18 Best Chinese and Taiwanese Dumplings to Eat in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Be sure to watch Thumbling’s dumpling makers encased in a glass room. The dumplings here are all top-tier, but the pork siu mai, xiao long bao, and pan-fried chicken bun are the best." - Mona Holmes

I've been hearing really good things about this local dumpling spot but I just thought it was ok. It wasn't bad but maybe my expectations were set too high. I went solo and was only able to try 2 dishes....the green onion scallion pancake and the spicy shrimp and pork dumplings plus a side of Hong Kong egg noodles. Everything was good but not amazing. Service is quick and fast too. All ordering is done with the QR code on the table. The scallion pancake was thin and crispy, no overly oil served with a soy garlic sauce. The wontons were mild and not too spicy. There were some decent pieces of shrimp inside too. I will say that everything is made fresh...you can sit at the bar and watch them hand make the dumplings! That was the best part for me was watching them in action.

Google
This is a very popular place, and I often see a line outside of this restaurant. I got here at around 1630, and line was not long. They have their waitlist system that is similar to Yelp waitlist. I was seated promptly. We ordered a spicy wonton with shrimp and pork, BBQ pork bun, and beef pan fried udon with black pepper sauce. I was disappointed. The spicy wonton was not spicy, and it is the best dish within the 3. The BBQ pork bun had lack of flavor. The beef udon only had a little bit of beef in it, and the black pepper overpowered all the taste! The taste to me seemed to be Americanized. Probably will not return.

I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while now. It was definitely worth the wait. So many of the dishes I ordered felt like comfort food. Some items were a bit bland and others were excellent, but their dipping sauce made up for it. They don’t have the biggest menu, the upside to that is things come out fast. Parking gets really crowded here and there can be a wait. It felt like tables were a bit squished together, so I didn’t bother getting up to look for the bathroom. All in all, I was happy with the food and my experience there. They do serve boba as well.

Google
The restaurant is on the small side and it's very noisy inside. We didn't have to wait long for a table but ended up sitting at the counter. A table would have been much better and preferred and I regret not waiting for a table. I would not recommend sitting at the counter. We ordered five dishes and we had to keep passing food back and forth for the two of us. The food is pretty good. The soup dumpling is delicious, the noodle dish was very good, the wonton was okay, the chashu bao was alright and the squid was tasty. I have had better chashu bao and better wontons but overall the food was good. Parking was crowded but we found parking and had to walk a little ways. We spent over $80 including tax and tip for 2 people but had plenty of leftovers. It is a popular restaurant and as we left there was a bunch of people waiting. Everything is done with your cell phone which includes putting your name on a wait-list and ordering your food.

Google
The hype is real. We were recommended to try Thumbling by a few friends/family members, and are so glad we finally got to try it! The beef roll, pan fried pork/shrimp dumplings and pork/crab roe soup dumplings were my favorites followed by the garlic spinach and beef stir fry udon noodles. The food quality and service was excellent. I can see why it’s so packed here especially on the weekend during lunchtime. But the weight wasn’t too bad even though we arrived around 12:45pm. We still ate by 1:30pm.

Google
First time visiting thumbling and loved it. I recommend the pan fried dumplings, beef udon, green beans sauté perfectly. Parking a little challenging but because this is a popular place plus is surrounded by other restaurants. Definitely recommend 👌

Google
I was craving dumplings and this spot was around the corner. It’s a solid spot for lunch. I ordered the pork and fried rice salt pepper squid, beef noodle soup and dumplings, followed with their milk tea. All were pretty good with the calamari being my favorite. Overall descent dining experience a great dumpling spot. I’d definitely come back here again and try their other menu spot. This place gets busy, it was already full by the time it opened.

Google
I really like the peach green tea, beef udon, and braised beef noodle soup. The pork bun was better than expected. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the soup dumpling. The food came out right away.

