New Portland Rising: How Entrepreneurs of Color Are Turning Crisis Into Opportunity

"Opened a year after the bookstore in a modest house adjacent to the shop, the wellness space greets visitors with an entryway lined with candles, incense, and tarot cards depicting people of color and offers sound baths, sleep therapy, and Reiki. Michelle Lewis framed the two ventures together: “Third Eye Books offers nourishment for the mind,” she said. “This offers nourishment for the body and soul.”" - Tony Perrottet Tony Perrottet Tony Perrottet is a historian and journalist based in New York City. Google
I found this place on tik tok and decided to stop in during my weekend trip to Portland. I was so impressed by the large selection of books available by black authors. I was also able to chat quite a bit with the owner, Charles. He was great to chat with and I could tell that he’s very passionate about literature, life and black culture. I ended up purchasing two books that I’m super excited to read. Next time that I’m in the area, I will definitely be back!

Just take all my money. If I didn't have adult supervision I'd be building an encampment with all the books I just bought. I've already shipped a box, plus no room in my luggage for all this knowledge. I'm still plotting a solo return before I skip town. She gushed over speaking with the owner, who's a local civil rights activist at their holistic parlor around the corner. Brother behind the counter has plenty of recommendations that we took him up on. Highly recommend.

I was just talking to someone about how there wasn't much teen pregnancy in my social group when I was a teenager. And I told my friend that one of my favorite neighborhood shops where I got my shirts and rings and posters had free condoms in a bowl by the register. My friends and I stayed safe thanks to that little community service you offered. Thank you so much for that.

If you have not been to Third Eye Books, you are truly missing out! The customer service, the selection, the overall vibe all say “you are welcome here”. Run, don’t walk, to get there. I promise you will not be disappointed 😊

Went in on my birthday yesterday to buy myself a few things, and get a copy of the Black panther Party graphic novel for my mom. I spoke with Charles, one of the owners, and we had an excellent conversation. He is very helpful and very welcoming, and holds space extremely well to make real connections with his customers. He's extremely knowledgeable about so many topics, especially the history of race relations in Oregon, which is one of the books I had gone there looking for. He's very good at making recommendations for what you're looking for, and is genuinely a delight to buy things from! Looking forward to returning again and again, hopefully next time I'll get to meet his wife who also owns the store and has a holistic healing business in the building next door! So great to see them thriving on Division, and in a storefront that has been on that street for a very long time. Old Division was such a different place than it is now, with so many massive newly constructed buildings with very little character. The building they are in is part of old Portland, as are they, and it is fitting that they are representing the important and wonderful history and legacy of black people in Oregon from an older building with a lot of character.

Shopping with Third Eye Books was an incredible experience. I sent Michelle (one of the owners) a list of titles that I needed to purchase for our office and she was so responsive and kind. Both her and her husband added personal touches to the experience and helped source the titles we needed very quick. The books arrived quickly and I left feeling valued as a customer. I can't wait to make another purchase. Support Local! Support Black-owned bookstores!

I saw this place recommended by the Traveling While Black TikTok before visiting from Seattle. It did not disappoint! Lots of great Black-centered books for kids, teens, and adults. My boyfriend bought an adorable book for his niece. He also bought two books to read himself. He only got into reading over the past couple years and was an audiobook guy. He loved the store so much and got some great recommendations from Charles. I bought a memoir adapted for young adults that I’m excited to read. Charles also gave us a great recommendation for Caesar salad that actually was really delicious. So kind! I will definitely come back to visit.

Great bookstore! They have a very active Instagram page so definitely check them out! The owners are so kind and helpful, they didn’t have a book I wanted but they were able to order it for me to my home! I believe this is the only black owned bookstore in Oregon and they definitely deserve support! Unfortunately they have been the victim of multiple break ins. In conclusion I highly recommend giving them a visit and buying some books!!

Yelp
Amazing selection of books at great prices. Jaylen was so helpful sharing their insights and knowledge on the new arrivals / upcoming readings. Appreciate exceptional customer service, rare finds all around!!

Yelp
Excellent selection of well-priced, quality books. The owner greeted us and offer suggestions for material that I had been searching for quite awhile. I will be back whenever I'm in town. Thank you!

