"The chef-owner here is one who’s constantly reinvesting in his beloved restaurant and is always on the search for great new local suppliers – whether that’s fresh vegetables or free-range pork – and the pride he has in his establishment is palpable. The two menus showcase the locality well, with dishes that are satisfying and flavoursome. Do try the cheeses, which are accompanied by homemade crackers made using grains from the brewery next door." - Michelin Inspector

We took a trip to Athlone to visit Thyme on a recommendation. Well worth it and we'll definitely be back. A lovely welcoming small dining room. Very friendly staff who are comfortable and confident speaking about the dishes. And what a meal. From start to finish it was beautifully presented but more importantly very very tasty. The halibut was fantastic. The sides amazing. And the price! They could easily charge more for that quality of food. What a treat. Thank you Thyme.

OMG. The portions are meager and tasteless. The presentation is great, but it was not balanced and seasoned. The tuna dish had 5 pieces of 2x2 cm, which I could not distinguish the taste of. The amount of yogurt was overwhelming. The meat was not seared. Who wants “boiled steak”? It was not seasoned either. For such a price, it could be much better. Total disappointment.

After a full weekend of tennis this was a great place to visit and relax and make plans for the next few weekends. It is not far from the tennis club either . Food was great, service was great and they have a good wine list.

Micheline restaurant in Athlone. Every dish was delicious yet exquisite. Size of Yorkshire pudding threw us away when it got served 😆 Recommend to get Ham hock starter. We shared between two and almost fight for the last spoon. I had the duck main and it was falling apart from bone and no knife work was needed. On the other hand, beef was a little tough to cut them. They gave the normal knife and we had to ask for steak knife. In the middle part was not edible to chew but the rest was gorgeous. It’s a shame that we again had to share the dessert because we were too full. Some Christmas parties were going on right next table so it was quite loud time to time. Definitely would like to come back for dinner after Christmas.

I loved everything about it. The food down to the finest detail was fantastic. Couple that with Irish hospitality in a lovely dining room and you have an experience to remember. I opted for the 5 course menu for €65 per head . Very reasonably priced. We had the crispy hens egg and the wood pigeon for starters, followed by the lamb and brill and finally the chocolate, salted caramel tart and the rhubarb and liquorice something. Everything was delicious. A very strong recommendation and may even convince me to move back to Ireland

Google
What a great place to eat. The food was fantastic from syart to finish. If you are in Athlone it is the place to eat. The servers were great. 5 stars all the way, it is so well deserved. Compliments to the chefs.

Yelp
This establishment was absolutely stunning. You definitely need a reservation because there isn't much extra seating for you to just show up unannounced. The restaurant itself is charming, cute and quaint. The staff is super friendly and attentive to your needs. The food is a prefixed menu and it was absolutely Devine! I was worried I would still be hungry but as each course came out I felt more and more satisfied. If I'm ever back in Ireland I will be stopping here for another meal. It was fresh, beautifully plated and overall delicious. Worth every euro!

Yelp
I was here with a group and very impressed. A special menu for the group was provided with our name printed on it. Although charming, that wasn't the special part. This restaurant knows how to prepare and present local food. The menu seems to change with the seasons and what is available locally. I'd say looking around the restaurant (this was a Sunday evening) that you'll need reservations.

Yelp
I had an incredible dinner here with my husband. We came here for our 1st year wedding anniversary and couldn't have been more happier. The food and service was superb. They put so much attention to details in their food. The servers were attentive and friendly. I hope to go back one day!

Yelp
Cozy little restaurant in Athlone right by the river. Great food presentation and flavor. Note that "sweetbread" is actually fried pancreas. Not all that bad but odd consistency. Had the lamb shank which was great. The butternut squash soup was fantastic as was dessert. Nice wine list and well made creative cocktails. See pics...

Yelp
We had a reservation for 13 for dinner on August 16, 2019. When we arrived we were seated promptly and our Server (who's name escapes me) did a marvelous job of taking our drink and dinner orders and managed our group quite professionally. I ordered the Ham Hock, Crispy Hens Egg, Celeriac, Treacle Cured Bacon Vinaigrette as an appetizer and the Featherblade of Beef, Crispy Braised Cheek, Roast Onion, Broccoli and Smoked Gubeen for the main course. The food was absolutely outstanding. If I lived within 50 kilometers of this restaurant I would be here twice a week! The combination of flavors, execution and presentation were all first rate. I can assure you all the other members of our party were equally delighted with their selections. The deserts were just as fabulous. If you are in the area I highly recommend Thyme as a stop for a great meal.