Yelp
I'm honestly surprised I haven't written a review for Thumbling yet. I started coming here shortly after COVID, and it quickly became a favorite. Honestly, it might be the closest thing to Din Tai Fung, maybe even better. My friends and I have probably eaten here over 50 times by now. Yes, it gets busy, and yes, there's usually a wait on weekends, but it's 100% worth it. The staff is friendly and quick, and the food always hits the spot. Our go-tos are definitely the xiao long bao, pork and corn dumplings, beef wrap roll, shrimp fried rice, rice cakes, and sweet and sour pork. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. They have regular and bar seating, and both the wait times and prices are pretty reasonable. Everyone loves Thumbling.

Yelp
finally got a chance to stop by. xlb was yummy and actually had a spoon full of soup. def a favorite shrimp udon was okay, probably wouldn't order again bokchoy was decent l, refreshing on a hot day shrimp wontons were loved by my friends and we also ordered the beef noodle soup. it was good but i have had better. the noodles had a good chew and i do appreciate the extra bokchoy compared to other restaurants. the tables were so small, we couldn't fit everything we orderedi will say its not as cost friendly as pp pop in mpk though.

Yelp
Overall, a really solid restaurant. It was pretty packed on a Monday at 8pm, but the wait was only around 15-20 minutes. The tables are a little close together (at least where we sat), but the service was quick. The total cost was $80. We also got the milk tea and Thai iced tea. Both drinks were good, but nothing special. Pork Xiao Long Bao - Juicy and decently sized. They were flavorful with a good amount of filling, and arrived hot and steamy at the table. I was able to finish all of them myself, but they're definitely shareable. Spicy Pork Xiao Long Bao - Pretty much the same as the regular ones, just with a kick of spice. My spice tolerance isn't very high, so I found them a bit spicy. I'd say it was probably slightly above mild. Chicken Egg Fried Rice - Note: the photo I attached was taken after I already served some. It comes in a good portion. Tasty and simple in flavor. Not anything spectacular, but I'd still recommend it. Pork Fried Dumplings - Pretty good. Crispy on the outside with a nice filling. I'm not the biggest fan of fried dumplings, so my opinion's a bit biased. Overall, a nice spot for a quick meal with friends or family!

Yelp
The food was good but it's not amazing they have a pretty simple menu. Noodles with shrimp or noodles with beef same flavor they just change the protein. Spicy wings are pretty standard maybe a little too fried and the onion pancake was like three sheets of paper. For the area they might be one of the only places like this one ,it's a Taiwanese /Shanghainese infusion. I have had better. Because we were a party of two and it was quite busy there was no option to wait for a table. Flora almost yelled at me when I insisted on waiting for a table. Unfortunately I interacted with her for more than just the host and Flora was awful. From the moment we came in she made my visit unpleasant. She was rude to us,other patrons and she was a bully to her fellow workers. I hope she was just having a bad day and this isn't an everyday experience!

Yelp
Went to Thumbling on a Sunday evening. The wait for two wasn't bad, even though there were a few people ahead of us. We got seated fairly quickly and ordered a few dishes. Everything was flavorful and good, but nothing really stood out. We tried the garlic string beans, pork buns, fried rice, cucumber salad, and the braised noodle soup. The place was crowded, and the staff was attentive but it did start to feel like they were rushing people out because of the long lines outside. Toward the end of our meal, we slowed down a bit to chat, and noticed a few servers hovering. Within about three minutes, at least three different staff members were eyeing our table with their iPads, whispering and pointing like we were supposed to be done. It definitely felt like they were waiting for us to leave, which made the end of the meal uncomfortable. I get that they're trying to keep the line moving and avoid long wait times, but it still made us feel rushed and that took away from the experience a bit. The place had nice lighting and lots of seating, ambience was good.

Yelp
I did a walk up for two. You have to get on the waitlist by scanning the QR code outside. They were quick to seat us. I ordered the sautéed string beans and garlic, spicy pork wontons, spicy noodles, spicy beef udon, pork bao. My personal favorites were the spicy beef udon and spicy pork wontons. Of all the spicy food items the spicy beef udon had the least amount of heat but it had great taste and there isn't anything comparable offered at some other similar places. They have some seating in high chairs that faces a frosted glass window. You are facing away from the rest of the restaurant so you don't see anything the whole time.

