Can I get a "Meh"? Another let down. I've been driving by this Thundercloud since I moved in here. Another one of those "one of these days" places. It happens to be right by the remains of the former "My H-E-B". Tonight, I was on my way to enjoy a nice, sit-down meal somewhere to ameliorate a rather crappy day I had. I caught sight of Thundercloud, and thought to myself, "Self? Could this be the time I finally enter those doors? Will I--at last--have a Thundercloud sub in my belly?" Then, NO BULLSHIT--as I sat in the car contemplating, the Thundercloud radio spot came on, with that annoying jingle. Kizmet, I tell ya! I did a Batmobile under the 183 overpass. Had the Shoe-Cruiser been equipped with hubcaps, I would've thrown one or even two. I hastened to Thundercloud, skidding with smoking tires into the parking space; jumped out, à la Magnum P.I. (hard to do from a Camry) and ran up the the entrance door. *whew* They were still open!
A quick glance around, and eh... The place was decent, aesthetically. I did like the Austin stuff on the walls--ACL posters, Stevie Ray Vaughn pics, other Austin images. So... What to order? I wanted to try their Italian special sub, but I'd had a Subway BMT for lunch. Something hot... OK, it came down to the meatball and the pastrami. I went with the pastrami, since it's been a while since I had one. Combo, $8 and change. I must admit, the girl behind the counter was really fast and friendly. So I put a buck in the tip line. So, $9 and I felt as I did at Firehouse--good sandwich, just looked and felt small. Once again, the meat was plentiful, the bread was good, a nice deli mustard... But it just didn't seem like nine bucks. I'm starting to think it's me. I also had to ding them on the iced tea. The iced tea tasted old, and 'funny'. That didn't help my overall sense of "meh". OK, so tonight's performance gets an "A-OK". I'll be back, though. Like Firehouse--I really, REALLY, wanna like this place. So, until next time, Thunderclould. We will meet again.
