Com Tam Thuan Kieu Review - Westminster - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Plain and simple, Com Tam Thuan Kieu’s broken rice platter is the best value in Little Saigon. Located in a strip mall right on Bolsa Ave., this low-key spot doesn’t have the big crowds or high energy of some of the surrounding restaurants, and that’s exactly what we like about it. This is the kind of place you come to after a long day, sit in blissful silence, and eat an $11.99 platter of broken rice (fractured rice grains) topped with seven different items that range from grilled pork to egg rolls to tofu shrimp paste. But perhaps the best thing about a meal at Com Tam is the fact you’ll have leftovers tomorrow. Cash only." - Brant Cox

The two people portion is still a lot for two. Definitely worth the price. The rice dish is very good too. Service is quick.

First of, the photos on the wall and the lamps, decor give a very Vietnamese cozy aesthetic. Food was very good. Is it the best Vietnamese food ever? No. But it did hit the spot. Drinks like Thai Tea- not so much. I did order canh chua which is a very homey dish and they did well. What I don’t like is they don’t Devine the shrimp! Don’t rush this step it’s important to take the poop sack out! For a high end feel to this restaurant I would like to see them try harder to not take the quick way out.

There are so many great restaurants in Houston, but somehow we always end up eating here when we’re in Houston. Food is seasoned to our taste, and the prices are reasonable. Love their Canh chua cá kho tộ.

Google
Originally I thought negative of the place because when we arrived, we were told there was a new owner and that they no longer sold banh beo. I ordered the 4 Family Combo deal for around $70. The food was great and came very fast. As we came around 11am there wasn’t a lot of people, but it got crowded pretty fast after we were seated. The waiters were very nice and the atmosphere was great.

Google
Probably the best Vietnamese food in Houston. We tried a little of everything. Highly recommended.

Google
The bahn xiau was sooo good and fresh and big. I loved it and ate almost the whole thing. Would recommend for sure!

Google
The restaurant has very good service, has full range of Vietnamese dishes ,the staff is very happy. I highly recommend trying the BROKEN RICE at the restaurant. Especially, the restaurant can also order online, very convenient.

Google
The food was so delicious and the staffs provided great customer service! I highly recommend for authentic Vietnamese cuisine! Great restaurant and will come back!

Yelp
The ca kho here as recommended by many others was excellent! It is a bit on the sweeter end but was so well seasoned. There were pieces of fried pork fat in there which brought out the flavor even more, I couldn't stop eating it. So perfect to enjoy with a side of rice. The com tam/broken rice dish was so fragrant! The pork was perfectly cooked, had the aromatic charcoal scent like I remember from my childhood in Vietnam :') the only negative I would comment on was that the pork could be a bit saltier/more flavorful, it was just a tad bit plain. Fish sauce was perfect. My hubby ate all the Banh cuon and enjoyed it. Decent service, we mostly had to grab all the to-go boxes ourselves. Casual spot.

Yelp
Solid, affordable spot for com tam (Vietnamese broken rice)! The dish comes with a lot of food!

Yelp
A bit underwhelming with my selections. I ordered the banh khot ($12) and banh hoi bo nuong ($14). Serving sizes were less than average comparable to other Vietnamese restaurants here in Houston. The Banh khot were really thick and not crisp however the shrimp were big for the size of the banh khot. The banh hoi seemed to be missing some of the traditional green onion oil and the grilled beef lacked flavor. The traditional dipping sauce (nuoc cham) lacked some depth but adding about 3 scoops of the garlic chili paste on the table made it better. The plus side to eating here is that they provided an abundance of veggies which I always prefer. I've been here before for their com tam and their canh which both are amazing and I would highly recommend those dishes above these.

Yelp
I am very very very picky with Vietnamese food, I grew up just eating Vietnamese cuisine and I won't lie this place is legit. A bunch of natives were eating here so you know it's authentic. The pho was amazing and perfectly seasoned. The cafe su da was so strong but delicious. Great customer service, I even got to practice my Vietnamese. Definitely will be back again.

Yelp
We've been to Thuan Kieu for years, ever since I was just a little girl. Their com tam and family style meals are so comforting and makes for an effortless lunch or dinner. The place is way nicer now after the renovations Com tam is always good, although I feel like the pork chops got smaller. Their dinner packages feature comfort entrees like ca kho, canh chua, rau muong, etc. they have packages ranging from families of 4 through like 12 I believe. Service was decent enough and we didn't have any issues, which says a lot for a restaurant on Bellaire. Anyway. This is a family staple and we'll keep coming back.