Yelp
Before I review, I want to tell everyone to sign up using the QR code before you go. The QR code can be found on yelp menu picture section. You take a screenshot and long tap to access it. There's always a line. -------------------------------- I have been here three times now and every time the food has been consistent. Served hot and fresh and the price is very good. We spent $130 after tips and taxes for 5 adults this time. Things we ordered and evaluations: 1. Sesame noodle: Vert rich and flavorful. The noodle could be just a liiiitle more aldente. 2. Fried rice with chicken and shrimp: A staple dish! Shrimp is cooked right and plump. Flavor is there but some people need chili oil that's on the table. 3. Kung pao chicken: this dish is totally slept on! The chicken is fried and cooked in sauce. Veggies are also good. 4. Pork XLB: you cannot miss this. Try not to break the skin! It's so good we ordered twice. 5. Pan fried Dumpling: this was pretty normal. Not bad tho. 6. Green beans: nicely cooked with garlic but it was a little too oily for what it is. 7. Egg drop soup: some people might think this is bland- but this is a nice "taking a break" soup from all the other flavorful food. As an Asian this was something comforting. Service- you will be ordering thru your phone. So not much of interaction with the server. It's good for the business for efficiency but not tip deserving especially when they never ask you how we are doing or checking on the water. We have to ask for water. We still tipped 15% ish. Ambiance- always crowded. Which is good! You know you're at the right place. The condiments and tables can be a little cleaner.

Yelp
This is very similar the DTF. I think it's much better and less than half the price! The food is great! Every dish I've tried has been amazing! My favorites are the beef noodles, spicy XLB, beef roll and the pork short ribs! The service is pretty non existent but that's ok with me I'm not going there for service. You order your food via the QR code at the table and they bring out your dishes. There is no one coming around to ask how your food is or to offer you a dessert menu. It's very informal but delicious! Overall I would recommend! Expect to wait at least 30 mins to be seated. Expect parking will be a little limited. But the food will be amazing! And very reasonably priced!

Yelp
This is my first time here... We ordered online and got our food to go. The beef noodles were okay, but didn't quite hit the mark for me. The noodles themselves had a good texture, not too chewy and not too soft, and the beef and veggies were good but needed for seasoning and flavor. 7/10 Pork chop egg fried rice wasn't too bad but the rice was bland and need more seasoning... but the pork chop was very flavorful so it balanced well 8/10 Kung Pao is good! Chicken is tender while the sauce is a rich in flavor. The portion size is generous. 9/10 Salt and Pepper Calamari were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The seasoning was spot-on--just the right amount of salt and pepper to enhance the flavor without being overpowering. It was light, flavorful and my favorite appetizer! 10/10 The pork dumplings were good and I would suggest eating there Juicy and flavorful! 10/10 Must get taro smoothie ! It's soooo good! 10/10 Overall, it's good!

Yelp
Basically, din tai fung but family style and less... stiff. On a Wednesday night this place was bustling with groups of family, friends, lovers on dates which shows the appeal to anyone and everyone. They also provide various table, booth and high top/bar seating for all the different parties. Now, the food: everything we ordered was so good and hit exactly like you want it to. As a first timer, ordering off the 'most popular' section of the menu did not steer us wrong. The portions are generous. The only thing was that the bottom of the soup dumplings keep sticking to the paper and so the soup would spill out. Sad. Very efficient ordering on your phones at the table and food comes out quickly as well. Free parking in the lot shared with other restaurants and businesses. This might've been my first visit to this area and would definitely come back!

Yelp
I've been going to Thumbling ever since I moved to Covina a few years back, and wow, has it exploded in popularity! I remember the days when we could just stroll in and be seated in 15-20 minutes. Now, you've got to jump on the waitlist, and sometimes you're looking at an hour wait! But hey, good for them! Honestly, they totally deserve it because their dumplings are amazing! The XLB is a must-have. We're also big fans of the pork chop fried rice, those pan-seared steamed chicken buns, and the pork and shrimp chili wontons. So good! Since the wait can be pretty long and the place isn't great for bringing a baby (it can get cramped), we've started ordering takeout. It still tastes just as delicious, so I definitely recommend that if you're not up for waiting forever!

