Tijuanazo Opens in East Los Angeles With Top-Level Tijuana-Style Tacos | Eater LA

"In Chicago, Lizbeth Esquivel’s Thlaco Taco Tijuanense has quickly become popular—so much so that it served as a vendor in the VIP lounge at Lollapalooza—and uses the same marinating-influenced approach to beef that links it to the Esquivel family’s Tijuana lineage; the spot is also poised to open a second location." - Bill Esparza

Be prepared to wait about 15–20 minutes. I ordered three lengua tacos and one chorizo—the quality was amazing, honestly the best tacos I’ve ever had. The tortillas tasted freshly made, just like authentic Mexican corn tortillas. The only downside was that I had to come back to ask for more salsa since they gave me very little for four tacos in my to-go order, but the cashier was super nice and immediately gave me more. He was doing it all—taking orders, helping in the back, and handling deliveries—definitely a champ. One thing to note: there’s no bathroom, so I wouldn’t plan to dine in. Still these are the best tacos I have ever had in the States.

Google
Great tacos with good tortillas. Had an asada & al pastor taco & were very good tasting. Only downside is there is no restroom in the restaurant to wash hands or use at all. Definitely dont recommend eating dine in here for this specific reason.

Google
I have been looking for a great Mexican restaurant for a while...my problem with most places has a lot to do with seasoning. Salt and pepper go a long way (and other seasonings too) and this place DELIVERED!!! The staff was amazing...the food seasoned!!! Definitely check this place out. 10 out of 10!! The only reason for 3 stars for the atmosphere was due to it being very small there ..there were tables and people eating but not a lot of space to wait for your food and I felt awkward standing there while people were eating. But still... amazing place!

Google
Really good food and good tasting waters, must try place, great price to food ration. Note this place is small and hard to get a seat. Queso birria taco is really good.

Google
So happy that I finally made it to @thlacotacotijuanense! The FOOD is authentic & delicious plus the service is fantastic along with a comfortable atmosphere. I'm getting the Wednesday Quesabirria & Consommé Special and their "House Specialty" Al Pastor Tacos at Thlaco Taco Tijuanense, Hanover Park. ❤️ 🌮🌮 🌮 🌯 🌯 🔥

Google
The most flavorful/best tacos I've ever had by far.

Google
It was completely disgusting I didnt even eat one of the tacos after two bites of full fat and no real meat I just gave up. The rice taste like it was old and from a box and the beans were very flavorless it was a waste of $18. They also give very very little containers of gauc when you request it on the side only enough for one taco.

Alex R.

Google
Tacos were really good, just very expensive. The al pastor with the pineapple in the taco was delicious, so was the Asada Mulita I had. The place is very small and tables even smaller to eat. No chips and salsa were given and no fountain drinks just cans and bottles, which makes it more expensive. Close to $70 I think for family if 4.

Yelp
Dont understand all the social media hype and the good reviews. Was not worth the drive. Place is small and not atmosphere to be in. No washrooms, customer service is terrible, they forget or don't care at all about giving you your complete order and are bothered when you point out that something that you paid for is missing. Carne asada tacos are the worst ever!! Salsas are tasteless. Don't waste your time and money in this place.

Dan R.

Yelp
Been to this place several times now. What draws me here is the fresh made tortillas. It is worth the drive from Aurora to visit here just for a few extra to eat on the way home. Only have had the steak and pastor tacos, but they were delicious with all the toppings and salsa. Looking forward to trying the quesaberria next and several more fresh tortillas on the side. It may take about 10 or so minutes for an order, but everything is fresh made/cooked - and worth the taste.

Yelp
Had a quick stop for a Mexican carving. It was absolutely delicious. Has a vegetarian taco and chips salsa. Excellent taste. Will come back.

Yelp
This place has been on my radar for some time but finally stopped in when I read they were celebrating their two year anniversary already. It lived up to the hype for flavor town and friendly service. It's small inside with no public restrooms so I would recommend take out here but a full service location is coming in fall 2024. The tacos are small but mighty with tender meats and appropriate condiments. I will definitely return soon and can't wait to experience the new location. Congratulations!

Yelp
Located in a small strip center, this family owned and operated serves some great tasting Mexican foods. Basically for takeout even tho they do have a small indoor seating area, all tood is prepared while you wait. They serve a variety of tacos, tortas, burritos, mulitas, quesadillas, sopes, and vampiros. You can order individually or as a dinner. We tried the Asada Tacos which were full of flavor served on homemade corn tortillas. Also had the Al Pastor Tacos with pineapple. The avocado creme was delicious! Prices are super reasonable. They also offer homemade Agua Frescas in a pouch. All made with fresh fruits. My wife had the pineapple/mango which she loved! With so many combinations of ingredients,we will definitely be back to try more of their delicious food . Also, they will be opening their second location in Arlington Heights in September 2024.

