After a long day of touring Charleston, we decided to dine in the lively Thoroughbred Club. We enjoyed our food choices very much and cocktails. It was fun watching the bartender whip up specialty drinks. Most of all, we appreciated the piano music playing at the bar. The pianist had quite the repertoire and that added to our overall experience.

Google
I really liked the upscale atmosphere, live music, and excellent drinks. Really excellent cocktails with upscale glasses, picks, napkins etc. a nice departure from the market street neighborhood. The food is very basic, with tasty options but little variety. Still, would recommend a visit here.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had an unforgettable experience at the Thoroughbred Club inside The Charleston Place, and it was all thanks to our amazing waitress, Karla. From the moment we sat down, she went above and beyond. She knew we wanted to share an entrée and had it beautifully plated on two separate dishes without us even asking (a small touch that made a big impact). But the highlight? Karla surprised us with a complimentary dessert to celebrate our anniversary, and it was genuinely one of the sweetest, most thoughtful gestures we’ve had while dining out. The atmosphere was elegant, the service was top-tier, piano played in the background, and Karla made us feel truly celebrated. She’s the kind of person who elevates the entire experience, warm, attentive, and totally on it. 10/10, highly recommend requesting her if you’re lucky enough to visit!

Google
Beautiful classic setting. Didn’t like the burnt bread and thought it should have come with butter. Cheese plate was just ok. I enjoyed my cocktail but didn’t love the others I tasted amongst the group.

Google
it doesn’t get much better than a little live piano music a top notch cocktail and some tasty bar snacks. Our server Genevieve was fantastic and had my drink made a little less sweet to my liking. This hotel is gorgeous at Christmas and everyone inside the bar was enjoying a fun holiday evening alongside us. If you can get a seat at the bar where you can chat with some of the friendly staff and fellow hotel guests

Google
The absolute best shrimp and Grits I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Perfect early dinner. Having lived and worked in Charleston for five years, I've tasted most everyone's shrimp and grits.

Google
I’ve been here a dozen times from staying at the hotel. Super awesome vibe, great drinks, tasty snacks. Last night I had the cinnamon plum tea and wow it was so delicious! The seating is cozy and sophisticated. The live pianist really elevates the ambiance. I had to remove a star because the waitstaff lately has been unfriendly. Not sure what the situation is, maybe understaffed and stressed out? A bit curt and unkind. Perhaps it will improve soon. Still a great place!

Google
Ella at the Thoroughbred Club was just lovely! She communicated clearly and kindly, making me feel welcome right from the start. Her attentiveness and warm demeanor truly enhanced my experience. I felt well taken care of the entire time. I genuinely enjoyed every moment. Highly recommend

Yelp
Stop in for a couple cocktails and they were delicious! It's a very nice spot and definitely great for a romantic date night. Our server was great and very welcoming! Didn't try any of the food but would go back.

Yelp
We wandered into the elegant mall, and found the Thoroughbred Club, and it was perfectly suited for what we wanted. We had just been to the Immersive Van Gogh/Monet show, and we're looking for a quiet, nice place to discuss it over a late lunch. We sat down to table linens, professional service, and the lilting notes of the harpist wafting in from the atrium as we pored over the menu, a perfect start. The menu featured several Low Country classics, like She Crab soup, and it was the best I've sampled, with lumps of backfin crabmeat in a wonderful bisque. I chose the Burrata cheese and beet salad, my friend selected the turkey club; both were excellent examples of a good chef's magic. I highly recommend the Thoroughbred Club as an elegant oasis well worth your time.

Yelp
The Thoroughbred Club has lived rent free in my brain for years. While I've been to Charleston numerous times since my last visit I never walked into Charleston Place again until recently. I had forgotten the name of the restaurant and the hotel that housed it. I simply remembered how good it was. When I saw it again with a friend I was excited to return. Would it live up to the memory? I am glad to say it really did! We waited about ten minutes and then were seated near a piano player. Our server was a professional lady who was all polite business. She would check-in with us often throughout the night. As I was not overly hungry I opted for a bowl of their she-crab soup. My friend was impressed with the table side preparation as the bowl came out with the crab and then the soup poured over top. The soup was absolutely amazing. It was very rich and creamy. Every bite was delectableness. My friend ordered a club sandwich which was big enough to feed her a couple meals. The ambiance was elegant and calming. It was a great evening!

Yelp
Beautiful bar located in the Charleston Place hotel. We only had a drink but they were both top tier. Our bartender was very friendly and shared some interesting facts about the city.
google avatar

Terri T.

Yelp
GF Club sandwich was great! Was looking for jazz but had only a pianist. Waiting time was a little long.

