If your looking for a romantic low key spot ,this isn't it. We had to listen to a lady picking up her order yap on her phone loudly the entire time right behind us in wait area. Restaurant is extremely small,which means the bathroom is even smaller. Bathroom could have been cleaner,there was no hand soap. Was very disappointed in the crab Rangoon. It was very pink and tasted funny.BUT the good points. The portions was enough for two when ordering a dish. The staff was friendly ,prices weren't too bad and the orange chicken dish was really good. I would actually go back for the orange chicken alone. But if your someone who doesn't like small spaces this place isn't for you.

Came here after a concert, heavily craving some Chinese food. Being the only place open late nearby, my partner and I decided to try it on a whim. Environment is very old school (not necessarily always bad, some old school places actually have the best food) and somewhat cozy. The staff present were very nice, but I do wish they had communicated to us that we had to pay before getting our food??? Quite strange. Dishes were very lackluster. The sesame and lemon chicken are basically unseasoned chicken nuggets dunked into sauce with a side of rice. The egg rolls were actually pretty good and sadly the best part of our meal. Don’t think I’d ever come back unless I’m very desperate. Perhaps I’ll give their other dishes a try.

I went here because several people said that it was the best in Chinatown. I have not tried every restaurant here, but this was by far the best Chinese food that I have ever eaten. Highly recommended. Affordable and delicious.

I went here based on a family member recommendation, saying the food was delicious. The set up of the restaurant was lackluster..but I've seen worse Unfortunately my experience was not the same. Because it was my first time there, I tried the basics of shrimp fried rice and chicken wings. The rice was good,but very greasy. The chicken wings were hot and smelled good but once I bit into it they had an unusual smell similar to that of chitterlings. I really had hoped I found a restaurant,, but unfortunately, I will not be returning.

(sad) Not too many old-school Cantonese restaurants left and this is a very nice one that is open late. Highly recommend for carry out!

I got the plain fried rice with no beans sprouts an extra egg. That is what you see in this photo. It was good. I also ordered the spicy beef. I wanted it to be like the Beijing beef from Panda express. They told me that it was and I was very sad when I got it. It’s this big beef stew that does not taste good & was oddly spicy. Nevertheless, the plain fried rice was good. Dark fried rice it’s a bit sweet because of the dark soy sauce it’s cooked in. I enjoyed my rice and the extra egg on top was great.

Terrible smell inside the restaurant, specifically smelled like drainage water and old pipes, basement smell. I ordered a combo rice and it was salty and had rice pieces that were difficult to bite on. Will not return to this restaurant again, it was an unpleasant experience.

A literal hole in the wall devoid of any bogieness. They are however open till 1 pm this Saturday night and the prices are more than fair. The stand outs were the salt and pepper pork chops, salt and pepper smelt and the subgum Fried rice. The seafood combo in white sauce was good. You Pay in advance Before you get your food. And yes you tip ahead of time too. Take of that what you will, however with the superior dishes they put out and the prices they charge- you cannot complain. Yes In my humble opinion they deserve five stars.

Good authentic Chinese Food!!! Great egg drop soup. Nice menu. Waitstaff are friendly and quick to bring food and drinks.

We appreciated the quiet ambiance on a warm, sunny Mother's Day. We were there for an early 5pm dinner and had great service and ordered crab Rangoon, pan fried Cantonese noodles with vegetables and salt pepper squid. The food came out promptly and was delicious. I have fond memories of this decades old restaurant that used to also serve dim sum. I was a little sad that the interior was run down with torn seats giving it that extra hole in the wall ambiance .

1st red flag was handing us very watery sweet and sour sauce! 2nd finding shells in our egg foo young had to beg for sauce in packets

Ordered Szechuan shrimp. Took a little longer than told but not by much. While waiting for my food another patron pointed out a gnat in a hot sauce they were served. Still no problem. However, after starting to eat found that there was pieces of meat included. Will not be returning here.

Back in the day, I used to love this place! Now it's just a horrible hole in the wall that puts peas in carrots in the rice. How can a Chinese food place in Chinatown mess up Chinese fried rice? basically everything was a greasy horrible blob. Not the three happiness that I remember.

