Best apple orchard EVER!!!!! Friendliest staff, very personable. It is pretty early in the season so lots of fresh yummy apples :)! And the apple cider donuts!?!? Are you kidding???? Best donuts of my life. Pick your apples here! You won’t regret it!

Google
A clean, well cared for orchard. The apples are delicious. Cute pumpkin patch with pre-picked pumpkins. The store has yummy baked goods (turnovers, cream horns, etc), they offer baked pies and whoopie pies sometimes, have apple cider in various sizes available for purchase, and the BEST apple cider donuts around. Parking is easy with the extra grass lot out front. There was live music by the picnic tables under the tent. They also keep their Facebook page updated regularly which is so nice for events and planning. It's a family favorite for sure!

We came for the apple cider donuts and we were not disappointed. The donuts were made almost to the order, very fresh, still warm when we got them. The donuts were delicious! They sell other baked good as well as coffee, honey and jam. Obviously they have apples that you can pick yourself too.

Only reason this isn’t 5 stars is because 1. There need to be better signage for everything (apples to pick, where to go, etc) 2. There needs to be a place to checkout for just apples and another for the donuts + other goods inside. The line is too long and people often have to shift around and wrangle their kids to avoid getting run over in the parking lot. This has been a problem for years and Thompsons doesn’t seem to want to do anything. With that said, overall it is a good deal for what you pay here. Not overly expensive but has a lot of what you’re looking for at an orchard. Donuts are great, good selection of baked goods, live music, outdoor seating.

Thompson's Orchard was a great experience! I'm writing this on behalf of the group at Creative Trails that came here today for a community outing. The Orchard is located on a beautiful piece of land and has a multitude of great trees for apple picking. The staff there is very welcoming and supportive; The owners son Eli was particularly generous with helping our group get accustomed to the orchard and the picking/paying processes. The community over at Creative Trails highly recommends coming here if you're interested in apple picking or just a nice fall place to visit in general!

Here’s an honest review. I base a lot of my decisions off google ratings and it’s only fair to share the good and the bad. The bottom line: I don’t think we’ll be back here in the future for Apple picking. The good: plenty of parking on the street, tasty homemade donuts and cider, open fields of Apple trees. The not so good: the whole checkout process (we stood in line for 45 minutes), the mapping of which trees are where, customer service. They only had two registers going for a busy Saturday. It had nothing to do with Covid protocols, they were indoors. When we visited other apple orchards, they had OUTSIDE tents with 4-5 registers going at a time, they had parking attendants helping you park, they had support personnel in the fields helping find particular trees and transporting elderly. I hate leaving a non stellar review, especially when it’s a family ran business, but it just wasn’t the best experience. PS: we don’t have kiddos so I didn’t comment on any kid friendly activities

We had such a fun time here! We rode a tractor, ate fresh blueberries, learned about Apple trees and listened to live music. It was an unforgettable experience. All the workers were extremely nice and knowledgeable. We love this place and can't wait to come back during fall!

Google
The place was very nice and cosy, the staff were lovely and the donuts and apple cider is out of this world. Plus they have the cutest handmade gift section. THE BEST EXPERIENCE

Yelp
Awesome family-owned business in New Gloucester selling annuals, perennials, baked goods and gelato and sorbet made in-house. In the Fall you can go apple picking.

Yelp
This family owned business has been a lifesaver during the COVID-19 #stayhome times. Mike Thompson - you're my hero! Amazing baked goods includes their signature doughnuts, but also cream horns, whoppie pies, and delicious pies like strawberry rhubarb and chocolate cream. They also have staples such as TP, butter, flour, yeast, and eggs, which certainly helped out when those things weren't, and in some cases still aren't, available at local grocers. They have also extended their inventory to include deli meats and cheeses, and meats for grilling. Check out their Facebook page for more details and make the trip. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
There is not a better selection of cut trees and reasonable pricing than at Thompsons. On top of that, they offer to help load and tie it down after they cut the bottom and branches if you want. Their cider and donuts are also to die for.