Maria-Elena T.

Yelp
Girls weekend in Charleston and it was the night before it officially started and others arrived. Came here for a cocktail before dinner. I got their "Sweet Dreams" cocktail and it was perfect. Hugh was a great bartender. Atmosphere encouraged conversation and the three of us talked to a few others. Some were local, some visiting.

Yelp
This place is awesome. It has been spice we moved here decades ago. Ambiance can not be beat. Look up - the ceiling is a wonderful green. The woodwork is something you would want your den done with. Ask for Chris. What a pro. When was the last time a waitperson asked you your name and remembered it ? Great service. Maybe the best Manhattan in the low country. That's what originally caught us. She crab soup is a wonder. Don't skip it. Unless you are allergic and then by all means skip it. Turkey club was ok. Not amazing but ok. It's a turkey club. How magical is it going to be. The fries are not to be missed. I dunked them in my soup. Suspect the ketchup might be house made. Yum! Don't forget a desert cocktail. Not many places have them anymore. Don't forget your check book. It is in Charleston Place after all. Well done folks. Well done !

Yelp
We went for dessert at this classy and elegant restaurant located in The Charleston Place. The flaming crème brûlée was rich and creamy with carmelized sugar on top! Too notch service and an overall incredible experience. A bit pricey, but well worth it if you want to splurge and eat delicious food. I look forward to going back and trying the small plates.

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick drink. Staff was very professional helpful and sincere. Inside is beautifully decorated. I had the espresso martini which was awesome.

Yelp
Our multiple visits to Thoroughbred Club (it's the lobby bar of Charleston Place) demonstrated they have really good service - as I've come to expect in Charleston (service that would be notable in other cities). Drinks are fine; pricing is as-expected. Complimentary bar snacks (warm salted chile-garlic nuts) are better than expected. This is all good, right - so why the "OK" rating? The downside for me is that the design of the room has lots of different areas to sit comfortably, but nowhere really to hide away. If you're stuck sitting anywhere near a lout (we were, one time), you're going to suffer. The vibe is more "airport-cocktail-bar-waiting-on-your-flight" than "private club where you can relax and talk." Great service and bar snacks. Drinks are fine. Room is fine-ish. It's okay.

Yelp
Thoroughbred Club is a fantastic hotel bar in Charleston Place with musicians playing piano and the harp in the lobby. My friend and I had lunch here during the holidays. Excellent customer service! I had their Turkey Club sandwich with fries and it was so good! Sweet Tea was a little unsweet but they had extra sugar packets. Loved the Tabasco hot sauce mini bottles too! I will come back in the future.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
The atmosphere at The Thoroughbred Club is clubby, sophisticated and refined in keeping with the Charleston Place Hotel's upscale feel and over the top common areas. The living room lounge" feel is complete with live music. On any given day you will hear a harpist, a guitarist or a pianist. So take a seat, sit back and enjoy the well- traveled spirit selections. A great way to start or end an evening with the menu offerings ranging from lunch favorites to tapas and dessert selections. The service is attentive and professional. On my visit to The Thoroughbred Club recently it was so nice to take in all of the hotel's holiday decorations, trees and glitter throughout the main areas and it certainly helped to get into the holiday mood and foster that holiday spirit.

Yelp
A great girl's trip cocktail hour. Service was great. A needed break from shopping.

Yelp
We ended our long weekend here at Charleston Place in the beautiful hotel's Thoroughbred Club. Located opposite of the check-in desk this hotel. This bar has several cozy tables and is elegant with rich wood paneling. We entertained by an harpist playing in the lobby and later with someone playing the piano inside the bar area. Cocktails are expertly crafted. Was lucky enough they had a milk washed cocktail on the menu. If you've never had a milk washed cocktail order it. The milk clarifies the alcohol's impurities making it clear with a rich and fluffy texture. This one was a bourbon based punch and washed down easily. I also got the old fashion and it was a very generous pour. They also provide some bar snacks to munch on and we also opted to order some food to make it a meal. The gumbo was delicious and hit the spot. The tartare was fine but perhaps a little heavy on the Dijon mustard. Service was five star.

Yelp
Popped over here for a night cap. We were able to snag a table in the corner for 8 of us. This is inside the Charleston place and it had a cool old cigar lounge/casino vibe. Our server was nice and was accommodating to our large group. My drink was a strawberry milk punch, it was good and light, not super spirit forward. I definitely wanna come back and try more things.