Yelp
Food is always great here! This time we ordered Com Phần for 3. This combo includes goi, cả kho tộ, canh chua, black bean mussels, and ga hai nam. The service is quick! Don't expect the extra friendly service here, true Vietnamese service isn't American friendly lol the newly decorated interior is super cute! Gives you modern Vietnam vibes. I also ordered soda Chan mươi which was delicious!!!

Yelp
Pros: Food here is decent, quite a lot of options. Our family had different variety of com tam (broken rice), with different types of proteins. The plate itself is filling with plenty of veggies and good amount of servings of protein and rice. The amount of fish sauce is adequate with spicy peppers on the table to add to taste. Other dishes that walked by looked great, bird's nest and chicken plates. Rice plates are serve with a bowl of soup on the side. It's a normal restaurant, well-decorated and clean from what we can see. Cons: usually I will go anywhere and deal with quite a lot if the food is worth it. This is my first time here and likely the last, simply for incompetent service. A waitress took our order and brought out utensils and soup bowls. Then, nothing. For 40 mins, we sat there just entertaining the hungry toddlers with us. That wait time isn't an estimate, I took a picture of menu and restaurant when we first sat down so very much exact. We finally asked another staff there, apparently our order was never even placed. The other waiter did promise to expedite our order and indeed, food came out in under 5 mins which made it even more frustrating that we waited all that time without even water on our table (had to ask for it separately mid meal) and our orders not making it to the kitchen. As you can see, restaurant wasn't max capacity for there to be an issue with our orders making it to the kitchen. There are enough options in Bellaire to skip risking bad service in my opinion.

Yelp
We drove down from San Antonio to check out this place that was highly recommended by several of my clients. It's well worth the drive and my favorite was the muscles. The catfish was amazing too along with the salad. You will get a bang for your buck with the family meal.

Yelp
Bustling restaurant in the Vietnamese community with a diverse menu that doesn't just contain on broken rice (com tam). Quick service and delicious food, for very fair prices. Very happy with the grilled pork broken rice dish (C8)
google avatar

Thanh T.

Yelp
Takes a lot for me to write a bad review. This place fell off big time. 3 pieces of meat for my rice plate and bug in lettuce calls for a negative review lol.
google avatar

Alain T.

Yelp
The floor was greasy and littered with food scraps from other tables. I almost slipped twice walking to the table. Service was non existent and they also forgot my enter. I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like based on the dirty floor.
google avatar

Alyson W.

Yelp
My experience here was very underwhelming. Most of the food was salty and the soup that came with the rice entrees had a bad aftertaste and gave my son a stomach ache. Additionally, we came in at 8:30 pm and the people in the kitchen came out and yelled at us that we shouldn't have come in so late. Never coming back!

Yelp
I reviewed this place about 13 years ago and I gave it 5 stars then. Thought I'd revisit and I have to say it has held up to the test of time. The clay pot catfish is still one of favorites in the city and that alone is enough for me to keep it among the top of my places in Asiatown. It definitely has gone through some renovations since I last ate here too adding for a nicer ambience. Overall, I was really happy with my meal with A+ to the catfish, as well as the banh hoi dac biet dish, and the nem nuong. I should come back more often.
google avatar

Berny N.

Yelp
This is an honest review. Aesthetics of the place doesn't make up for the lack of taste and service we had. We can see that a big Sunday brunch wave wasn't something the staff could handle. We weren't given our waters until the end of the whole meal and no knifes were given for the pork chop after asking 3-4x on both the waters and utensils. Oh how the great have fallen. Nostalgia didn't hit on this one--been going here since I was young. Maybe new management ‍

Yelp
There's a huge menu, kind of felt like Cheesecake Factory with Vietnamese food. The appetizer sampler was good but the shrimp was not deveined and it came out kind of cold. Forgot what the lemongrass meat sampler is called but everything including the pork came out cold. Flavorful, but cold, so it was disappointing. The clay pot fish was my favorite. Right amount of flavor and cooked so tender. The pho house special was okay. I prefer the thinner noodles but the broth was decent. The fried tofu was pretty good and not too salty. Would come back. Service was decent. Draft made it freezing the whole time so was unpleasant sitting there.

Abby L.

Yelp
Spacious spot for big groups for Vietnamese food. The music was too loud in my opinion making us have to speak louder but the rest of the atmosphere was nice, calm, and clean. Service was alright. We are in town visiting and I've missed real and good Vietnamese food so it checked the boxes for me. We got hot tea, C2 a breakfast plate, egg rolls, and spring rolls with nem nướng. Overall yummy and everything came out warm and quickly.
google avatar

Anwyn N.

