ThunderCloud Subs

They got lots of sandwich options and they even got gluten free options for those that require it. I got an Austin club which came with chicken bacon and avocado, pretty yummy, very filling, the person at the register was really nice and gave me time to think of what I wanted.

The best thundercloud in town. Fast, friendly staff, clean and lots of room inside. Abundant park and Huge chip selection too. The Big Paul is absolutely undefeated and it’s not even close!!

The ThunderCloud Subs at Riverside and Congress is simply outstanding. Twice, I needed last-minute party platters for my office. While other locations were rude about my same-day request, the Riverside team handled it with incredible positivity and got them ready faster than expected. Their flexibility and work ethic truly saved the day, and we got so many compliments about how delicious the sandwiches were! If you need a reliable, customer-focused ThunderCloud, this is the one! :)

So I lived in Austin as a teenager and ThinderCoud was the sandwich shop to go to. It was nice visiting again and the subs don't disappoint. They're all over Austin so check them out.

Healthy, fresh, and fast. What more could you ask for? These subs were great, and they had such good wheat bread (and we all know how difficult it can be to make healthy taste great lol). The staff was very friendly, and we had quick service! Plus, it has a really cute aesthetic for the restaurant.

I really like this place! They were pretty busy when I went in there and the staff was very nice and patient with everyone. When I ordered they made polite conversation. I think that is lacking in the world these days so it was nice to go in and have someone seem happy to be there and liked talking with everyone. They also made great food for sure!

Was very impressed my first time here! I instinctively got the double meat and I was surprised by the amount. I have a feeling the regular is probably equivalent to most shops “double”

This Sandwich shop has its own style that shows the long history it shares with it's city and state. Their signature Austin club sandwich is quite good and fulfilling to the soul. Wish I could have tasted their patato salad, unfortunately they were out during my visit. A good place to get a affordable meal in Austin.

We happened upon here after seeing the eclipse crowds lining up for other restaurants - which appeared to be very daunting. We were very happy to com here instead, they had great outdoor seating but also plenty of space indoords to escape the heat. The casual feel was perfect for a quick lunch. The sandwiches were not particularly inventive but they were quite delicious. I appreciated the addition of jalapenos to my tuna sandwich, gave it just the right amount of bite. Size-wise they were a pretty good size and overall good value. They definitely get my recommendation, especially for the very friendly staff. Worth a visit if you're just not ready to wait in an extended line for lunch!

This specific location/franchise has the best FRITO PIE, don't sleep! Really friendly and accommodating staff! They proportion everything really well too!

Thundercloud Subs is an Austin staple for a reason. Their veggie delight sandwich IS indeed delightful, in stark contrast to the pathetic assemblage of stale bread and watery vegetables that Subway churns out. This excellent vegan option comes complete with hummus, avocado, sprouts, olives, tomatoes, cucumber, onions, and honestly I don't even remember what else because there was so much going on. For the crowning jewel, add their "nada chicken" patty for some meatless protein. It has a nice crispy edge and fairly neutral taste, which makes it a good pairing with any sort of sauce or toppings. Definitely opt in for oregano, salt, and pepper to give it an extra flavor boost. Note that it doesn't keep very well and it's bit messy to eat even the first time around, which is absolutely perfect. If you're not wearing half of your sandwich by the end of the meal, was it even fully stuffed to begin with?

Great sandwhich stop. I can't remember what I got (Cali- something), but it was really good and I felt it was def worth the price. Workers were jamming some good tunes while I was in there too

The signage is what piqued our interest and I'm glad we went in! My boyfriend and I both ordered the club - everything tasted fresh and loved the bread! Also the two people working that night had such a positive/good energy and they didn't judge me for my need of an absurd amount of Mayo

Look, this is a great spot to come and purchase a sandwich. However, this is not a great spot to come and eat a sandwich. I recommend picking up and eating somewhere else. I dunno. The bathroom trashcans were trashily graffitied, as was the rest of the store. I'm all for graffiti, but this wasn't art, just scribbles. It's an order-and-go kind of place, which is a bit too bad since the sandwiches are messy and therefore hard to eat in the car. Keep in mind that this is a chain. It feels local, though.

