Best Dishes D.C. Editors Ate This Week: October 9 | Eater DC

"As a year-round tom yum soup fan, I’ve quickly learned that not all are created equal. The fiery version at H Street’s Tiki Garden Thai Street Food is on point and didn’t skimp on the vegetables bobbing inside. A quartet of steamed dumplings come jam-packed with chicken, pork, and shrimp. I only wish I ordered an extra container of its sweet soy for later. Even though I did delivery, I can attest its sit-down sanctuary — complete with a patio, tropical cocktails in fish-shaped glassware, and fun tiki decor — is a great escape from the city. And its current government shutdown special is a good one: Along with a 15-percent discount for federal employees, kids can eat for free." - Tierney Plumb

Best Thai Restaurants in D.C. | Eater DC

"This cute corner spot joined H Street NE last summer with a catch-all assortment of opening Thai dishes. Try the veggie or rocket shrimp spring rolls, chive dumplings, minced laab (chicken, duck, or pork), gyoza, satay lemongrass, and papaya salads. Section of noodles and fried rice, curries, and stir-fry orders round out the list." - Missy Frederick

We were fortunate to have this delicious restaurant just a couple of blocks down from where we were staying. The atmosphere is true tiki style, and the Thai food is absolutely wonderful. We showed up without reservations and fortunately were able to get in, as they do quite a rousing bit of business. In fact there to go orders are stacked up on a table, and there’s an endless stream of delivery guys coming to get them. All a testament to the quality and flavor of the food they provide. There were four of us and we ate family style sharing the sautéed brussels sprouts and veggie spring rolls. Everything was exactly on point. The brussels sprouts were a bit charred on the outside and slightly soft with a good crisp center. The spring rolls were well-made and well filled. For our mains, we opted for the Panamg curry, drunken noodles, and massaman curry. Each dish had a great layering of flavors and spices with exactly the heat level we had ordered. Our server was friendly and efficient without being intrusive and if we lived in the area, this would be one of our go to regular places. We highly suggest you try this great spot out if you’re in the area or if you’re not in the area… Get on the bus and get there .

A friend recommended this restaurant to us. So glad we stopped by! We ordered some of everything. I had the Tom kha soup with tofu. It was rich and tangy--I loved it. My partner got the spicy eggplant dish with broccoli, which was very good (A). The salmon curry was wonderful. The crispy catfish and the and Pad Thai with shrimp were a B+. We will be back.

Google
Delicious food and happy hour is a great steal. I enjoyed the tom yum noodle bowl. The dish was very flavorful and a great price. I would order again. I was not a fan of the crab rangoon, but the other appetizers were delicious. My friends enjoyed the fried rice and flat noodle dishes as well. The mango martini is a bit sweet but for me, that is ideal. I’d recommend going!

Google
Omg!!! This restaurant was a freaking gem! I landed in DC on Friday craving Thai food and stumbled across Tiki Garden on Google Maps. They stay open a little later than most spots, which was perfect. Now let's be real, parking wasn't easy, but that's just DC. The restaurant itself? Super cute and intimate with tiki hut vibes that make it feel like a little escape. I came with a party of 6, we were seated right away even though the place was packed. The service was phenomenal and our food came out shockingly fast. Let's talk about the drinks: I ordered the Bangkok Mule: chili vodka, Thai rum, lime juice, and ginger beer, and I swear, it was a 15/10. You could taste every single layer of flavor. So well balanced! Appetizers: * Brussels sprouts - Flavor was there, but they needed more time in the pan. Still a solid 6/10. * Fried chicken wings - 10/10! So crispy, and the sweet chili glaze...I have no words. These were elite. * Tom Yum Soup - 10/10! Rich, tangy, and comforting with fresh tomatoes and a broth that stayed hot to the last spoonful. Entrées: * Spicy Basil Fried Rice - 11/10 Chef's kiss! Spicy, aromatic, and perfectly balanced. * Salmon Curry - 20/10, no exaggeration. The piece of salmon was almost as big as my hand and cooked to perfection. The peanut curry sauce? Life-changing! Easily my favorite part of the whole meal. Every dish popped with bright, bold flavors that felt both comforting and exciting. A few people in my group were trying Thai food for the first time, and they are literally hooked for life, they didn't stop talking about this place until we left DC on Monday! Tiki Garden is officially a must-visit every time I'm in the city. Authentic, flavorful, fast, and fun...don't sleep on it!

Google
This service was good and the food was tasty. Not my favorite Thai restaurant, but it’s fine in a pinch. I for the chicken eggplant. They don’t really have minced chicken on the menu, but they were able to do it for me.

Jazmyne W.

Google
I ordered the crab Rangoon, garlic shrimp, and tiki coffee (spin on an espresso martini). Everything was delicious! The food and drink quality was comparable to a fine dining experience. I will be back with friends!

Tram N.

Google
Had lunch here with family and really enjoyed it. We ordered pad thai, basil fried rice, red curry, tom yum soup, crying tiger, and mango sticky rice. The pad thai, fried rice, and curry were all really good. The tom yum was a bit more sour than expected, and the crying tiger came in pretty big pieces so it was a little tough to chew. Mango sticky rice was warm and really satisfying. Food came out fast, service was super friendly, and prices were very reasonable. Would definitely recommend.

