The Best Breweries in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Located just off Stark Street in the heart of Montavilla, Threshold puts out impressive, experimental beers reliant on an eclectic range of hops. It initially created buzz for its hazy IPAs, but now, Portland beer power couple Jarek and Sara Szymanski’s brewery has become the place to be for layered barrel-aged beers and nuanced farmhouse ales as well. The space is humble, with picnic tables and a modest bar, but it also serves zapiekanka, a hard-to-find Polish street food, for sustenance." - Ron Scott

8 Best Breweries in Portland, Oregon, Currently Open for Business | Condé Nast Traveler

"A smaller place and not quite a destination yet, Threshold is home mostly to neighborhood residents. There's around a dozen beers on tap each day, most of which are ales, though the occasionally crisp lager can be found. The key here is variety, from sours to barley wines, fruit-infused stouts to classic, NW IPAs. Despite the wide selection, each is brewed with considerable care and focus. And while most of the focus is on the beer at Threshold, the snacks are more than an afterthought. Platters of Olympia Provisions charcuterie and cheese plates pair nicely with the pours." - Alexander Frane

What a gem. Discovered on my way to the airport. Great vibes! Great grub! Great beer! What more can you ask for? Oh yeah, great pricing! A+ highly recommend!

Threshold Brewing has great Polish style themed beer. I rarely get to Montavilla, but it is worth the effort. There is only street parking, but it is easy enough to find to the north in the neighborhood. The business is dog friendly and has dog treats. There is a beer club and the brewery offers snacks and Zapiekanka, a Polish style pizza.

Awesome Montavilla treasure with delicious beer and a nice spot to hang out. Had 8 beers or so and loved them all. My favorite is the fresh hop hazy but their sparks IPA is basically a tie. Food wise the pierogis are super delicious. Also really dug my Zapiekanka. If there’s a lot of people being loud the sound can bounce around but it’s not as bad. Great place to meet up with friends and maybe make new ones. Staff are super friendly as well.

Very cool vibes at Threshold! The beer selection is fun and the bartender was very chill. There’s not much food selection here, but the area does have plenty of places to get something to eat. We went on a Friday which I think is karaoke night! It was fun for the time we were there, but very loud! There was outdoor seating, but it is not heated so dress warm.

I’ll try to stick to just facts here: 1) If you order a beer for outside they pour 12oz; if you drink inside you get a full pint—same price either way. The server poured me about 11oz in a 12oz cup with no head. The bartender’s excuse was “these are the only plastic cups we have…”. So if you intend to drink outside be prepared to pay full price for ~30% less beer. Pathetic. 2) Only 1 person working the counter despite it being a block party/event night. It wasn’t even that busy but there was still a noticeable wait. 3) The server had NO clue what a West Coast IPA was (probably because they don’t make any that aren’t either hazy, juicy, or imperial). At least she wasn’t able to suggest an IPA alternative to the hazy/juicy choices on the tap list. Call me old school… 4) It was moist and damp inside, like a locker room. Air conditioning clearly needs help. I don’t care if you’re brewing beer in there or not. Do better. It felt gross on a warm day. This should probably be point #1. It was noticeable immediately. Lastly) The sad graffiti on the street patio boards hadn’t been painted over nearly a year later (based on the poet graffiti artist inscription). Apropos, is it not?

Our beautiful Portland weather window is closing fast, so we took a motorcycle ride down to the Montavilla neighbourhood... and found Threshold Brewing & Blending. Perfect spot for us, we wanted a good beer and a light snack. Enter the Zapiekanka, which is a toasted baguette with mushrooms and Polish cheese. Hubby had the kielbasa version, and I had the Classic. And my lucky day, the Classic came spooky - see photo - just in time for Hallowe'en! The beer is amazing, I had the Perun, a Polish dark lager, and hubby had the Neptune, a Baltic porter. I could easily have scarfed down another zapiekanka, they are so good, but if I have another of those we'll need another beer, and we're on a motorcycle, sooo.... Next time we'll drive our car and pace ourselves!

