On the Grid : Quay Coffee

"One of my favorite things to do in KC is slow down with a pour over coffee and then wander down to the river and get inspired by the view. The best place to start the process is at quay (pronounced “key”), the best place in the area to get a caffeinated brew. their attention to detail in brewing is pretty stellar and their offering is some of the best coffees around. If you’re one that admires a good beard you’ll most likely see a few." - Contrabrand

On the Grid : Thou Mayest coffee house

"Started in a garage by a coffee roasting gang of freewheeling renegades, Thou Mayest has become a community hub thanks to its beautifully distinctive space and vast array of tasty beverages. Come for a coffee in the morning or a beer in the afternoon, cozy up in a corner with a book or commune with friends on the back patio, either way you can’t lose." - Brent Anderson

This place is a hidden gem. Excellent drinks no matter what time of the day and plenty of options for a bite to eat even if you just want cereal. The coffee is amazing. They have excellent options for seating (couches, lounge chairs or booths) but you still can sit at the bar or tables to get work done. The staff is so friendly every time and really takes pride in their craft (excellent coffee).

Google
Atmosphere is awesome. I absolutely love how the place is put together and decorated. I also love the cereal bowl option! So fun! The coffee however needs a lot of improvement. The bean tastes bitter and burnt mixed with over sweet syrup. I can’t tell if my Latte is too bitter or too sweet because I’m getting both at the same time, unfortunately. Better than Starbucks but not the best small coffee shop coffee.

its a beer life

Google
What a hidden gem just west of the city market. A craft coffee shop with the hippest vibe in KC. An amazing choice of craft coffees and drinks. Take a break and sip some happiness while chatting with your bestie or catching up on the fat book you’ve been waiting to get back into all week. If you need some H2O they have both regular water and sparkling water on tap by the lid and cup area just around from the order counter. The decor alone here will keep you entertained for a significant amount of time. A cross between uncle jimmys get away cabin on the lake and a bite of metro KC. So many items here that bring back wonderful memories from times gone by Staff were attentive and very friendly. We felt welcomed from the moment we opened the doors. Take the time to get here and support this fantastic place. Will definitely return again and again.

Modest and moderately social experience. I ordered a delicious iced macchiato with lavender and almond milk. The customer service was phenomenal. I’ll definitely return to this location.

Google
Get a mocha , get charged for the flavor . Ask for an extra shot of espresso get questioned EVERY.SINGLE.TIME . Like it’s an absurd request . Large mocha latte with an extra shot ! $10 . A taste like dirt . Crazy that dirt can cost more than Starbucks for the exact same drink. And a large is literally only like 16 ounces maybe

Google
One of the coolest places to sit and have great conversations over a great caramel oat milk latte. Community seating makes for some wild and interesting conversations and has been a gem of a spot for locals to connect with people who love coffee and deep talks. Staff is incredibly diverse. Some introvert, some extrovert. Conversations at the bar with any of the staff members will show you why people love Kansas City and the Midwest feel you get once you break the ice with a stranger. Love this place.

Google
They could base a TV show around this place, it's so cool. I actually made the decision to move to KC/River Market after a stop here on a visit if that tells you anything. Such a great spot with different spaces and great coffee. And super friendly staff. Sold.

Google
This coffee shop was conveniently located in River Market which made it an easy walk from any other business in the area (also by streetcar). The actual shop had a sizable space when particularly on Labor Day, there was a lot of room for study and conversations which made the environment excellent. The menu items are of typical nature for coffee shops and prices are fair. Overall a wonderful study spot with access to Downtown KC.

Yelp
What a great coffee shop! Whether you want to get a cup to go, or sit and enjoy it in the cafe, the coffee and service are excellent! There is lots of seating, tables and booths, but also couches and chairs to enjoy a cup of coffee with friends. The coffee is always delicious and they have some sweet treats to try! They have way more than just your normal latte. They also are dog friendly so it's a great place to stop on a Saturday morning walk. We will be back to try some cocktails soon!

