The Best Restaurants in Madison Heights | Eater Detroit

"Satisfy taco cravings at this restaurant located within a grocery store. The menu is quite expansive, featuring tacos, tortas, burritos, fajitas, and huaraches (fried tortillas with beans, cheese, lettuce, salsa and other fixins). On the weekends, warm up with a bowl of pozole or menudo." - Dorothy Hernandez

Detroit’s Essential Mexican Restaurants

"One of metro Detroit’s best-kept taqueria secrets is tucked inside a Mexican market in a strip mall off John R. Road. While most patrons go for the corn tacos that are served with the standard cilantro, onion, and lime accoutrements, the restaurant’s enormous tortas are some of the best sandwiches in town." - Serena Maria Daniels

Easily the worst dining experience I’ve ever had. We were enjoying our meal when a third friend arrived to join us at our table for two. Instead of handling it politely, the manager stormed over, raised his voice, and kicked us out — mid-meal. The staff followed suit with rudeness and zero professionalism. The sad part? The food was actually good. But no amount of flavor can make up for being treated like an inconvenience. Terrible management, unfriendly staff, and a complete disregard for customer service. Never again.

Google
Small place but good flavors coming out of this spot. Ordered the mixed fajitas with beans and rice. Comes with tortillas too. Also ordered a couple tamales. As good as any authentic Mexican restaurants I've been to. The fajitas had really good flavor. I've had many different versions of tamales from many places these are in my top 3. Overall totally recommend trying this place out . .

Google
The food was good, not anything special but that’s alright! The torta had a good flavor and it’s a decent size. The waiter was very friendly and nice though you do have to get your drink yourself from the fridge by the cash registers and when you are done eating you go pay yourself at the cash registers. I was a little confused as they didn’t explicitly mention that you had to go pay yourself when you were finished but overall the staff was nice and the food was good!

Google
the people here are so nice and welcoming. also the portions are huge - my sister and i ordered three tacos each and we felt so full after just 1.5 tacos. i will def be coming back it’s so so good (:

If you’re looking for authentic Mexican street tacos, Taco Tienda Mexicana is definitely a must-visit! I highly recommend trying their cecina tacos — they’re packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. What makes them stand out even more is the melted cheese layered between the tortillas, which adds a creamy, rich taste that pairs perfectly with the salty, tender cecina. The tacos come fully loaded with fresh veggies, onions, cilantro, and a splash of lime, making every bite balanced and satisfying. You can taste the freshness in every ingredient. Aside from the amazing tacos, you must try their horchata water. It’s one of the best I’ve had — super sweet, smooth, and refreshing, with that authentic cinnamon touch that makes it extra special. It’s the perfect drink to cool off your palate after enjoying some of their spicier salsas. The place itself has a friendly, casual vibe, and the staff is welcoming and quick. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a meal, the service is great and efficient. If you’re craving real Mexican flavors and a great taco experience, Taco Tienda Mexicana will not disappoint. I can’t wait to go back and try more from their menu!

Google
I love little restaurants like this. My first time having Mexican Ramen and I really liked it. The taste reminded me of Cincinnati chili with Cilantro and onions, and that is a good thing. It was so authentic that I had a little difficulty understanding our waitress, but I would definitely eat here again

Google
A friend recommended this spot when we were craving Mexican food, and I’m glad they did—it turned out to be a hidden gem. It’s a cool little combination of a store and restaurant, which gives it a really authentic vibe. I had the birria tacos, and they were definitely upper tier—maybe not the absolute best I’ve ever had, but excellent for the price. The guacamole was also spot-on—so good I left nothing on my plate. The staff was super friendly, and the whole experience felt laid-back and welcoming. If you’re in the mood for quality Mexican food without the hype or high prices, this place is absolutely worth checking out.

Google
I have been a regular for a while now. Love the food. Very homey. But i made the mistake of ordering take out. The lid of the box had melted and broken and I lost my whole lunch. All the liquid had spilled. The plastic was in my food. Sadly, i tipped well for a messed up Togo order.

Yelp
Superb authentic REAL Mexican food! Tacos are outstanding, all good but my favorites are tripe or tongue! A great place.