Yelp
I have been coming here for years and the food food used to always be good, but recently seems to be inconsistent. However, food is still good overall. The service is pretty good and food comes in reasonable time even with how packed it is sometimes. The place is pretty spacious and has a lot of seating although still often packed around dinner time

Yelp
First time dining inside Thumbling after ordering to go since they opened. Fast and efficient service and food. Incredibly sweet servers that remained attentive throughout our meal. I always try to order something I haven't tried each time I eat Thumbling and have yet to be disappointed. Thank you for all the deliciousness!

Yelp
In my opinion, this spot is so much better than Din Tai Fung. The menu has so many delicious options, and it's perfect for a family-style meal where everyone can try a bit of everything. My personal favorite is the sweet-and-sour pork ribs. They're packed with flavor and just so fun to eat. You also can't go wrong with the xiao long bao or the spicy wontons. Both always hit the spot. The pork chop fried rice is another must-try, and I love getting the seaweed and bean curd salad as an appetizer for something refreshing. The corn and pork dumplings are so underrated. The texture is amazing, and the flavor combo is surprisingly fantastic. Don't skip the fried green beans either. It's nice to balance out a meal with a veggie, and these are crispy and making eating your greens fun. Service is really fast, and I love how you can conveniently order straight from your phone, with pictures of the menu too.

Yelp
Ordered to go this time and they had everything prepared by the time i got there! my favorites were their pan fried dumplings, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Loved their XLB as well. It was very juicy and still warm when i got home. the beef noodle soup was also yummy along with the beef roll. The fried rice wasn't the best, a bit salty and clumpy. i would still come back again as their price is rlly good and lots of options to choose from!
google avatar

Yelp
Solid Taiwanese restaurant! The beef roll was amazing has an addicting sweet sauce. The pork xiao long bao has a thin and chewy skin so does break easily but delicious nonetheless. The shanghai spicy wonton has good filling and the chili oil/ sauce has a slight sweetness to it which I enjoy. Braised beef noodle soup was solid and has good soup with a hint of spicy flavor. The salted egg custard xiao long bao was amazing. Definitely get it if you like salted egg custard. QR code to join the waitlist and it does get busy on a weekend night. Order was also placed via QR code on the table and comes pretty quick.
google avatar

Maria A.

Yelp
I would give it 4.5 stars if I could! I went on a Friday around 6:30 pm and waited almost an hour and forty minutes. Once we were seated everything moved quickly. All our dishes came out quickly and it took us 30 minutes to eat everything. The only part that was a bit weird was when the staff would stand by us once they saw we were close to finishing to try to clean our table. We ordered the vegetarian egg fried rice, beef roll, cucumbers, and vegetarian fried noodle. All were delicious! The portions of the rice and noodles were big enough to have leftovers for the next day. The inside was packed especially with the staff running around. If the wait was shorter, I would definitely come to eat in again.

Yelp
Tumbling was delicious! Arrived on a Saturday at 1245 and scanned the QR code to put my party of 2 on the wait list. Within 1 min, I got a notification for a table. If you're okay with sitting at the bar, it's a good place to for a party of two! Inside is spacious and tables are for 4-6ppl so sitting at the bar is intimate and cozy. We ordered so many dishes and everything was very good! QR codes again to order making it very easy to add dishes to your existing meal or add to-go orders. Spicy Cucumbers Garlic String Beans Pork Xia Long Bao Shrimp and Pork Wonton Noodle HK style HK Steamed BBQ Pork Buns Lemon Pepper Fried Chicken Wings Drinks come with your choice of amount of sugar and ice. Jasmine Green Tea with jelly and 50% sugar was just the right amount. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I came here with friends to try out their dumplings since one of them said it was better than ding tai fung. We ordered pork boiled dumplings, veggie dumplings, pork XLB, pan fried pork dumplings, and crab XLB. They were all pretty good but the only one that stood out to me was the crab XLB. The flavor and richness was what I was looking for. In order of my favorite to least favorite: crab, pork XLB, pork boiled dumplings, veggie dumplings, pan fried pork dumplings. Overall, the food was within my expectations. I would recommend people to give it a try as I think it is indeed better than ding tai fung in both taste and size. One thing I didn't like though is the lack of air ventilation. It was pretty stuffy inside while we were eating.
google avatar

Katrina N.