Yelp
Do I recommend this place? Well this was my first time here, and the coffee was pretty good. I enjoyed my mocha, which fortunately I requested that they make it half sweet. My husband, however, said that his hot chai was, "alright". Someone here recommended that I try the "pollinated lavender latte," which I will have to try next time. The next best part is that this place on a Saturday is opened until 11 PM, which is pretty cool. Too bad I can't get this in one of our many coffee shops in Lee's Summit. Oh well' Now for the minuses. The fact that this place is a bar and also a coffee shop contributes to the hectic busy atmosphere and noise level wherein the staff plus music pretty loud so that it's hard to hold a conversation here. Another fact is that speaking to others who come here frequently, they told me that they have actually waited here for long periods to actually get a table or a spot to sit with their laptop because others are doing the same and holding the spot they keep for a long time. I may find this place also neat to check out when it's warmer also because I felt a draft no matter where I was shopping, but I won't count on it because then it may be impossible to even find a spot. We waited 40 minutes for a table if that says anything.

Yelp
Relaxing and inviting ambiance. Perfect for a rainy day pick me up, getting some work done, or just enjoying a delicious drink. Great tea, coffee, and cocktail/NA options. Tons of cozy seating.

Yelp
If ambiance is what you are searching for when choosing a local coffee shop (with history to boot), then look no further than the artfully decorated and curated Thou Mayest. It is for a sure hipster atmosphere. However, this coffee aficionados dream is also cozy and home-like, and that is a good thing. The menu is pretty vast, but there is something for everyone, even someone like me who chooses to verge on the side of decaf. And if you're feeling to be more frisky and desire an alcoholic beverage there is a wide variety of those as well, it rivals the coffee side of the menu and multiple happy hours are offered per day. When I dropped in on Saturday morning with my mother, while waiting for Tribe kitchen to open, we were very impressed by both of our drinks. She went with a seasonal and festive peppermint mocha, which was written on the specials board (and isn't served with whipped cream if you're wondering), and I decided upon one of their many caffeine free tea offerings. This one was spicy and very warm in flavor profile, I enjoyed it very much. Also, back to the vast range of offerings on the menu, I was so impressed since for some reason I had branded this place as one of those "black coffee only" places. So,so, so not the case, Thou Mayest is a staple in the river market coffee scene and provides a warm and welcoming environment to locals and tourists of the like. I would definitely recommend stopping by

Yelp
The best little gem in Kansas City! I found this beauty as I was searching for coffee shops during my business trip. I can only speak on the cold brew. It was either super strong or I may have had too much coffee already before getting there. I'm obsessed with the overall layout and ambiance of the coffee shop. So much space and comfy seating throughout the place. It's totally a place where you would find me camping out and studying for my exams. Definitely recommend checking it out!

Yelp
I absolutely loved this place. After my first visit I made/ found a reason to return the next day. Very creative drinks, in a cozy setting, with quick service! 12/10

Yelp
Thou Mayest is brew-ti-ful! It's in the heart of Kansas City, minutes from the River Market. We stopped in before going to the River Market. I ordered the Fall Harvest Latte, which was their take on a pumpkin spice latte, and oh my gourd, it was good! They also had pastries and drinks that looked amazing. The service and atmosphere was excellent. It would be a great place to watch the game or work. I highly recommend stopping in.

Yelp
The ambiance is nice, I love the big screen and the decor, it's hard to find a seat in the house when everyone is working on their laptop - typical coffee shop. They have cereal which is cool - captain crunch needs to be added to the rotation. The espresso martini is whatever. I've never had one before, but I saw it and wanted to try - not impressed. Where's the cool foam? It didn't look appetizing or interesting. The taste was awful and I probably won't ever drink it again. Good service.

Yelp
Thou Mayest is one of my go-to remote working spots in KC. There's plenty of parking nearby, their tea service is on point and adorable (I love when I get my own little pot), and there are COMFY seats! I love that they have multiple little nooks with a comfy seat and table throughout the space. They pair this setup well with long tables and booths for those of us that need a table for our laptop. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I can't speak to that, but I have no complaints about their tea options. Again, I love getting my own little pot. :)

Yelp
I've been here a few times to grab a drink before heading to dinner or as the last stop on a night out and it's always a highlight of the night. The drinks are excellent, but I think the thing that really stands out is the staff. Every single staff member I have interacted with has been a joy to talk with. My only negative is that even later into the night there are people working on laptops taking up a good bit of space, but I can't really complain because I've always been able to find a seat. It is weird having your third drink of the night next to someone making a marketing slide deck, but the vibes are great so who cares.