Google
Great atmosphere. The team working the brewery was fun, kind, and knowledgeable. It is so refreshing to have servers who are passionate about beer and care. The place is immaculately clean. Great selection of their beer and guest taps. Also have gluten free selections.

Yelp
Threshold Brewing & Blending is definitely a brewery I walked away being very impressed with! Steve and I had three of their beers. All three being different beer styles so we got a nice, broad view of what we can expect. The first beer was the Plum Decision. Yes, a plum beer. I liked it pretty well. It was definitely experimental and creative with it's flavor with the plum of course followed by dry, tartness, chocolate and sweetness. Lots of complexity there. The beer just kept getting better and better with The Cruise. A Grodziskie beer. Something you don't see much at all. This is a light and quaffable beer with a smoky flavor along with a bready wheat flavor. Very good and something a craft beer adventurer should try. Jack Knife was the final beer of the three. A Milk Stout. Definitely a change of pace as this was a thick, sweet beer but so delicious! Flavor highlights with this are smokiness, whisky and marshmallows. Really a good stout to settle down to for the evening. Most appropriate for on a cold, wintery evening by the fireplace or a crisp evening around a camp fire.

Yelp
Totally have to come back! I was there for the 5K run and enjoyed the hazy and heard others talking about the IPA. Will have to go back to try more beers! Parking is harder to come by and you'll be parking a block or two away on a residential side street

Yelp
Came for Cousins lobster. Really loved the place. Bartender was great. Made a perfect recommendation and gave a taste. Cool neighborhood ambience and some great events. Definitely check it out. Really enjoyed the Polish style Pilsner.

Yelp
Cute, local spot in Downtown Montavilla. They have a lovely beer selection and quick bites. The patio is great for spring and staff is kind.
google avatar

Rose D.

Yelp
They have a nice setup with a big garage door to open up the inside when the weather is nice, and a half-dozen picnic tables outside in covered patio seating out on the sidewalk, along with a couple other little tables & chairs outside. Their beer lineup is very heavy on the IPAs, making up half of the 10 beers on tap when we were there. Our friend had a flight of their IPAs and I had a flight of all their other beers & guest cider. They have a small food menu as well with some snacks and a few variations on an open-faced Polish type of sandwich that's served toasted and warm (check out their website for more details on the different sammie options). We each had the Combo version of the Polish sammie and loved it. The fella manning the taps was nice and when the keg blew for the cider on tap I had selected as part of my flight he was happy to let me choose from the other ciders in cans to open and poured that in the flight-sized glass for me instead. They're dog-friendly, too!

Yelp
Great beers and comfortable atmosphere. The food selection is small but tasty. We happened to go of a crafty Tuesday and spent sometime coloring.

Yelp
Great little brewpub with a decent assortment of really good beers. Airy with a nice ambiance and pleasant service. You can bring in your own food or order food at the counter. Beer flights are reasonably priced.

Yelp
Super cool spot! We had cider so I can't comment on the beer, but they have a great, spacious indoor area and lovely outdoor seating with heaters. Abe was super friendly and knowledgeable about all their cool drink options. I tried some of the warm mulled hoppy beer. It was tasty and quite warming. I look forward to coming back and trying their beers.

Yelp
My partner and I LOVE stopping by Threshold. They offer a great selection of seasonal beers which my partner enjoys while I get to enjoy the smoothie beers - don't knock it till you try it. You can even take some beers home as they have canned options. Try their Polish pizza as a small bite! Great neighborhood spot and so glad we discovered it. Best part: dogs allowed on the patio. What a great excuse to "walk the dogs" and grab a bevy on the way home ;)

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place a while, but their hours made that difficult. Plain post-industrial space with some nice barn wood on the walls. Good range among the tap selections. The three beers I had were all well done, Limited food options. First bartenders very friendly; second one (the brewer) a little quieter,

Yelp
Threshold Brewing is a must-visit craft brewery in Portland. The owners, Sara and Jarek, are an absolute riot. Their dog-friendly taproom and patio are a great spot to hang out and grab a pint in the Montavilla neighborhood. They host events all the time! You won't disappointed!
google avatar

Nat L.