Yelp
We went during the busy holiday season and promptly gave our name for a table. This highly anticipated stop is located in gorgeous Charleston Place. Our table was in the side room, which was fine. Bar area was absolutely packed. We ordered our drinks from an overworked server... and waited... and waited. We watched others who arrived after us get their cocktails and drinks. After quite some time, BF was able to inquire about our drinks. When they finally arrived, both were good. As others suggested, we decided to get appys which looked delicious. These were slow to arrive and were placed at someone else's table, prior to being scooped up, moved behind us, and served to us... Shishito peppers were bland, and wings were average, but lacking in flavor. My salad was good. We were going to order a couple more items, but server was curt and irritable, as well as food being mediocre. Instead, we paid our check and went elsewhere. I know that places are short staffed, but between the attitude of our server, our food being placed at the wrong table, and mediocre food, it was a disappointing visit.
google avatar

Iz S.

Yelp
Very classy and professional environment. Live harp music and great drinks! We didn't order food!

Michael I.

Yelp
Oh. My. Goodness. It was 100 degrees outside and we needed a break. Thank goodness we were able to walk right in and get a table. (The day prior we couldn't get a table). All was made better by our server Chris. I feel calling Chris a server doesn't do him justice. I felt like we were friends by the end of the meal. The turkey Club is absolutely amazing. My wife had a salad with chicken that she also loved. And wait for it...the Crème Brûlée is an absolute must have. If this lobby bar is any indication, we resolved to stay at this hotel next time we are in Charleston.

Yelp
Fun spot to play tourist in your own town! We swung by after a dinner downtown for another glass of wine and settled in for excellent service and good people watching. Our waitress was stellar and kind as were the food runners and hostesses. It does get busier as the night goes on and was full in January so in high season may be tougher to get into. They deliver snacks to each table as you sit down (cheese straws, benne wafers and mixed nuts). We also ordered fries which weren't great for the price but that didn't take away from the overall experience. Our wine was excellent!
google avatar

Liz G.

Yelp
This is the spot to stop in if you're out and about shopping downtown Charleston! Don't be turned off if you see a line. They will take your name and text you when your table is ready. Perfect to get a little shopping in while you wait. We stopped in for an afternoon cocktail and were pleased to also be served some complimentary mixed nuts, cheese straws, and Benne wafers. Great cocktail menu and decent wine selection. Most of the time there is someone playing some musical instrument which is a nice addition to the ambiance Thoroughbred offers. We had a very attentive waiter this past visit. Considering if was the week between Christmas and NY, I was happy to have such great service. Look forward to a return visit in the Spring.

Yelp
Although we had planned on going to another place for our last dinner in Charleston, we decided to stay here instead after being so impressed with the atmosphere and the amazing service from the truly dedicated staff. The dark wood paneling and the horse related memorabilia were stunning and gives this place its club feel. Our server Kimberly was an absolute gem whose dedication to her customers was phenomenal. We're so happy that we decided to spend our last night here at this wonderful place. And the icing on the cake was the being treated to the lovely music played by a harpist.

Alexis J.

Yelp
Incredible drinks, ambiance & bar tenders!! The vibe is elevated yet relaxed. We stayed at The Charlston Place and the Thoroughbred Club caught our eye as soon as we arrived! During our last night at the hotel we stopped by for a drink. The bartenders were so kind and easy going, the drinks were delicious, and the bar snacks were the cherry on top! The glassware is incredible. It's heavy and feels luxurious - a true cocktail lover knows the glassware is important because it makes the drink taste that much better! They let us bring our drinks to our room, and even gave us a to-go cup for our snacks. We absolutely adore everything about The Charlston Place and can't wait to come back!

Yelp
What a beautiful hotel lobby bar with piano music playing in the background and spectacular cocktails and small plates. At Christmastime it is just magical inside with a large train running around a miniature town and festive trees, tastefully lit and decorated all through the entire lobby. On the quest for the best she-crab soup in Charleston, this place wins. It was a bowl of generous lump crab, over which our server poured the flavorful broth right on top, leaving the crab meat as sort of a hidden treasure. That concoction was topped with sherry and we polished it off just like that. I wanted to lick the bowl. We also had the cheese and fruit plate. I had a strong bourbon cocktail that was perfectly mixed. It is stunningly beautiful in the lobby of the Belmond and I have already recommended this place to friends and family. I can't wait to go back.

Leslie B.

Yelp
The bar is great, if you can get in. They put people at the front who make you wait because they have a waiting list. Who has a waiting list for a bar?? We have gone to this bar for 40 years, but fortunately, not the only bar in town and since we can't ger into the bar we will no longer recommend people stay at Chaeston Place.
google avatar

Jillian G.

