6 Ways to Try a True Florida Rum Runner, From Islamorada to Key West

"I learned that in 1969 the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar in Islamorada was an unapologetically kitschy escape—bamboo furniture, beach views, Polynesian masks—where a bartender named John Ebert mixed leftover banana and blackberry liqueurs into what became the Rum Runner, a sweet, fruity concoction served in a plastic cup that captured the island’s lawless energy and laid-back vibe." - Carrie Honaker

Where to Stop and Eat on the Drive From Miami to Key West | Eater Miami

"When I reach the Tiki Bar (84001 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada) it’s time for a fruity frozen beverage: I sit right on the ocean sipping a “World Famous Frozen Rum Runner” or a Miami Vice while listening to live music, and the menu also features fish sandwiches (fried, grilled, or blackened), fish tacos, peel ’n eat shrimp, and shucked oysters." - Amber Love Bond

I recently stopped by this cozy little tiki bar, and I have to say — what a pleasant surprise! The atmosphere is fun and tropical, with bright décor and beachy vibes that make you feel like you’re on vacation. It did take a little while to get seated since the space is pretty limited, and the initial wait for service was on the longer side. However, once we were greeted, our waiter was super friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. The real star here, though, was the food — seriously impressive! Every dish we ordered was flavorful and beautifully presented, far better than I expected from such a small spot. Once we placed our order, the food actually came out surprisingly fast and piping hot. Overall, despite the short wait and tight seating, the great service, tasty food, and chill island vibes made it a memorable experience. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the mood for a little tropical getaway!

Stopped in to enjoy the tiki bar this tiki is beautiful. The tiki bar is inside the grounds of a resort Marriott hotel, but the tiki bar is open to the public come through the gate and explain where you’re going .the grounds of the resort are gorgeous as you drive( we ride) in , the tiki bar offers very nice cocktails, and a good selection of beers.our 1st Bar-maids name was Francesca she was so good and attentive what a wonderful personality the kind of Lady you want working for you. Her partner in the bar who i didnt catch her name because i think she hates her job was abit on the rude side so we had our drinks and left. My girlfriend felt it better that we finish our drinks away from the bar then leave that area to keep me from asking her if she hated her job … ill be back because 1 person cant wreck a great place for me . Id highly recommend any of my friends or family to stop in and enjoy this tiki bar. Its beautiful and as mentioned Francesca was good and knows her work.

Google
Love the beer and cocktail selection. All the bartenders were spot on, and the live music was fantastic (especially 06 October). They have a small food menu and we were a bit surprised that it was done so well. We loved the fish&chips, and the smoked fish dip!

We were there on our lunch break driving from key west. It's worth a stop. Food is not too pricey and the drinks were moderately priced. We went for a stroll and glad we made a stop. Beautiful views of the ocean.

This place is really great!! We have been staying at Three Waters Marina on our boat since December 21st and have enjoyed many fun nights at the Tiki Bar meeting people from all over the country and the world! The staff, namely Adalberto, Baydel, and Jimmson , have been so gracious and accommodating to all of our requests. They remember us each time we visit like we’re all good friends. The food and drinks have always been delicious and if there’s a mistake they instantly make it right! We have really enjoyed our experiences here.

Google
Took me a while to find it — came here ALOT in late 90s but it was all tiki bar, reggae, rum runners and raw oysters connected with Kokomo inn immediately next door. Was here again maybe 10-15 years ago - pretty much like before. Now it’s all corp, modernized…well done but it took me at least 15 min to convince myself it was the same place. Had the chicken quesadillas (they’re ok); chicharrones (crunchy and warm but I think from a bag — correct me if I’m wrong); elote bowl was “pretty good”. Rum runner was very good (not frozen) Service was great. Atmosphere good, isn’t the same, but all fabulous things must come to an end and so with the 80s & 90s tiki bar on Islamorada. The new one is definitely worth a stop. I came down to the keys today for this place only…glad I did. To the owners and managers…I get it…it’s a beautiful remake but for this old Buffeter I miss the old days at the Kokomo Tiiki Hut PS. The bathrooms fared VERY well with the refurb. Very clean and modern!!

Google
Great place right at the resort to get good snacks and drinks. Would highly recommend their pina colada, with or without alcohol. They have tons of other drinks and good appetizers to share, including hummus and french fries. They have pretty swiftly service and a good amount of offerings. Always a highlight to get treats from here during my stay at the resort.

