Thompson & Co Salon - Iowa City

I went to Thompson & Co for the first time today. I was very nervous because I wanted to do a Pixie cut. Natalie was AMAZING, not only did she do a great job cutting my hair but she was very informative on walking me through the steps in styling my new look and letting me know what products work best with my type of hair. I couldn’t be happier! If I could give more than 5 stars I would !

I love coming to this salon, the energy is always high and the stylists are very friendly and talkative. I absolutely adore McKenna, she is so sweet and makes my experience super fun. She’s really good at understanding what kind of color I want and executes it beautifully.

Love this salon. I am traveling through the area and won’t be back home for a few months, so I was in desperate need of highlights. It is always scary to go to a new salon but I was so happy I found this place. Grace did such a great job! She was so sweet and welcoming. It is easy to see that she takes great care and pride in her work and it shows! My hair looks so good. If I’m ever in the area again, I will definitely be back!

I had the best time there! Grace was the one who did my hair and she killed it. She talked me through everything I liked and didn’t like and helped me decipher the differences in my inspo pics. She did an amazing job and was upfront about how my hair wasn’t taking some of the color but told me she would tone it and it quite literally turned out perfect! Grace is the girl!

If you're looking for a haircut, done by a highly skilled, friendly professional, give Thompson & Co a try. They do an equally great job on men's and women's hair, and their stylists are personable and efficient. I can personally recommend both Cecilia and Amanda - both have given me great haircuts.

I absolutely loved the way I was treated as a client when I had gone in for a hair cut! I asked for layered, trimmed and short hair. And I got exactly that! Very amazing experience I would absolutely come in again! I got $10 dollars off with it being my first time getting my hair cut there. It takes so long to get in with an appointment that each time I set one up something else comes up that is more important and I have to cancel not worth the hassle anymore .

Grace is new, but super amazing. I have long, thick, coarse hair and she colored it perfectly, cut it beautifully, and was super professional all the way, (and she is just a nice person). I am only here for the month attending Iowa writers, and she took me in as if I were going to be her regular client. Highly recommend her and this place. It's clean, service-oriented, and relaxing.

Condescending arrogance isn't how a business should deal with an unsatisfactory service Come get your hair cut here if you want to overpay for a service you didn't want, wait 45 minutes after scheduled appointment, and have the owner talk down to you when you express that this isn't what you asked for.

I had a great experience during my first appointment with Brandi at Thompson & Co. I decided to research a few new salons after finding out that my stylist (different location) was going to be moving. Without too much looking, I came across reviews from my fellow Yelpers of Thompson & Co., and felt really confident giving this place a try. When I arrived, I was offered a beverage and brought to a very homey seating area with couches, magazines, and cute decor. My stylist was finished with her previous client right on time, and came over and introduced herself. When we sat down to talk about what I was interested in, I felt like she genuinely listened to me, and asked a few follow up questions to clarify. I just wanted a trim to clean up the ends (my hair is pretty long) so nothing too extensive. Brandi did a great job walking me through the process, checking with me throughout the appointment, and was very kind and personable. She also respected my preference to keep my hair pretty long since I have a few weddings coming up, and I was totally happy with my haircut! I really enjoyed getting to know her, and I'm looking forward to my next appointment for a Bayalage in a few months. PS - they are open on Sundays!

I've had my hair cut here twice and had great experiences both times! The first time, I came in hoping to donate my hair. They are partnered with the Children with Hair Loss Foundation and made it super easy for me, they did all the work! The second time I got a trim with Delila. I let the stylists do what they thought was best for layering and they did a great job giving my very straight hair some lightness and volume. Even during COVID times, they took their time with the wash (my favorite part) and cut. It is a little on the pricier side, but well worth it.

