for pairs or solo. Definitely will be back to try more of their matcha offerings, perhaps with regular milk. I really wish they were open earlier to get my matcha fix before work. Can't wait to be back!

Yelp
A very low key store compared to the Berkeley location. Arriving close to 9:15am the traffic flow is consistent. Orders: Strawberry Lychee Coffee-strawberry puree is added but I really don't taste the lychee. This combination while unique, really isn't to my liking. Hence, I wouldn't re-order it. Carmel Latte-I am trying to reduce my sugar intake & was suggested to add half the Carmel syrup, but again it was just a little short of giving me the Carmel taste, so I had to ask for more syrup. There wasn't a strong coffee brew either. So drinks here are not to my liking. Chili Oil Muffin-$1 proceed will support Palisade fires & this was a very unique muffin that I enjoyed. The top had an excellent crisp to it & the inside was filled with chili oil. The fragrant aromatic smell of the chili oil made it tantalizing. Glad I had a chance to try this. Vietnamese Coffee Mochi Donut- a light coffee glaze, not enough to give me an impressive "Wow" factor, but the mochi is always consistent in texture. Strawberry Cream Mochi Donut-nice strawberry glaze that isn't too sweet. Love how they celebrate The Lunar New Year & offer special flavors during this time of year.

Yelp
Modern, trendy bakery serving mochi baked goods and matcha beverages! With its original location established in Berkeley (I think), this newer Walnut Creek location is within walking distance from Broadway Plaza. They also have their own private parking lot. Their primary selection consists of mochi butter donuts and mochi muffins. I usually opt for the donuts. I'll grab a dozen to bring to family dinners and everyone loves them! They're also a little different from your usual desserts. I wasn't as impressed by my Salted Maple Matcha Latte, but still good. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable!
google avatar

Brad N.

Yelp
For a not-so-hugr mochi fan, these are pretty tasty. Though as expected can be somewhat heavy so can't eat too many at a time. The muffins are a bit lighter texture than the donuts. Lots of flavors to choose from. Other friends who enjoy mochi more think these are quite good, especially if you're looking for a gluten free option. Most still have egg and milk ingredients. Btw to the owners/managers: your yelp elite event worked out since I only knew of this pace from your recent event. So I knew exactly where to go for GF options for a gift. Thanks again

Yelp
Good quality mochi doughnuts and matcha! Staff were really friendly and helpful, the space was very clean. I got to use some of my rewards; so I highly recommend signing up for that if you see yourself coming back to this awesome place. Today I got a box of 6 doughnuts and 2 lattes. I got myself the guava matcha latte which seems to be a new item, well let me tell you it is very yummy!

Yelp
--- FOOD & DRINKS --- Mmmk! So I've been visiting Third Culture since 2023. Mochi donuts definitely became a thing since around that time. While it's not my go-to dessert, this is definitely my go-to for Mochi donuts and muffins when ya girl is in the mood! Really love that there us Asian flavors like: Buko Pandan, Matcha, Black Sesame, and more! Now their drinks? I'm definitely a matcha girly. I've tried numerous spots in WC and it's such a struggle to find ceremonial matcha out here. Third Culture is my most frequently visited for matcha lattes- it's my closest walk and I lov the different matcha flavors like Strawberry Lychee, Caramel, and seasonal ones like Guava! I always change my milk to oat. They also have soy and almond. They did have a couple "ceremonial" matcha drinks, but those were taken off the menu during the matcha shortage. I kept coming back anyway because of the short distance and the fun flavor options. Fast forward to today - a few days ago they finally updated their matcha to a "Premium Matcha - New First Harvest Ceremonial Blend"! The color is definitely more vibrant and it tastes WAAAAY better! So glad to finally have at least a ceremonial blend out in this city! This is definitely a top reason why I'll be coming back. --- SERVICE --- The staff is super friendly and social. Their thoughtful comments also come a long way. "Let me know if you need me to make any adjustments to your drink." "Feel free to share your thoughts about the new matcha powder". "You have a wonderful day, now!" --- AMBIANCE --- I love the colorful voiiibeees! The outdoor tables and chairs outside are pink. The store windows are a rainbow hologram. Their merch section is aesthetic and colorful- which totally matches the vibe of their drinks and food. Can't wait to try more on their menu!