When I was sent here for orange chicken, I was surprised at the flavor. I was not expecting to taste orange! The sauce was perfect. The chicken was fresh, not over battered and not over seasoned! The next time I order any breaded chicken I would ask for any sauce on the side. I love the crunchy texture and if I could get crunch out of every bite, I would be a happy eater! The steamed rice was very fluffy. The egg rolls had large chunks of pork and nice blend of veggies. The crab Rangoon also had a large amount of crab blended with the cheese which also had a great flavor. This was my first time here and when I'm back in Chicago, I will bring friends and family!

My husband and I were visiting from out of town and came across Three Happiness. We asked the server for suggestions and she didn't disappoint. We ended up ordering everything she suggested and we loved it all. We are coming up on the 1 year anniversary of when we visited, and my husband talks about Three Happiness's noodles and duck at least 2x a month. We're planning a day trip soon just so we can eat here again.

Hole in the wall kind of place. Easy to miss. Food is good. Consistent. Intimate family restaurant. Everything's made to order and comes out quickly. Definitely worth a try!

The food here is delicious. Highly recommend the orange chicken, shrimp with broccoli and potstickers. Be aware that you must pay when you order and that you'll be asked for a tip as soon as they see you're finished eating.

Yummy! This spot was recommended by a friend and I was not disappointed. Food was so good and fresh.

This place used to be my go-to spot for quick, cheap, decent Chinese food in Chinatown, with friendly service. They are no longer any of those things. The employees now are rude and nasty rather than friendly. Several dishes have doubled in price; all have gone up more than anywhere else in the area. They wanted $2 for a single fortune cookie that as of 3 months ago was free with my order. My chicken fried rice with no green or spring onions took 42 minutes (they weren't even busy) AND HAD ONIONS IN IT BUT JO CHICKEN. She wasn't even going by the menu price, but somehow rounded up to 10.00 even. For rice with onions. That I am allergic to. So no longer quick, friendly, cheap, or tasty. What a disappointment.

This is my go to Chinese takeout spot. I have been going here since I was very young; nearly 30 years now! Authentic taste and fair pricing. Definitely a no frills spot- but you will enjoy every bite!

Been there 100 times everything from the egg rolls to the egg foo young is awesome. Sweet and sour chicken is mouth watering.

I asked the staff for their popular noodles dish and they recommended beef. It was very oily and drowned in sauce and not well-cooked. We were in a group of 7 people and they forgot to bring one of the dishes. Wish they had brought all the food together. Tofu in a different dish was very soft and not fully cooked either. Staff seemed fairly uninterested. Would not come back again

I wouldn't eat from this hell hole if it was the last cuisine on earth. The service is disgusting, the interior disgusting, and the food let's not even talk about that. The seats are damaged , the servers are old and disrespectful, they don't dust at all just look in that place and the people in charge of handling issues won't fix them . They don't refund food if it's bad they take your money and yell. I wouldn't take my worst enemy yo this place I can't can't believe they are open for business with this style of business ethics. I recommend the bottked water it's clearly the best thing on the menu . If I could go negative on here I would . They are very kind to Asian and white clientele but black clientele you can forget it .

Best dim sum. Great quality. Get shu mai, bbq pork bao, and sesame balls. Chicken feet if you are adventurous. Highly recommend.

I've been buying food from 3 Happiness for YEARS and today is not a good day, this food is almost Uneatable! It's going in the GARBAGE!

The dim sum is awesome here. I have been coming here with my family since I was a boy. I am now in my 50s and the place is still here and can be relied on to serve up delicious dim sum at very affordable prices. The space can use a remodel. It is stuck in the 80s. Food makes up for what is lacking in ambience.

The orange beef is unlike any orange beef I've ever ordered and when I tried to send it back they asked why I didn't like it & got an attitude and said "well you can do that" as they just walked off. It was very rude and the food is not worth the money !

This is my go to place when eating Chinese food. Orange chicken is fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Must go here to experience Chinese food at 100

This place is a hole in the wall but the food is DELICIOUS! The generous portions are more than enough for 2 people. The waitress was very attentive and really nice.

I took a long ride to support my favorite hole-in-a-wall restaurant after seeing how empty Chinatown was on a mid-Saturday morning yesterday. It was comforting to see they were busy taking carry out orders, an indication they're the lucky ones who are surviving. The longer ride home was torture with the aroma from the potstickers, beef stew and stuffed tofu from the containers. Although I was very tempted to take a bite, I waited until I got home, made a plate, and ate like a civilized person. Everything was delicious, as always. This place has not disappointed me in over 30 years. I will continue to go back and recommend it to my friends.