Yelp
Whenever I'm craving dumplings, this is the place I like to go. Because of how delicious the food is, there can be a long wait, but it is definitely worth it. Look at the pictures of the food I've posted, and you can see that I've tried a lot of their food here. I have recommended this place to so many of my family and friends and they said it is comparable to Din Tai Fung. It's easy to order here. There is a QR code on your table that you scan and you can order from there. And when your food is ready, they will bring it to you. Great ambience. Great place that's suitable to have lunch or dinner with your friends and even your family. Because they see a lot of people, it can get busy and loud inside. But I think all that really matters is that you enjoy the food they have to offer.
google avatar

Yelp
Parking: Plenty available Ambience: Crowded, busy! Service: Seem possibly understaffed, they forgot / delayed one of my orders, but were quick to rectify it. Friendly! Taste: Got the scallion pancake, dumplings, xiao long bao, noodles, and salted egg custard xiao long boa, all of which were pretty good!
google avatar

Genevieve G.

Yelp
Delicioso but wait time is ridiculous! You can call in order for pick up. I had noodles and soups and I can't remember what else but food was tasty.

Yelp
Thumbling is the best kind of hidden gem--Din Tai Fung-level quality without the insane wait. If you love perfectly executed dumplings, wok-fired flavors, and warm, attentive service, this spot needs to be on your list. We went all in on our order, and every single dish delivered. The beef roll was crispy, flaky, and packed with tender, flavorful beef. The dry scallop and egg white fried rice was delicate yet deeply satisfying, with just the right balance of umami. The sautéed string beans with garlic had that perfect wok-charred crispness, and the shrimp fried rice cake was chewy, rich, and so addictive. Of course, we couldn't pass up the crab roe and pork xiao long bao--silky, soupy, and bursting with flavor. The Shanghai spicy shrimp and pork wontons were pure comfort, swimming in a sauce that had the perfect balance of heat and savoriness. And to end on a sweet note, the salted egg custard buns were absolute perfection--soft, fluffy, and oozing with that rich, sweet-salty filling. For drinks, the royal milk tea with boba was perfectly balanced--not too sweet, with chewy, fresh boba--and the hot jasmine green tea was fragrant and soothing. Service was excellent--fast, friendly, and genuinely attentive. The team made sure we were taken care of without being intrusive. The ambiance is clean, modern, and inviting, making it a perfect spot for anything from a casual meal to a special night out. If you love Din Tai Fung but hate the wait, Thumbling is your new go-to. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Met up with a buddy for lunch, and the parking is pretty rough in this plaza. We did the Xiao long Bao, spicy pork and shrimp wontons, beef roll, and noodles in spicy sauce. Everything was bomb, service was solid, and the place looks clean. Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Aftin J.

Yelp
Expect a wait, best to have someone put your name a good 20-30 minutes in advance to your anticipated meetup time if you're going with a larger party. Interior is clean, lots of foot traffic in and out and expect a loud restaurant. My favorite dish was probably the pork xlb and I really loved the pork chop fried rice and green beans. Huge menu with loads of dishes to choose from. Easy to order all your dishes over the phone and they come out very quickly. Service is prompt and efficient. I definitely see the hype and would love to go back.
google avatar

Jenny Z.

Yelp
This location usually has a really long wait so def recommend joining their waitlist QR code ahead of time. Inside was packed but looked clean. Our table was wiped down with a towel but was soaked with water, I had to use some napkins to dry it off. They have a QR code at each table for self serve ordering. You place your order on the website and wait for your food. I tried their braised beef noodle soup ($15) and shrimp and pork siu mai ($16). Prices were decent and the dishes were pretty solid. The beef noodle soup had 4 good sized tender beef chunks, fresh bok choy, and lots of chewy noodles. The soup was hearty but very oily. The pork siu mai had soup inside and paired well with their vinegar but I thought the shrimp would be in the filling as well not just on top. It did look cute tho! Pretty good experience and would come back when craving Taiwanese food in west co!
google avatar

Jeff T.