Yelp
Mochi mochi galore! Third Culture has been on my bookmarks for quite some time now and I'm so glad one has opened up near one of my offices and I don't have to go out of my way now. The chrome windows make it very bright inside but don't let that distract you from the mochi goodness. I brought my coworkers with me and I loved that everyone got something to try as well! I got the yuzu lemon donut, Vietnamese coffee donut, and the strawberry matcha muffin. We also all got some drinks and I got the roasted matcha latte. I would say I still prefer Hojicha, but the roasted matcha was still good, just on the lighter side. I loved the donuts and the muffin! I was surprised at how much mochi there was. There are some mochi donuts out there that are all dough and very little mochi. They were on the sweeter side but all still tasted delicious. The strawberry matcha muffin surprised me because if you eat the matcha muffin part by itself, it's actually pretty bitter. But pairing it with the strawberry frosting on top was perfect! Next time I'm in town, I will definitely be stopping by to see what new flavors there are!

Yelp
I heard of Third Culture Bakery many times before from friends or from a boba shop that sold Third Culture Bakery baked goods, but I have never tried it before. I saw on Instagram that they were having black sesame flavored items for just a limited time, so I had to go and try it. I love black sesame flavored foods! I ordered the black sesame mochi waffle, the black sesame mochi donut, the black sesame mochi muffin, and the black sesame latte (hot). Other items looked and sounded really good, but I will need to go back and try them! The black sesame mochi donut was good! I can taste the black sesame on the top, and the donut was nice and chewy! The black sesame mochi muffin was good as well! It was thick and chewy. I could taste the black sesame in the muffin. The black sesame latte was okay. I'm not sure why it looked green, but maybe that's how it was supposed to be? (My sister also ordered that and they accidentally put matcha in hers. They told her they did it by mistake and asked if it was okay). I ordered mine hot and with oat milk. I couldn't taste the black sesame in the drink. When I got close to the bottom of the drink, there were globs of black sesame. Maybe it wasn't mixed well? I'm not quite sure what was wrong. I just know it didn't meet my expectations. The black sesame mochi waffle was okay. The waffle itself was good; I can taste the black sesame, and it was chewy. The black sesame whipped cream , the honey, the bananas, the cacao nibs, and the sea salt helped add texture and flavor to the waffle. It was definitely filling.

Yelp
I came here for an elite Yelp event and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered three goodies and an iced coffee, which had the iced salted maple latte with oat milk. Everything from the appearance of the store to the friendliness of the cashiers to the actual taste of coffee and goodies was on point. I will definitely be coming back to visit in the future. They have a little store where you can buy a little trinkets and things too. Be sure to check them out if you haven't already!

Yelp
GREAT MATCHA. Fun donuts. Fast service. Kind folks behind the counter. Modern and bright. Must visit!

Yelp
Third culture bakery is a vibe! They have delicious matcha drinks. My favorite is the salted maple roasted matcha latte. You can really taste the roasted matcha, yum! Their mochi baked goods are also very good and the flavors come through. Can't go wrong with either the muffin or the donut. I especially love the Asian flavors like pandan and black sesame.

Yelp
I was part of their yelp elite event, I got to meet the owners and they explain how third culture was created, all the history behind that great business, all the hard work they had to put in to get where they're at right now. It was amazing! You get to pick 3 of their pastries and 1 drink of your choice on the house. I tried the Churro mochi muffin, black sesame mochi muffin, and the strawberry cream butter mochi donut, and they have really good flavor, and texture. I also bought their banana bread pudding and it's one of the best banana pudding that I have ever tried. There is parking next to their building! Really friendly staff, owners are really involved in the whole experience. Glad and happy to get to try this amazing establishment! A lot of smiles and definitely a great time! Recommend it 100%

Yelp
Lovely experience at Third Culture. Some of the best matcha that you will find in the area. Decided to visit this morning and understood it may be a bit of a wait. The young person..Bianca..was very friendly and attentive. Even though they were busy, she greeted me with a smile when I walked inside. Ordered the ceremonial matcha and observed the process. She mentioned it was a new batch. Observing the process of mixing and whisking, it was a true treasure when I took a sip. Creamy and smooth with a lovely matcha flavor. Truly appreciated the kind demeanor of this young person and the extra love she puts into blending the matcha. It doesn't take a lot to simply be kind to another person. Bless Bianca when you visit and be kind.

Yelp
ceremonial matcha is really good here. creamy and not bitter at all. place is small but good for in and out drinks. has donuts and desserts here that I have yet to try. staff is pretty nice as well. will come again when in the area.