Google
Five stars for the updated Tiki Bar at Three Waters! The birthplace of the Rum Runner has been beautifully refreshed. Great drinks, nightly live music, and unbeatable views of the Atlantic. It’s easily one of the coolest spots to hang out in the Upper Keys right now.

Yelp
This has been the best meal (and drinks) we've had during our trip. First and foremost, kudos to Adalberto for his excellent service. This young man is courteous, friendly, and respectful. Nice vibe, clean, and we LOVE the counter bar. GRACIAS
google avatar

Yelp
Because of its historical significance (birthplace of the Rumrunner drink in the early 1970's) we really wanted to love this place. We ordered the Caribbean Caesar salad with the fresh catch, the Sticky Grilled Beef Skewers, and the Rumrunner drink. The salad was just ok. The beef skewers were better than the salad. The big disappointment was the signature Rumrunner drink. Unfortunately the "new" Tiki Bar is no longer the original "Tiki Bar" of old. Service was good. Prices are high.

Yelp
I have been visiting Tiki Bar since I was a little girl, it's nostalgic. However, nostalgia lovers take note, the giant rum runner photo op was removed some time ago in the revamp of the Three Waters Resort property. The Tiki Bar is also alongside other dining options, which were closed Monday lunch time. We grabbed a table under the Tiki and grabbed drinks and a couple apps on our way down into the keys. The service started off well, but no follow through. It wasn't busy when we started, but it picked up as we were ready to leave. We never did receive napkins or silverware, thankfully only fingers were needed. We were never asked if we were good until we were ready to head out. My drink, Pain Killer, was decent. The food was tasty and I definitely recommend the fries and the calamari. Prices, definitely higher than I expected. The area is still great for water views, and I will still probably return as is tradition, but it's just not the same.

Yelp
Service was definitely lacking when we visited. Very few people drinking and dining but staff were nowhere to be seen. Drinks were very small with high prices. Maybe the food is better? Views were gorgeous and they had tons of fans running to keep things cool.

Yelp
Great location - food was very good ! Great view of marina- service could have been a little more attentive- once food was delivered - nobody came back until they brought the bill.

Kevin D.

Yelp
Blackened mahi ceasar salad with amazing drinks!!! Wife said it was the best she has had! Amy was awesome!

Lisa G.

Yelp
Loved this tiki bar! Fun beach vibe, great drinks, and the bartenders are the best - Raydel & Adaleko, super fast, friendly, and fun. Great time overall.
google avatar

Hailey F.

Yelp
Coolest spot in Islamorada! Food was great, and atmosphere was so neat with outdoor games, the dock, and perfect sunset views.
google avatar

Liz R.

Yelp
A friend of mine suggested this bar for great sunset views and it did not disappoint! There's parking in front of the hotel. We went a little before sunset to grab some seats facing the water. We looked over the menu and got the pineapple spritz and the rum runner. The rum runner is their specialty drink so we had to try it. We decided to get an appetizer too. We got the chicken sliders. The drinks were really good! Loved my spritz! The chicken sliders were kinda on the smaller side and were mostly bread but we liked the sauce. Overall a nice time but would just come for drinks next time.
google avatar

Josh D.

Yelp
We dined here and had some mixed reviews with 4 people loving their meal and 1 person being disappointed. It happens I guess . The view is great and the live music was enjoyable. The service was a little slow but overall it was a good experience, at least for 80% of our group.
google avatar

Megan G.

Yelp
When you review as many tiki bars as I do, and you go to the home of the rum runner you really want a great tiki bar experience. Sadly, as far as tiki bars, this misses every mark by which a tiki bar can be measured - tropical drinks in tiki mugs, dark kitsch tiki atmosphere, zero TVs, tropical music not too loud. If you're looking for one of the soggy dollar beach bars though this is a find. Staff is super friendly and the mixed drinks are well made. Except the rum runner which now comes out of the boozy slushy machines. Tragic! Please go back to making a great hand crafted rum runner for all the children who want to enjoy what the original drink was meant to be.

Anabell G.

