I had a really disappointing experience at Thomas Tavern. I’m visiting from New York and was honestly surprised by how poorly things were handled.
First, the guy at the entrance was extremely rude. There was a $5 cover charge, which I can understand for some places, but charging it after 1 AM for what’s basically just a regular bar felt unreasonable. He said there was live music with packed bar inside. He insulted us saying “oh you think it is with $5? What made it worse was that the door guy initially let us in without charging us after 1 am. There was no more live music and empty tables with scattered few people. Later, he came inside looking for us and angrily demanded the cover fee. We were completely willing to pay, but the way he approached us was very disrespectful.
To be fair, Jamie the bartender was great and made me a really good lemon drop, so that was one bright spot in the experience.
Unfortunately, the food was also very poor. It took a long time to come out, and when it finally did, it tasted stale and low quality. After the confrontation with the door guy, the whole vibe was ruined. We ended up paying the cover, closing our tab, and leaving without finishing our drinks or eating the food we had ordered.
At that point it wasn’t even about the money anymore — it was about the disrespectful service and how customers were treated. My local friend was honestly embarrassed to be showing me around his city after that experience.
Overall, rude entrance staff, poor food quality, and a very uncomfortable interaction that made us leave early. Definitely not a place I’d return to or recommend.