Yelp
Just dropped by to grab some donuts. We will be coming back to pick apples this weekend, because this place is BEAUTIFUL!!!'

Yelp
What a fun day. This is a great apple picking orchard. It's my favorite in Maine. It's an easy location to go to from Portland. The orchard has tons of apples and varieties. In addition, they have donuts and pastries, jammies and jellies, other stuff to buy including pizza. For kids on the weekends, there's a bunch of things going on. It's really great. And the apples are the best.

Victoria B.

Yelp
We love picking apples at Thompson's! They also sell amazing donuts and cider among many other items in their shop!

Lindsey B.

Yelp
They usually have 5 different apple types you can choose from throughout the orchard. Plan on being there for a minimum of 30 minutes for apple picking. You do have to walk through the orchard so also bring sneakers and not flip flops! Make sure you try their doughnuts and apple cider. It's made fresh everyday!

Yelp
I went to Thompson's Orchard this weekend and we left without picking any apples. The people at the Orchard we quite rude. I called and asked if I could bring my dog as other orchards allow it. Here is an article detailing it: https://www.bringfido.com/blog/take-your-dog-apple-picking/ I was told Federal Law prohibits bringing my dog apple picking. I have no problem if you don't want dogs in your orchard, but just say you don't want dogs in your orchard. Thompson's also requires reusable bags. I am all for it but they do not tell you this when you call or on their facebook page. They sell very small reusable bags for three dollars how convient for them. I would try Wallingford's in Aubrn they are very nice and go out of their way make you feel welcome.

Yelp
Solid apple orchard for picking and frolicking. While they don't have a corn maze or other activities, they do have plenty of apples, lots of space to run around in, apple cider for sale and of course Apple cider donuts available! Plenty of street parking, and a solid four-star experience.

Yelp
Thompson's is a lovely orchard set just outside of Portland. The drive out in the autumn is beautiful and totally worth it. It can get INSANELY busy on the weekends with families, so take that into consideration. However, that IS when they have the majority of their delicious appley sweet treats. If that doesn't matter to you, and you prefer a quieter experience (and are lucky enough to be able to do so), then week days are just as wonderful. Hot cider in hand (two for $3; gotta love those just-outside-of-Portland-prices), we wandered through the orchard on a Monday afternoon with no one else around us. We picked just a few pounds of Macs and Cortlands to go home and make apple crisp with. The leftover apples just for eating, my boyfriend swears were the best he's ever had in his life. I have to agree - the apple I ate while picking (sorry about that, Thompson's!, I promise it was only one) was so crisp and juicy and flavorful - unlike anything I had had in a long time. We spent a few minutes warming up inside at Thompson's because it was bitter cold when we were there. It was really pleasant - there were some octogenarians sitting in rockers around the wood stove chatting while a teenage girl with her headphones in made donuts in the bakery. Just a really charming juxtaposition. The vintage stuff they have throughout the inside wooden structure is really fascinating stuff, so if you're into that sort of thing, definitely make it a point to look through it all! Finally, the baked goods were so delicious looking it was almost unbearable. From apple cream puff pastries to raspberry turnovers, from a variety of cupcakes to the most enormous and gooey looking chocolate-sea salt-caramel brownies in the world... they definitely have a variety of options for very palette. When we were there they had just two donut types for sale: chocolate and plain. Unfortunately, the plain donuts are literally just that... plain (vanilla), not apple cider flavored. So we decided to forgo getting anything. But don't let that stop you from getting in on all that wonderfulness!

Yelp
Had the best fresh donuts that I have ever tasted! The apple picking was fun and easy with a great selection! Parking was easy! Also bought a big pumpkin from them that was beautiful! Must try donuts!!