Yelp
Great spot for brews in Montavilla. Always a good bunch of dogs hangin with their parents. In the summer they host popup markets and have great trivia and events.

Yelp
Cool place solid local brewery good selection came in on accident during their fourth anniversary

Yelp
The pumpkin sour was good an so unique! Super stoked we found this place! The outside Parklet seating was great & the staff was super friendly, wish we lived closer so we could come back all the time!

Yelp
Threshold has a light industrial feel to it that I find just right. Something else that was just right on our most recent visit was a suggestion by the bartender to try two variations as part of a taster. One was the "Jens Bailed Grisette farmhouse ale" and the other was the "Jens In The Woods 'Whiskey' barrel aged" version of the same beer. I've always been skeptical of oddball aging processes, but this was a fascinating and delicious change. The third thing that worked perfectly on our last visit was food provided by Kichana. We had a quesadilla with purple cabbage that I would happily return to experience as a main reason to visit.

Adam D.

Yelp
Great beer. Great service. Great atmosphere. They have 9 of their own beers on tap, all of which are very IPA heavy, plus a few guest taps for a total of 12 drafts. Kid friendly given the games and snack menu, unlike their neighbor, Montavilla, who gave us the boot as soon as the baby in the stroller rolled in.
google avatar

Craig T.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Every beer we tried (and I think it was all of them!) is world class, and I've never heard of a "zapiekanka" before, but I'm going to dream about that thing. This place is a reason to move to Oregon.
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
Only about five of their brews are on tap. I like two. However, the coffee porter left me flat. I like the owner, he's a nice guy, but i feel he needs to get his game face on. Three brewpubs have closed. No mercy. Currently, I feel no need to come back for only two beers.
google avatar

Yelp
I want to like Threshold and want them to be successful but just can't get behind them. Entire house tap list is IPAs and stouts. If you don't like those styles, there are other better places to check out. Including blending in your name sort of implies barrel aged beers and there have been none on my two visits about 4 months apart. Their clear IPAs finish very sweet, their hazy IPAs are have actually finished drier-tasting with none of the juicy kind of flavor/mouthfeel one would expect when they are labeled NE IPA. Imperial stout was super, super, roasty, out of style. I'll probably come back in a year to see if they have upped their game, until then there are lots of places near and far to hit instead.

Yelp
My husband and I love this brewery. The beer is so good and the atmosphere is chill. Also, they are dog and kid friendly!

Yelp
First sip, i'm in love! My hubby and I were in the area cuz we ran at mount tabor then went to over & out for food afterwards. I've been following the brewery on instagram for awhile and have been waiting for them to open! Their beers have surpassed all of my expectations, very well done!!
google avatar

Rani R.

Yelp
Awesome beer and it was nice for them to provide seating that are 6ft apart both indoor and outdoor. Staff was really nice too
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
Just updating to say that Threshold's latest hazy IPAs are now among Portland's finest, IMHO: both Schwing! and Green Prophecies are most delicious. And unlike my earlier pre-pandemic visit, they are pretty much canning everything they make. So you may find their cans at Belmont Station, New Seasons, or Green Zebra. Great little spot that seems both neighborhood-y and world-class at the same time.
google avatar

Kelly R.

Yelp
Great brewery with awesome beer! Here are some of its amenities: Dogs allowed- outside only Kids allowed- games and chalkboard to keep them company Fun- yoga: last Saturday of the month/ foosball Food- outside food welcome Ambiance- bright and loud Vibe- chill, friendly, low key Staff- very friendly and welcoming Neighborhood- heart of Montavilla Beer- IPA focused and delicious

Yelp
I'm not a fan of IPA but I'll be damned if I don't LOVE their Viscid Dreams! Beautiful day, great space. Munched a cheese platter while enjoying great beer. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Tevvy H.

