6 Ways to Try a True Florida Rum Runner, From Islamorada to Key West

"I learned that in 1969 the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar in Islamorada was an unapologetically kitschy escape—bamboo furniture, beach views, Polynesian masks—where a bartender named John Ebert mixed leftover banana and blackberry liqueurs into what became the Rum Runner, a sweet, fruity concoction served in a plastic cup that captured the island’s lawless energy and laid-back vibe." - Carrie Honaker

Where to Stop and Eat on the Drive From Miami to Key West | Eater Miami

"When I reach the Tiki Bar (84001 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada) it’s time for a fruity frozen beverage: I sit right on the ocean sipping a “World Famous Frozen Rum Runner” or a Miami Vice while listening to live music, and the menu also features fish sandwiches (fried, grilled, or blackened), fish tacos, peel ’n eat shrimp, and shucked oysters." - Amber Love Bond

I recently stopped by this cozy little tiki bar, and I have to say — what a pleasant surprise! The atmosphere is fun and tropical, with bright décor and beachy vibes that make you feel like you’re on vacation. It did take a little while to get seated since the space is pretty limited, and the initial wait for service was on the longer side. However, once we were greeted, our waiter was super friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. The real star here, though, was the food — seriously impressive! Every dish we ordered was flavorful and beautifully presented, far better than I expected from such a small spot. Once we placed our order, the food actually came out surprisingly fast and piping hot. Overall, despite the short wait and tight seating, the great service, tasty food, and chill island vibes made it a memorable experience. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the mood for a little tropical getaway!

We were there on our lunch break driving from key west. It's worth a stop. Food is not too pricey and the drinks were moderately priced. We went for a stroll and glad we made a stop. Beautiful views of the ocean.

Love the beer and cocktail selection. All the bartenders were spot on, and the live music was fantastic (especially 06 October). They have a small food menu and we were a bit surprised that it was done so well. We loved the fish&chips, and the smoked fish dip!

Took me a while to find it — came here ALOT in late 90s but it was all tiki bar, reggae, rum runners and raw oysters connected with Kokomo inn immediately next door. Was here again maybe 10-15 years ago - pretty much like before. Now it’s all corp, modernized…well done but it took me at least 15 min to convince myself it was the same place. Had the chicken quesadillas (they’re ok); chicharrones (crunchy and warm but I think from a bag — correct me if I’m wrong); elote bowl was “pretty good”. Rum runner was very good (not frozen) Service was great. Atmosphere good, isn’t the same, but all fabulous things must come to an end and so with the 80s & 90s tiki bar on Islamorada. The new one is definitely worth a stop. I came down to the keys today for this place only…glad I did. To the owners and managers…I get it…it’s a beautiful remake but for this old Buffeter I miss the old days at the Kokomo Tiiki Hut PS. The bathrooms fared VERY well with the refurb. Very clean and modern!!

Great place right at the resort to get good snacks and drinks. Would highly recommend their pina colada, with or without alcohol. They have tons of other drinks and good appetizers to share, including hummus and french fries. They have pretty swiftly service and a good amount of offerings. Always a highlight to get treats from here during my stay at the resort.

Live music, good drinks, a fire pit, many outdoor seats, great drinks. The atmosphere is very relaxing. We really enjoyed the love music and walking along the boardwalk area. They added toech/tiki lights and a lot of remodeling. Very nice job remodeling everything here. The Sticky Steak skewers were very good.

Knowing it was the home of the original rum runner made it a hard one to pass on stopping. So glad we did. Grabbed some lunch as well. Coconut shrimp with the sauce to dip it into was delicious as well as the tuna we had. The original rum runner was delicious. The scenery around there was amazing to just walk around if you want by the water. Plenty of seating and swings along the way.

This place has gone through many phases. I’ve come here since the early 2000’s Have to say the welcome staff and service were excellent, the views were incredible, and the ambience was super relaxing. The food though could have used, some help as well as the drinks. Would I come again? Sure, it’s an iconic place… but I’ll explore my options next time.