Yelp
First visit, I was impressed left a good review. Fast forward to 2nd visit, Torta was extremely soggy barely any meaty on toppings just soggy bread. I figured it was a one off day, so let me dine in, maybe it'll be better, however it was worse. What is this?! And the side order of rice and beans came in condiment cups. Never coming back again!

Yelp
Popped into this new hole in the wall for lunch on our way home from the Hawk Hollow dog park in Bartlett. It's a small place and it was doing brisk business but service was fast. Chips and guacamole were standard fare and were fresh, crisp and tasty. Great salsas accompanying the dishes - red was spicier and thicker of the two. Asada taco was incredible. Birria Vampiro taco was well done with a generous serving of tender meat. Check this place out.

Yelp
I decided to try this place with the recommendation of a friend. I've seen some random ads on social media, but I've never seen it. I'm glad that I came here for lunch. It's a small spot with big flavor. The person taking my order was really nice and delivered my food rather quickly. I had the birria and agua fresca. The food was fresh and the aqua fresca was refreshing. The meat was tender and the consume was hot hot. Not just your regular hot, but a little extra hot so be careful. The salsa was also delicious. At the time, I believe there was a birria special on Wednesdays, but that could change. Overall a nice little hidden gem that I would come back to. The only thing I'm unsure of is if there's a bathroom. It's a small spot, so there may not be one.

Joey A.

Yelp
Amazing good. Some of the best al pastor i have had! Birria was great too. Workers are super friendly also
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
This place was fantastic. The atmosphere inside is so cute and the service was welcoming and friendly. We got the birria tacos with consommé and the consommé had such a great kick to it! The horchata was delicious. The asada tacos were also good! Excited to try more.

Yelp
Thlaco Taco is a small and locally owned business that fully brings their A game. This establishment can sit about 25 people comfortably. I tried 3 tacos (with everything) - the asada, Al pastor and birria. The flavors in each of them were different compared to the tacos I'm used to and in the best way possible. Proteins are marinated/seasoned well and prepared perfectly. Each taco was bold and full of flavor with a kick at the end. My favorite was the Al pastor. I instantly felt the love and care this business puts into the quality of food they are serving to their customers. Everything was very very delicious. The staff members are friendly and attentive. The restaurant is kept clean and ready to go. Once my order was ready I was anticipating to grab it myself, however it was brought over to the table I was sitting at. They truly make you feel comfortable, at home and welcomed.

Yelp
I came across this taco establishment through some Instagram posts. Based on it, I gave Thlaco a follow and learned about what they had to offer. That made me want to check out Thlaco very much. Finally, in December 2023, after Christmas, I got the chance to make it out to Hanover Park to try some of the offerings of Thlaco. Thlaco specializes in Tijuana style tacos, and the signature item of that specialty is their guacamole salsa. On their Instagram page, Thlaco usually advertises their Al Pastor offerings and Mulitas. When I went to Thlaco, I ordered their Carne Asada taco and Al Pastor mulita (w/ extra pineapple chunks). The order is to be placed at the counter. The menu is printed on a wall across from the counter. There is a small dining area for those who want to dine in. Both the items I ordered were good in taste. I liked the flavor and the texture of the meats. They were cooked properly. I found the Carne Asada to be more flavorful than the Al Pastor. Their housemade guacamole salsa was tasty. It's a must-have on the items that come with it. The tortillas are handmade in-house. They were fresh and soft. Good quality. The two salsas that they provided (on the side), Roja and Verde, were good, and the Verde was the better one between the two. Spicy and flavorful. They also have a decent variety of Agua Frescas on hand, usually. I had their refreshing pineapple mango agua fresca, and it was delicious. I not only liked their food but also their service as well. They provided good, friendly service. The food pricing is a bit on the high side for suburban standards, in my opinion, but not bad. The food quality and portions make up for it. Their menu has a good variety and they also have some specials during the week. E.g., $5.50 Mulitas on Tuesdays (normally $7.50). I recommend checking out Thlaco for their Tijuana style tacos and more.

Yelp
Food was good. I had a burrito El Pastore. It just took way too long. I waited a half an hour for a burrito dinner and they forgot to give me the beans and rice. I mean, I would forget too if it took that long.