Yelp
If you look at my old review for back when this was Quay Coffee, I gave it five stars, it doesn't seem possible, but the other reviews are right and since they've reopened their doors as the new Thou Mayest location it's even better. While it certainly is still a bit pretentious, it makes up for it with an amazing warm atmosphere and friendly baristas. The vibe in here is perfect for a winter morning where snow is lightly falling and you want to sit down and get some work done while sipping on a well crafted cup of joe. I think what's better than the OG iteration of this space is that the last version felt a bit sterile and modern, where this one, while still feeling very "now" is much more elegant, and unique. You walk in feeling like it has its own identity which IMO can be a bit challenging in the often oversaturated coffee shop market. At any rate, I really enjoyed my visit here and this shop would make for a wonderful spot to work, take a break, go on a date, or enjoy breakfast.

Yelp
My girls and I were trying to kill time, so we stumbled upon this coffee spot. We were greeted by Jere who graciously confirmed that Bailey's was in stock! My friends ordered The Warmer, and I originally ordered an Irish coffee but with Bailey's instead of Jameson. Unfortunately, my drink was incorrectly made, but Jere and Meg quickly fixed it. I then changed my order to hot chocolate with Bailey's, which Meg happily made. Jere also apologized and gave me a chip for a discount on my next purchase. Let me say- our drinks? D E L I C I O U S ! It was the right balance of chocolate and alcohol without being overly sweet. We also shared an apple pop tart pastry which was divine. If I'm even back in Kansas City, please believe I will be making my way back here.

Yelp
This is one of those places I contemplated not reviewing because I want to keep it to myself, but ultimately I've gotta get the word out for those looking for the best coffee in KC. Thou Mayest is such a gem. The coffee is excellent, and they have a great selection of teas for when you're looking for something non-caffeinated. The service is quick and friendly, and the atmosphere is perfect. It's not too loud, there's a good variety of seating options, and there are outlets pretty much everywhere, which makes this the perfect cafe to work in for me. The only downside to Thou Mayest is finding a seat, which can be challenging. It's not Messenger-level crowded, but it's also not Messenger-level large. I try to get here at off hours and have never been unable to find a place to sit or at least hang out for a while until another group leaves. If you love hanging out in cafes, make sure to get to Thou Mayest!

Yelp
Folks, sound the alarms we've got a contender for a top coffee shop in Kansas City! The prior Quay Coffee here was good, and made a great cup of coffee.. but I always felt like the atmosphere was OK at best, and some pretentiousness to it that was hard to ignore. Since being bought out and taken over by the popular Thou Mayest group, the vibes went from "ehh" to fantastic. When I think of this spot, I think of the natural light on the east side, the cozy comfy couches in the middle and the back, clean restrooms, the pups that are apparently allowed inside here (dogs make everything better!) the beautiful and gigantic coffee bar tying it all together, and boiled down to a few words: laid back. Beyond the cozy and inviting atmosphere, the coffee (and to be clear, I'm talking coffee like immersion brew and drip, not the lattes that I haven't tried) is a sincere contender for the best cup of coffee in Kansas City. I'd put it up there with some of the upper echelon coffee cities in the U.S. It's that good. The only small issue is one I had at their old Crossroads location: spotty Wi-Fi. I didn't have the best luck in the short time I worked here, as it cut in and out often. Thrilled to have this upgrade in the River Market, on a beautiful street with the KC Streetcar rolling by and with the signs of progress all throughout the area.