Yelp
To be fair, I stopped in at Thompson's very late in the season. There were only Macs and Cortlands available for picking and I was looking for Honey Crisp. I called ahead and they said they had a bin of pre-picked honey crisp, and with that information, I left my house in Portland. Once I got there, there was still a pretty long line waiting to pay/get donuts. I looked around on my own and found a wooden bin of honey crisps. They were all pretty old with wrinkly skin and some rot parts. Even so, I picked through to find a few good ones and got in line. I waited in line for about 20 minutes, got to the register and was charged $8.25 for 4 apples! I asked if that price was right and the women behind the register seemed flustered AND irritated by my question. She told me that yes, $8.25 for 4 old apples was the right price. I paid, got back in my car, and headed back to Portland. I am a big fan and supporter of local businesses. At Thompson's there was a weird vibe that the customers were a cross to bear, as opposed to being the key to their success as a business. I would definitely recommend a re-think on their approach to the public.

Yelp
A great orchard and a great New Gloucester family. Honest and hardworking, they have a great bakery, wonderful gelato, tasty apples and lots of other things to occupy a young family during applepicking season. We love bringing a picnic then picking apples and gettting some of their wonerful donuts and cider. this is a dont miss.

Anna D.

Yelp
One of the best orchards I've EVER been to. The trip to New Gloucester is quick from Portland and beautiful (given the time of year and the stunning foliage). You pull into a decent sized parking lot, surrounded by rolling hills of beautifully manicured apple trees. I've NEVER seen this many trees at an apple orchard. The property itself is as amazing as any autumn, New England post card. Every year, apple picking is a necessary tradition. The bf knows that there will be no apple treats unless they're hand picked (teeeheee). I was incredibly pleased that we were able to buy pumpkins there as well! I'm a very efficient apple picker; I don't like picking around groups that I know have probably man-handled most of the fruit, so we headed straight to the untouched corners of the orchard. We walked away with about 15 lbs of Cortlands, McIntosh, & Red Delicious. I've never picked Red Delicious before! While waiting to pay, we perused the freezer with homemade apple cider popsicles, fudge, cookies, apple cider baked beans, and more yummy goodies beyond belief. We indulged in a couple bites of the apple cider donuts with apple drizzle.... mmmmm, mmmmm, good!

Melanie T.

Yelp
Lots of baked goods and other options inside the store. Donuts were delicious. Apple picking was fun- not a huge selection and was a bit difficult to figure out which trees were which apples (girl at register seemed unclear as well), but they are definitely doing COVID precautions correctly. I will come back again and again for that reason alone!

Yelp
Love this little hole in the wall, I think I get breakfast here about 3 times a week. I ordered the same thing every time and 8 out of 10 times they knock it out of the park, I wish they would work on their consistency of their portions but everything else is fantastic. P.s if you could cut the wrap before it's wrapped in the paper that'd be nice to.

Mike S.

Yelp
Great apples, great people, fun location! What a beautiful day for apple picking last year! I really enjoyed this orchard. Had a few different apples (no granny smiths, which are my favorite). The staff was friendly and the price was average. The orchard was decent size but not overly huge. I would recommend this for a family outing!!

Andrea T.

Yelp
Thompson's is another great place for apple picking! The orchards are gorgeous if you go on a day with blue skies! They were out of donuts the day we picked, but we took home cider along with our apples! It's a drive from Portland, but we enjoyed it!

E B.

Yelp
I really am not satisfied with the way they run this orchard anymore. The lady at the counter was quite rude (this experience happened in October) and blunt. The donuts this time around were a bit hard, I'm sorry to say. The orchard's apples were only a couple types and they were expensive. More donut flavors would be great, more attractions at the place (a playground, a corn maze, etc). I had a once good time at Thompson's but I certainly am sorry to say I will not be returning anytime soon.

Yelp
I went apple picking here yesterday and it was great! The staff were knowledgable and friendly. They had great donuts and cider. The other pastries looked great as well but I did not try them. Prices were also reasonable. Apples were $1.10 a pound. The only complaint I have is there were only courtland and Macintosh apples.