Yelp
First time trying after hearing all the hype. The food was solid! Everything tasted delicious. The Braised beef noodle soup was very light in flavor ( I prefer a stronger flavor). Other than my personal preference I enjoyed everything here. The service is fast and attentive. The only drawback was the seating is limited however, they were able to accommodate my family (including a baby). Definitely would like to come back and try some of the other foods. Parking is very limited here so I recommend coming early or during off times.
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
Heavy foot traffic, so expect a wait. Once we were seated, there was a small glitch where a party had moved to another table, so initially the staff brought items to our table that we didn't order. Luckily, they rectified that issue quickly and our actual order was 100% correct. Portions were ample, plenty to share, and food came out really quickly! I loved the pork chop fried rice and the green beans had a perfect crunch while being flavorful. Least favorite dish was the beef roll. Solid dishes all around. Space is a bit tight, but we got a sweet corner table. I'm a little nervous that someone using accessibility equipment would struggle to navigate the space. Would go again.
google avatar

Kay D.

Yelp
Solid spot with a great portion size. never had a problem with service and although it can get busy they are very quick. Pretty diverse range of guest and clean sauce containers!
google avatar

Joy C.

Yelp
Pro tip: send a friend to put your group's name on the wait list. Scan the QR code outside. Considering we were 19th on the list, the wait was 25-30 minutes. Once seated, you will order via a QR code. Then next thing you know the food comes out when it's ready. It was pretty fast. We definitely were satisfied with our order and got a sampling. Out of all the things we ordered I definitely enjoyed the XLB, spicy wonton, and cucumber. But honestly the whole order was great. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Keya S.

Yelp
The food and service are excellent, they need a bigger location as it gets busy and there is always a wait. Overall the food quality and speed of delivery are 10 out of 10. The food is great and the team are on top of all orders. The ordering process using the QR code is great and you can then settle the check easily too. We love coming here, been here 3-4 times this year....we will keep coming.
google avatar

Yelp
This gem came up on my suggestion feed. I am glad it did. But if you go on a Sunday be prepared to wait. Ordering is actually really easy once you are seated and our order came up rather quickly. This is done via a QR code menu. The seating is however not typical dine in. There is a large wrap around counter with bar seating and tables awkwardly placed along high traffic areas so this is definitely not a first date romantic kind of ambiance. Too much going on and open space with too much chatter. Now to the food; we ordered 6 plates for the two of us at just about under 90 bucks. The food was great with some dishes being a first time experience for us. The pork rice cake dish was one of those. While we would have appreciated more meat, the flavors and chewiness of the cakes and veggies was well balanced. My favorite was the garlic green beans, perfectly stir fried with lots of garlic and well salted. The cucumber salad was ok, nothing special about it that stood out. The pork and shrimp dumplings were really meaty and very flavorful. I especially liked the beef roll with fresh cilantro and cucumber it was reminiscent of a spring roll in a chewy rice fried wrap with thin slices of well seasoned beef. The spicy fried chicken side dish was unique with a lingering taste of both heat and what tasted to us a little like cinnamon. Overall, we consider this place a definite do-over with the ample array of additional dishes we hardly scratched the surface.

Yelp
It has been a while since I've been to Thumbling but I have finally returned after a year. First off, they finally have an online waitlist when you arrive. You just scan the QR code and join the waitlist. I got lucky and went on a Monday around 11:30am and got seated right away. We ordered the cucumber salad, pork XLB, spicy pork wonton and beef noodle soup. The skin on the XLB was very fragile and I broke a few pieces. I don't remember it being that thin/fragile but at least it still tasted good. The beef was super tender in the beef noodle soup but this time, the broth was really oily. I love the sauce in the spicy pork wontons and enjoyed every bite of it. I can't wait to come back again!