Yelp
I met a friend here for coffee over Christmas break. it was difficult to find a parking spot near by and once inside, the seating options were limited. I had their house coffee which was good, and I did get a re-fill which they promptly charged me for. The server told me next time I should pay the $6 for bottomless coffee. Why didn't she tell me that before? Overall it was a cool downtown-ish coffee shop, not sure if I would go out of my way to come back knowing there are other coffee options in the area and nothing really stood out to me here.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm only rating this four stars because this is my first time coming in. The smell of the roasting coffee that you smell as you walk past outside immediately draws you in. This coffee shop is very cozy, inviting, calm and creative. It is the perfect spot to meet up with a friend in between lunch, bring your kids in to nestle in to the couch areas or work/study at the tables alongside the front window. What's even cooler about this place, is that it turns into a bar at night! Best of both worlds. Since it is a coffee shop first, a lot of their cocktails are coffee themed. But of course they can make other drinks. This will definitely be a new favorite spot for me as I love coffee and love socially drinking without feeling like I'm at a bar. I got the spiced brown sugar cappuccino and it is delicious. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I want to start by saying my iced caramel latte with extra caramel was one of the best I've ever had! It had a silky smooth mouth feel, the perfect amount of caramel flavor and sweetness. The coffee/espresso itself was very good with Zero bitterness. The worst thing is having a burnt coffee flavor. It was perfect! The girls who served us were very sweet and helpful Very friendly! It's a very cute place with lots of room to sit and relax. My one complaint and only reason for removing a star is the fact that you can't always find a place to sit. When we came in last Sunday we wanted to sit and hang out for a few minutes while having our coffee. But all the tables and nice sitting areas were taken up by people either working or studying. People will take up a tables or sitting areas for 4 or more people and spread out their computers and work for just themselves. I don't think One person should "hog" a table for 4. Once it gets cold out and people want to come in for coffee and sit, this could be an issue. I wouldn't allow that if it were my business. It is obviously the place to sit and work, but it's also rude to other customers who also want to come in and enjoy their coffee. If you want to grab a coffee to go its just fine. But if you want to come in and sit you may not find a seat And maybe it's only a weekend issue. I've only been during the weekend We will definitely be back and hopefully be able to sit and visit. It would be a cute place to do that. On Another positive note.... they have alcohol! See photo. Turn your coffee drink into something a little extra

Yelp
Thou Mayest has the potential to be a great coffee shoppe, but ultimately is lacking and only worthy of a 3-star review. Let me explain .... The ambiance of Thou Mayest is the perfect coffee shoppe vibe. Cozy. Warm. Great seating for groups and singles. I'm not a student, nor do I live in KC, but if I were these, I would want to study at Thou Mayest. 2-stars for this. If you like coffee that is filled with milk and syrups, then you will like this place. That is their specialty. Their menu is filled with all these kinds of coffees and they do a good job at those. Thou Mayest is a fancier and better version of Starbucks. 1-star for this. That is where the 3-star review ends. I want to give more, but cannot for the following two reasons: 1) Customer service: when I ordered the pour over (what they call "immersion" because they use a Clever dripper - I have one at home too that I use frequently), the lady was obviously perturbed. This was confirmed by the fact that she asked if she could just give me drip coffee that was already in the coffee pot. I said, "no thanks. I want the pour over that is on the menu." She huffed a bit and told me, "it will take a lot of time." To which I responded, "of course. Pour over always take more time. That is what makes them yummy." She huffed again and asked again if I would rather have a drip coffee. I again refused and she reiterated it would take a while. I told her I would wait. I paid and then waited. She took other's orders and then worked on my coffee. She made little side comments to the other employee while being obviously upset that she had to get the Clever down, grind the beans fresh, weight it all out, and stand there at the Clever to make the coffee. I watched from a distance the whole time. After she poured the correct amount, she walked away to take more orders, and left my coffee for far too long, which then I knew she didn't care about my coffee. She finally finished it after 15mins (again, too long for a Clever) and gave it to me without a smile. I decided not to complain because I didn't want to wait for another cup and there was a long line. Plus it was obvious that pour over coffee (though on the menu) is not the specialty. Which brings me to my second problem ... 2) The coffee is just bad: the water was in the Clever too long, but even if it was done with care, it was obvious that the beans were either not roasted properly or were too old. This is not something you can tell with milk and syrups, but bad coffee is exposed when it is black. And Thou Mayest coffee has been exposed. So, that is the reason for my 3-stars. I would go 2.5-stars, but that is not possible on Yelp, so I'll upgrade because of the reasons at the beginning of this review. I personally will not return because I want good pour over coffee. But, if someone is in KC and likes the coffee shoppe vibe and milk&syurp coffee, then I would recommend Thou Mayest.