Yelp
The service in this bar has been exceptional, Adalberto is an outstanding bartender, absolutely great customer service and our experience definitely improved once he came in. Drinks were great, experience is amazing. You need more bartenders like this guy!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
The food isn't bad, but the service blew. I asked them 3 different times to leave our food alone when they tried clearing it while we were still eating and they ignored us and took it anyway. Ridiculous, the blonde woman with short hair has a massive attitude problem. We won't be back.
google avatar

Eddika P.

Yelp
This place was amazing. It's one of the restaurants inside of cheeca lodge. We had dinner elsewhere so we just got drinks and dessert here ! The vibe was lovely but the seaweed at low tide is dangerous to the nostrils . I was here with family but this was definitely a romantic spot !
google avatar

Vivina B.

Yelp
I love the remodeled Tiki Bar, I had not been there in years. It looks really nice and the service was great!
google avatar

Valencia L.

Yelp
This place is very relaxing; the beach is connected to the bar, they can bring drinks and food to the beach. Very clean and the service was fantastic. You can see the beautiful sunset.
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't been to this tiki bar in years. Was awesome 10 years ago. Two bartenders and approximately 15 people. Jordan the bartender was slow to welcome, get drinks and the check. Had a crappy attitude and said we are busy. I'd hate to see how the service would be if it was busy. 15 people at a bar with two bartenders is not busy. It's not a tiki bar anymore. Wouldn't waste my time going here again. Key lime colada wasn't good (according to Jordan) and out of Budlight beer. What?!?.
google avatar

Hal L.

Yelp
Great views, OK food and horrible service. There was one waiter and one food runner working hard. I have no idea what the other 3 waitresses and hostess were doing. Won't be going back.
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
Jasmine was wonderful at the tiki bar. We loved our hotel and how close the bar is to walk to. We had great food and great service!
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
Cool little outdoor dive bar at the marina, perfect after a long day of fishing! When I think of Florida this bar is exactly what comes to mind. As a matter of fact, I reflect back on the great drinks great views and super cool tiki bar beach club on a daily basis and cannot wait to go back!
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
The bartenders are awesome. Drinks prices threw the roof. Lol. Atmosphere was good but will definitely pre drink
google avatar

Pamela S.

Yelp
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! The views alone are worth the stop, but the food, drinks, and service will bring us back! Some of the best fish tacos I have ever had and my friends raved about their food and frozen drinks. The bathrooms were also impeccable. So much so, that we stopped there (just to go to the bathrooms on our way back from Key West the next day).

Yelp
When you're buried in snow, daydreaming about that perfect tiki bar overlooking the ocean, this is that place! Breezy coconut trees and tiki torches surround the natural curves of this casual patio bar. Kayakers, stand up paddle boarders, the occasional manatee or turtle...lots of bird life. Bring your camera and selfie stick for the gorgeous photos you'll take of the idyllic boat dock. There's live music Thursday and Friday nights, and it's a great mix of locals and tourists. Since this bar is part of the larger Cheeca Lodge complex, there's always a lively scene under the thatch roof. Bartenders here have longevity, so sidle up to the bar, grab a cold beverage and talk story with this eclectic crew! Maggie and Juan are especially notable for their local lore and funny stories. There's a full menu of spirits, wines and brews so you can probably have any form of bitter, whiskey, trendy drink in addition to the standards. As far as food, you can get everything from thin pizza to ahi poke so there's plenty here to please everyone. The Greek salad is awesome; the mushroom pizza is a standout! The playlists can be a little random but hey you can't listen to jimmy buffet 24/7. Cheers!!
google avatar

Meagan S.

Yelp
Great place to grab an after dinner drink and dessert. Bartenders were super friendly and make a killer Old Fashioned. Prices are very reasonable for how nice the resort this is located in is. Next time we are in islamorada, we will be back! Can't beat drinking whiskey in a tiki hut with the ocean right behind you.
google avatar

Mili L.

Yelp
Beautiful place. Live Music. Horrible service. Understaff. I ordered a ceviche that was never delivered to my table. The 1 and only Server on a Saturday night was chatting around, sitting around not paying attention to the customers.
google avatar

Sha Juniper O.

Yelp
This is such a rad spot! Beautiful views, rad staff, and great food. Get the fish of the day tacos! The Cobb salad is also über delicious. & def ask for Alli or Jayme. We loved them!
google avatar

Mario R.