Yelp
The food here is a solid 7/10. However, I didn't like the fact that the spring rolls are pre-made, so if you order them without a specific ingredient, they can't accommodate the request and just serve the pre-made ones. That aside, the food is good, and I would recommend this place for Vietnamese cuisine. The prices aren't too expensive, and the service is very friendly!

Vy N.

Yelp
I love spring rolls and this place makes good spring rolls. Their peanut sauce was thick and really flavorful. I love how big each of the spring rolls were. The lady serving our table was kind and asked if everyone had gotten their orders. The place was crowded with tables and it was bright inside due to the large window.
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
My go-to spot for Nem rolls! I know this place is known for their rice plates but I always just come for the Nem rolls. They come in 4s with the dipping sauce and I honestly just eat them as an entree sometimes. I find them to be a great snack on the go especially when I know I have a long car ride coming up. This time around I dined in and ate them with a friend. The restaurant itself is huge and has tons of seating. We went at a weird hour between late lunch and early dinner so there were not many people there. The service is great and quick! Definitely give this place a try if you are in the area!
google avatar

Vicky B.

Yelp
this is one of my new favorite places that makes caramelized catfish (ca kho to) the best! I definitely enjoyed all the food we ordered. Came here with my dad and his friends (4 of us in total) and ordered dinner for 3 and it came with 5 dishes and rice. Service is fairly quick as they have a specific menu and overall most things were good. There were some things that we had that just didn't fit the flavor that I liked but that's a personal preference. Great place for family style dinner or individual meal! Pricing is good as well!
google avatar

Kayla N.

Yelp
I'm updating my review based on recent visits. The traditional Vietnamese foods are decent overall. They remodeled the restaurant so the dining room looks neater and cleaner. The times we ate here during lunch service are great (attentive, get us refills when asked, and so on).
google avatar

Carol C.

Yelp
This place is PACKED. Be prepared to wait or try to squeeze in because there doesn't seem to be much order since all the staff were very busy. Once seated, the waiters were very quick and attentive. The food came out quick and was very delicious! The beef was tender and nicely seasoned. The soup that came with the rice dishes were good but I wished it had more of a buttery flavor.

Jamie M.

Yelp
Though food is decent and restaurant overall looks nice(though it's really really loud) the service takes forever...and our server wasn't even nice. How are other tables being served food that came and ordered after us?? Def not worth the trouble of coming here. Hire another chef?

Kim Chi S.

Yelp
I wouldn't come back or recommend to anyone for: 1. Grilled meat is very dry ( thịt nướng khô và nêm nếm không được ngon) 2. All the drink is tasteless even ice coffee ( Cà phê và trà trân châu rất lạc lõng) 3. Roach crawled over my niece's feet. 4. Table is not clean. ( Bàn ăn rất dơ và thậm chí có gián bò qua chân của đứa cháu) Rất thất vọng

Joseph N.

Yelp
This place used to be good Probably new owners Took my family here 8/19/24 for after church brunch. Roaches crawling around table and baby roach in our rice bowl. Food seems like leftover from night before. It was damn hot in there. It took them 20 minutes to get partial drinks. Missing some drinks. Order got messed up 3 times. Never going back to this establishment again
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
No frills, authentic Vietnamese restaurant. I've heard about this place for years from family members and was craving com tam, so I figured I'd give this place a try! They offer a huge selection of com tam dishes with different combos of meat and sides, but also a lot of comfort Vietnamese dishes. I opted for a grilled pork com tam, while my boyfriend got the Ca Kho to, and both dishes were delicious. We'll definitely come back when we're in the mood for Viet comfort food.

Carlos O.

Yelp
Went to try new restaurant order food egg rolls looked double fried. And the food was Luke warm we saw French roaches crawling on the person chair next to us. We saw two on the table and two on the floor and one dead one. This place is nasty roaches every where CAUTION do risk you health eating there! It's looks good from the out side but lots of bad things inside this place need to be closed for health reasons!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Our friends recommend us to come here when we visit Houston so we immediately stopped by after we landed in Houston. I have to say the food is amazing! We ordered the com tam suon, bi , cha and com tam đặc biệt, the foods came out really quick around 10 mins, and the service is superb. The waiters/ waitress always check up on us and made sure we have everything. When the foods are delicious with a lot of mo hanh, the fish sauce is not overly sweet, and the meats are tender and flavorful. Also, they are super cheap, only $12.99 for a special combo???? This is crazy! I highly recommend this place for everyone who want good com tam.