Yelp
Ok so decent four but my first few sips were thinking I should have gotten another shot added. But I ate my blueberry muffin which was just the right amount of hard top and delicious center just the way I like them. After that the coffee kinda opened up a little and made the rest of the drink worth it. Service was good and quick and the decor was worth the visit. Might have to stop by and try a hot one to see how it compares.

Yelp
Such a cute coffee shop! I came here to study over the summer. The atmosphere is so relaxing and love the decor of the entire place. The coffee was good and kept me focused. This is a pretty popular place so getting a seat (if you would like to stay for a while) may be tough but it is definitely worth it.

Yelp
So I went here today to grab an iced oat milk latte - the go to. And this is the second time I've been here. The first was just okay, drink was too sweet for my liking, but that's because I strayed away from my usual order, so i decided to give them another try today. I got an iced oat milk latte and upon taking a sip, it tasted like I had sucked paper through the straw, so I spit it out and took another sip - same thing. I look at the bottom of the latte and there's a ton of sediment in the bottom of it. Not terrible, but enough that I figured I could ask for them to remake the latte. I go back into the shop and wait at the pickup area for 2 minutes before anyone even looks at me (keep in mind they're 2 ft away from me), and he doesn't even address me as he puts another drink down, so I ask him about the latte. I tell him there's a weird sediment in the bottom of it (and imply I'd like another one made). He looks at me with distaste and says the oat milk is just like that. Saying they've talked to the manufacturer and it's normal. To myself I'm like this is nasty... Wouldn't you think if this is a continual issue they would just switch oat milk brands? I'd rather have a brand I didn't like as much than drink straight sediment. Kinda gross. Probs won't be back for coffee. Espresso also tasted burnt :/

Yelp
Cute space with a variety (but somewhat limited) amount of seating options--- couches, booths, tables, etc. for parties of all sizes. On a rainy day, I feel like this is the place where I want to be. I had the Spiced Brown Sugar Latte, which was nice and hot. There wasn't much spice (which I enjoyed) and the brown sugar flavor was notable. Unfortunately, the latte art is a complete fail. This photo was taken immediately upon receiving it, and it looks like a wonky smiley face, and that's still a stretch. You eat (or in this case, drink) with your eyes and I would expect better from what their socials advertise.

Yelp
Love the drinks and menu options! Best chai tea I ever had in town! The shop is also a good place to study and get work done! The a shop is big and open, noise level is quiet. The workers are also super friendly!

Yelp
Wow! This coffee shop is awesome! I loved my vanilla latte; the coffee itself was delicious and they make the syrups (I'm pretty sure) which was very flavorful. The baristas were so nice and helpful. The atmosphere was also great; they have a bunch of little nooks so you can find a quite space and feel alone in the large area. I will say the music was a touch loud for my taste, but it may not bother other people.

Yelp
If you want to find some of the best local coffee in KC, thou mayest is your place! They recently had a remodel over the last year and it definitely doesn't disappoint! They now offer cocktails to go along with their coffee and pastries! The vibe is very casual. Definitely a good spot to be at when doing work, studying, or reading a good book. The staff are very welcoming and answer all questions that you have. I ordered the harvest moon latte (my favorite coffee I think I've ever tasted in my life). It's almost like it has pumpkin purée in it. I substituted mine with oat milk, but they offer whole, skim, oat, or almond milk as well. The blueberry muffin was moist on the inside, but had the perfect crunch on top. This place is right off the street car, so very accessible! They also offer street parking as well. I will definitely be supporting local coffee shops like this over chains any day!

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops, if not the favorite, in Kansas City. The baristas are incredibly friendly and always very helpful. I come here a lot for long study days and the ambience is perfect - lots of natural light, plenty of outlets, and great music. I recommend the London Fog or the Mocha Latte. If you're looking for a coffee shop, this is a must try. One tip, it can get kinda chilly so be sure to bring a jacket if you get cold easily.

