"Thomas Sweet Ice Cream is a New Jersey-based mini-chain founded in Princeton in 1979. It offers 30 flavors that tend to be on the creamy side, including faddish ones like birthday bash (containing cake), vanilla Heath Bar crunch, banana pudding, and kiwi strawberry soft serve. Then there are ice cream sandwiches, shakes, cakes, pies, smoothies, and sundaes, the latter with all sorts of syrups, fresh berries, and candy toppings." - Robert Sietsema

Yelp
Best ice cream in New Brunswick! My coworkers and I love to take a walk here in the summer. Best place to go for an afternoon pick me up!

Daniel T.

Yelp
TLDR: good consistency but poor toppings I've had more chocolate - KitKat blend ins than I can count. This iteration in New Brunswick was one of the lesser versions. The KitKat in the topping station were broken and crumbled. When blended into the ice cream the stale wafers were distinct - every bite was like chewing pieces of styrofoam. The flavor and consistency were fine though. My friend had the same order as me, and theirs was noticeably smaller / more melted than mine. I'd stick with the other locations

Yelp
I had never been here while I went to Rutgers so i wanted to try it at least once. Two younger females, I'm assuming students, were working the ice cream in the back, and two older women were in the front. We ordered our ice creams and left. Halfway through, I noticed a hair in mine, and after pulling it out, I promptly lost my appetite and threw it away. I realized after, I should have taken a photo but I was so disgusted. Hair isn't the end of the world, but I think they should probably wear their hair up or in hats or something of the like.

Yelp
My fave ice cream in the New Brunswick area. Everything made fresh and homemade. Super creamy ice cream. My favorite flavors are: birthday mix, banana Oreo (I know it sounds crazy but it's delicious!), dulce de leche & banana creme pie. They always have new flavors so try it out. Plus their waffle cones are made fresh from the press. Always delicious.

Yelp
What is there not to love! Great ice cream, great chocolate and great staff! Staff is very friendly and sweet! Ice cream and Chocolate is made with the finest ingredients! Strongly recommend trying it if you still haven't!

Cait U.

Yelp
Happy that this is a spot that accommodates for allergies. I will always come here for ice cream and milkshakes. Best in Jersey.

Yelp
We came here last night after some disappointing bolis next door and liked our sweet treats much better. This is one of those ice cream establishments that overwhelms you with choices, so it takes forever to figure out what you're going to get. Everybody was happy with their choices. Our kiddo got chocolate with gummy worms (judge not lest...) and one of us enjoyed a small portion of rocky road. The other indulged with a scoop of mint oreo and a scoop of mint chocolate chip; the latter had a bit of that toothpasty aftertaste, but not aggressively so. They're generous with sprinkles! The staff is efficient and friendly enough. There's limited seating and something about this place never quite feels clean, but we like it. And it scratches a nostalgic itch for one of us--she's happy to see that it hasn't changed much since she went to Rutgers twenty years ago. 3.5 stars, rounding up.

Yelp
I used to love getting ice cream from Thomas Sweet Ice Cream in Princeton as a child. I absolutely had to visit when I was in the area. The New Brunswick location also didn't disappoint! I had a regular single scoop sundae with sweet cream ice cream, Nutella fudge, and broken waffles. I LOVED IT!!! Sure, it was a chilly day but every day is a good ice cream day especially if it's Thomas Sweet Ice Cream. Cheers!

K A.

Yelp
Lots of varieties including seasonal flavors. Made on premise. Helpful, patient, friendly employees. Glad I finally had a chance to try their ice cream. Will definitely return.

Dominic B.

Yelp
I've dropped by here several times for an ice cream run since it's close to campus and it has a great selection of ice cream. I like the variety and haven't really come across any flavors I didn't like so far. With that being said, I do wish they gave more ice cream for what you pay for. It's a bit pricy for even a small cup, but if you're in need of an ice cream fix near campus and don't mind the price, it's a decent option.

Jodi B.

Yelp
I've been going here for 10+ years and thoroughly recommend. Thomas Sweets is a local shop that has a small town, homey feel despite being in the city of New Brunswick! Their treats are delicious, obviously made with love, and wrapped nicely! It's hard not to splurge!

Aditi R.

Yelp
The owners are so sweet. I am a college student and we had a king chat about Rutgers. Their shop is so cute and when you enter you are treated with the cute plush toys and glass cases filled with chocolates and fudge. I got the Carmel apple when I went in the fall, it was great!