Yelp
Madison Heights has a hidden gem for real Mexican food, and it's called Tu Taco Tienda. If you're still wasting your time at those weak spots in Royal Oak like Mesa, Condado's, or Cantaritos, it's time for a serious wake-up call. This is the authentic Mexican food you've been missing. As someone from Los Angeles, I know good tacos--and Tu Taco Tienda delivers. Every bite takes me right back to the taco stands of LA. Fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and zero gimmicks--just real-deal Mexican food done right. Stop settling for watered-down imitations and get yourself to Tu Taco Tienda ASAP.

Yelp
I love that it's half restaurant, half market. Something about that makes it seem more authentic. The food was incredible. The salsa is one of my favorites, and I got tamales, a quesadilla and a taco. The service was fast, they turn tables pretty quick. It's a place that has the smells I would like in my house all the time. The jalapeños and cheese tamale was my favorite. I would highly recommend that. I think I put the salsa on every bite or dunked my food. It made every dish taste better. We even got some to go!

Yelp
Really wanted to love this place but it was so-so for me. I went in and ordered to-go and they had a weird process where there was a table in the back on the restaurant side and you walk up and someone takes your order. You then have to wait till they process your order, (just sit and guess) and walk up to the register on the shop side to pay. The girl who took my order was extremely nice but the guy at the register was not the friendliest. The space is SUPER small, hence why I order to-go. I was disappointed with the tacos and the size of the tamales when I got home. The tortilla was old and the edges were hard. The only thing that saved them were the sauces.
google avatar

Yelp
I really like the carnitas birria on corn flour with consumé, the green jalapeño sauce is so fresh that I could sip on a cup of it. Ordering can be a bit tricky depending on the cashier. Language can be an obstacle so sometimes it's easier to point to what you want.

Yelp
Food and service is great here! Today, I had 3 different tacos. Variety was great! I had a coke zero to drink!
google avatar

Yelp
So I must not like authentic Mexican food - everything looked pretty good but the taste just wasn't there for me. The meats felt like scraps and somewhat dry, the chips not very crisp and no texture. The sauce just meh. Must be me though because everyone seems to be giving this place high marks. Oh well, I'll just stick with my crunchy Taco Supremes with 3 packs of hot sauce at Taco Bell.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Forever my favorite place to get tacos!! I've tried tacos all over the world - nothing compares to Tienda Mexicana! I get the same thing every time, 2 chorizo tacos with Pico, & a side of rice and beans.
google avatar

Kari T.

Yelp
Friendly service. Fresh food. The staff doesn't know what gluten free means - so not an option if you're worried about where flour lurks.
google avatar

Jamie G.

Yelp
The street tacos here are the best outside of Detroit. Services is quick and easy, menu as easy to navigate. The ambience leaves a little bit desired, there are a couple of tables to eat your lunch, we often do takeout and take it with us.

Yelp
Taco Tienda is my ALL TIME FAVORITE place to get authentic Mexican tacos. This restaurant is located in an unassuming grocery store in Madison Heights. The drinks are conveniently located for purchase in the grocery section of the store. The overall restaurant/ store is cute but definitely a no frills type of place. The real star here is their food. Do yourself a favor and order the tacos with "cheese between the tortillas". It is next level amazing with the special cheese that they use. When I lived in Royal Oak I would religiously order the shrimp, birria, and steak tacos from Taco Tienda at least once a month as a personal treat. My favorite taco is definitely the shrimp taco. The shrimp is so succulent and flavorful and the sauce that they drizzle on top just elevates everything to a whole new level. The Birria taco is arguably just as good! The sauce that it comes with is so tasty and addicting. The steak taco is also great but not ask flavorful as the other two. To take the experience to the next level I always add a bit of their homemade green and red sauces to my tacos. The red sauce is very spicy but packed with flavor. Lastly for dessert I almost always ordered their tres leche. The cake is always moist, creamy, and the whipped cream topping wasn't too sweet. I cannot wait to visit Michigan again and order some tacos!