When I was new to the eastern IA area, having moved from Chicago, I searched high and low for a hair stylist / parlor that was a good fit. After what seemed to be a relentless search, I finally found Thompson & Co and have been extremely happy with their services and style ever since! First off, the instant you walk in the door, they are extremely accommodating and offer you a drink (water, coffee, beer, wine, etc.) and a comfortable place to sit while you wait for your appointment. As for my appointments, I do not necessarily just always go to the same stylist, as I have had equally good experiences with all of them to-date. It is also easier to schedule on the fly that way :) The stylists are very attentive listeners and do not make you feel bad if you continue to have suggestions until they get your haircut and style just right. They are also good about offering styling suggestions, but do not necessarily try and push their products on you. The other thing that is cool about their stylists, is the parlor not only encourages continued education, more over the parlor brings in other stylist from around the nation and maybe even world to teach them and provide new tips and tricks. I think that is just awesome, and worth supporting. Meanwhile, the environment is comfortable and cool the whole time. I honestly do not have any things to say where I think they need improvement at this time. So, if you are looking for an excellent stylist / parlor that you would think you could only find in a big city, check out Thompson and Co, and I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Thompson & Co is the place for a mens haircut in IC. I will never go anywhere else for a haircut if I don't need to. Riley and Kristen there know what they're doing. Only one trip to Panchero's more expensive than a Sport Clips haircut.

Riley has done a wonderful job styling my hair for 3 years. Highly recommend going to her!

I had my hair cut at this place probably 6 to 8 times, and brought my kids in for cuts too. The staff are friendly and I know many of them are skilled at their jobs. But from there, the service is inconsistent and not always organized (e.g., they failed to add my appointment to their calendar, but I rearranged mine for the appointment). The salon, from my opinion, is tailored to the teenage plus college crowd and not for working adults. The last time I was there the salon had an atmosphere like a downtown bar and certain staff were seemingly more focused on that activity and not the clients. Not my vibe. I know good minds can disagree about that. So now I go elsewhere.

I got an American Wave here and I love it!! Natalie was able to do just what I wanted with experience and expertise. I haven't felt this good about my hair in a long time. Thank you!

Since everyone is giving this place 5 stars, I was not going to give my 2 cents. But, It has been 2 weeks since I left Iowa for good, and 3 weeks since I had my last cut from Shelby and now desperately need a another cut, I can't not help but to give this place and Shelby my sincere commendation. My buddy and I got cuts from there for one and a half years. Place is clean, great scent when u walk in. Shelby takes great care of the hair, never hurried, I liked every single cut. The appointment system is fantastic, they always asked booking of next appointment after each cut, also someone always called me one business day ahead of appointments. ( I hate missing my hair appointments) I am sure there are many other good hair places in Iowa city, but for dudes, you will not regret coming here.

Four month after they destroyed my hair with hydrogen peroxide they paid for the correction at my old salon. I appreciate them paying $120 for the initial correction. However, I've still paid over $300 in monthly visits to my old salon to cover up the hideous orange streak on the top of my head. This is not a salon you should ever go to if you're looking to get your hair glossed or colored.

I went about 3 years without getting a cut, so I was honestly a little nervous the first time I came in to Thompson and Co. Needless to say ever since walking through the doors they've been nothing but amazing! My most recent appointment was with Jessica and within hours I was getting more compliments than I can count on it. Highly recommend Thompson and Co to everyone!

For the last two years, I have gone someplace else, but I hadn't booked an appointment there and needed a haircut now. This place is very nice and there was a lot of energy. I was very worried that the new stylist wouldn't do a very good job. After she got done it looked very good, but I had to wait to see what my wife and daughters thought. They loved the haircut and thought it was much better than before. I will be scheduling my next appointment there.

Best best BEST salon around, and it's walkable from downtown. I see Ashton, and she has completely transformed my hair. I even trusted her enough to dye my hair for the first time (pink, no less)! It's a popular place, so you often have to make appointments quite far in advance, especially if you want a cut or style around popular times like May or December. However, I've never had a problem squeezing in, and the prices are totally reasonable for the quality of service and haircut. Plus, the salon space is absolutely gorgeous--I always forget I'm in Iowa and not some ritzy big city when I'm there! Oh, and if you take a pic of their products, you get $5 off your next cut. I just wish they did free bang trims with the stylists, but that certainly isn't enough to keep me away from the salon.