Yelp
I used to go here pretty often and still do at least once a month but have noticed a slight decline in quality. Here are my recommendations: Cơm tắm #1 and #2 were my go to's since they included quite a bit of variety (either beef or grilled pork, egg quiche thingy, veggies, shrimp, fried shrimp dim sum like item wrapped in tofu, sugar cane grilled shrimp dim sum thingy, Chinese sausage, etc). Amazing variety but the pricing has gone up a bit at around $13 per box. I'd still eat this though and don't mind the price every so often. Cơm phần for 2 people: Includes clay pot fish, sweet and sour soup, Hainan chicken, and gỏi (salad). 4 items for around $30. Quite the steal right? Not exactly... I used to love this combo but lately, I've noticed that the quality of the gỏi isn't so fresh anymore! Pros: Sweet and sour soup still delivers. Amazing, robust flavor. Please don't ever change the recipe. Clay pot fish has the same punch of flavor and is cooked with mini lard chunks which undoubtedly why it tastes so great. My only complaint here is the texture of the catfish. Why does it have the firmness of pork chops??? Fish isn't supposed to be that firm unless you overload it with alum which is a bit disturbing. If only they just cook it normally and leave the fish be! Cons: No more crispy veggie salad. Just soggy and flat. The chicken is the most disappointing part. At first bite, it is already soggy. I can't even finish it and have to throw it out. Hainan chicken is supposed to be free range, firm meat and the skin is supposed to have a resilient, gelatinous texture. They used to deliver but what happened??? I thought this was a one time thing but after ordering this combo for another 2 times, same poor quality consistency! Perhaps it's the storage method or them pouring the green onion and oil sauce all over the chicken days before serving it?! Who knows but the chicken is such a turn off. Overall, I used to love eating here but the alterations in quality has made me lean away from cơm phần . If only the quality went back to the way it used to be.

Yelp
Hubby asked 2 of our Vietnamese friends for recommendations on where to eat banh xeo. They both said this one so that's where we went! And one of them recommended rice plates (the "broken rice" options on the menu) Their banh xeo is super crispy and was huge. Plenty to share. We got the C10 pork chop broken rice plate. It was good! Next time I'd try a different one instead of the pork chop one.
google avatar

Kat T.

Yelp
We ordered broken rice dish from Thuan Kieu. The dish is really well made. Just be sure to speak clearly when called!!
google avatar

Diem A.

Yelp
I had low expectations from the start. The service was as expected - pretty poor. We sat for at least 5 minutes before even being brought menus. We had to ask for things about 5 times. The food was decent. The Rao muong dish was sweet which was unexpected and weird. The thit kho tieu was ok but I've had better. The canh chua tom was served on a gas burner and was pretty good. The banh khot was pretty good as well.
google avatar

Chelle N.

Yelp
Dined in at 7:40 pm and ordered the com phan 5 nguoi ( family meal for 5). The best dish was the ca kho to and canh chua ca. Their banh kot was horrible. Everything was very oily.
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
I've been here several times with my family, and I used to not really be a fan of this place because of the service. However, after the remodel, I think the service has gotten a lot better. I was very pleased the last time I came here. This is a very solid authentic Vietnamese restaurant, and it's perfect to come here with a family or a big group. The tables are structured basically for family style. The remodel looks INCREDIBLE. I felt like I was in Vietnam. I recommend getting one of the "com phan" options. My family and I usually get either the "com phan 5 nguoi" or "com phan 6 nguoi." Their "lau chua ca bong lau (hot & sour catfish hotpot)" is honestly one of the best I've had. The broth is perfectly sweet and flavorful. You won't feel heavy after eating it, and it's so authentic. The "dau hu don thit (stuffed tofu)" is also really good and flavorful too. The tofu is marinated really well with tomatoes and the sauce that comes with it. Their "goi ngo sen (lotus root salad)" is also really good too. I love how there were just so many different options included, and you really do get your money's worth. The portions are generous and everything is so flavorful to perfection. I felt super full after eating here, but did not feel disgusting or heavy from it. It honestly felt pretty healthy but delicious. If you're looking for authentic Vietnamese food in the Bellaire area, definitely come here to try one of these dishes!

Yelp
Đồ ăn không ngon, mình kêu món lẩu quá dỡ, phở bưng ra cũng có cán đề, mình sẽ không trở lại lần nữa.!
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
I always have a bit of nostalgia for this place. Their com tam is great and portion is decent for the price. We came here for years for their com phan including goi, ca kho to, ga qui phi, etc but the quality seemed to decline a bit slowly as their food got saltier/sweeter. The crowd dining over the years has definitely died down and not many people come anymore. Still a Vietnamese staple in Houston in my eyes though but definitely needs to keep improving their recipes.

