We picked this vineyard out to visit on a recent three day trip to the area. It was a Chamber of Commerce weather day for August in North Georgia, not too hot, clear blue skies with a dot here and there of puffy white clouds with the mountains and vineyard view - beautiful.
We had made a reservation for a wine tasting in the "barrel room" but arrived a bit early. It was somewhat confusing with the signage as to where we should go - up to the Red Barn, or to the winery.
So, up to the Red Barn, which learned was an old cow/dairy barn, renovated. This was a great setting with an impressive interior bar area and an outer seating area equally impressive.
We met Luke, the wine master and sommelier, who escorted us down to the winery area and began our tasting. Luke was helpful and knowledgeable (especially since he had been at this vineyard for only 2 weeks, formerly at another vineyard in Dahlonega). He had to scoot off to a private group tasting.
Although we had mentioned our reservation on arrival, it was not until a couple of taste servings that I thought something was "off" and mentioned again to Kelly, the other tasting coordinator, about it. She said we were supposed to be in the barrel room, so off we go.
This was a larger space and I understand a newer addition (as within just a few days or a week since the barrels arrived). There we were treated to larger sampling of each of their five featured wines. We actually had to tell them to back off a little on the size since one of us had to drive! Imagine that ($24 per person, so we got a fair deal).
So we are sitting there alone, left to our wine and Spotify music in this great setting and in walks Jabe. Jabe says he does "a little bit of everything around here", and that is because he is the General Manager but prefers the title Wine Maker. Jabe is the guy hired to revitalize Tiger Mountain Vineyards for a new owner and to really get it off the ground on new footing.
He was pleasant and enjoyable to talk with about the vineyard, the plans for the future and his vision for the vineyard as an outdoor venue and destination. We were warmly welcomed by the staff and Jabe had all the time to answer our questions and discuss with us the vision and direction, even though I'm sure he was busy and didn't count on our being there.
Next time we are in the area, we will come back and plan to eat as well at the Red Barn, take in some music and enjoy this North Georgia vineyard.
We did like all five wines tasted and bought a bottle of the Merlot for later, when there was no driving in our future!