I have always enjoyed Thundercloud. Sadly, the one near my office closed. Today I was out running errands during lunch and got to revisit the location near my old office. The guy who waited on me, couldn't have been more pleasant. Not only did they deliver a delicious product, they have down to earth, friendly, Austin, people working in their stores. I had the not a chicken sandwich, which was delicious!

I grew up as a kid from the Original Jersey Mike's in Point Pleasant, NJ and considered nothing else - unless it was a locally owned joint. I must say that Thundercloud Subs won me over during a lunch excursion with friends and now I find this as my go to before I head out on the lake on weekends. Fast, fresh, and friendly describe both the sandwiches and the employees! :D Thanks for keeping it real here in ATX Thundercloud!

Great combo of flavors & textures. The chicken salad didn't overpower the avocado & vice versa. The creamy combo was not overpowered but balanced well with the crunch of jalapeno, crisp bacon, and onion. There was an interesting oil on the sandwich. Someone said it was thunder sauce so for any other locals, is this correct? Is the shine of this sandwich really called thunder sauce?

I love this place. Keeping Austin weird one sammie at a time! I'm a particular fan of their Office Favorite (egg salad/avocado) Or the California Club.... Fresh ingredients make all the difference in these sandwiches. It costs slightly more than other places. It also tastes better in my opinion. Yum!!!

This is a pretty decent sub place. The quality of ingredients is better than at other chains. There is a good amount of toppings and the meats and sauces are all flavorful. The service is really good as well. Overall a good stop for a quick meal on a hot day.

I've lived in Austin for just over 40 years and never tried ThunderCloud before. Having started a new job where there's a ThunderCloud right across the street, I gave the menu a glance and decided to venture over for lunch. Probably the best meatball sub I've had. Probably also the messiest meatball sub I've ever had. The quality and quantity put the national chains to shame along with the customization options. The staff is friendly and efficient. Definitely adding to the lunch rotation now.

I love Thundercloud and used to go fairly often when I lived in Austin. There's so many locations and it's definitely a step up from the typical subway sandwich. I get the California club and always love it but I suggest asking for light avocado because it was literally dripping out of my sandwich the entire time, still great but definitely a little much. I typically order online so I can easily skip the line and they keep online orders refrigerated until pickup so you don't have to worry about your sandwich getting soggy. COVID Precautions: All staff wore masks and gloves and all customers are required to wear masks upon entry.

Super tasty! I ordered the BLT and was shocked by the amount of bacon on this sandwich! Reasonable prices for very fresh tasting food. Not the fanciest place out there, but the food is totally worth it. Staff was friendly and I was served promptly. Will definitely be back!

Fresh, light and tasty!! While on a Sunday whim, dogs in tow, we needed to find a quick bite and this pulled on on iPhone maps. The young man at the counter was very friendly making conversation with my fiancé providing great customer service in asking about how her day was going and him sharing about the weather and how nice it's been. Great food, reasonable prices, quick service and friendly employees at central location to downtown parks. What more could you ask for?!?

Been coming to this location over 20 years. Same excellent service as always and definitely is a nostalgic feeling when I enter the door. Fresh bread, meats, cheeses and veggies.

Doesn't look like much from the outside, it's legit one of the freshest sandwich joints I've been too. Truthfully I wasn't expecting to be wowed with it it was a lil dirty inside and BUSY and I'm sure that contributes to the messy. So if you're a customer, clean up after yourself!! There's only so much staff can do in the swing of lunch so do your part I received my order quickly and like I said everything fresh!! I'm vegetarian so I'm picky no wilty greens, mealy tomatoes or transparent onions here. If I'm in that neck of the woods, I always pop in for a veggie sub

Fresh, fast & healthy... just like their commercial says! An Austin based company reaching as far South as San Antonio. There are a lot of great eats in Austin. But, Thundercloud is the place to go if your in the mood for a kickin' sandwich. This location stays pretty busy & parking can be tricky. Great to support this Austin original.