Yelp
the sign is really big, you can't miss this place. Decided to try something new! Ban xeo: three words - MASSIVE. CRISPY. DELICIOUS. As someone who isn't overly fond of coconut flavor things, I could tell they used some coconut milk for the batter and I didn't hate it. I actually really enjoyed it. The plate came and I was speechless. There's a lot of bean sprouts with scattered pieces of pork belly, shrimp, and onions. The batter was the winner, and it paired so well with the fish sauce. You end up just dousing it, that good. They provide another plate of lettuce for wrapping, pickled daikon, and other various leaves. Must get and perfect for sharing. Banh canh: also pretty big portion. The shrimp and meat cakes were rly good in it and the broth was thick and hot which I liked, it also had pieces of crab! Noodles are thick, and it comes with mushrooms and fatty slices of meat. Add some hot chili, adds a nice flavor! Spare ribs in clay pot: ordered this bc we saw a review about it. The clay pot keeps the food hot so be warned, especially when trying to get the meat off the bones. The flavor is rich and very umami, eat with rice!
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
Rice plates are the ones you want to try if it's your first time. There are a lot of different combinations and something for everyone. We also got the bahn xeo which was good. Super crispy and huge!
google avatar

Linh N.

Yelp
I came to Houston with my family for the weekend. Com phần was delish! I would totally come back.
google avatar

Charlynne A.

Yelp
Honestly, this resturant is significantly under rated. It's hard to find good, authentic, and delicious asian food here in Texas. So my husband and I always try to make a trip to Houston when we can because thier Vietnamese/Chinese food here reminds us so much like Westminster in Cali! Definitely come here if you are craving authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Their Banh Xeo is phenomenal. It's considered an appetizer, but it will fill you up. Their Banh Beo is also a yummy appetizer. Also, all their rice entrees are worth a try. The sauces they pair your plate complete the taste of the dish. Definitely will be coming here again!

Ivy N.

Yelp
I like their cá kho tộ and chem chép xào lá quế. I've been coming to this place for years and the food is so good. It's really nice inside too, especially on regular days when it's not too crowded.

Peter L.

Yelp
I ordered from Uber-Eats. I ordered one item and received another which is completely different. One time only, no more!
google avatar

Brandon T.

Yelp
Food was mediocre and so was the service. Also had hair in our fish sauce. Don't ever eat here
google avatar

Matthew T.

Yelp
Honestly one of the best broken rice plate places I know in houston. Always recommending to my friends when they visit the city and craving rice plates.

Katy T.

Yelp
google avatar

Ciara N.

Yelp
Come here for the (chao Tom)shrimp paste spring rolls. It has the crunchy fried rolled up egg roll paper on the inside. I also like the sauce that comes with it. I came here out of the blue and it was sooo good! I can't wait to come here again. I highly recommend this place. It's so good! I've actually recommended this place to one of my friends as a suggestion for her graduation party food just got the shrimp paste rolls. Yummmmmm
google avatar

Pauline P.

Yelp
Was looking for the best com tam in H-town and was directed to Thuan Kieu. It wasn't bad but definitely not the best. To be fair, I had the best com tam of my life in San Jose, CA so I had really high expectations coming here seeing as Houston is Vietnamese central. We got the Com Tam Dac Biet A and Dac Biet B (special combination plate A and B) so we could try a bit of everything. The grilled beef had a decent flavor but came out cold. The grilled pork chop had just an ok flavor but at least it wasn't dry. The egg cake was pretty good! Every other component (egg roll, grilled shrimp, lap xuong, etc) in the rice dishes were either really average or slightly better than average. They do give you a side of fresh veggies AND pickled veggies so that is nice.
google avatar

Lucy T.

Yelp
My go-to place for cm tắm and nem nớng cuốn! It's definitely my childhood! Atmosphere (3/5): Nothing special tbh, large space, cashier counter in the front, hostess booth, chairs, and table like other Vietnamese restaurants. Sometimes the tables are sticky; sometimes, the place smells like bleach. Service (4/5): "Hello, how many?" You get seated, order, get your food, drinks refilled, go to the cashier, and pay--nothing more to it. Food (5/5): My usual and recommended are the cm tắm, cm chiên bò lúc lắc, and Nem nớng cuốn. They never failed me before. The fish sauce is on the sweeter side, so I even it out with garlic chili and Sriracha. With my last order, I got the Bánh xèo. Although it seems thick, it's full of bean sprouts, lol. I would order it again, though.

Yelp
bad service and very rude. the canh chua fish was old fish and vegetables bad too, smell . i came back, they gave me another one but the owner unprofessional explain about old fish. Never come back again!
