Guide to South Carolina's Hammock Coast

"A charming small-town lunch spot celebrated for classic local fare—fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, and ubiquitous sweet tea—and a reliably excellent daily po' boy sandwich available with shrimp, oysters, or whiting." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. 3 Best Day Trips from Charleston, South Carolina | Condé Nast Traveler

"Not much has changed here over the past 75-plus years of the café’s operation, but that’s just the way the regulars like it. It’s a simple dining room, with tables, a couple of booths and a counter, and its exposed brickwork predates any similar concessions to fashion that newer cafés display. There’s a refreshing lack of pretension to the aesthetic—and it’s not a curated, vintage style, it’s just always been this way. Breakfast is served until 10:45 a.m., and along with the usual diner suspects, the chef has a few specialties up his sleeve. The Low Country Creole Omelette is made with generous portions of local crab and the Harborwalk Bagel Sandwich barely contains its three eggs, two cheeses, and bacon. Lunch is even more expansive, with a comprehensive sandwich menu, seafood baskets with shrimp or flounder, and a savory Low Country Gumbo. There are daily specials that run through Southern classics such as Chicken-fried Chicken, plus a salad selection if you’re in the market for something a little healthier." - Paul Oswell

On our way back to Charleston from Myrtle Beach, we decided to make a quick stop in Georgetown. While walking back from Harborwalk, we stumbled upon Thomas Cafe—it was 9 AM, so we figured it was the perfect time to grab breakfast at a locally owned spot. The place had a cozy vibe, with several locals already settled in, chatting and starting their day over hearty breakfasts. Thomas Cafe, located on Front Street in Georgetown, SC, has been a community favorite for over 75 years—and it’s easy to see why. This charming diner has long been known for its no-frills, satisfying breakfast and lunch offerings, attracting both loyal locals and curious visitors. We went with our usual: French toast, coffee, hot chocolate, and a three-egg veggie omelet. The food was tasty and had that authentic local flavor. The cafe seemed to be run by a small team of elderly ladies who were doing their best to keep up with orders and customer needs. It’s always heartwarming to see local businesses thriving. They also offer a kids’ menu for both breakfast and lunch, making it a family-friendly stop.

Google
Excellent little place for Breakfast and lunch. Homemade offerings and reasonably good prices. A place that gives you a hometown feel. We have had breakfast and lunches here. Always good and friendly service.

Google
Thomas Cafe for breakfast and it was busy with a prayer group on the side and about 10 others at opening 7AM! Very good and at $8 a plate you can’t find a better deal! Came back on dock area and noticed this beauty on our walk!

If you’re ever in Georgetown, South Carolina. I highly recommend eating at Thomas Café on front Street . They serve breakfast /lunch and the food is amazing. I ordered the Low Country Creole Omelet , which is huge and comes with 3 eggs, Chedder Cheese, homemade creole sauce ( green peppers, onions), and loaded with fresh local shrimp, which came with every bite. I like my food spicy and when I asked for Carolina Reaper seasoning I never thought that the kind server would return with shaker. Owner/Chef Ernest Brunson has been serving patrons for nearly 20 years. This is where the locals go, and where visitors are welcomed.

Google
This place usually has a great breakfast. I went against what I usually ordered and got the biscuits and gravy with a single side of pancake. I hate to say it but I was very disappointed in the biscuits and gravy. I probably won't get that again. I typically get corned beef, hash and eggs which is excellent. On the high note, the pancake was absolutely great

Google
Thomas's cafe is a true hometown breakfast and lunch cafe...simple and delicious, the atmosphere feels like a step into a simpler time. Service was great and they seemed to help each other which is a nice experience for guests. You can count on the food being good! Make sure they are open before you go🙂

Google
Absolutely the BEST biscuit that I've had at a restaurant! The food is delicious; portions are good; prices are very reasonable; and the service is excellent.

Yelp
This place never seems to amaze me. Its hometown welcoming atmosphere with fast and friendly service is a staple along with the bottomless coffee cups. The food is amazing and a great way to start your day off right! Everyone I am in Georgetown this is the only place I eat breakfast

Yelp
Thomas Cafe takes you back to the days when diners were common in small towns. A great breakfast menu at great prices with great service. Your coffee mug will never be less than half full. So many breakfast joints have raised their prices to crazy levels, but not Thomas Cafe. A great choice to start your day.

Yelp
Very small town, Very small cafe Am always looking for places just like this when traveling...just reviewed 2 earlier. it is on the 'main street' of Georgetown. We were there for breakfast as the last ones in and left as their lunch crowd was starting. Vacation Breakfast!! Pancakes or waffles, eggs and bacon/or sausage. Lots of butter and syrup.....a yearly indulgence. This place met the requirements. The food was all prepared within eyesight if wanted to watch. I would say the bacon more than the rest was the best. Very small so don't be surprised, if I lived locally it wouldn't be a surprise if I wasn't a regular. I enjoyed the food and the service was very good. The setting on main street reminded me of places I have lived.