I have been eating at this location for many years. Consistently good. I have been ordering curbside for about a year but same consistency. My favorite sandwich is a California sub. It has that special taste that I can't resist!!!

What's the secret?! I don't know. I dream of this place when I'm stuck on the island that I live on with no Good sandwiches in sight. Super cool vibe, killer music, bomb sandwiches!! Love you T-Cloud!!! ESP this location.

Really sub par sub. I think subway is better (better bread for starters). Very disappointing. I expected more from a local sub shop. (I had a veggie sub btw)

This is my favorite Thundercloud Sub store, my go-to shop a few days a week. And the reason why it's my go-to place and gets a perfect 5-star score is solely due to the consistent execution, quality sandwiches, and very friendly customer service by Ernie. It's all about The Dude, and in this case The Dude Ernie makes the best damn subs hands down. I caught onto the Thundercloud buzz about 16 yrs ago, it was simple, tasty with great quality and price. I keep up on their weekly specials, my faves include the NY Italian, Cali Club, Office Favorite, and Nada Chicken. Well, actually, I never discriminate with Thundercloud because I'm a fan of all of their sandwiches. I loved their recent special the Jalapeno Popper as well. This is my favorite store thanks to Ernie, who's been with Thundercloud since before I discovered them. He's always smiling, very friendly, remembers my name, and makes me feel at home. Ernie's sandwiches are so pristine and perfect that I always have to buy 2 of them when he works so I can save one for later. With any other staff I'll just buy 1, but since I get quality perfection from The Guru himself I'll opt to load up and save one for later. I always ask for extra onions and lettuce and Ernie obliges with just the right amount. Not too much or too little. Same goes with the pepper and thunder sauce - - he knows his customers well and tailors to their needs - the same time, every time. Excellent consistency of execution - - Ernie never fails. I always observe the staff who make my sandwiches, some work diligently, too fast, or even too slow, and while they all taste good the finished product rarely meets my requests and expectations. With Ernie I consistently get the perfect sandwich along with some friendly conversation, he always makes it a delightful experience here.

Yummy subs! Their wheat bread is super fluffy! I got the California Club and felt there could have been more meat but overall it was yummy!

Our favorite for years BUT they use styrofoam cups and many locations don't have recycling containers. I expect more out of a them, being a long time part of our. Austin community.

i didn't see the sauce on my sammy other than that it was the best place i've ever eaten at

i usually love thundercloud subs, this is definitely the worst i've ever had. the sandwich was soooo soggy and nasty, the lettuce was slimy and there was barely any tuna on it. this is so disappointing from somewhere i usually love eating.

For $15, this sandwich did not taste fresh at all. It was so expensive and it tasted like a school lunch sandwich that had been sitting in my bag all day. I was very disappointed for it being my first time. They charged me 0.30 cents per topping and only put four small mushrooms slices etc. I told them I was allergic to Onions and wanted cucumbers instead and still got charged. They skimmed every topping and the lettuce looked brown. The cheese looked like it had been out for a while. I am surprised people buy this when they can just go to Subway and get unlimited and generously portioned toppings.

This is just a neighborhood sub shop, so don't walk in expecting a recently updated or ultramodern atmosphere. It's cozy and homey, though, and the people who work there are delightful. Even when they are busy, everyone is cheerful and the sandwiches are all consistently delicious. I lost my wallet here once and it was returned to me by staff with everything intact. Some people are looking for artisanal sandwiches -- this is not that. This is just a good old unpretentious neighborhood sandwich shop.

When did Thundercloud start charging for extra tomatoes and salt/pepper? My sandwich was fine, but I didn't expect a cheap move like having money snaked from me for no discernable reason. I know it's only 60 cents, but come on. Bummer.

The staff is always super friendly and welcoming, which is hard to maintain throughout shifts. Been there multiple times, always helped or greeted quickly and with personality. But the food never tastes fresh. I've gotten the Austin club salad multiple times and this time was my last. The veggies all have that old refrigerator taste to them. Even the odor in the shop isn't the freshest. If they focused a little more on ingredient quality, I'd go back.