Yelp
Great cinnamon rolls, iced coffee, alcoholic beverages. Great seating options at the bar and unique booths throughout the space. One of my new fav coffee spots!

Yelp
I visited Thou Mayest on my recent trip to Kansas City with my husband. It was recommended to me by a local, and there's nothing I appreciate more than a great local coffee shop. We stopped here on our first day in the city because we were both pretty tired and needed a pick-me-up. I opted for their seasonal espresso tonic, which was made with a hoppy syrup, and my husband ordered a cortado. Both were delicious! We bought a bag of coffee beans and they gave us a token to take some money off of our next purchase, so I was excited that we would be able to come back! They do this with every purchase of coffee beans. I love the concept because it causes you to come back for m The atmosphere was also really nice - lots of greenery. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting KCMO.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops in rivermarket. The inside decor is so cute and cozy and I love to work out of here. Make sure you stop by in the afternoon too and get one of their great cocktails!

Syd C.

Yelp
I ordered the cold brew coffee here. It was fantastic and service was quick. Everyone from the cashier to the man who handed me my coffee was super sweet and had beaming, beautiful smiles. The last time I was here was in 2018 right after I had my daughter and it's still the same wonderful clean place and welcoming atmosphere I remembered. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that parking in this area is difficult to find on a Saturday afternoon due to being so close to the River Market. That's not the coffee shop's fault, but does add to the overall experience. We parked at least 5 blocks away and walked here in the heat. It was worth it though. My 5 year old got a treat at Betty Rae's for being a trooper.
google avatar

Yelp
The redesign and Thou Mayest takeover has given this location life! The interior decor is awesome and gives a very cozy vibe (similar to the original Front Range). They have a great selection of seasonal and specialty coffees available. I had the J Rieger barrel conditioned cold brew and it was spectacular! It also appears they have a full bar and plenty of bar/table seating. Probably my favorite River Market coffee shop.
google avatar

Tyga M.

Yelp
Really glad to see this come back! I'm also glad to see that it still kept its chill and eclectic vibe, one that especially comes out in the decor. I think I visited during a soft opening on a weeknight, so it wasn't wildly busy (nor was it dead), but the staff seemed very tired. That's not my reason for the one-star knock though - I feel that I could have made my hot chocolate drink, called The Warmer", at home. It was good, but nothing stood out to me to where I'd get it again. Luckily, there are other cocktails offered that seem to be more unique, so I'll opt for those, and visit on a weekend night to get a better feel of the spot.
google avatar

Shelby B.

Yelp
Decent coffee, but pretty price for the size. My cappuccino was a little on the bitter side, so if I were to go back, I would add a flavor shot to help. COVID has Thou Mayest running on a to go only system and they require masks and social distancing when waiting in line.

Yelp
Living in the River Market area is such a blessing for me. At times I find myself exploring places that I've never seen before, or just happen to stumble upon Thou Mayest while on my daily walks, this is how I've noticed the establishment was open once again after what seemed like an eternity. Today was a gloomy and snow ridden day so I decided to work from here. It's interior aesthetic was giving me very rustic, cabin fever vibes with fits it completely. Exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and half wood panels. dividing some seatings two booths, and my favorite addition, the bar area seeing at least 10 comfortably. This area also has extension cords along with hangers under the bar itself to hang purses, coats, etc. Moving on. I ordered a 12oz. Vanilla Latte (hot) with Oak milk for $6.87. It was brought out to me from one of the baristas within minutes. Very flavorful and delicious. Overall I'd say the grand opening was a huge success, and will become by go to local coffee shop. P.s. If you're wanting a quaint, and quiet area too work from, this is it.

Yelp
I loved the original Crossroads location and the other reviews are right -- this newer location definitely keeps those vibes! It would be amazing if they could get a second story again for more seating, but one can only hope. Traditional macchiato was very good, as was the Ethiopian light roast drip (forget the exact name). Looking forward to coming in during an evening soon. Pretty hard to find a coffee place that's open late that isn't a s___bucks, so thanks for being open!