Mike A.

Yelp
A popular spot for college students and ice cream fans alike at Rutgers University. With endless flavors and toppings (mix-ins) you'll have to come back to test out all of that the menu has to offer. The ice cream isn't as much creamy as you'd find on a farm but definitely on the sweeter side, like the name entails. You can't go wrong with a cone, milkshake, or sundae. Definitely give Thomas Sweets a try at any of their locations!

Joyce K.

Yelp
My friend and I went on a late night ice cream run where I got some Oreos n creme ice cream with a Kit Kat and she got a strawberry smoothie with bananas and milk! The smoothie was creamy and tasted like a playa bowls smoothie, which some people might enjoy! It was a surprisingly good smoothie for an ice cream location!

Kathleen L.

Yelp
I've been to many ice cream shops this one has much to offer with flavors toppings and different ways to make your ice cream dreams come true if your in the area you should make it a stop.

Melissa W.

Yelp
With a long line outside on a hot summer day, this is clearly a local favorite. We opted for the coffee chip blended with oreos. It had a thick, whipped consistency, and was tasty. My point of contention is that the ice cream is very expensive. Our tiny cup was $7. I heard the lady ahead of us asking if her serving was the kiddie size or single scoop size. I try my best to support local shops but their ice cream to price ratio is way too stingy.

Kirsten K.

Yelp
The iconic New Brunswick ice cream shop Thomas Sweet is every bit as excellent as its reputation! This is ice cream I will drive out of my way for. When I am craving delicious rich flavorful ice cream, I drive 20 minutes past two other ice cream stores to get to Thomas Sweet. Every flavor here is done to perfection! The natural flavors of the ingredients shine through. The vanilla has real vanilla beans in it. The chocolate is made with high-quality chocolate. All the fruit flavors like peach or strawberry have zesty pieces of the fruit in them. Some flavors are unique to Thomas Sweet, so be adventurous and ask to try a spoonful of Cheesecake Ice Cream or "Dexter Freebish" and it might just become your new favorite! You're allowed to try before you buy. The special thing that Thomas Sweet is known for is the "blend in". You have a choice of about 20 different items like Girl Scout thin mint cookie, Reese's peanut butter cups, or graham crackers to have blended into whatever ice cream flavor you choose. You can be endlessly creative in your combinations! All of the blended items can also be added as dry toppings, or you can pick wet toppings like syrupy walnuts, hot fudge, hot caramel, or liquid marshmallow. Besides wafer and sugar cones, Thomas Sweet also has specialty chocolate dipped cones in all sorts of varieties such as with nuts or sprinkles. They also offer packed pints to go and have prepared ice cream cakes which are sweet and yummy! And you can buy a Thomas Sweet tee shirt! This place gets crowded with lines out the door sometimes but it's worth the wait. Staff is friendly and attentive, and has an efficient system of taking orders and filling them that keeps the line moving right along. The staff really knows about teamwork and it is impressive to see them in action. Seating inside is limited in this little shop, but benches on the sidewalk outside are a nice place to sit and watch the bustling street life. Half the time I get approached by people asking for money but that's a normal occurrence all along Easton Ave. I usually park in the New Brunswick parking deck by the train station and walk the few minutes to Thomas Sweet. Sometimes metered street parking is available.

Ali-Zain R.

Yelp
Been going there for decades. Service is on and off but the items are quality. Sometimes you get topped off on a pint size blendin but most times I have been left short of top of pint level.

Katarina L.

Yelp
A MUST visit if you are in town! It's a staple in New Brunswick and for everyone at Rutgers. The shop is broken up into two: Ice cream and chocolates. Ice cream flavors change with the season, all delicious, and they are famous for their blend ins, which are just very thick milkshakes with toppings blended in (see what they did there?). As you should do in every single ice cream shop you walk into, make sure to try a few flavors before you order. Now to the chocolate shop! It's honestly my favorite of the two. You can smell the chocolate as soon as you walk in and after making a quick loop you'll be surprised with how many little treats you want to buy. Goodies from here like a chocolate Rutgers "R" or candy dinosaurs were always my go-to for gifts. I used to live across the street and would treat myself to chocolate covered strawberries more than I'd like to admit. Stop reading and just go! Seriously, right now.