Yelp
Everyone's favorite spot around 2:00pm on a Saturday. It's a great location to kill time in a lovely dark restaurant. The food is excellent, and the waiters are friendly, but the service would be better before the rush.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
I love a good fancy hotel bar and this one fits the bill. It's a very refined space with a big central bar and several tables, both tucked away inside the space and spilling out into the marbled hotel lobby. The Club is located just off the famous big staircase in the Charleston Place lobby, but feels like an oasis once you're inside. I had both lunch and pre-dinner cocktails when I was here and loved both. The shrimp cocktail was eight big shrimp, paired in four little "shrimp 69s" with a lovely cocktail sauce. The she-crab soup was rich with lots of lump crab, plus they offer you added sherry when they serve it. Tried a couple of the house cocktails and they were well-made and sizeable. Pre-dinner highballs were also a good size. The staff is all ultra-professional and welcoming. This is one of the major amenities of the lovely Belmond Charleston Place hotel.
google avatar

TC L.

Yelp
Love the dim lit ambiance of this bar. The service is impeccable. The drink selection is grand. Stop in and enjoy, it's worth it!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick bite and relax time just because it's a lounge and we've walked a lot that day.. a lounge with good food and great ambiance ! We ended up ordering a lot, even thou we had dinner reservations that evening , just because everything looked soo good on the menu and it didn't disappoint!! Had the Caesar's salad, lobster Mac and cheese , the cheese board, wings and boys had the burger .. everyone in our party loved it and the drinks were really good too
google avatar

Heidi M.

Yelp
My husband and I have seen this place several times and always wanted to stop so on our anniversary we popped in to have a wonderful cocktail. Piano player was amazing and so was our server. Will be back soon to enjoy!

Yelp
If you are in search of a cozy relaxing space to go for an afternoon drink down town, The Thoroughbred Bar is the perfect place. Located within the Charleston Place block, it's vibrant fun & oh so festive. Grab a table & voila exceptional table service with a broad range of cocktails and coffee. Sit relax and enjoy the people watching. It's a place where you can easily drop in alone and not feel out of place. They have perfect pitch piano music, not too loud, making conversation a breeze. It's a little pricey but once in a while that's just fine , especially when you want to get out of the rat race of shopping and crowds. It's also an ideal spot when arranging to meet someone that you haven't had the chance to catch up with for a while.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in town! The Thoroughbred captures vintage Charleston charm with its decor and atmosphere . Classic and upscale, the ambiance is enhanced through dim lighting , a beautiful mahogany bar and plush leather chairs and couches. Sit back and sip on one of their signature cocktails while enjoying the live pianist or guitarist. My favorite is the Chantilly - raspberry vodka with a mix of cranberry , pineapple , citrus and orange liquor. They offer a diverse tapas menu but keep in mind the food is prepared differently than what you would receive if you ordered the same thing at the hotel's restaurant, the Charleston Grill. I found this out when I ordered the bar's crabcakes- they're good, but the restaurant's version is another level amazing! The bar also offers a small tray of nuts that you will want to snack on . This is a great place for pre or post dinner cocktails, people watching and live music . I always love going here ! PS: Enjoy the complimentary valet parking at the hotel but be sure to tip the attendant.
google avatar

Anne P.

Yelp
Thoroughbred Club is a nice hotel bar with a piano man but nothing too loud. Great conversation spot. Great drinks great service and the coffee was amazing!
google avatar

Kim F.

Yelp
Always elegant and always great. Bartenders are great and wine is wonderful. If you are looking for casual elegance, with a piano bar you have it here!

Jen D.

Yelp
We had high tea at the club and it was fabulous - we had it with a glass of champagne - the tea was fantastic - it was coconut tea which I never had before and it was amazing - the tea service was great too - she was so knowledgeable about the teas and how we could pick the right one - a very luxurious mid day treat that shouldn't be missed.
google avatar

Yelp
My cousin and I came in here for cocktails twice during our trip to Charleston. It's located in the Charleston Place Hotel. The staff were very welcoming and service was great. The drink menu is decent and they have a great wine selection. They have a food menu but we just went for cocktails. Would come again.

G A.

Yelp
Staying at the hotel. Walked out without being served after the waiter dropped napkins at the table and asked how everything was so far. Told him we just sat down and he said ok and then disappeared. Went out for lunch instead of using the credit we had after that kind of service.
google avatar

Marqus R.