Service is trash. Rude woman repeatedly picked up the phone screaming "We not taking takeout orders" and hung up!! I wasn't even calling about a takeout order but Oh Well! It's already a dump but you're rude on top of that. I'll take my catering order elsewhere for 200 Alex

Fine. It's very small so not much room to wait for take out. 15 dollar card minimum which seems like a lot. The food itself was good. I watched a man lose consciousness and the staff did nothing but have him HOT water to drink? Didn't even call 911 so another patron had to. Also they were wearing their masks below their chin. Why wear it at all then? You don't even have to.

Was a decent late night find, staff was very friendly, but I was not crazy about the panhandling directly outside. Call your order in for faster and better service late at night. They close at midnight or later some nights...

This is definitely your hole in the wall. The food is great. It's one of the few places that open late. The service is so so but it's a economical place that fills you up.

This is a good cheap eats place. The food is on the oilier side but hits the Chinese food craving. I really liked the beef flat noodles and would order that again.

Love this place since 1989. Really good food! Love the fried squid, spring rolls, wings, egg foo young etc. Just wonderful!

Ehhh I really wanted to leave a good review but honestly it was pretty bad I had to toss out the leftovers. We got the beef with chow fun ( thick rice noodle) n asked for extra spicy n peapods as a second dish. However the beef Chow fun was so saucy but that it was almost like stew , the noodles were buried under the meat n it seem like they didn't mix them together in the wok. It was like they took some gob of beef n veggie steamed over a pan with soy sauce msg gravy ? n covered it then plopped it on chow fun that also seemed to be heated up separately. The pea pod were so chewy n soft like it was soaked in some gravy that they were inedible after a while bc u would just be eating some weird peapod gravy. It felt like veggie u take out of a van n heated but it's not fresh or crispy. Sigh I know they r og n I would love to promote og Chinese places but I really can't recommend to anyone... unless u enjoy gravy like Chinese food . Ugh just saying it makes me nauseous.

I was just in here today after not buying from here in years , it used to be decent food at a good price , but I swear to you when I walked in today it smelled like a pet store !!! It was disgusting and I was immediately turned off ! It was too gross to stomach.

Yes, this place is not as fancy as the other restaurants, but they do have a full menu including Dim Sum. We decided to order some Dim Sum dishes, the egg drop soup, order of egg rolls and my guest ordered the Mongolian Beef. Food was good and I would definitely come back if I wanted traditional Chinese Food with no frills. The egg drop soup was very good, I would like to try other traditional items on the menu and I would stay away from the items on the Dim Sum menu.

More of a hole in the wall type of place in Chinatown and not the most fancy interior, but definitely give it a chance. They have in business for 50 years or something absurd like that. We let most of our dish choices by guided by recommendations from our waitress, and we weren't disappointed. Everything was delicious and the staff was great too.

Three Happiness is exactly the kind of place that makes me grateful that I live a 10-minute bus ride from Chinatown, and just generally grateful for Chicago Chinatown. It's delicious food at amazing prices (you can get a meal here for $6!). Even though their menu is intimidatingly large (pages on pages) and makes it feel hard to decide what to get, my experience here makes me confident that you could get anything and get something good. And that is what makes a place great. We got too much food because we were really hungry - the salt and pepper squid, sauteed oysters with scallions and ginger, crabmeat and shrimp dumplings, and shrimp pancake noodle rolls. I'm normally not particularly impressed by salt and pepper squid at places, but this was so well-seasoned and delicious. I understood why the shrimp pancake noodle rolls, which I normally see as shrimp noodle rolls, had pancake in the name, as they are fatter than the other kinds I've seen elsewhere. Nevertheless, they were as yummy as I remembered, if not yummier than some that I've had elsewhere. The crabmeat and shrimp dumplings were decent, but not super memorable. The sauteed oyster definitely had a strong oyster taste, and wasn't really something either me or my friend enjoyed too much or would probably get again. I loved my experience though - it was exactly the meal I needed, the kind that makes you happier after you eat there, and I'll definitely be back.

