4 1/2 stars is really the better rating, but I really have to round down this time. This was my pick for my birthday dinner for the trip my wife and I took up to the city. When I made the reservation, I was intrigued by the Tiers Paysage menu which seemed to be more based in a farm to table ascetic, which I like and I knew my wife preferred.
But coming here, they had made the transition to the Bon Service, which has more of an American Southern bend. From what I can tell, much of the team has held over, but there are some big changes.
I am not sure I would have booked this if I had spotted the menu in advance, but we soldiered on. My wife ordered a pork dish, can't recall the exact cut, but it is typically a very fatty cut. That surprised me, but she really liked it. I had the walleye in a pan sauce, I am guessing incorporating some of the rendered fat from the pork. Now, it could not have been from her dish, because the timing of the food was terrible, but I'll get to that. We also ordered grits with a gouda cheese.
The food was awesome. My fish was perfect, with a crispy skin, perfectly cooked flesh and a tasty, somewhat smoky pan sauce. I didn't have any of her dish, but she did say it was really good. The grits were also excellent. For desert we split some sort of a banana pie, which was almost like a banana creme brule on a cookie crust. It was off the hook. the drinks were also really good.
The problem? Timing. OK fine, there was a big birthday party and there was another big bachelor party in the back room. But my entree came out at least 5 minutes before my wife's entree was delivered. So I sat there, staring at my food for 5 minutes getting cold while my wife had nothing in front of her. I would have asked for split plates but I wasn't eating any of hers. Then when hers did show up, it probably took another 5 minutes before the grits came out. So 2 people, 3 dishes, and we told the server, she's having this, I'm having that, and we're splitting the other, and it still took at least 10 minutes of time between dropping the 1st and last plate. I think we both would have preferred the grits with the food, not after. I would have preferred if I sat there with nothing for an extra 10 minutes and all 3 plates came out at the same time.