Yelp
I was in the Thorough Bred Lounge which is the bar and light snack of tapas service area of the Thoroughbred Club located inside the Belmond Charleston Place. As lounges go, it's about as elegant as bars or drinking lounges can get. It exudes classic cocktail lounge atmosphere in every detail. I found it really great to come across a classic upscale cocktail lounge and this is one of the better of them. Their cocktail list is every changing but always one of the best you can find with approximately 15 selection of light and dark cocktails. I had their Pink Hummingbird which consisted of St. Germain, sparkling rose and Campari. I've had them before at Old Pink in Savannah but theirs was basically only St. Germain and Champagne. I think the light touch of Campari added an extra finish, so I preferred it. But no matter what drink you may order you can count on it being expertly crafted. They also have an excellent choice of tapas. I started with their Lobster Roll which I found so good I even then had to try their Fried Oysters which was also excellent as it was totally unique as it came with a delightful wasabi, grated parm and a spinach cream. As far as bars and cocktail lounges go, you can't go wrong with the Thoroughbred.

Randall D.

Yelp
This was great! Guitar player from Russia was a virtuoso and highly informed of various types of music. Also, one of the best Old Fashions ever from the bar. Looking forward to returning.
google avatar

Carla B.

Yelp
Place used to be great - too bad upper management ruined it. Been awhile since I've been in but it used to have great food and drinks. It's a shame all the staff quit and left bc of lack of help. Maybe stop worrying about purple couches and ugly chandeliers and take care of the people who run the business for you. Just a thought. Oh and if you're looking for the best drink on the menu it is definitely the Infield - refreshing and delish - most unlike the crowd that's going to swallow you since this hotel wants to pack it full to the brim every single night
google avatar

Dunn F.

Yelp
Such a great experience there this weekend. Christmas is especially beautiful and the pianists are always so talented and find the right volume level. The vibe is always "we are here to have a good time." We didn't eat this time, but a very varied menu will leave no one disappointed. The drinks are great. Martinis are my fave. Libby was our waitress and she was wonderful!
google avatar

Ken K.

Yelp
Great bar with great service! The red wine was tasty. Get the she crab. The wine list is great. The location is perfect in Charleston Club. The atmosphere is excellent at the Thoroughbred Club! I look forward to my next visit. The bartender was excellent!
google avatar

Deanne G.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel bar. Bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable. Inside decor reminds me of an old steakhouse. There is a pianist playing outside the bar, which added to the ambiance.
google avatar

Sandy R.

Yelp
Stopped here apps and drinks. Order a veggie pizza (that was not on the menu) and a red sangria. The pizza was probably 12" round and included peppers, black okives and mushrooms. It was ok in taste. The red sangria was a large portion and served with several slices of fresh fruit. It was flavorful and refreshing. Good food, great drinks but even better was the great personality of our server, Daryl. He made our visit fun, pleasurable and so enjoyable. Just a sweet guy who loves his people and takes pride in his job!

Yelp
Nice bar with great service. Good alcohol selection. Pricy, but look where you are.

Yelp
10+ years ago a group of us started a Christmas time tradition of cocktails at the Thoroughbred Club. Before getting inside the bar the hotel lobby is beautifully decorated and totally helps get you into the spirit. (Even when it's 75 degrees outside!) I haven't been able to go every year since I'm normally in IL, but all the years I've gone we've sat at the couches closest to the piano player. This year, our group of 20+ was able to sit in the whole new area outside of the club. It was completed about 2 months ago and has two large couches and 5 other table with chairs. It took away the additional entrance, but added so much more space and seating for the club. Just like any place you've frequented year after year you'll notice that the prices have gone up. The trio of tapas is now $36 and all specialty cocktails are $15. The prosecco I was drinking cost me by the glass what I could get an entire bottle for. But hey, this night is all about a group of friends that love each other and have a fantastic tradition, in a beautiful setting, in our wonderful city.
google avatar

Julie A.

Yelp
Friendly bar located in the lobby of the Charleston Place hotel. Bartenders friendly. Host welcoming. If there are no seats at the bar, you can grab a drink and take it to the lounge area. A definite late night stop if you are staying at the hotel.
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
Had some cocktails at the Thoroughbred Club. It was so delightful. Darell was a lot of the reason we had such a good time. A true professional whom you could tell loves his job. We have always enjoyed having cocktails here but will definitely be back more often to see Darell's smiling face. Good on you Charleston Place for hiring this gem!

Yelp
One of my favorite bars downtown with its elegance and comfort. The live piano music is refreshing. The view of the beautiful lobby serves as a great backdrop. The menu is small but everything I've had has been fantastic. If you're looking for cozy, the seating here are comfortable club chairs around cocktail tables are perfect to relax and unwind by yourself or with friends. It's also a perfect stop for date night. The staff here is friendly and delivers quality service you'd expect from an upscale establishment.

Yelp
Great hidden gem in DWTN Charleston.. good food and good drinks.. staff is very friendly and hospitable.. went there several times during my stay.. Ebby the bartender was quick with service..