Jessica does balayage for me and never disappoints! She is easy to talk to, listens to what you want before starting the appointment, and makes the experience fun. It is a bit pricey, but honestly worth it for the service and stellar job they do.

I've been going to Thompson & Co. now for more than two years and I've never been disappointed from the atmosphere, the people or most importantly my haircut. I personally get my haircut from the owner, Bobby, but everyone there are highly trained professionals who know how to take your expectations of your haircut and exceed beyond that. Everyone's hair is different and each and every one of the staff there knows what works best for you. If you are looking for a new place to get your haircut, enjoy great conversations all while feeling like family, Thompson & Co. is the place for you.

I got a haircut and wash from Jessica, and she was very knowledgeable and personable. She had a lot of knowledge about coloring hair and answered my many questions. Apparently new visitors get either a free deep condition or an eyebrow wax. I did the deep condition which smelled nice, though I didn't notice any change in my hair after. My only complaint is that I was told on the phone the cut would be 30 or 35 dollars, and I think he meant with no wash, but I wasn't provided that option in the salon and it ended being 45 plus tip. I think I imagined because she said the treatment was free that they wouldn't charge extra for the wash or they would at least give me the option to forego the wash, considering I had washed my hair in the morning anyway. Or if they need to wash all hair before cutting it then maybe it would be best if they could include that price when quoting someone instead of something else. Besides the price mixup, it was a good experience. Update- they got in touch about misquoting me and are planning to refund my card. Great customer service!

This place is great, very clean, very comfortable, and affordable on college student budget. It was about a 5 minute walk from downtown and I was able to walk in, get a cut, a shampoo, and have a chat with the owners, all in about 40 minutes. My hair was cut by Kayla, an Iowa native, who co-owns the salon with her husband Billy, an alumni of the University of Iowa. Both people were so nice and welcoming to me. Kayla did a great job with my hair, she was receptive to how I wanted it done and very efficient. Billy chatted with me while Kayla was cutting and was polite and friendly. Thompson is hip, has a great atmosphere, friendly, and gets you great service for the price range. I highly recommend it.

Bobby is amazing. Staff is always welcoming. Simply stated, you pay for what you get. If you want a great men's cut try Thompson & Co.

My go-to salon if I'm not home home. Natalie and Ashton are the girls who've done my hair. They've always done a great job. Ashton is really good at cutting men's hair. She's the only one I trust cutting my boyfriend's hair. This salon knows their stuff and keeps up with the current hair trends such as balayage.

I came here to donate my locks and Natalie was great! She told me they donate to a foundation that provides wigs completely free to kids with alopecia (unlike other organizations which charge for their wigs). Natalie chopped off 14 inches and gave me a great angled bob and gave me some styling tips as well. The cost was exactly what I'd expect (around $45) and TOTALLY worth it!

I love my hair! I moved from Texas recently and had my hair cut by the same stylist for 13 years, so I was super nervous having someone new cut my hair. Shelby explained what cut she thought would be best after I showed her a picture and discussed what I want it to look like eventually. She was very professional, but also friendly and talked to me the whole time. I scheduled my next appt when I checked out and I can't wait. My husband also gets his haircut here by Jessica and he's been 4 times already and likes his cut each time! I almost forgot they offer free brow waxing (not sure if it's with every cut or just because it was my first visit) and my eyebrows look great. I've always done threading in the past, but it was fast and painless! Definitely will have them done here from now on.

My need cut was much shorter than I wanted. I made it very clear what I wanted my hair to look like and she choose to do her own idea. The salon wasn't overly clean either. Disappointed based on the other reviews.

I was very impressed upon walking in. They have parking in back which is always a plus since parking can be a bear down town. I called on a Monday and got in on the Wednesday before Christmas (impressive). My stylist was very knowledgeable and went through all the color ideas for me. I was very comfortable with her, I explained what I wanted and she showed me what the process was to get there. I was very hesitant at first because she is young but it doesn't matter she did a great job! Shelby was very personable and knew what I wanted.....even though I didn't explain it very well:-) I will be going back and may bring my son they have a really nice barber area for men. Wish I knew about place sooner so I wouldn't of had to deal with hair I was unhappy about for so long!