Yelp
Great hospitality! Love how they have delicious options and I respect that they have their culture seasonings and products! New customer will be returning. I normally add photos but I couldn't stop eating the food highly recommend coming here
google avatar

Yelp
A local spot inside a bodega. Specializing in street style tacos. Family owned. Quick and easy lunch spot. No frills. Fair prices. I usually get the carne asada tacos or quesadilla- sometimes both! Flavor is good for the type of establishment this is but doesn't disappoint. Service is good as well. The tacos come in cute baskets reminiscent of the 50s which is a cute homey touch. It's usually not that busy so I know I could always rely on this place if I'm craving tacos.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
Delicious & authentic Mexican food!! You can just tell by their salsa bottles! Which are a bit hot so be prepared. The restaurant is conveniently attached to a mini store- where you can ring up any beverage you like. All of their servers are friendly. The enchiladas are by far my favorite dish yet!!
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
Some of the best tacos I've had outside of LA. Very homey, authentic setting, great staff and fast service and most importantly amazing quality food. We have had a variety of different tacos and each one is amazing. The lengua being my personal favourite. I usually alternate between here and Azteca down the street and neither disappoints me. Prices are higher than I'm used to for tacos in LA, but it is what it is. Great eats, tho.
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
I haven't been here in over 10 years. I used to get the Al la crate tacos, which were amazing. A lot has changed - a whole restaurant is inside now. I got the chili relleno special. It was unexpectedly spicy. Flour tortillas and beans were great. Rice was clumpy and not good. I wouldn't order this dish again, but will likely come back to try the tacos.
google avatar

Hinna S.

Yelp
I usually Uber eats from here and the tacos are SO authentic!! I love the taste and the portion sizes!! Now that I live a little further away, I was definitely be going in person for the tacos and enchiladas!!
google avatar

Rob B.

Yelp
We had a carryout order. The Al Pastor Taco is still good, but the meat was kinda on the drier side, and the flavor is getting lighter. The chips were actually so lightly salted that it was basically non-existent. Unfortunately, the chips portion was also so little that I bought a backup bag of chips at a local store. We ate their chips first, which needs the salsa. The store bought tortilla chips with their salsa was popping. Overall, we have started looking for a new taco spot. The "Wow" has worn, but until then, we will have to be satisfied.
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
I REALLY wanted to like the chipotle sauce for the shrimp tacos, but I had a feeling it was going to be a bit too much for my palate, so I asked for it on the sides and when I did - an entirely different waiter returned to take our order?! Overall, the food was decent. I enjoyed the taco shells, a much lighter softer corn tortilla. The shrimp was well cooked, but maybe more than two on a taco? My partner tried the Beef Cheek taco and the meat itself was so tender, but there was a lack of flavor to some degree. My kiddos also had the shrimp tacos, as there's no option for any kiddos, and the price is PER taco. I probably won't be dining here again. Truth be told, I've just had better tacos elsewhere.

Yelp
Recently moved to the area from Cali and had been missing good Mexican food (not Tex-Mex) until I found this place. I've been twice now trying different things and both times the food was excellent. Definitely the best Mexican food I've had in Michigan. Staff is also very friendly and helpful. It's attached to a grocery store and you can grab your own drinks after you're seated and then at the end you just pay at the grocery checkout.
google avatar

Sophie B.

Yelp
10000% the best Mexican food in all of Michigan. It is so authentic, flavorful, and delicious. Their tacos are so filling and well priced.
google avatar

Julian B.

Yelp
Top 5 spot in Metro D. Plus you have grocery items you can buy. Win win. Been coming here since its early days.

Yelp
This place reminds me of some of the places I go to when I'm in Florida for work. An amazing little grocery store amd restaurant with absolute top notch Mexican food. I'm so glad to have discovered this place!

Kevin I.

Yelp
This is the second time they have forgotten an entire order. They are now on the list of never to order from again. Gave them a second chance and they screwed that up again. Fool me once.....
google avatar

Saketh A.