Yelp
One of the best times I've ever had was in this tiny strip of bars on Isla Morada. It also happens to have a great buffet restaurant nearby, so it's a win win! One thing I will say is to stay away from the touristy frozen drinks. That is, unless you enjoy heartburn!

BL W.

Yelp
Amazing Rum Runner. It's a must! The food was standard but service was amazing. Must stop on the way to Key West.
google avatar

Christian T.

Yelp
Nice spot to enjoy a brew during sunset. Happy hour special was pretty good! And nice atmosphere
google avatar

Stanley S.

Yelp
Started with the oyster appetizers and than went with the Grouper sandwich while Julie tried the crab sandwich. Friendly service and cool breeze added to the pleasure of great company.
google avatar

Larry I.

Yelp
Terrible. Choose any of the other waterfront bars, and enjoy your day! It's better to go thirsty than to stop by here.
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
Love the Updates! Best view and best bar stock in the Middle Keys, hands down. A HUGE improvement since my last visit here a year ago. Hurray for real bartenders and not the Island refugees of old!

Kristina G.

Yelp
Andrea the bartender is amazing. As a restaurant manager I watched her speed and guest service for hours. She was attentive and accommodating even with horribly annoying people pestering her. Keep her or I'll steal her to Miami!
google avatar

Kathryn J.

Yelp
CLOSED! TOO BAD, we really wanted to try the Rum Runner here. Supposedly originated here, the world's best. Trying the other place located a few feet away. JAY'S Raw bar @ Post Card Inn.
google avatar

Valerie T.

Yelp
Have you ever watched Bar Rescue? I have been in this bar for 30 minutes and I am waiting for the guy from the show to walk in any minute. The world famous Rum runner is not prepared by the staff but comes from an ice machine. Like most drinks. It is low (and cold) season so few tourists are there. I am guessing that it only attracts the peopke from the nearby hotel. But a single woman like me do not feel comfortable because of a group of heavily drunk and loud guys run the show and nobody except 2 waitresses around to check if everything is OK. Music..., oh boy...... A country guy with a guitar who believes he is funny while he is insulting women. No wonder all women here walk out after 5 minutes.... So much history.... So far away from the golden age...
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
We were waiting for our room to be ready and decided to hang out here.....wow! Amazing drinks and food! Key Lime Pie Cocktail tasted just like Key Lime Pie, Blueberry Mojito was amazing, and one of the best Lemon Drop Martinis I have ever had! We ordered Conch Fritters and the Lobster Quesadilla....awesome! We were so relaxed and happy there that we decided to come back later that night and eat dinner there! Had the Lobster Grilled Cheese....can I have one of these everyday? Wow! And then the Lobster Pizza! Omg the lobster! They don't skimp on the lobster!
google avatar

Sean B.

Yelp
This is a must stop in Islamorada with the original Rum Runner here or turn it into a Pain in the Ass with the mixture of a Piña Colada. Also they have super cheap beer for HH 4-7 and the view of the Ocean is just amazing. When they have live music, the bands are usually great rock bands!
google avatar

Van P.

Yelp
I included a review of this bar in my review of the Cheeca Lodge, but the experience was so bad, it is worth the effort to double up. Keep in mind that I was paying $599 per night to have a room in the Lodge. So, my expectations were high. Service at the Tiki is non-existent. AJ, one of the bartenders has zero personality. He was rude, surly, and disinterested. He made it clear that he did not want to be there. He should be a Comcast rep, as bartending is clearly not his forte. A good bar is a necessity for me in a nice hotel. And the Tiki bar is located in such an area as to be the most inviting bar. But the service is miserable. And, I can't blame it all on AJ. He just happened to be the one bartender that actually acknowledged our presence. The others always seemed to be to busy doing something else. Who's running this place? Comcast probably needs management help too.

Courtney M.

Yelp
So the tiki bar was good service and the drinks are strong. The service is super fast and it's cool that you could sit on the ocean and see manatees and different fish. The drinks are a little pricey but it's worth going
google avatar

Dean K.

Yelp
Had dinner with the kids there tonight. Our server (did not get her name) was excellent and very helpful. She pretty much knew everything on the menu and made a number of recommendations. Enjoyed the blackened fish, cheeseburger and a California Sushi roll. We destroyed the gelato brownie after the meal. View was spectacular overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
google avatar

Wendy L.