Yelp
July 5, 2024: Yelp reviews may truly skew the experience people truly have which is why I spoke up here. Going in seems to be a good deal & friendly atmosphere. However, at some point you realize your hands are going to have strong odor & sticky of the food & dining in at this place & not being able to wash them is simply inconvenient & unhygenic, I can't recall if their napkins were decent or flimsy. Although I did tip because the consome was spot on & they did provide onions & cilantro & salsa choices, my hunger was only 65% satisfied for investing adequately for meal, but food impression overall was 3.87+. I also voiced my opinion in a separate private yelp msg saying that I observed a mother with a kid of the same Hispanic culture being preferentially allowed to use their restroom in the back but it seems a no public washroom policy applies to everyone else. The voiced response from some manager was concerned about me expressing how I 'watch'ed this & thought there was a threat asking who I thought I was & so on, as if picking a fight on some sort of falsely tested pride; I responded to say I'm just a local & was simply unaware of the signs they posted (apparently there is a credit card / dine-in svc fee even if you're over $10, which I admit I found stingy) - Ultimately, there was nothing that could be done & I simply apologized as a handwashing sink is not mandatory feature in the city restaurant rules & regulations, so one cannot even make a health violation complaint. Although hand sanitizer was offered, I didn't want to smear/cover up the ickyness reak with chemicals; I require soap & water on a hot summer day after a hot meal that could have been solid 3-4 stars, but this was sadly really 2.67/5 because of this episode. I do want to try this place again there are good items on their menu, yet I'm not sure, unless it's total takeout & as if one is not upsetting the establishment grouch; as I am concerned about the attitude & egotism of one the owner making responses on this yelp subspace but I guess can understand, I ran a business once & it was never easy dealing with customers, & at the same time there seems to be worry about reputation... anyhow, the TV screen is smart, the prices/marketing was brilliant, the food seems good & spicy, but I'm not sure if they fully care or could build a handwashing sink the next time they try this or when they hand it down to someone in a more modern generation. Perhaps a walk to the gas station on the other corner after dining in to burn some calories & clean up; lol.

Yelp
Heard so many great things so I decided to stop in, boy am I glad I did! The steak was seasoned very well & tasted so good. I ordered Mulitas $7 each: one steak & one Al Pastor along with 4 tacos $4 each: 2 steak & 2 Al Pastor also a Quesabirrias dinner $16. The Aguas frescas looked delicious too so I ordered one passion fruit & one piña colada for $4 each. All the items were delicious & definitely recommend them. Will be back!

Yelp
Just stopped in with a group of friends from church who kept raving about how I had to visit "Thlacos" they said every time they came here they would think of me and my stories of TJ and Cali and the tacos. So I said ok I'll go. To my surprise these guys can make a taco!! Definitely recommend the Birria, the Al pastor and the chorizo. But the best was the Al pastor. I also Had the asada. Honestly every bit I went for more and more. The taco itself had just enough spice to it that you didn't need green or red sauce but you added it anyways because it intensified the party in your mouth. Best part was the touch of sliced pineapple that would calm all your tastebuds down just enough to get the next bite and again repeat. Horchata was also great can't wait for dinner now
google avatar

Alexia V.

Yelp
We stopped by Thlaco Taco in the late afternoon and were really impressed with the service. The chairs, however, were so uncomfortable that it made me wonder if they prefer people not to dine in. We tried the tacos de al pastor, and they were amazing! If you visit, you definitely have to try them. We also had the tacos de carne asada, which could have used a bit more flavor, but they were still pretty good. I tried the carne asada vampiro, and it was delicious--maybe the cheese made all the difference? As for the loaded TJ fries, the potatoes were unfortunately a bit bland. All in all, we'd definitely go back for the Al pastor tacos--they're just that good! However, the uncomfortable seating and the lack of flavor in the carne asada are why I decided to rate it 4 stars.

Yelp
Best tacos around!!!! Truly outstanding flavor! Lengua tacos, Al pastor, and steak tacos! Delicious!!! Always will recommend the place. Good serving size, great flavor!

Kalen H.

Yelp
Tasted horrible steak tacos were unseasoned and the texture was chewy literally like rubber. The rice and beans tasted good. Nothing really to spectacular about either one but they both definitely tasted better than the steak tacos I ordered.