Yelp
This place is by far the best Mexican spot! I always get the Al pastor burrito with a side of green/verde sauce. Add some lime and it'll fill you up for sure. The burrito is so juicy and rich and the amount of meat they put in it is a huge up for me :) The staff are super friendly. There are always locals who come here and I think the entire Latino population comes here. When you see that, you know it's the spot for real authentic foooood! The seating is kind of small for a Mexican place but it is homey with a part of the place as a Latino grocery/snack store.
google avatar

Payton C.

Yelp
The quesa birria tacos are amazing! The servers are friendly and the inside is cute. I am from over 3 hours away and we stopped here on the way home. I will be coming back here.
google avatar

Yelp
Update July 2024. 2nd visit, I noticed how really unsanitary the place is. The bathroom was appalling and there are cases of stuff stacked up in the hallways where you can barely get through. The food's pretty good and really cheap but come on. Have some standards.

Brittany M.

Yelp
Has been a favorite of ours for years. The food is flavorful and filling. Burritos are my go to but the tacos and other items are delicious as well. It is a hidden gem with part Mexican market part restaurant. It's a fast casual vibe. The staff is friendly and service is quick.
google avatar

Pauly G.

Yelp
If the food taste like this when I started visiting over a decade ago, not sure I would have visited so many times Review is for food & food only. I ordered 3 tacos, all different. Except the carnitas meat looked identical to the chorizo taco. That was a first. Taco meat was Luke warm at best and garnished w an old dried up uneven cut radish. The point of garnishing w something fresh is to show freshness, overlooked this aspect of the meal I guess. Pico was water logged, diced poorly & had little to no flavor. I ordered a tamale & let me tell you, I l've had warmer tamales from the guys who bring them into work after a hour car ride to get them to me. Ice cold tamale, never warmed, just thrown in my food basket ice cold. You guys either had a rough week or need to do better. I could have made better tacos out of the trunk of my car. Not impressed.
google avatar

Asia H.

Yelp
okayyyy.. so the food quality has been on a steady decline since we started going here 2 years ago. we moved from california and needed some solid mexican food in the area. they were decent and scratched the itch. this is no longer going to be my go-to spot. paying $10 for a burrito that is literally more tortilla than filling is a joke. i'm just gonna start making mexican food at home, cuz honestly i'll do a better job. what a let down.
google avatar

Ryosuke U.

Yelp
Great authentic tacos and my Goto place for Tortas. Super casual and reasonable price.

Davis C.

Yelp
Very good tacos. Not too expensive. Each flavor was delicious! The service was friendly and quick. There is not too much seating on the inside, but there is enough for a small group of friends, and they also have picnic tables behind the restaurant. Overall 10 out of 10 anytime I'm in the area I will stop by.
google avatar

Jeremy N.

Yelp
The tacos are unbelievable! I ordered pork Tamales but received chicken.. No big deal.. However, the chicken was very dry. I suggest getting the tacos! Their hot sauce is not made for the faint.

Taylor H.

Yelp
Place was packed when we entered for lunch. Absolutely loved the chips and salsa, chilaquiles and enchiladas. Looking forward to the next visit!

Tara S.

Yelp
Unfortunately the food was extremely subpar. Nothing tasted fresh and a lot was inedible. The serving sizes were extremely small compared to the last time we ordered here . All entrees tasted the same with the same seasoning no matter what they were .

Laura K.

Yelp
The best Mexican food in metro Detroit. Always a great experience. I come here frequently for the jalapeño tamales, but everything I've had here has been fantastic. The etole is so good too. The service is always great as well. Friendly staff and quick service. Lots of interesting snacks and drinks for purchase as well.
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
My cousin took me to this place the other night and I was so blown away by how good they were for the price (2.50 for most types of tacos). We also split the elotes and I had a tamale. I had a carnitas, carne asada, and al pastor taco. All were great, meat in the al pastor was maybe a little dry but otherwise no complaints. The tortillas were absolutely stars - I'm normally not a fan of corn tortillas but these were to die for. The elotes are delicious and a massive portion! Definitely big enough for 2, maybe 3 people. All in all a really delicious, easy dinner for under $15. Would go back if I come back to the area.

Alice Z.