Yelp
Absolutely ridiculous that we were not allowed to come in bc to visit the tiki bar because the resort was full. Cheeca not accommodating to past guests!!! Absolutely not acceptable!!! Ma guests told to come back in a week. We won't be here. Ridiculous!!
google avatar

Yelp
The wedding party stayed at Cheeca Lodge, and with the Tiki Bar being located in the resort by the pool, we frequented it quite a bit. We stayed elsewhere to give the wedding party some privacy; but, nonetheless, we spent quite a bit of daytime hours here. Since we did not stay there overnight, my comments reflect Tiki Bar only. We ate there a few times and food was delicious. The thing I liked best is they have menus for each of the resort's restaurants...so, in a group of 8, we were all able to find something we were craving. All of our meals were delicious, albeit pricey. However, the 10%-15% extra spent was more than offset by the convenience of leaving the resort! All of our servers were outstanding, with Kali by far being our favorite. She was bubbly, outgoing, and made us feel more like locals than tourists. The atmosphere is my only critique. As the name suggests, it's a tiki hut on the beach, with fabulous views of the water. However - and I hope the management reads this - the interior needs two things. First of all, fix the darn fans! One night, it was 92 degrees with a zillion percent humidity and only 1 of the 6 or so fans worked :( We mentioned something to the bartender, and his response was "they haven't worked in 3 years...it's a running joke here." Love the honesty; yet when you charge $400+ per night for rooms, there must be some cash in the budget for maintenance. Secondly, 2 of the 5 days we were there the TVs did not work. There was a message saying the satellite was out. I've experienced this during storms and what not...the skies were crystal clear though. Maybe it's time go with cable???

Yelp
Lobster grilled cheese & blueberry Mojito are awesome. Grilled cheese is messy but overflowing with lobster meat. Smoked almonds are a nice complimentary snack as well.
google avatar

Mario A.

Yelp
Great Drinks and staff was willing to accommodate. Evan was great. Drinks were great. Ladies were very nice. Lobster Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Brie cheese was AMAZING. Best thing on the Island. The wind and the view was very relaxing. The wings and Pizzas are also great choices. Going back again.

Yelp
Hi I went with my mother and father to the cheeca lodge and the first thing we did was get a drink. So we went to the tiki bar,and we sat at the bar and at the time I was ten so they said I couldn't sit be cause you had to be 21 or older so we went to a table a server helped us and in a minute we had a tall cold glass of water. We said we didn't want to eat we gust wanted drinks They made me a no alcohol drink and they were great. Later we got the same drinks in plastic cups and went to the pool and they were great. later we got sorbet and warm chocolate cake. 4/5 would rate 5/5 but didn't eat the food. Written 7/21/1.

Yelp
We ate here with the kids to kill some time before check in and kill some time we did. We were there for a little over 2 hours for lunch. My wife ordered the fish tacos and they came out excellent. Three tacos piled high with mahi, fresh ingredients, and a very tasty sauce. She also ordered their nonalcoholic "nojito". She thought it was delicious. I had some serious questions about their decision to make up for the lack of alcohol by loading it with sugar. I ordered the fish dip with pita. It was fine and just the right amount of food for a lunch a little on the light side. Still nothing to write home about. Our kids are young so nothing very interesting here, kids chicken tenders with fries. They seemed to like them. We also got an order of the Parmesan and Rosemary fries for the table. While they were tasty, they were expensive and not really worth the premium over a normal order of fries. All in all the food deserves four stars. Now comes the negative part. The service was lackluster. I understand that we are on island time and that we need to be able to take it easy and just relax. That fact is probably all that stopped me from getting a manager on several occasions throughout the meal. I went a solid 45 minutes without a drink refill, i had to ask three different people for a high chair before we got one brought to the table. We were long done with our meal before the check came and had another 20 minute wait for someone to come by and grab it. All in all the experience was fine. The view cannot be beat looking out over the ocean. The food was better than average, and the service was below average. The prices were a bit high, but again, we are in the islands, such things are to be expected. We probably won't eat here again but that has more to do with all the other options in the area we are excited to try.

Yelp
Delicious mahi mahi sandwich!! Great service and Sylvens was a great bartender - fun loving and personable!! Definitely will go back!

Yelp
Food was good. Service was ok. Servers were a little difficult to understand. The Huevos Rancheros breakfast was served cold which was unfortunate. The rustica pizza was good. The views are absolutely beautiful.