Killer spot, mega-friendly employees, meatball sub was hot and saucy, like I love it. Would def go back!

The gentlemen who worked the pick up area were very nice. I came in with my baby in her carrier which sometimes makes it hard to carry extra items. Today was one of those days. The gentleman who rang me up was such a sweet heart trying to help make my trip back to my car a successful one. HE CARRIED MY ITEMS TO MY CAR FOR ME!! This was my first visit to this location. Won't be my last!! Aaaaaannnnnddd my food is super delish!! The young man that made my sandwiches did an A++ job. Thanks guys You guys are super freakin duper!

If you want the shittiest service with snide comments I would say come here! Didn't get a chance to grab a sub, or I might have rated the place higher.

Good sammies, chill interior. They were out of lettuce on a Sunday so no salad but the Big Paul was meatastic. The guys who worked there tonight we're pretty emo and so the playlist was this weepy soppy sad music in the background. Cheer up guys, it's sunny out. Oh wait, it's clouds and thunder....

We've been coming here for a year or so and the food is always good and the orders are always right. The nada chicken sandwich and salad taste like real meat. Mostly the service keeps us coming back though, the people are always funny and kind even when the lines get long. Yesterday, Raymond (I think? I may be spelling it wrong it's hard to hear what people say through masks sometimes) really killed our order and helped us out even though there weren't any large options left. Also my husband gets a kick out of the stickers from the community all over the place. Thanks Raymond and team!

I waited in line for over 15 minutes.... There were two people working but only one waiting on people in line; the other person was evidently working on phone orders. Ridiculous

Simple, basic subs....fast efficient service and a good price close to my job. Couldn't ask for anything more, I do favor their tuna for some reason but they usually have parking and get your sandwich to you in less than a few minutes once you order.

I have lived in Austin for over 4 years now and just recently went to try the Thundercloud. I am so in love with the California Sub. We are making commitment ceremony plans, I swear. I would even give Thundercloud 5 stars on this alone, if it weren't for the fact that the people here are SO DAMN RUDE. Yeah, but I'll still eat that California Sub! O MAH GAWD mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Thundercloud is an Austin original. I enjoy stopping in for a turkey club combo whenever I'm visiting Austin. Awesome subs with bread that is much tastier and high-quality than what Subway uses. The service has always been fast and friendly. This location on Riverside has ample parking and the location is in a great location just off South Congress near the bridge that links the S. Congress entertainment district to downtown.

I believe it was my sister that first got me hooked on Thundercloud Turkey Subs and I can not imagine a day before that! I love that there are Thunderclouds all over Austin, so if I'm ever out and about and need a default lunch, this is my go-to spot! It's local and so Austin. I usually frequent this particular location, since it's close to work. I can walk there and you can call in an order a head of time, if you're in a rush. 2 things I love the most, walking + efficiency! The workers at this location are the best. Not just because I go there all the time, so they always grab my order the minute they see me walking in. They're always friendly and always seem like they love the rush of lunch time, rather than hate their lives/job. Pretty much any of the sandwiches are going to be good, just depends on what your tastes are. I always go for the turkey sub with everything on it! I also really love their bread here! And the last thing I love about Thundercloud is that they sponsor/hold the 5 mile Turkey Trot every year and it's a sister tradition for my family. It benefits Caritas of Austin and is always so much fun! It's the best buffer/excuse for stuffing your face during Thanksgiving!!

Got the veggie sub and by far the best sub ever! Service is rather quickly and customer service is excellent! Can't wait to go back!