Yelp
This is a wonderful little spot located in Hanover Park, conveniently situated just off of County Farm Road. They had to temporarily close their doors due to some flooding, but have now reopened in a strip mall alongside Rosati's, a cleaner, and a nail salon. The seating area is quite small, so it can fill up quickly, especially during peak hours. When my party arrived, the place was empty, but it filled up pretty fast on a Saturday around 1:30 PM. Nevertheless, the service is very prompt, and the staff is always happy to offer recommendations if you're not sure what to choose from the menu. They offer specials on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and I personally recommend the Malita con Asada. It's a Tijuana-style quesadilla that is packed with flavor, and I paired it with their delicious Verde sauce, which was not spicy at all. Additionally, I tried their piña con Coco Agua Fresca, and it was easily a 10 out of 10. Overall, this is a fantastic choice for a quick and satisfying meal.

Jeffrey R.

Yelp
Food was great. Ordered the queso birria tacos dinner and loved it! You need to wait a little bit that's cause everything is made to order and nothing is sitting.
google avatar

Kurt N.

Yelp
It was good but the consume was a bit on the salty side and it cost more than other places i go for tacos. However this was one of the few places that has birria tacos
google avatar

Yelp
Food is so good., the staff friendly is small place not a lot of tables. No restroom that's a bummer.

Yelp
FLAVOR FLAVOR FLAVOR is so very good! Meats have an intense amount of flavor from marinating saturating the deliciousness into every bite. For the 3 taco dinner - chose 3 different meats to give them each a try - quesabirria - Asada - Al Pastor They were all delicious and not sure I could pick a favorite. We also ordered an Asada burrito which had the same delicious marinated meat. HEAT - I love a great heat - the salsa was on the border of way too much for me - so next time I'll ask if they have anything I can cut it with that's milder. If ordering for kiddos - make sure to talk to them about mild options as my 3 tacos were far too much heat to give to a little All tortillas are freshly made in-house ! Yumm Call them to place your order (primarily a carry-out) place and there's a few details for each type of taco that they'll want to make sure they prepare as you like. I went with their typical preparations They have a few menu items that aren't typical / familiar that we will be trying next time (mulitas / vampiros)
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite tacos in the area, hands down! From their handmade tortillas to their mouth-watering al pastor, Thlaco Taco hits the spot every time we visit. The owners are very passionate about their business and are proud of their roots and family - fun fact, their dad was featured on the Netflix series Taco Chronicles: Cross the Border! It's a relatively small place, mostly take out orders but our first visit, we sat at the window to eat our tacos. Pro tip if you do that: if you don't have "chef hands/fingers", the tacos are HOT HOT. I'm a child. I held my taco unapologetically with 2 napkins to keep my fingers safe. And I may have burnt my tongue slightly, but it was WORTH IT! I think the "adult Capri Sun" pouches for their drinks are cute but a bit too trendy for me - I need my drinks to fit in my cup holder if I need a sip in the car. Overall, though it's a little more expensive than other Mexican restaurants around, I still recommend Thlaco to all of my friends wanting to try something new and amazing!
google avatar

Franco R.

Yelp
Tacos Tijuana style bursting in flavor. good tasting salsas. Cool looking inside. Waiting time when dining-in needs improvement.
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
Do not skip out on this place! To start the tortillas are hand made, the asada meat was tender and fresh with great flavor. I also had an Al pastor taco that had that authentic TJ style. The cucumber lime drink was very refreshing and not overly sweet which I like. Very much looking forward to their opening of their second location!
google avatar

Nilam P.

Yelp
Well seasoned chicken tacos! My husband also likes their pastor! My one gripe is that they charged me for "extra meat" when I asked them to put having 1/2 serving of each meats on a burrito. They also do not follow instructions for special requests such as no rice on my burrito!

Brad Z.

Yelp
I'll start with the food was very good however portions and prices will keep me from coming back. For just a handful of el pastor tacos, the tacos were tiny. Spent way too much money to get tiny tacos.

Ajay P.

Yelp
10/10 recommend! The food, service, everything about this place is amazing! My favorites are the carne asada burritos and queso Birria tacos! But you can't go wrong with anything on the menu! The people working here are also always so friendly and nice.
google avatar

Jady L.

Yelp
Great service, food amazing!!!! The only downside was the sitting area . They only have high tops and not a lot of tables available. I will definitely come back. Their food is amazing!!!!
google avatar

Jen J.

Yelp
Everything we had from here was memorably delicious. We had chicken, carne asada, and chile relleno tacos with homemade tortillas. Al pastor burrito was excellent with pineapples. Great salsas too. Fan of their environmentally-conscious packaging with no styrofoam. Recommend and hope to return.
google avatar

Joe D.