Yelp
Thomas Sweet is some of the best ice cream in Central Jersey, maybe even in the whole state. It tastes amazing and you generally get a lot of ice cream despite the hefty price tag. Fair warning, the ice cream is rich, so for those of you with upset stomachs, do not rush this amazing treat. It will pass through you like a bat out of hell. Take your time, it will just make it more enjoyable. Next door they sell candy and chocolate, which is also expensive, but I hear good things so there is something for every pallet. I recommend both.

Laura J.

Yelp
I used to frequent this place a lot until I saw a roach in there... not once but twice. The ice cream is good, but I can't go back inside because it gives me heebiejeebies. The staff is very nice, and they're so helpful to me when I come in. However, I think the owner should take care of the cockroach problem.

Em K.

Yelp
There are so many ice cream parlors, but I find myself continuing to come back to Thomas Sweet for the creamiest and freshest ice cream that's consistently good. They're known for the basics, so if you're looking for interesting and seasonal flavors, I'd go somewhere else, but if you want the best cookies and cream of your life, come to TS! Sometimes there's a line, but it always moves quickly. Lately, my husband and I have been indulging and getting the ice cream delivered on Uber Eats. It usually shows up at our apartment in under 15 minutes. We also love the Thomas Sweet Cafe in Montgomery. They have extra flavors and cafe type foods and drinks.

Shakirat ..

Yelp
If you're in the mood for some delicious ice cream - this is my absolute favorite spot. I always go for the dulce de leche flavor and let me tell you, it never disappoints. But that's not all - the staff are just so friendly and welcoming, which makes the whole experience even better. And with so many different options to choose from, you're sure to find something you love.

Jack R.

Yelp
Graham cracker on top of coffee ice cream with almonds and still I felt like I be better off getting a no name Safeway brand. Tasted cheap and not creamy or delicious. I should have bought ice cream from the refrigerator at the supermarket across the street instead.

Etic W.

Yelp
the best ice cream and service around, even when the line goes out the door and up the block (thanks for those 4 benches outside so i can take a rest jen). we started enjoying thomas sweet back in college days when they first opened and i went to numerous concerts in new brunswick nothing beats a thomas sweet blend-in after eating a cheese steak at greasy tonys or a double double chease burger at white rose...my favorite flavor has been and always will be the nutter butter blend w/vanilla ice cream....emmmm; think i'll drive into new brunswick for one after i finish this review! i can even remember the time i ran to the nearest bodega for a box of nutter butter cookies when they ran out and i had to have my nutter butter blend. the ambiance leaves a little to be desired if you were eating a full meal, but for the best ice cream around, its perfect!!

Gloria K.

Yelp
Heard about this place for so long and it was about time I tried it. I was not disappointed and I get the hype. Thomas sweet has a huge variety of different ice cream flavors. They also offer many different toppings both wet and dry. My only complaint is that each topping costs over a dollar which is overpriced imo. But the ice cream is clearly good quality and I will definitely be back here again.

Audrey N.

Yelp
YAAAASSSSSS!!!! Omg I'm sooooo happy we came here for an afternoon treat!! The ice cream here is bomb and the shop is so cute! I love visiting local mom and pop ice cream joints and this is exactly what I experienced here. They have tons of ice cream and sorbet flavors and not only that but you can get soooo many toppings!! I got the Reese's Pieces ice cream topped with butterfinger candy! Whoaaaaa. Pretty sure you can get the toppings blended in too like a blizzard. Next time I'm in the area I will for sure be back! (Can you tell I love ice cream???)

Andrew O.

Yelp
Nice homemade custard stand. Vanilla soft serve with cherry dip brought back childhood memories. Mint cookies and cream was great. Custard did melt super fast and it wasn't that hot out at all. Not sure if the dip just made it melt faster or not. But it was fun

Sheila R.

Yelp
Anyone who has been to Rutgers knows that the best ice cream is at Thomas Sweets. From their chocolate chip cookie, dexter frebish, or any blend in you choose, the ice cream is always fresh and delicious. This time, we did not get any blend ins...Ice cream or froyo with candies or toppings chopped/blended in. As usual, everything was great. Hadn't been here in years and it brought back fond memories. REMEMBER THAT SPRINKLES ARE ALWAYS FREE FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART!

Sherene N.

Yelp
This is a great place to fulfill your sweet tooth. Local delivery in a RU area. Genius. They make their ice cream fresh along with fresh waffle cones and mini waffles. On the right day, the wait isn't too crazy and they can blend you up a few shakes and creations from which you can choose toppings and creams to put in almost like a McFlurry. I love the options here, almost endless and it seems that this is a "Mom and Pop" stand that locals love dearly. They are family friendly place and sometimes a whole bus load of soccer kids flood this place and the girls go into a frenzy. It works, they are usually college girls with smiles and a tip can for RU tuition contribution. Can't knock the hustle. Thomas is a great place for family fun. Sundaes, cones, chipwiches, blended ice creams and much more!