Yelp
On vacation, we literally walked the entire city- included in our goals was to try the very best coffee the city had to offer, and there is a lot of good coffee in this city. This place is tied for the 1 and 2 spot with another place. It offered much needed comfort at the end of a long day of touring. The two baristas on staff were really friendly which is almost as important to cafe culture as the taste of the coffee. The inside looked roomy and comfortable but I was more appreciative of the few outdoor tables. They had a few specialty drinks and I ordered the Ever Green Elixir which was exceptionally great. The price is right too. I highly recommend. Slight bonus was the cute little boutique next door, Kate, employee was really helpful and delightful- maybe the folks in KC are just plain nice.

Yelp
Came in at 11am for a quick pick me up. They were out of all espresso drinks...how?! Opted for a cold brew, with spice brown sugar syrup and almond milk. While I was hoping for a cappuccino, I was really pleased with that cold brew. It was one of the best cold brews I've had--insanely smooth, and not bitter, like some others. The spiced brown sugar syrup was amazing!!! Slightly sweet, so much flavor with it being spiced. I'll have to come back when they have espresso in stock.

Yelp
I love the taste of coffee, and if you can somehow enhance that taste, you've just made me a regular. Quay is one of those places that serves REALLY good coffee and in any form -you're craving. It's a great spot to sit and work or study while keeping up the caffination levels. I especially love their home-made syrups - you can't go wrong with brown sugar and honey! They're menu may not be as extensive as other places, but what they do serve, they bring to the next level of spectacular.

Yelp
Definitely a cool coffee shop, I got a decaf pour over which was very good. Sat at the bar and got some work done. Definitely a very hipster vibe but overall welcoming and great place to get good coffee and some work done.

Yelp
Would love to give this place more stars, but the service ruined it. We stopped in after dinner for some coffee and the baristas didn't greet us as we walked to the counter. There were 3 people working behind the counter and no one in line. we walked up to order and again no one said anything. I ordered a (hot) brown sugar oat milk latte and my husband ordered the barrel cold brew. As we were placing our orders, a couple came in behind us and immediately the guy taking our order started talking to them making us wait. ?? We stood there for at least 5 minutes waiting to pay for our drinks as he chatted it up with the people behind us. Finally we sat down in a booth to wait for our drinks. Mine was ready in about 5 mins , but it was an ICED latte when I definitely ordered it hot. I just decided to drink it anyway because I felt that everyone was too distracted and didn't want to go through the hassle. We waited and waited for my husbands cold brew. About 15 mins later he said "I didn't know I ordered the most complicated drink on the menu" .... We waited another 5 mins and then he went up to the counter to ask about it. It was ready within a minute...they just forgot about it. ?! Why when there are 3 people working and no line, does an order get forgotten? We love the good quality coffee here and the old Thou Mayest location was one of our most frequent date spots. The owner was always amazing and the baristas were friendly and efficient. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case with this location. The vibe is great but the service this night was very poor. Hopefully it was just an off night, but I could tell that baristas didn't really want to be there (unless a friend stops by!)

Yelp
Vibes are immaculate. Coffee is ok. Service is...not great. Overall a cool spot to study or work, just don't expect anyone to be kind.

Yelp
Decisions on where to eat and drink can be challenging for me when I'm traveling, especially because there are so many great options in Kansas City! On the morning I left the Country Club Plaza area for the airport, I searched for coffeeshops between there and the airport. I stumbled upon Quay Coffee, which was an excellent choice. The biggest downside was the fact that it was a Monday, and there seemed to be a 2-hour parking limit on the streets. Maybe there was a better place, but probably helped me work faster and more efficiently. The barista was sweet, as she stared at my indecision about which coffee and pastry to get. So many tasty-sounding options! I ended up getting a latte with spiced brown sugar, as well as a rosemary and walnut scone. Both excellent and would recommend. Plenty of seating. I sat by the window where there were electrical outlets and plenty of sunlight. Wifi was strong. Really, the whole experience was perfect. I headed to the airport after while thinking about how much I love Kansas City.