Frank C.

Yelp
Good morning everyone my wife and I went here for breakfast during our vacation. The service and food were outstanding. The food is very affordable and the staff were extremely hospitable. I would recommend everyone visit this business and enjoy the southern hospitality.

Yelp
Unassuming little Front Street cafe full of things that make for a local's favorite. Admittedly understaffed but you barely notice from the hustle of the two servers and speed of food delivery (you may be seated at a table that hasn't been bussed yet but that's a minor issue for me). The prices are amazing compared to just about anywhere else! My wife got the bagel sandwich with 3 eggs and FOUR slices of bacon (she only ate half and the rest is her breakfast tomorrow!). I had the bacon omelette and was expecting the typical bacon bits, but this thing had full slices of bacon in it! I also tried the yellow stone ground grits which were really good! We will be back!

Yelp
The best places are found by happenstance. We were on our way to a day of shelling and needed to eat lunch. This place was the find of a lifetime. My wife had shrimp and grits and I had the seafood gumbo with a side of fried green tomatoes. We couldn't have asked for a better meal experience. The food was hot a fresh. The service was polite.. if you are near Georgetown,SC this place is a must stop.

Renay M.

Yelp
This was a wonderful surprise on our trip through SC. I had the gumbo that was made that day and it came with fried green tomatoes and corn bread. Delicious!!! My husband had the Rueben with homemade potato salad and he said the same about it. The wait staff were so friendly and attentive. Be sure to check them out if passing through the area.

Yelp
The best place in Georgetown for breakfast, as far as we're concerned! I love it when we go to a place, like Cheers, where everybody knows your name! You can tell that it's a local's sort of place, as everyone who walked in was greeted by their name! Well...except for us, but that's because it was our first time there. We were still greeted enthusiastically! My husband ordered eggs over easy, rye toast, sausage links, home fries and coffee. He was over the moon with the way everything was cooked and served steaming hot. He was especially impressed with the home fries. Crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside! I ordered the three pancake breakfast. There was a two-pancake option and i should've stuck with that. These pancakes are GENEROUS and quite delicious! Our coffees were never less than half full and we certainly never felt rushed to leave. Our waitress was possibly the most pleasant waitress we've ever dealt with and was happy in her work. Perfectly attentive, not overly so. The menu had a nice variety of choices as well. Don't think you can go wrong here!

Michael C.

Yelp
Based on an off-hand remark by a friend, I decided to try Thomas Cafe. So glad that I did! Fried shrimp were large, plump, and perfectly fried. Onion rings were the best I have had in a long time. Cole slaw was excellent. Service was impeccable! Decor was as expected. Probably the best restaurant meal I have had in many years and at an incredibly affordable price. I can highly recommend this place with no hesitation.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast or lunch. Always friendly staff with very good food in large quantities. I had a western omelette, raisin bread toast and a side of corned beef hash. Five stars for staff, food and very good coffee.

Kimberly A.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. We had the shrimp po boy sandwich. The shrimp were huge and fried perfectly. It was delicious. I highly recommend. Quick and friendly service.
google avatar

Melanee B.

Yelp
Small, basic, but well done! I had the bagel sandwich and as basic as t sounds, it was stuffed full of layers of egg, bacon, and gooey cheese! The servers were kind. I sampled some of my friend's potatoes and those were pretty darn delicious too! Personally, I ordered cream cheese to add.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
When I went there was a short line waiting to get in. Good sign. This cafe is the real deal for South Carolina dining. I had the shrimp and grits. Fantastic. The decadent red eye gravy is what makes it shine. The fried green tomatoes were also excellent. The service was good. I'd love to go back again someday. If you are in Georgetown, this is definitely worth a try.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick breakfast. Waitress was nice but the food is a step down from waffle house. Tables were sticky but the locals seem to love the place. I got the blueberry pancakes and they were ok. My husband got the biscuits and gravy and he couldn't finish it. He believes it was canned gravy.

William P.

Yelp
Great food and service! Very friendly staff will be going back in Georgetown. Highly recommend it
google avatar

Trisha T.

Yelp
I only wish they had better weekend hours. I can't get there during the week. My husband Likes the breakfast menu, but I usually order off the Specials. Good hometown cooking. You are safe to order anything as it is all good.

A O.