Yelp
Casual, family-friendly busy restaurant with authentic dimsum on the more expensive side. Make sure to get here when it opens or else you'll likely have to wait for a table. Food came out quickly after we ordered. Beef roll - 8/10 delicious, savory, filling dish that I always get Spicy wonton - 8/10 wonderfully flavored and not too spicy Cucumber salad - 6/10 sweet and vinegary Pan-fried pork dumplings - 8/10 crunchy and savory Spinach with garlic - 7/10 fresh, not too oily, filling Xiao long bao - 7/10 a classic but gets stuck together if not eaten quickly Noodles with spicy sauce - 5/10 flavor was nice, but dish was not that memorable

Yelp
Ding Thai dung dupe in West Covina 10/10 Came here on a Saturday around lunch time! No wait table for my party of 3. Once you're seated you scan a QR code which takes you to a menu with self ordering to your table. Once you order waiters come by to confirm and then food comes out! Everything was delish my favorites were the pan fried chicken dumplings!

Yelp
I was lucky enough to come on a weekday, and there was no wait time. The staff members quickly sat us down in a table. Yelp
On a Saturday morning at 10:20am in early January, my sister and I waited in line to eat here. There were several people waiting too. Luckily we found a parking spot at 10:15am. The parking lot in the shopping center was full at 10:15am. Inside, the lighting is kinda dark and small of tables and booths. Scan the qc barcode and order from the app which was easy. The staff are nice and speak English and good on refill water cups. The beef noodle soup was really good of big chunks of tender beef with umami beef broth. The xlb dumplings was good too. The pan fried round buns was ok. The pan fried dumplings was good but not crazy about the sauce. The place got full by 10:45am. I could see cars circling around for parking from my window view. FYI. Best to come early when they open and to find parking

Yelp
I've been here about 3 times now and have grown to love it. The food is amazing every time and the service is pretty fast. There's always a long time, and you can't join the waitlist until you reach the restaurant, but I think the food is worth it and it's a great dupe to Din Tai Fung. Shrimp fried rice: 5/5 I really liked this dish, it was very comparable to Din Tai Fung's shrimp fried rice. The portion was bigger and came with substantial shrimp which I really appreciated. Overall, delicious! Sautéed String Beans w/ Garlic: 4/5 I liked this dish a lot, it was really flavorful and had a lot of garlic. I wasn't as crispy as DTF's but overall still really good. Shanghai Spicy Wontons: 4/5 These were good, a bit sweet, and the wontons were really big. The pork mix inside the wonton was good, but not the best spicy wontons I've ever had. Pork XLB: 5/5 I loved their XLB! It was so juicy and the dough was silky soft. I'd definitely order those again, and might even prefer it over DTF since the taste is comparable and the portion was more! Chicken Wings: 5/5 So crispy and tender, and the seasoning is excellent. Definitely a dish worth trying. Overall this place is an excellent dupe to DTF, bigger portions and cheaper. I had a great experience dining here and would definitely come again.

Yelp
Fast service and the quality of food was great. The wait at times is long so plan accordingly. The dumplings are a must and taste so fresh.

Yelp
By far one of my favorite dumpling spots. This place never disappoints. All the food is great. Each time I enjoyed this spot when I am in the city it gets better each time. The service is super quick. However the line is packed most days. It is well worth the wait. Definitely consider coming here when it's cold outside. The place is a great in every way.

Yelp
Thumbling is located at The McIntyre Square in West Covina. I have dined here twice now. First time with some of my dear Yelpie friends... party of 8. Second time with my personal dear friends... party of 6. Both dining experiences were amazing. Staff was very pleasant and attentive. Foods were exquisitely delicious and tasty. Must get pork xiao long bao, crab roe & pork xiao long bao, spicy wontons, yellow chives & shrimp, pan fried pork dumplings, sauteed string beans, scallion pancake, and salted egg custard steamed bun. All tasted so very good. Flavors were on point. Some of the dishes were so mouth-watering! You really can't go wrong with any of their items. Btw, be careful with the xiao long bao... the juices can be burning hot! Use the spoon to hold the xiao long bao so the juices don't go to waste as you're biting into one. For my 1st visit, I got the sweet potato & taro smoothie... it was very delighful! I didn't get a drink on my 2nd visit. I want to try their other drinks next time. Do come here before they open and line up as the line will get long really fast. They will fill up the restaurant in no time. Space inside is slightly tight IMHO. You scan the bar code to place your order. They will bring the foods to your table. You may do take out as well. This is their only location at this time. I hope they will open more locations in the near future. Thank you Thumbling for sharing your yummy foods with us!