Yelp
We specifically picked our places to visit in Ireland based on location and food reputation. Athlone has been mentioned on many food blogs and travel guides in the US and so we couldn't wait to visit. We chose Thyme based on the reviews from many others on multiple sites and were excited to taste some of Chef John Coffey's creations. The restaurant is cosy and really nicely laid-out. The staff were warm and welcoming and also explained menu choices clearly and carefully so we could choose what to eat. We decided to try a local craft brewery St. Mel's of Longford. I tried the Helles lager which was superb dry hopped and had a wonderful crisp finish. Brian had the Pale Ale version which was triple hopped during the brewing process then dry hopped a forth time for good measure. He loved it. For starters he had the vegetarian soup which was really hearty and tasty. We both loved the homemade Guinness and walnut bread and the waitress kindly shared their recipe so we can make it back home. I tried the Salmon Croquettes which were really incredible. They were cooked crisply on the outside but with local salmon and potatoes in them as well as some leek but I couldn't taste the latter. The dish was presented beautifully with some salad greens with small slices of apple. Dotted around the plate were red and gold pickled beetroot and some homemade cucumber ketchup. I was intrigued what this was going to taste like as it was an interesting green little blob but I can tell you it was like biting a fresh cucumber. Ingenious and a wonderful side accompanyment to the salmon. We were both a little predictable with our main courses but being from America we don't get very good lamb and we've been eating seafood at our most recent ports of call. The lamb was delicious. Was slow braised or roosted overnight and served with peas on a pea purée, some great garlic mashed potatoes, jus and broccoli. These were big portions so bring your appetite! The mains also came with a side each so we got the potatoe fries which were hand cut thick and crispy as well as some mixed veggies with mashed turnip, green beans and some delicious red cabbage. We weren't able to finish everything but we did eat every bit if the tender and flavorful lamb and most of our veggies. Brian raved about his mashed garlic potatoes. This place was terrific and very creative. Kudos to Chef John and his team. From the reviews Thyme is a proven and consistent winner and should definitely be your first meal in Athlone. We loved it so much we are going back the night after next which will be our last night in Ireland.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch and each had the onion soup, very good, and then shared the chicken breast. The food was very good but the service was slow.

Yelp
Restaurant was recommended by Athlone Springs hotel receptionist Tara and, boy, she was right - best restaurant (food wise) in Ireland. Food was not only super delicious, but also nicely served. Prices are alright, not too cheap, but we ordered from "value" menu, which was €21 two course and €26 three course meal. One minor waitressing problem - no one did take empty glasses or cups away. I had to ask to take my empty pint away, where was empty cup beside it and staff didn't take together. So every time I said "could you take this and that, PLEASE, thank you..... Other than that, this place is highly recommended.

Yelp
I'm a local Athlone man. Live in London now. But this place is still high on my list. Amazing food. Amazing service and amazing DRINKS! The menu is seasonal. The produce is local. The chef is amazing. Always really enjoy my dinner here. I've been so many times I can not remember. The location is beautiful, beside the river and beside a lovely bar. Definitely check this place out. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
When you hear from locals that this is among the best restaurants in town, you know it is probably going to be good. Thyme is not a fancy Michelen star style restaurant, it is simply a restaurant that serves very good food without being pretentious. Thyme suffers by being located beside The Olive Grove which is far bigger and has a better view but those in the know go to Thyme for food. There are usually bottles of Irish craft beer from the Carlow brewing company available. Food is cooked to order so it will take longer than some restaurants where batches of food is sitting waiting to be dished up. It is also pretty good value for money considering the quality of the food and the friendly service.

Yelp
Everything here was incredible! The warm homemade bread, the beautiful handmade pottery, the attentive staff. The food was presented like art and everything we ordered was delicious. We had the rhubarb dessert which was my favorite item- so delicate and complex. Highly recommended. This was our favorite meal in Athlone!

Yelp
Stopped at this little gem on the way through town. Food was incredible. Nice little garden area to sit outside if the day is nice or to hole up inside with a coffee if not. Service was good and everyone was very nice. If I make my way through here again I would definitely stop.

Yelp
Very nice and cosy restraunt hidden away in Athlone town. The food is delicious and the staff are very attentive. It was a bit warm and very noisy so couldnt have a great conversation but apart from that it was great.

Yelp
Great gem of a restaurant in a small town offering high quality local ingredients, better than many similar restaurants in the bigger Irish cities. Try the lamb croquettes with risotto, the succulent Irish wagyu beef and the all rhubarb dessert medley!

Yelp
Stopped in Athlone on way to Galway specifically because I had read about Thyme. Spent a lovely afternoon walking around - the River Shannon is mystical - but this evening's meal made the trip worthwhile. Incredible flavors!! Welcoming local service. One of the best meals we've had in our travels here!