Yelp
Food was good, but service was not. The wait staff completely ignored us despite trying to flag them down and making eye contact while doing so. Not a pleasant experience
google avatar

Yelp
This place was absolutely wonderful. Their broccoli casserole was delish. Their fried green tomatoes were to die for. Their house dressing was unique and tasty.

Kelly D.

Yelp
If your looking for a straightforward southern breakfast- with friendly speedy service, this is your place. Had the creole omelet with cheese grits- and a biscuit. I'd order the same in a second-
google avatar

Yelp
Simply THE BEST shrimp and grits on the planet!! Our vacation doesn't start until we've been to Thomas Cafe and had our SAG fix. We've been coming here for 25+ years and it's one of the highlights of the year for the whole family! Thanks, Thomas Cafe!!

Trena B.

Yelp
Loved it. Very friendly great food. Had fish basket delicious. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
Love to eat lunch at this historic cafe that has been around since 1930 in a building that was built around the time of the civil war . They are open till 2 for breakfast and lunch . You can order off the menu or from the daily specials for 8.50 written on a blackboard everyday. The meal comes with Ice tea as well. They also have another blackboard with their homemade deserts such as bread pudding which I think was 2.95 . This visit I got the main choice of shrimp Creole and my three sides from the blackboard I chose broccoli casserole , field peas and a fresh cut fruit cup this came with a biscuit . But I also always order a side of their fried green tomatoes they are the best I have ever had, they dip them in a buttermilk batter. The shrimp creole was some of the best I have ever eaten also ,notice the big shrimp served on top none of those tiny salad shrimp that some restaurants use. Someone new bought the building Thomas cafe is in and added a bakery next door after they remodeled both sides trying to repurpose some of the old wood and they used the original brick walls from when the building was built and did find a fireplace that was hidden under All the wood on the walls so they exposed that in the new renovations, they did keep some of the old wood booths so now it kinda reminded me of a New York City loft , did kinda miss the old time Thomas cafe interior but the same person owns the cafe and still does that great southern cooking , so it is a do not miss if you are in Myrtle Beach area take the 20 min drive down to George Town it's South Carolina's third oldest city .

Yelp
Great place for lunch. Had pastrami, BLT, crab cake and chicken salad. All very good. Very busy but personable staff.

Kimberly B.

Yelp
Oh my gosh. We came here for breakfast and it was EXCELLENT. I had a breakfast sandwich on a biscuit with grits and it was SO good. Husband had the standard eggs, bacon, home fries, toast, and he really liked it. We can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
Small, local, excellent. We stopped in for a later lunch. One had a house salad with fried chicken and one had the shrimp basket. Both were fresh and excellent. The service was perfect - attentive, thoughtful, and not overbearing. We usually end up in one of the places with a river view, but this will be a definite lunch option in the future.

Betts N.

Yelp
Remains continuously good! We a late morning breakfast at the Cafe! I love their corned beef hash and poached eggs. Their breakfast potatoes are wonderful. If you like crispy bacon, they hit it out of the park!

Betts N.

Yelp
We love to go there for breakfast! They are now closed on Saturday and Sunday, but the Coffee Break across the street is open on weekends and during the week. Thomas' has a long history of serving Georgetown and folks drive from far away as well as many locals enjoy their unique food! The Prince George breakfast is my boyfriend's favorite and mine is the Corn-beef hash, with poached eggs. They have great home fries which are nice and crispy. They also offer a shrimp breakfast! They are open for lunch, but not for supper. You will not be disappointed! Betts Maynard Nixon

Steven F.

Yelp
Great southern hospitality, wonderful fresh tasting food! People! Ask the locals where to eat, they'll tell you Thomas Cafe!
google avatar

Schneider J.

Yelp
When you come here, Ya gotta have a chicken biscuit at this place!! It has a down home cooking style and the smaller café appeal
google avatar

Lynn W.

Yelp
I absolutely love this wonderful place! Great prices, delicious food. Home style southern cooking at its best. I love coming here. The staff have been there for years and they know my order by heart. One of my favorite restaurants in town
google avatar

Art S.

Yelp
A real locals place. Outstanding local favorites. My lunch special "pilau" included 3 sides and corn bread for $8.50. You just can't beat that. My wife, who is not a big fan of Lima beans tried my Lima beans and okra. She commented that if she could cook Lima's like that she would eat them everyday. A must try for breakfast or lunch while you visit Georgetown.

Michelle C.