Krishi K.

Yelp
Ice cream is ice cream. Quick grab and go icecream which was really good. Definetly recommend getting icecream from here.

Jessica C.

Yelp
The ice cream was incredible! The flavors are unique. I got the chocolate covered strawberry which is strawberry flavored ice cream with chocolate chips. I also got a minty one with thin mints mixed in. The single was small-- i could have totally eaten a double!

Amy N.

Yelp
Thomas' is a Rutgers staple! My boyfriend always stops by and grabs ice cream after his exams, so on my visit to New Brunswick, I thought it was worth stopping by. No one is allowed in the store, but there is a walk up window for safe ordering. There's a great variety of flavors and both wet and dry toppings and it took me about 5 minutes to figure out what I wanted to get. I ordered a single scoop, while he ordered a sundae and the portions were beyond my expectations. The price to portion is great, as everything is really affordable, which makes my inner broke college student happy!

Marilen R.

Yelp
Thomas Sweet was a constant in my life back in college. Recently I returned to find that they haven't changed and they still serve the yummy ice cream that I once craved. My all time favorite flavor is the chocolate chip cookie - cookie flavored ice cream loaded with chocolate chips. Can't get this flavor any where else. Love the "college town" prices - one scoop for $3.64 which was practically a double. They also have a kid scoop which was almost a dollar less and was a true single scoop. Perfect when you want a little serving. The place is small with just a few tables and service is friendly. I'll never forget you Thomas Sweet and you will always have a special place in my heart.

Chippy F.

Yelp
They have good ice cream but they do not offer straws for their milkshakes. They expect you to suck down a milk shake through a whole in a plastic lid. There is no sign warning you that they do not offer straws, so if you order a milkshake you will only find out that they give you those awful lids for MILKSHAKES after they have already made it for you. Extremely silly policy for a place that offers milkshakes. Just take them off the menu.

Jessica D.

Yelp
I'm not a crazy fan of icecream, but the icecream with nuts and chocolate tasted really good (I forgot the name). They also have lots of unique flavors such as coffee oreo. The names of the flavors are on the board and not listened so I had to ask what each one of them were. However, the woman working there was very kind and sweet and let us sample some. There was a piece of hair in one of the big containers, which revoked me to sample one of the flavors that seemed interesting.

Dhara P.

Yelp
We walked into a very busy place. However, there are many employees on weekend to serve you ice creams. I really appreciated that whole menu is written with handwriting, it shows they took sometime and thoughts to put a final menu together. I am on Weight Watchers and it's very hard to find small portion ice creams. So, I decided to order kid size portion and it was perfect for my new life style!! Will definitely come back for some more Oreo & Cream Ice Cream!!

Latoya G.

Yelp
As soon as I walk into this place, I get warm fuzzies and waves of nostalgia cascading over me. I've been coming to this place for a VERY long time--having been born and bred in the great city of New Brunswick, we knew where to go to get some great ice cream... and nothing has changed. It's a small spot, but they have just enough variety to get you giddy... "oh what shall I get today??" I almost always do a blend in with vanilla ice cream and chocolate malt balls... OMG! I almost fainted when they said they were out of the malt balls, but thank goodness, the plan B (vanilla heath crunch), was just as amazing. I love this place.

Jae C.

Yelp
I love Thomas Sweet! This iconic sweet shop on Easton Ave is still extremely cute and taste awesome. The ice cream shop has amazing flavors. They have hard, soft and sorbet. They are very affordable and so is the chocolate shop next to it. Everyone that works there is really friendly. I love checking out the chocolate shop since they have really good chocolate for gifts and also you can pick your own. They are better than brand names and also half the price.

V U.

Yelp
really cute small Ice Cream shop near Rutgers. There are many flavors to choose from, but almost all of them are classic traditional ice cream flavors e.g. chocolate, rocky road, etc. Not really any creative or different flavors. Toppings are similar to other ice cream shops, and there is a large variety of them. The portions are large and filling- even a small cup is packed densely with the ice cream. I usually opt for a vanilla soft serve with caramel sauce and crushed peanuts served in a waffle cone. The entire thing costs about 5-6$, which is reasonable and comparable to other shops. Ice cream is super creamy and rich. Staff is friendly and helpful and the store has a few small tables, for maybe about 10-15 people max. One of the better shops in the Rutgers area!