The guy in the front at night is rude and disrespectful and then you have to spend $15 at night to be able to use debit or credit. Touched my phone and took it off speaker saying nobody wanted to hear my con and threw his hands up at me. I wish I could give 0 stars will never go back again

Been coming here for over a decade and up until now it's been the spot for Chinese food. I don't know what happened, but they really fell off. Three Happiness? More like Three Dissapointments. The tea we ordered never arrived. That I can forgive, but being rushed to leave is not forgivable. It was dead inside and it felt insulting. To add insult to injury we were aggressively solicited for a tip after the lackluster service. I will not be back after this. They are not the only game in Chicago.

omg I was there today it was the worst experience ever. I heard so many rats running crying it sound horrible all noise was coming from the drop ceiling. I hope they do something about this.

The beef and broccoli is the best we've ever eaten! The orange chicken is very good. You must try the crab Rangoon, as well. The waitstaff is so polite and accommodating.

It's a small place, the gentleman at the front counter and everyone behind the scenes work SO hard. The food is delicious, been coming here for 20 years!

Prior to our visit, I had looked inside the Three Happiness Original Restaurant many times, but never dined there before as it was always crowded. All I knew was that old time Chicago cognoscenti of Cantonese cuisine praised their food. We had the small no-frills dining area to ourselves. The menu was extensive. We started with two easy but (to me) essential appetizers: egg rolls and shrimp toast. Both were exactly what they should be, with fresh, easy-to-like tastes. We followed with two entrees, shrimp with Chinese vegetables and Singapore noodles. Again, they met with our satisfaction, as they were cooked properly with good quality ingredients. Every person working in the front of the house visited our table at some point in the meal, and they were all very polite and welcoming. It is harder to read expressions when someone is masked, of course, but I thought the table service was just right. I heard the conversations of those coming in to pick up carry-out orders and it was obvious how much the regular customers love this restaurant and the kind folks who operate it. In summary, the dishes were competent, generous portions of the kind of Chinese comfort food I have known all my life.

Food amazing, staff are super sweet. food is family style, very large portions. It's a small mom and pop business. it's a casual setting. great for a date when your looking to eat well for an amazing price for 4 people it was less than $100 and we even had left overs. Whenever we have people come from out of town we bring them here.

they laughed at me and called me curse words in chinese as I stooped on the curb (a hungry traveler just trying to eat anything besides frozen hotel food) eating my " chicken lo mein" which I did not receive, what I was thrown together was just raw chicken with stock and some vegetables not a noodle in sight. And I assumed from the laughter and scoffs, and cursing that I was ingesting some form of spit or harmful improperly cooked raw meat. I instantly felt sick to my stomach, $16 wasted I threw it away at the hotel and bought a frozen Disaronno microwavable pizza. Don't go here if you're a respectable person trying to eat and not get food poisoning/eat spit.

Absolutely amazing good food! Always served with such great service and I am always seated immediately upon arrival. Wait time for food is not very long at all, employees and staff are such great people and very generous/nice. I love looking forward to eating here when I stop into Chicago for some authentic Chinese food! I will be back for sure! If your looking for amazing food and a short wait, this place is for you!!!

We, as a family, three generations included, have been eating here since the the 70's. Having eaten at many other restaurants in Chinatown, I can assure you this is as fine a restaurant that Chinatown has to offer. The fact that they've been there for decades speaks volumes.

The food was excellent! It is "a diamond in the rough." Looks "like a nothing place" but it is super and you can sit and sit and sit.

The best Chinese food I've ever had! I was in Chinatown last night and had this restaurant recommended to me by a friend who said he gets food from this place every time he comes to Chinatown. I decided to try it, and it was amazing! I usually don't like Mongolian beef, but I loved it from here. Also, the staff is super friendly! So happy I found Three Happiness and can't wait to come back :)

This is my first time to order from this place, and it's my last time as well. I barely write reviews especially negative one. There was still a label on the green pepper in my Singapore noodles! They probably even didn't wash the vegetables. I understand different restaurants have their own recipes and ways to cook, but I don't think the Generals Tso's chicken is right. When I saw it, especially the sauce and chicken were departed, I thought it was Orange Chicken, anyway the taste was terrible. 2 stars is for thanking all the work. I appreciate they are still open during the tough time. Hope they can improve and get more business.