Yelp
Ordered a vanilla latte and cheddar chive biscuit, and both were delicious! Probably some of the best I've had. The service was okay but the vibe of the place is pretty cool.

Yelp
Best coffee shop in KC. The drinks are fantastic, the vibes are through the roof, but the baristas bring the experience to the next level. It's a community experience worth checking out.

Yelp
Excellent coffee!! The barista was efficient and good at her work. The place was definitely set up for COVID and social distancing which we appreciated. There is no seating available. It is all to-go. The seasonal drinks were excellent and the iced lattes and coffees were great too.

Yelp
Cool coffee shop in a hip urban neighborhood with a street car and bike sharing. Plenty of street parking. They have a house-made caramel that's delicious. It's called Old Overholt Caramel. It's a really nice space with a bank vault with table and chairs you can sit in. Good indie music, nice latte art, decent offering of pastry including huge pop tarts... with sprinkles!! Ha ha.

Yelp
A good, no-nonsense, third wave coffee shop in the heart of the river market district of Kansas City. I came here twice and mostly liked my experience. Here's the scoop: The coffee: I give the actual coffee a 7/10: They do not roast their own beans, but use local-ish roasters instead. I say "ish" because there were no roasters from the KC area represented here, but all their beans came from either Missouri or Oklahoma. My almond milk latte was just so/so: the almond milk they use does not steam very well, so it tasted a little burnt and harsh. My pour-over was a lot better; it was well made and consistent with the advertised flavor profile. The shop itself: 9/10: Lots of space and seating options, including a lot of space for working. Plugs are available at almost all the seating that's near a wall. Some more comfy options as well. Cool lighting and love the big windows in the front. Wifi is fast and free. They open earlier and stay open later than many other coffee places in the area. The location: 9/10: Very convenient location the heart of the river market area and right off the street car (which is free!). You can be here from as far away as Union Station in 15 minutes. Parking seems pretty ample. In all, this is a good choice for coffee in downtown KC, particularly if you need to get some work done, although they do not roast their own beans.

Yelp
My husband and I have a lot of memories centered around Thou Mayest (the original spot in the Crossroads) We had some of our first dates there, great times with friends, tiki parties and we got a lot of our wedding pictures taken there. We were absolutely devastated when they had to close that location. When River Quay reopened and I walked in for the first time, I tested up. It was so similar to the original place. It had the same vibes. Felt the same. It was warm and cozy and felt kind of like a cabin in the woods. Trees and plants everywhere, a bar, ample seating for everyone, eclectic decor and such a friendly staff. They had brought in these vintage green pockets that had been at The Crossroads location and we had gotten some wedding pictures taken in front of. Everything was just... perfect. The coffee and beverages were just as good as ever! This is somewhere I will come back to over and over again

Yelp
What a cute little space. It's a great location in the River market, a block from the open air market and literally right by the street car stop. There are several coffee places in the market area, and you can't really go wrong with any of them, but Thou Mayest has a certain craftsmanship that makes it stand out. Also, if you're down in the market area on a nice Saturday, I always recommend this place simply because the location keeps it just a tiny bit less crowded than the shops right in the heart of the farmer's market. As an aside, I always judge the quality of a coffee shop by their cortado (two oz espresso, 2 oz milk) and this place has one of the best in the city!

Yelp
One of the most classic coffee shops in KC. The unique theme of Quay coffee is embedded in their name, their drink options, and their decorations scattered throughout the shop, and I love it! Located on the streets near river market, it is a common site for many locals but also welcomes new coffee shop-goers. The baristas are extremely friendly, and the man who was helping my mom and I offered us samples of their syrup and discussed the sources of their coffee. I found it to be very interesting that their espresso is ground by a coffee shop in St. Louis called Blueprint coffee that I had visited this summer. My mom and I both opted for the lemon lavender honey latte with almond milk because the taste was light and refreshing in comparison to the askinosie dark milk chocolate syrup that was much richer. The latte was delicious and certainly hit the spot for a cool beverage on a warm day. There is plenty of seating options in this coffee shop for those who are studying and even for larger groups of people. I can certainly understand why people would enjoy studying in this ambience, and I certainly hope to return in the future!