I've been grabbing lunch at this location a couple of times per week for nearly three years; it's close to my office and the food is always great. I order online, and their system tells you when your meal will be ready for pick-up (about 30 minutes). Since I have an hour lunch break, I order before leaving work and my sandwich is always ready by the time I get to the shop 35-40 minutes later. However, they have a new guy handling online orders and the past three times I've ordered online this past week or so, my sandwich hasn't even been started when I get there 40 minutes later, and I've had to wait an additional 15-20 minutes before it's done. To make the experience even more frustrating is that the guy seems to have no care in the world that the online orders line is 12 people deep (longer than the regular order line) as he works at a snail's pace, loudly singing along to the shop music, and he even sits down to answer calls that last a few minutes while the line continues to grow. I worked in the service industry for years, and totally understand that sometimes you just get slammed, but it's beyond irritating that this kid has no hustle during the rush. When it's super busy, you don't sit around on the phone and take 5 minutes to make one order, you power through and then chill once things die down. I'll probably still go to this location because it's close and has been a long-time favorite, I just hope they bring back the guy who used to handle the online orders (fingers crossed he's just on vacation!) or replace the current nightmare with someone better.

I have been eating at Thundercloud since 1978. Never disappointed but sometimes the various locations don't seem clean. Lately I have been eating at this location and a new one in Pflugerville. This location and the one in Pflugerville always seen so much cleaner than other locations. Today this location was bright, clean, and fresh. The sandwich handlers used plastic gloves and didn't handle money with the same hands they made sandwiches with. Today my wife and son ate lunch there. Son talked me into trying the Austin Club sandwich. Was awesome!

Damn I forgot to take a picture of my sandwich. I'm ashamed to admit that I only tried Thundercloud subs for the first time two months ago and it may not seem that bad but I went to school in Austin. Regret regret regret. Subway used to be my lunch sandwich spot to go to but now Thundercloud is #1. Their sandwiches are delicious, the veggies fresh, lettuce crisp (just the way i like it!), and the employees behind the counter are uber awesome. I've tried the office favorite, the california club, and the regular club and they're always packed with meat, lettuce-tomatoes-onions and any extras you might want on your sandwich for a little additional cost. You have your choice of wheat or white bread and they also have a thundercloud sauce which is oil,vinegar and "something special". They usually have a sandwich special every month, this month being the regular club. Always enjoy coming in and the guys behind the counter keep me entertained while they make my sandwich! Love em'!

Roast beef was practically frozen. The sandwich maker was beatboxing while making sub. I cant imagine none of his spit got into food.

Yummy subs and the sub in the bowl option is great! Staff is nice, and you can customize everything! Very busy during weekday lunch.

I usually like thundercloud subs but the time i went into this one, the service was good, but my sandwich was missing avocado, hummus and the sauce i asked for, causing it to be a dry sandwich, which for some reason did not sit to well in my stomach im not quite sure why.

Jesus H. FUCing Christ that was a good damn sammich. We stopped in Thundercloud on our way back home after our snooze fest of an office training. I was one tutorial away from sticking my BIC pen in my ears to block the monotoned voice. I swear my eyes were bleeding from the bright lights and the 40 cups of java it kept to keep me awake. And is it necessary to keep the conference room -20 degrees? Seriously? You can only imagine my delight when I walked into Thundercloud. The seating area was a perfect room temperature. The lights were not blinding and the food was perfect. Next time my company requires us to drive to Austin for a mid morning torture... I'm going to straight to Thundercloud and saving myself the 4 hours of blood and tears.

Everywhere a Thundercloud experience is a special one. The one on Manchaca is wonderful - as is the one on Burnet. The people who make your subs take the time to ask you what you want on your order -and they make a delicious sub for you. At the Riverside location, an abusive employee - female manager with blond hair makes Thundercloud a creepout experience. She slams your change down on the counter (like the soup Nazi). She probably spits in your food to boot. Never go to this Thundercould location when the night manager wants to get otta there and starts abusing customers. I saw her be rude to the people who came in after me to (because she is there alone with just the clean up person, she thinks that no one is watching.) Thundercould management made a poor choice with this manager.

This is my favorite Thundercloud. I love the counter guys here. I love standing on my tip-toes and chatting with them over the counter. They're funny and nice and make me laugh, and that's what lunch is all about. There are no subs to be had at Thundercloud. If it can be served on wheat, or there's an avocado on the premises, it's not a sub. If you come looking for a sub, you'll be disappointed. So forget the name. TC is a sandwich shop that serves its sandwiches on really long bread. But the sandwiches are pretty good.