Yelp
Came here after lunch on a Saturday and a good portion of their baked goods were sold out. Staff were super friendly and gave me some recommendations on what to get, the ube mochi muffin and passion fruit mochi donut were very tasty. The latte however was just ok in my opinion, nothing too special. Overall great place to come get some baked goods and maybe a drink if you like. Parking lot is kind of small so just an FYI

Rick M.

Yelp
We tried a variety of items and all were great. The gentleman that helped us was awesome with ideas because some items were seasonal. I would definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
Don't recommend. Drink tasted off and mochi muffins could have been better. Oh and the barista was eating behind the counter when I walked in:/

Yelp
What a vibe in here! I love the neon pink lighting thats reflective all around the bakery. The mochi muffins and donuts are freshly made and the drinks are all handcrafted. They're known for their matcha collection it seems so my boyfriend and I got the strawberry lychee matcha latte while mine was the roasted one. SO CREAMY, SO DELISH! I also got the banana bread mochi pudding, it was so good - not too sweet at all, even with the caramel drizzled on top of it. The merch they had are super cute with their logos and I loved the tote bags. Worth the drive for us!

Yelp
A bakery that specializes in mochi muffins and donuts! They have other locations in Berkeley too but I was surprised to see one opened in downtown Walnut Creek. The inside was beautifully designed along with the colorful reflective windows all around. Friendly staff double checking with our orders! My favorite was their matcha latte - they always hand-whisks their matcha to order for the best test. Matcha is premium and can be paired with different milks. On the flip side, I tried their sweet corn latte (their new menu item) and it was all right. Once mixed, I felt like the taste of the coffee was overbearing the sweet corn.

Yelp
Been wanting to try out this spot for a long time and I finally was able to. We ordered a variety of the mochi pastries and my favorite was the thai tea donut. We also ordered the caramel coffee latte and the salted maple roasted matcha latte. I personally did not like the matcha and would not order it again. It didn't have any matcha flavor and the maple flavor was very faint. The drink mainly tasted like straight up milk.

Yelp
We stopped by Third Culture Bakery just 30 minutes after opening and might've missed the morning rush--but lucky for us, there were still donuts available (and thank goodness, because wow). From the first bite of a perfectly chewy mochi muffin to the dreamy donuts we enjoyed that day and the next, every treat was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere? Cozy and inviting. The smells? Buttery, sweet, and impossible to resist. The customer service? So sweet and accommodating--we felt genuinely welcomed from the moment we walked in. The bakery is tucked in a cute shopping area with spots to wander and walk off a few bites (if you're into balance like that). Delicious, delightful, and definitely worth a return visit. #ThirdCultureBakery #MochiMuffinMagic #SweetTreatsAndVibes #DonutMissThis #BakeryLove #SupportLocalEats #WorthTheCalories

Yelp
I was actually so freaking happy to walk in and see the matcha einspanner still on the menu. This thing is so good, we can kiss socal cafes goodbye. I'd sometimes come to this location a while back during Covid era just to takeout some mochi muffins, but will come back for the drinks now and maybe to try the mochi waffle! Def recommend the matcha einspanner (ceremonial grade is indeed crazy good quality but u can save urself $2 and get the regular matcha which is just as tasty and sTILL better than most average cafe matchas) + also recommend the banana bread mochi pudding -- honestly prefer this over all the desserts bc of how moist & flavorful it is (+also the best portion size!). I'd recommend the mochi muffins over the donuts. the latter I find to be slightly drier than the muffins but the sheer variety of the flavors are fun friendly staff:) AND easy parking (same plaza as Ross and nothing Bundt cakes). There are 2-3 small tables, including even a lil couch area. The store is small though so not rlly a place to lounge around for hours

Yelp
Staff were friendly. I came on a rainy day and the feeling of warmth(heating) once walking into the bakery felt amazing. There were few seats in the shop so wouldn't recommend a big group gathering. Honestly I think the mochi donut is too overrated. It was ok. Objectively speaking the price is not cheap for a tiny donut. There were cute merchandises sold in store too.

Yelp
after my initial visit during the Yelp Elite Event, i came back for some more items. this time, i stuck with muffins and got both the Original and Black Sesame muffins. service was just as welcoming as the first time, and the ambiance was smooth, with the chilly Walnut Creek weather original mochi muffin (9.5/10): the OG must be the best: an almost near perfect, tasty and well made muffin. every bite is delicious, with the inside texture similar to pudding black sesame mochi muffin (8.5/10): same inside texture, tasty with seeds on top of muffin; this has more of a tart taste

Yelp
You could get a root canal faster than getting service at this place. My son and I stood there forever and a line was forming behind us. The woman who was almost done making drinks said she would be right with us but when she was done with the drinks she quickly started looking on her phone instead. Terrible service. Go to Paris Baguette. They have mochi doughnuts there and way faster with the service.