Yelp
My go to for tacos and burritos in the area! Some places will have very greasy food, but Taco Tienda's food is never heavy or greasy. One thing though: I always get their elote, but recently it seems it's gotten too salty and just not the same. Not sure why.
google avatar

Meng H.

Yelp
Why so low? My daughter loves this place. Why? Not sure. She bought me 3 steak taco. There was basically nothing in it besides cilantro and white onions. Plain. No taste. No salt. No oil. So dry. Why do people eat here? If their simple main dish is this, why bother. I'm sure it's Authentic Mexican food... but, make it better!!!! Please!!!! My wife and kids eat Taco Bell all the time. I'm a simple taco guy, but I have to have cheese and tomato and sour cream and hot sauce. The 1 hot sauce they provided was a joke. I'm not new to hot sauce because I'm Asian. I do like Pico de gallo. Some of you are saying stuff like, "it's the best Mexican food I have ever had". Seriously. Go to Taco Bell. Taco Bell is a chain but they taste their food before they design it and sell it. Try a "Taco Supreme"! The supreme will give you a baseline on what a good taco should taste like. Lol I see long lines... for what? I'll pass. Disappointed. If you like it, you like it. Don't say I didn't warm you.

Tom B.

Yelp
Simply the best. Fantastic food, fantastic service, and the environment is awesome. I've also purchased imports from them when I cook at home-authentic and just the best.
google avatar

Lydia K.

Yelp
A little sketch walking in but the food is BOMB! It kind of gives off gas station vibes when you walk in you have to walk to the convenient store side to grab a drink. The tacos are really good. It's your local hole in the wall authentic Mexican tacos. The salsa is really fresh packed with cilantro, which is amazing. Just try everything. You won't regret it I promise.
google avatar

Margie S.

Yelp
This is the best taco place in metro Detroit in my opinion. They have all my favorites and everything tastes similar to what I ate in Mexico. You can get Al Pastor, chicken and steak but they also have lingua and other meats for the adventurous taco eater have a small market to the right and you can order from the menu on the left. There are small tables for dining in but you can also carry out if you wish to. You could get tamales by the dozen and they have some of the best tortillas I have had in a long time. It is located in a small shopping plaza across from the red Robin on John R Rd. Make sure you check it out.
google avatar

Eshtar O.

Yelp
The tacos are bomb here! I love the langua tacos, they're extremely flavorful and tender. The barria tacos are my personal favorite, everyone should try it at least once. The pollo and al pastor tacos are lovely. I wasn't very impressed with the asada tacos, but they weren't bad. The street corn is pretty good and I love the shop located in the restaurant. I was able to get a few Mexican candies from there that I really enjoy :-) it reminded me of visiting in Arizona.
google avatar

Sneha B.

Yelp
Went to this restaurant for dinner. I must say this place is a hidden gem! We ordered the Shrimp tacos, Chilaquiles, Chicken Fajitas and Tamales. I highly recommend the Shrimp Tacos! (I can't wait to try it again). My husband doesn't like Shrimp much but he was a fan of sh tacos too. The red salsa is fire but the green is just right! Their Jamaica (Hibiscus Tea) beverage was too good and refreshing.
google avatar

Javier B.

Yelp
amazing service and food, always fast and always quality food. ambience is family friendly and always kind and helpful.

A C.

Yelp
No silverware with To-go order, couldn't eat food until later when it was cold. Quesadilla was okay, but quite small for price, was more like a taco. Elote was probably delicious when hot.
google avatar

Na P.

Yelp
The food is great, closest to authentic Mexicna food. Price is great, good money for the value. Also the services is super fast so be prepared to start earing right away.
google avatar

Blair S.

Yelp
Taco Tienda is a hidden treasure! I pass it on my way home from work everyday and had been wanting to try it for a while. It did not disappoint. The tacos were delicious! One of my favorites was the shrimp taco. The staff is wonderful, helpful, and nice. It was a fun experience thay I would recommend to others! Don't miss out!

P B.

Yelp
Taco tienda never does me wrong. This small local Mexican grocery store has my favorite Mexican food in the area. Favorites: Birria tacos, chicken milanesa torta, pastor burrito. Good prices, solid portions, and great staff!