Yelp
This is the oldest eatery in Georgetown, and it's one of the best followed by the River Room. I cannot tell you how much I love Thomas Cafe.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
This is a place where the locals like to go, and to me, that's a good thing! The food was really good, as well as the service. This cafe is in the Historic district of Georgetown, SC. There were plenty of other restaurants around but we wanted just a quick bite before heading back up the coast. It was also reasonably priced. My husband had the flounder basket, which comes with home fries and cole slaw. The home fries are awesome! They're obviously made right there - not frozen. I had the special- the corned beef & cabbage, which I was told was made only at this time of year. That is unfortunate, because it was a tasty treat! This special also came with 3 sides (and there are plenty to choose from). I had extra cabbage, cole slaw, and mixed fruit. They had the specials and sides written up on the blackboard so it made me think the sides also changed from time to time. Highly recommended for a tasty, quick lunch.

Van B.

Yelp
Back for lunch yesterday. Two had the lunch special, I had the Reuben. All were very good. The Thomas Cafe never disappoints. I also picked up a stuffed pumpkin a local artist was selling for a gift. Very reasonable prices for all. I will be back.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Awesome spot for down home southern eats.i had the Prince George breakfast and I'm pleased to say I'm fat n happy now.sevice is impeccable too.

Blake K.

Yelp
We were extremely disappointed, ALL of the staff acted as if they didn't want to be there, never said thank you or you're welcome, and they only catered to what seemed to be the "local crowd". The food was subpar at best, and apparently it takes 45 minutes to cook just eggs and bacon there. They should be ashamed of the way they treat newcomers to town. Don't waste your time and money here.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Well at first I was in love with this place with its Mayberry home town style it southern cookin and it seemed like the place all the locals went but I kept trying to ignore how unhappy the waitresses were! They must all hate working there. They walk around with long faces and sling your dinner down in front of you like they were feeding hogs. I finally stopped going because no matter how good the food is no one wants it filled with hate on the way to the table!
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
Delicious. Simple. Authentic Georgetown, Low Country food and service! How have I not reviewed his place in all the years I have been coming here!?!? Do you want to eat where I hope the locals eat, it's this place. Breakfast is amazing, lunch is amazing, dinner is amazing. The specials are always spot on. The waitstaff is appropriately friendly, not over the top, which I prefer. The food is fresh and their kitchen moves at an amazing pace. My pro tip: get the fried green tomatoes.
google avatar

Bruce W.

Yelp
I guess we've been coming to Thomas café for the last 10 years for our vacation week The men get together and we call it breakfast buddies Good food the waitresses are great and the Keylime pie is wonderful

Kathy S.

Yelp
Came up from Charleston to meet a good friend from Myrtle Beach here for a weekday brunch so we could catch each other up on our growing businesses. The place was perfect with a good distance between tables, amazing service, great food at excellent prices. We were so comfortable that we ran over past the time they close to turn over breakfast to lunch. The ladies were so gracious they didn't even mention it until we realized we were the only ones in the place. They just laughed and told is we were just fine. We will both be back with our families...and mind the time.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Amazing local flair and Low Country cooking with wonderful service and a friendly waitstaff that will be like your best friends when you leave. Food is always great. Come early if you want a table or be prepared to wait but it's worth it.
google avatar

Food Blogger B.

Yelp
Good southern cooking. The place has had the same name since about 1929. Very Mayberry. Small, kind community
google avatar

Catfish B.

Yelp
Definitely get the gumbo if you come here it is fantastic and it comes with fried green tomatoes. Perfect lunch spot for a quick stop
google avatar

Yelp
My parents were dropping me off at the airport in Charleston from Myrtle Beach and I was to choose the restaurant. After looking I found Thomas Cafe...I can't tell you enough that hours later I am still full and still dreaming of their shrimp and grits. By far probably one of my top 10 dishes I have ever had...VERY Rich but I am already craving the dish. Very sweet people from the servers to people eating there! Counting the days till I come back!
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Ate here for lunch...it is only open for breakfast and lunch. A typical country restaurant, has sandwiches and sides on the lunch menu, but also have daily special. I had chicken dumplings (the special) with sides of fried okra, macaroni and cheese, and rice and gravy. The chicken and dumplings were quite good; I didn't have to add any pepper, which I typically have to add at other restaurants. Service was quick. If I were in town on a regular basis, I'd probably eat here for lunch once a week. If you're in town during lunch and are looking for good, small town lunch fare, this place should do fine by you.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
This hidden corner of pure joy embraces the spirit of the south beautifully. The food is delicious and service awesome. I love that they give you real teaspoons to stir your tea.

Yelp
Stopped in on our way back to the Myrtle Beach airport. It was the only place open on the quaint downtown of Georgetown, SC. Friendly service and good food, typical small town cafe with booths, a breakfast bar, and old styled refrigerators in the back. Really nice place. Ordered a breakfast for around 6 bucks, included two eggs, grits, 3 pancakes, and sausage. The coffee was hot, fresh, and quickly refilled, perfect little breakfast joint.