Yelp
Great spot! Friendly staff, calm atmosphere, super baby friendly with a play area and a great changing station. Delicious snacks and encouraging of bringing in outside food from one of the many places around. Glad they had at least one non-IPA, non-stout beer on tap for the 5 percenters and lager lovers (‍). Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Service is friendly, drinks are reasonably priced, and they have a fun kids play area! You can bring your own snacks, order local delivery, or they often have "visiting" food trucks or pop ups. They also have some lights snacks (cheeses, pretzels, etc) available. Love that it's family friendly and will be back.
google avatar

Ole L.

Yelp
Cool little nice hole in the wall. I plan to bring some staff here soon to try it out. The beer I had was very tasty, I sat at the bar and watched the blazers. For the area, I recommend it. There really isn't a brewery in the remote area, other then the beer bunker.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Awesome, kid friendly, independent brewery! Knowledgeable & passionate staff working the counter too. Was happy to be encouraged to bring in outside food to round out our experience. Divine!! Killer beer!
google avatar

Stephen P.

Yelp
Great service and great beer. I really enjoyed the day runner IPA. The Day Runner IPA was very lite and refreshing. All of their beer was good, the Fuzz Face was very bitter and delicious.

Yelp
Great and inviting. Great beer and nice owner. Happy this is in our hood.

Yelp
So glad that there's finally a family friendly microbrewery in our neighborhood that allows minors. Kombucha for my 8 yr old boy and a nice IPA for me without being surrounded by all the hipster douché-baggery you would normally find in the 21 and over microbreweries in Portland. They even had a play area for kids! I recommend highly and their beers - although they only have a relatively small selection, they are however surprisingly tasty and exceeded my expectations. Brewed right there on the spot they have 7 house beers on tap currently and a handful of guest beverages from Phriem and others serving beer, wine and kombucha. I had their Night Porter- a NE style IPA made with Chinook and Simcoe hops(7% alcohol) and their Roma Coffee stout was very good. One of the best things about this place is that you can bring in your own food! Make something at home, bring it in and enjoy it there or there are also food trucks nearby. They have a big screen for Timbers, Blazers and major sporting events, etc. They have a garage door that they open up on nice weather days making it a nice spot to sit there and enjoy the beautiful weather while enjoying your tasty beverages.

Tara J.

Yelp
Portland is the land of plenty when it comes to beer, but Threshold stands out, even in a hood surrounded by more established spots. Threshold opened up in our neighborhood in January, and surprised us with IPAs that were amazing from day one, though everything they brew is expertly crafted, from their Grisette to their Stout. The brewers have seemingly gone from a home brew operation to full fledged brewery without a hitch! The whole operation is a labor of love by two couples, each of whom work the bar in addition to being normal working stiffs and parents, respectively. The vibe is family friendly with a play area for the kiddos. Some snacks available and outside food encouraged.
google avatar

Nathan H.

Yelp
Place is awesome! Amazing beer and super cool folks running the place. Great addition to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Seth P.

Yelp
Great new brewery in the neighborhood. Some great crisp IPAs. All I a very well remodeled old auto shop.

Hayley D.

Yelp
They definitely hit the ground running! Beers are so flavorful, fun atmosphere, and you are able to order food from the wonderful establishments in Montavilla and bring it in. What a welcome addition to the neighborhood! Go check out this new Montavilla gem.

Love The East Sid E.

Yelp
Delicious beers, especially the Fuzz Face IPA which is one of my favorite in town. Also, the staff are super friendly and the place is kid friendly with lots of games and plenty of natural light. It's a really pleasant place to hang out or work. It's a great additional to the neighborhood!

Daniel D.

Yelp
I had a great experience here. The two guys behind the counter were very friendly and conversational. The beer was excellent and the space had a warm ascetic with the walls and chairs covered in wood. Great spot!

Garrett P.

Yelp
Reeeeeally love this place. For being such a new establishment it's insane the caliber of beers they are brewing. So far everything is top notch and the staff is somehow even better. An extremely welcome addition to the neighborhood and a family friendly place that we are excited to become regulars at.. ok we are already regulars.