One of my favorite places to go on Iowa City! I have been a customer since 2016 and was recommended by a friend to go. While expensive, yes, it is well worth the price. Every employee is kind and invested in giving you a great experience. I have seen multiple hair stylists throughout my time at Thompson and Co and I'm always satisfied with their hospitality and their work!! I recently had a miscommunication with my hair stylist and my hair was colored darker than I had expected it to be. I explained my problem with the manager and he was extremely understanding and accommodating. Talk about amazing customer service! My hair was re-colored, no questions asked. I love it here!

I went to Ally and I could not have had a better experience. I went in for a balayage, and it was the BEST I have ever had. She listened to me very intently, I had a lot to say because I haven't felt confident with my hair for a long time. She explained to me step by step how we were going to fix my hair. I felt like I could trust her from the second we started to chat. I am going to recommend this salon to everyone I can!

Great places with amazing service and people... but the price was just too high for my college student budget. I am confused why it says "moderate" pricing as that is very decieving. I went in for a touch up of my balayage and a simple cut and Ashton did a wonderful job but the price point of nearly 200$ was a big shocker.

I'm truly glad I took a chance and got my haircut here. I'm very, very picky when it comes to my haircut and I had my fair share of bad haircuts but Ashton (the stylist) listen to me really well and knew exactly what I wanted. She gave me one of the best fades I have ever gotten! She also made me feel really comfortable and made me forget it was her first time cutting my hair. I'll be coming back to her every time! No doubt about it.

I have lived in "bigish" cities in Ohio and never felt paying for a stylist was worth it. Until one day I needed a haircut super fast and just made an apt with what was nearest. That was the first time I has Paul cut my hair and I have followed him from Buzz to here. He's great, and the salon is cool too. Laid back and chill. Was never a product guy either by Paul walked me through what to use and they have some nice stuff that has lasted a while for me.

Brandi was the best! The place itself is very chill and laid back and the front desk woman was very kind. Brandi will pay attention to exactly what you are going for and provides a fresh cut! Definitely check this place out!

I needed a haircut desperately and wow, they sure exceeded my expectations! Even without an appointment they let me in. They offer you drinks and are very welcoming. My stylist, Ashton, was super nice and easy to keep a conversation with. Not only did she cut my hair perfectly but she also gave me styling advice. It may be a little pricey but it's definitely worth it. I'll be coming back for sure!

Today, I absolutely love my hair even tho I never would've dreamt it up on my own! I went in wanting a balayage for my entire head and that's not what I came out with. I was just surprised at the end, because I felt my hairdresser hadn't been clear about what he was doing to my hair. I told my hairdresser I was open to anything without knowing what I was getting into. I was so shocked at the end; I hated it and cried. The owner kindly discounted my costs. I started liking my hair after about a week and now I'm glad we just kinda went for it.

Excellent environment and clean energy. Products they use are offered for sale. The reason why I'm posting is because of Shelby who is genius!

Hands down the best haircut I've had at a surprisingly reasonable cost. The owner, Bobby, is one of the realist guys I've met and knows more about the physics of hair than I even knew existed. He seems to know everyone by name and is a great guy to talk to. The first time I walked in I told him to do whatever he wanted and make it work and he surpassed my expectations tenfold, this dude is a legend. Aside from the talented stylists they create, the atmosphere is second to none; they cultivate an almost effortless cross of modern and homey. I can't endorse this place enough. 10/10 I recommend this place to everyone I know

I love going to Thompson & Co, the entire staff is amazing and I have so much fun just going to the salon. Paul is my stylist and I do not have enough nice things to say about him as a person or as a stylist. I live about an hour and half from Iowa City and it is so well worth the drive because I know my hair cut or a color will be the best. Paul gives such a great cut that I don't need to go so often for trims. I highly recommend Paul and the salon. Their both great!! I heart Paul :-)

Amanda did a fantastic job with my hair. She exceeded my expectations and really listrcccened to what I wanted even when I wasn't totally sure how to color it. She made great suggestions and executed it well and I won't be going anywhere else while I live in Iowa.