Yelp
Food was great place looks clean. It seems to be a family own business but the only issue with it is they don't have a washroom for the customers they do have a seating area which makes no sense because you don't have a place to go to the washroom afterwards, and for that reason, I get this place to thumbs down. On One More thing look at the screenshots both menus have different pricing does need to be updated as well. When I asked him they don't know what to tell me so as you can see their flavors, they taste of their food is good but there's some issues in that place they need to be fixed and addressed immediately and they will definitely have all five stars

Sammy F.

Yelp
Honestly, the food is not good. I ordered a torta and I assumed it would come with cheese, beans, lettuce, tomato, avocado, mayo, etc. but it was just beans, cheese, meat, little guac, and cilantro. I probably should've checked the menu for the ingredients and that's my fault. However, I eat a lot of tortas and I'm use to it coming with all the ingredients. A traditional torta. The asada meat was very salty. And for $10!? My family also had the tacos and they're very tiny. For $4 each taco!? The tortillas really do not taste handmade. Overall do no recommend. You can go to the 2 brothers that's 10 minutes away and sit down in a nice Mexican ambiance and the food is cheaper and more delicious.
google avatar

Guido L.

Yelp
The food is very good here. The owner was very friendly and made an excellent suggestion when I asked her what I should have if I was only going to be there once. All the employees smiled when I asked the question. This is more of a takeout place. There is not a lot of room to sit down. It takes some time to prepare the food also, so I would order ahead next time. Prices were reasonable. The sauce they give you is a little spicy, and the food also has a little kick so taste it first. Don't just dump it on. The only thing I don't like about this place is the name. It's terrible. They need a serious name change. Hard to pronounce. Hard to describe. Same goes for the name of the dishes, at least for me. But if you are in the area and want tacos, this is the place.
google avatar

Marcus G.

Yelp
I've never tried tacos from this region before and I was pleasantly surprised. I've never heard of vampiros before but I'd strongly recommend trying one, it's crunchy and cheesy. The tacos were great too the green sauce is like an avocado sauce. Not much seating inside so I'd suggest ordering to go.

Miegan W.

Yelp
We ordered tacos and quesadillas for takeout. Everything was delicious. The homemade tortillas are just amazing.

Oscar B.

Yelp
Great food, but probably best to order by phone for pickup instead of services like Grubhub and DoorDash. Staff just saw my order for pickup as I got there and food was about 20 minutes late. Might be a little hangry enough to come here but at least the food is delicious.
google avatar

Steve J.

Yelp
The best Mexican food around. Burritos are amazing! Grilled pineapple with Al pastor, what a beautiful combination! Drinks are yummy and fun to do many flavors!

Barbara R.

Yelp
This was our first time there and the food was amazing. There are very few places to get al pastor from the spit. It was as good as we have in Mexico! Highly recommend it. Can't wait to see how their Arlington Heights location is for them.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
The food is very good. This place is like an upscale carry out spot. One hint of advice though. You will not get your food fast so prepare for that. The cooks really put their heart into making the food. You will not just get an ordinary taco if you order a taco. I guess I should change my 3 star rating to more stars. Reason I didn't is because the time it took to make and I kinda wanted something a little simpler. But it was good. You just have to prepare to go here.
google avatar

Yelp

Yelp
Authentic Tijuana flavor. Didn't disappoint. The staff are super nice . Prices are reasonable.

Yelp
This place was everything I was going it would be. Food was outstanding great Al pastor and the Birria was amazing. Friendly staff and made everyone feel welcomed.
google avatar

Yelp
Love their Quesabirria Con Consume! Portions are great, service is friendly, and the inside is modern and clean.
google avatar

Lina L.

Yelp
First time spotting this place. We ordered Mulita de Asada, Tacos, Burritos all in one sitting plus a burrito to take home. Favorite was the Mulita and Tacos because of the Homemade tasting tortillas. I definitely have to agreed that if you pay for a sitting of $$$$; the goods should be proportion. With that Restaurants survive in measuring your ounces for your servings and implement the cost of goods which we know inflation is at a rise. So A Mulita is homemade very thin with another layered of tortilla.....Awesome Stuff !!!! now adding the filling???; This is the Value!! Ounces did not meet for $$$$ Tacos were AMAZING and half the price of Mulita This is definitely a go to for some Awesome Tacos

Brenda B.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place to me and it did not disappoint. The food was excellent! The service was fast, and really friendly. And I like the atmosphere and how they have the inside decorated, although it is a little small, so perhaps meant a little more for carry out during the busiest times.
google avatar

Yelp
Homemade corn tortillas, fresh meat & tons of flavor What more could you want?! Get over there asap. Get yourself some steak tacos, birra & al pastor, mmmm. Birra & al pastor have a little kick. Make sure to get the cheese on your birra taco.