Yelp
I've been coming to Third Culture with my family for years, and it never disappoints. Their flavor combinations (especially for the waffles) always hits it out of the park. Oh and that mango passion fruit donut is my biggest weakness. Dont sleep on their drink menu either---The ceremonial latte is the best most deep vibrant green you can get anywhere. My perfect, not too sweet, afternoon treat. The staff here are always the friendliest here too. Can't wait to come back

Yelp
Staff is super welcoming and there are some indoor seats if you want to hangout. They also have a couple outdoor seats as well. The menu rotates often for seasonal specials, right now it's very fall oriented. I always go for the matcha, sometimes I wish it was slightly stronger-but the quality is good. The mochi muffins are so good, and let them heat it up for you! There are also tons of mochi donuts and they rotate out seasonal flavors too. They have some high quality tea and random items for purchase, good place to buy a gift.

Yelp
Service is consistently good each time I come here. The inside is clean and decorated colorfully. They have merch and matcha for sale. Mochi donuts have unique flavors and the texture is amazing. Drink is yummy. The workers remember regulars and their orders.

Yelp
Been here and the Berkeley location a few times and they are hands down the best mochi donuts anywhere. Other mochi donut places have opened but they don't compare to this place plus they have mochi muffins that nobody has. They also have great drinks and give you get a matcha drink, they actually wisk the matcha so you know it good. Friendly staff and owners as well. Go get you mochi on and grab a drink while at it.

Yelp
Super cute bakery, mochi donuts are 10/10!! Guava cheesecake mochi donut is a MUST!!! Want to eventually try all the flavors and their matcha is just as yum. Workers are so sweet and friendly. Inside is adorable, a little small with a few seats/tables to sit at.

Yelp
There was only 1 girl working the day we went in so service was super slow but she was still super nice and attentive to everyone. The matcha latte was good but if you're use to starbucks then I prefer starbies ov this. This one was more on the bland/less sweet side. The ube + chocolate donuts were delicious. They ran out of the mochi muffin I wanted to try so I'll definitely be back to try that but if you're in the area and never been before this is a cute lil place to checkout!

Yelp
Ive been coming here for years and today I just tried their new black sesame products. Third Culture grinds their own black sesame paste for 72 hours before incorporating it into their drinks and mochi products. I had the opportunity to try their black sesame latte and the black and gold mochi doughnut (black sesame mochi donut with a thick dusting of salted egg yolk powder). The Latte was so rich and the doughnut was to die for. The combination of nutty black sesame with the mild saltiness of the egg yolk powder made this superb! Will be back to try their new mochi waffles!

Yelp
Mochi Muffin heaven. I became a frequent customer at the Bondadoso Cafe after trying these delicious and unique mochi muffins. Needless to say, I was sad when they discontinued. Then I head through the grapevine that the baker would be opening a bakery in Walnut Creek and I was finally able to find it. The mochi muffins are my favorite. The ube one is a MUST! The donuts are also tasty but I prefer the muffin. I tried their passion fruit donut and it was ok - a tad busy with the I mix of flavors. The ube donut was delicious. The orange one I am yet to try. I will come back to add my opinion. But my original love is the ube mochi muffin. Buying it from third culture was a different experience because it was fresh out of the oven so the taste was even more delicious. I also really enjoyed their iced matcha. The location is super inviting and has both outdoor and indoor sitting. I am definitely returning.

Yelp
This small bakery is a well hidden gem. The seating is very limited, so prepare yourself that you may have to get your treats to-go. I stopped by a couple of nights ago and tried the apple pie muffin, churro muffin, chai tea donut, and a matcha tea. So the muffins and donuts do not have the typical texture. The texture is more chewy, think mochi. But let me tell you about flavor, they were DELICIOUS! The treats are not overly sweet but are packed with flavor. The matcha tea is undeniable matcha with just a touch of sweetness. I personally liked that the tea was not very sweet, but if you need it a little sweeter, the employees are so kind, I'm sure they would be happy to add more honey. They also have a brownie that I didn't try. I think I'm going to cruise by there next week and give it a try.