Yelp
The only place I buy my books! It is Black owned and the owners are both very friendly. Books can be ordered through their website and ship very quickly to your home. They have a great social media presence. I also have my work buy any and all books from them. So grateful to have indie book stores in town like this one! As a Black woman, it feels so good to have so many books by Black authors and topics that have to do with Black history, struggle, celebration and DEI. Can't wait to visit their new physical space. Thanks again y'all #supportlocal #buyBlack #deleteyouramazonaccount

Yelp
Ordered another book for a local toy drive to Randall Children's Hospital. Got the perfect Bob Marley kids book, super quick shipping. Great service. Shop small and support local.

Yelp
Michelle and Charles have produced an eclectic collection of books and gifts for every reader. Many items are hand picked and they will even special order for you. If you want children's books - they have them. If you want sci-fi books - that too. Need a tarot deck or some Florida water? Check that's there too. Educational or business minded or pretty obscure that you haven't found somewhere else? Start here they either have it or will get it. I love helping my community by buying my books here. Check them out and tell them Sherry S. sent you!

Yelp
I finally stopped in here a week or so ago and am so sorry I didn't do it sooner and want to spread the word to the neighborhood how awesome this shop is. I guess I thought from the symbol it was a new agey/magic book store. Nope. It is a wonderfully curated selection of books and comics by Black authors and about Black people. Cooking, music, history, biographies, fiction. They have it all and will order any other sort of book you might want. The owners were so welcoming and engaged our group of kids with a great discussion on the importance of comics. We desperately need this sort of diversity as Division is becoming a sea of tiny plants and candles. Next time you're looking for a cool gift for someone (or yourself) definitely stop in here!

Yelp
They have just what I want without having to search all over the place in stock and ready to go - shipping is fast! Their site is ThirdEyeBag.com and they're online only for now

Yelp
Amazing pair of shops! Beautiful curation of books and because the two owners were the ones at the counter, they knew where everything was and had personal reccommendations. I cannot wait to bring my daughter back--it will have to be for her birthday, because she will want alot from both shops. Also love that a bookstore has a free library (and free covid tests) out front!

Yelp
I have purchased many books from third eye bag and they never disappoint. A wide array or leftist materials as well as many great novels for kids and teens. They always go out of their way to order books for me that might not be available elsewhere. I feel safe entering this bookstore and the service is always warm. I even did an exchange because I accidentally ordered a book out of order of the series and it was no problem at all! Thank you thank you thank you!

Yelp
Charles and Michelle are really lovely people who go out of their way to find anything you're looking for. I use them for my Libro.FM app and to buy books in person. They carry a lot of books you can't find elsewhere and if they don't have you need they will do their best to acquire it! I love being able to shop small, local and black owned businesses right in my neighborhood. It's the best thinking about keeping money out of Bezo's hands!

Yelp
So happy to have this bookstore in the neighborhood. Super friendly staff and an adorable selection for my young kid. They were able to order a book for me they didn't have in stock and it's going to ship directly to my house.

Yelp
I love everything about this company, I love the work they are doing! How they show up in the community. How they are people first and also pouring their heart and soul into this shop. It is a beautiful thing. I will be a life long supporter and you should too.

Yelp
Great bookstore w/a conscience & full-on members of the local community. Michelle and Charles just give me a smile whenever I see them.

Yelp
I was looking for a tarot deck. They didn't have it in stock, but they were super friendly & offered to order it with an added reasonable shipping fee. It arrived at the store & it took me a long time to pick it up, but they were really nice about it. I could've ordered it on Amazon, but why would anyone send Bezos to space when we could support our community...? Love this store & really happy to keep shopping with them.

Yelp
The staff and owners of this store are great to talk to and run an awesome business. I'm glad we have access to their selection of books from African American authors both online and in person. Thank you for running such a great book store!

Yelp
Love this place!! The owners are the sweetest and their stock of anti racist books and BIPOC authors is great!

Yelp
I ordered a few books and they arrived at my door quicker than Amazon!! I love supporting a local, Black owned business! So happy I found them!!

Yelp
So glad this bookstore opened up - it's actually one of the closer ones to me south of Portland that's not a big box store and I am happy to drive a little further to support this family and keep another indiebookseller going. Some people got pandemic puppies; I got pandemic books - I ordered several for delivery at home and they came quickly! Then I was thrilled to get to go browse the space in real life; Michelle greeted me but gave me space to browse and they did floorspace just right, homey, but roomy too. What an important resource to have in Portland. And they have a great social media feed to show you what's new and the do a really amazing curation. The only problem is too many books, too little time, but I will keep coming back and keep on reading.

Yelp
This place is needed in a city like Portland. Skip Amazon and other big retailers and support a local bookstore!