Clara S.

Yelp
Awesome awesome flavor options, but I personally liked my ice cream from sanctuary a few blocks down more. At thomas, I got the pumpkin, chocolate peanut butter, and cookie dough flavors. Scoops were not that big either.

Ruth S.

Yelp
My favorite ice cream parlor hands down. If the prices are up well everything is up. Not alot to pay for homemade premium natural custom made ice cream.Their yogurt is excellent too.The toppings are second to none. Try those wet walnuts.Nothing like them .What a giant size.Homemade whipped cream! Yum. Hard to find places like this one. Wonderful owners.Clean, fresh, and friendly. Can't beat them.

Avanti F.

Yelp
Really upsetting to see these chocolate covered strawberries are rotten. "Freshly made daily" doesnt seem true. Sadly she already ate one and then realized they were bad. Really disappointing to see such poor quality of such a highly rated place. Hope you check the strawberries that you call "fresh" more often.

Jessy T.

Yelp
My absolute favorite ice cream. I'm lactose intolerant and I will load up on lactose pills for this ice cream lol. They have Hot Nutella! You can't beat that!

Mitesh J.

Yelp
The ice cream was good, but there are better options, such as Applegate Farms in Montclair or Colonia Dairy Maid in Colonia. Thomas Sweets had a minimal selection, who was a major downfall. But, they make all the flavors in the house. Overall not a bad place but I would not come here especially.

Kimberly C.

Yelp
5 years later and I still love this place! As always, it's tricky to find parking, but it's worth it to get a delicious ice cream cone on a hot summer day! If ice cream isn't your thing, they have frozen yogurt, soft serve, and other sweets, treats, and toppings. There is plenty of seating when you want to enjoy your ice cream. I still love looking around the little gift shop. My favorite sweet is still the chocolate covered gummy bears. I like to see if they have any samples of fudge. Ahh, this is such a great place for a little indulgence and I'm hope they're around for more generations to enjoy.

Beth A.

Yelp
RIP OFF and cheap as heck! NO the prices aren't low...this place is stingy! They have to weigh each of their servings. WHAT?! I've never seen such a thing. How miserly does the owner have to be? Save your money as there are plenty of better ice cream options in the area. Boycott Thomas Sweet in New Brunswick! I felt robbed after trying this place for the first time. Never going here again! Yelp you need to start to allow negative stars because this place is just criminal. STAY AWAY! Btw their flavors aren't even acceptable. If it was cheaper than perhaps, but the prices here are detestable!

Kay Ashley M.

Yelp
Always a treat when you come in to eat sweets! The icecream flavors are delicious, especially for the banana barge, milkshakes, malt shakes or by themselves. I recommend the butterscotch wet topping and fresh strawberries, though they have a large array of wet and dry toppings. Next door, there's a cute little store that has some of the most pretty and delicious treats. They have balloons, stuffed animals, personalized chocolate sets, cards, baskets and gifts for graduations, birthdays, and year-round holidays. The fudge behind the glass counter is absolutely creamy and will melt in your mouth. There's are so many rich, satisfying flavors from mocha, salted caramel, dulce de leche, and more! Another favorite treat are the gourmet, chocolate covered pretzels (some covered with M&Ms, sprinkles, etc). These make excellent treats for that special someone or even to treat yourself!

Morgan T.

Yelp
This is the best ice cream idea ever to come around. You pick your flavor of handmade ice cream and they blend in whatever treat you want. My personal favorite is Oreo ice cream with Oreos blended in and more Oreos on top. It makes the ice cream more chocolatey but not too chocolatey. OMG! What is it they say double your pleasure, double the fun? Well this is tripled the pleasure, triple the fun. And so many choices. Yummmm!

Sammy G.

Yelp
I love me some Thomas Sweets! Being a Rutgers student, it's like a ritual that you have to have gone here at least once in your college career. It's a great place. Homemade ice cream, so many different flavors and mix-ins! I love it. The flavors aren't always the same since it's whatever they make but they always have something that I want. It's perfect for families and groups of students. There are benches outside to sit on, on nice days, it's great. There is a good amount of seating and there are window seats that you can see outdoor, it's really nice. The fact that the chocolate store is right next door is pretty awesome too.