Yelp
First time at Thumbling but definitely not my last. Although a lot of people were outside took less than 20 mins for a party or two to be seated. We decided to try the beef udone, chicken egg fried rice and dumplings. Each plate was delicious. Next time I will try different dumplings. Busy location - every table was taken. Service was great. You order using a QR code but servers also walk by and you can order with them. So much more I want to try here!

Yelp
I came here yesterday out of curiosity since many friends mentioned this place is similar to DTF. The QR code waitlist seemed quick for a party of two and I was seated at the bar area. The menu is through QR code and the food came extremely quickly all at once so there really wasn't much space at the bar for the amount of dishes we ordered. Service was minimal, but efficiently fast. Overall, the food was decent tasting. I may hold higher standards since I come from Shanghai. Many of the dishes feel like a copy of DTF. The marinated cucumber isn't as good as when I make it or DTF because it doesn't have much crunch or garlic/rice vinegar taste. The dumplings and wontons were good, and the fried rice and sticky rice tasted great. The XLB didn't have much crab roe. Authentic ones should have yellow roe showing through the top. It was still nicely filled with soup, but missing something. Unfortunately I got food poisoning all night since so I'm not sure if I'd return here.

Yelp
Gave this place a try during lunch on a Saturday. I was pleasantly surprised. We had to check in via QR Code and waited for a bit. Upon being seated for our party of 6, it was another QR code to order which I did immediately, already knowing exactly what I wanted. Green beans 5/5 Not overly oil, nice snap, great flavor XLB 4/5 Green onion pancakes 4/5 Stir Fried Rice Cakes 4/5 Siu Mai (unique with soup inside) 4/5 Loved this XLB 3.5/5 Beef Nood Soup 3.5/5 Potstickers (love the crunchy outer crust but filling was eh) 3.5/5 Pan fried Pork Buns 3/5 They're were missing umph and ginger Hot Green Tea 4/5 Piping hot and mild to taste and not overly bitter

Yelp
Thumbling is one of my favorite go to's for beef rolls and XLB! I especially like their beef rolls since their sauce has a tangy sweetness that is unique and not found at other places. I was also intrigued by the custard XLB but I think I prefer it in bun form since the custard to skin ratio wasn't my favorite. The wait was pretty long (40 min) even about an hour before closing (8:30pm on a Saturday Night).

Yelp
This is one of a good and successful XLB "breakout" from DTF. Supposedly ex chef/cook. Similar taste and menu. Place is always crowded but turn around is quite fast. They get the system works. Everything through QR Code. From waitlist thru ordering at table. The only "manual" part is payment thru waiter. Still their prefer method. They come to ur table with tablet. We wait less than 30min for Sunday lunch crowd for table of 5. Food still hit and miss on some, thus not 5 Stars yet. You can tell which one are favorites. They're on most tables. Today's miss was the udon. So greasy and left an after taste. They used to have open kitchen for XLB. Now they covered the glass. Maybe too much distraction.

Yelp
Thumbing always hits! My 8 year old and 13 year old niece and nephew always say yes when we suggest this spot for lunch. They're almost always busy during lunch rush hour so keep keep that in mind. I suggest the beef noodles and spicy wontons. It's family style so I recommend visiting in larger groups (3-4+people).

Yelp
No need for me to ever go to DTF. This spot is an absolute gem. Food is top tier and have various boba tea options. If I can eat here everyday I would. The service is fast and efficient. It's a bit tight but what do you expect when it's this good. I'll update with pics next time .