Google
I was turned off for about 2-3 years from Chinese and Thai spots. Most places the food is good tasting but just too oily and it can turn my stomach with so much of that mixing in my mouth. Honest statement. I seen the reviews of this place and also had a family member that went here the other night. You won’t be disappointed. The price you pay for the portion you received felt like I was scamming the restaurant. In a positive way! the food is fresh and tasted great! I think I honestly found my go to spot for fried rice and protein. If it’s your first time get the curried fried rice. You can add chicken or shrimp. I was already full from eating but the smell made me keep wanting more.

Yelp
Food was impressive especially the chives dumpings was phonemenal! Def returning to this place for Thai food, good recommendation into DC!

Farheen O.

Yelp
Just had dinner here and the food exceeded my expectations. The service was exceptional! I will definitely be back.

Yelp
The food was so good I didn't even stop to take pictures!! Ambiance is lowkey, dark; and hole in the wall vibe, but it's clean! Food is absolutely delicious especially for the price. Tom yum soup noodles, pad Thai; drunken noodles, pad see ew we're all delicious. Don't let the lackluster visual appeal discourage you from the pad Thai and pad see ew - the taste is amazing. Scallion pancakes: a little underdone in the middle potstickers: nothing special. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Love coming here! We've had dine in and carry out and both times we were in love. I've had the pad Thai with tofu twice and it's was phenomenal both times. It was awesome since it was gluten free and vegetarian. My partner got the pineapple cashew fried rice both times and loved it as well. For our carry out order, we had a friend join us who ordered Pad Prikking and it was really great too! When dining in, we had loved the happy hour specials and being able to sit in the window. The staff was super attentive and we can't wait to keep coming back!

Yelp
We tried this Thai place recently for takeout because we just have never had great Thai in DC and the reviews were outstanding so we thought, why not? I'm glad we took a chance because we were not disappointed! The pad Thai was some of the best I've had in DC (we've tried quite a few), the drunken noodles was delicious as well. I may get it a little less spicy next time though! The Thai gyoza was really flavorful and the sauce that comes with it was some amazing!! I think we found our new go to takeout for Thai!
google avatar

Jazzmyne T.

Yelp
The surprise i didn't know I needed! Everything was delicious! Excellent customer service and super attentive. Decent prices . Come check this place out!

Yelp
Yeszir!! I live for a good ole BOGO! lol UE was offering BOGO spring rolls (among other things) and I couldn't resist. You get 3 per order and they arrived perfectly crispy, a little flaky, packed full of veggies and larger than most spring rolls. DELICIOUS! I may order a few more before the week is out. I also had the thai iced tea and panang curry chicken (medium heat). HIT. THE. SPOT. Drink coupled with panang - Perfect balance of sweet and spicy. Tea was cold, creamy, deep earthy spice. Panang gave a creamy spicy (heat) filling finish. I will say, without the appetizer (ie just the panang) wouldn't have felt like a full meal so consider getting an app when you order. They have a few good ones from which to choose. Check them out!

Yelp
I was contemplating between 4 and 5 stars here. I wish yelp had 'half stars.' Take out: I've ordered take out from here twice and have been very pleased with my experience both times. I had the pad see ew and spicy eggplant. Both were very good. Dine in: I came in for lunch yesterday and had a good experience. I ordered a Thai tea and pad Thai noodles. The Thai tea was delicious and the pad Thai was also very good. The pad Thai did taste slightly burnt but not so much so that i didn't enjoy the dish. Pad Thai 4/5 Thai tea: 5/5 Ambiance: clean. Service: good. It wasn't busy so there's one FOH person. He handled front desk, serving and to go orders just fine. He checked on me throughout my time there. Menu: they do NOT have a lunch menu. I read from previous yelpers that they ordered off the lunch menu, but unfortunately they don't have a lunch menu anymore. Other: i came in to eat and work, but right now they do not have WiFi. I was able to use my hotspot just fine. I will be back to try other menu items as i have enjoyed everything I've eaten so far.

Yelp
Cozy Thai spot on h street with a lot of flavor. We both especially enjoyed both noodle dishes. Highly recommend stopping by for lunch or dinner. The service was helpful and efficient as the restaurant is small so they want to quick turn the tables over. Check out Tiki Garden for some amazing Thai dishes!

Marilyne k.

Yelp
I absolutely recommend this place. It's a cozy, small Restaurant with great service and food. We went in without a reservation and were able to get a seat. Food came quickly and was really good. In a town where everyone charges $18-20 for a drink it was a breath of fresh air to see the cocktail and food prices
google avatar

An A.

Yelp
The food came out quickly. While there is a small bar with seating, there are no alcoholic drinks at this time since they are working on getting their liquor license. I'm curious to see what kind of drinks they may have in the future! The spicy basil fried rice was actually spicy! Sometimes basil fried rice can be bland but not this one. Not oily with individual rice grains and the plentiful vegetables were well cooked, not mushy. I wish it had more Thai basil but that's my only complaint. I'd happily eat it again! The drunken noodles were sweet and spicy with great flavor. The portion seemed small in comparison to the basil fried rice but be assured that it was more than a portion you would get elsewhere! Pricing was excellent! The service was really helpful if you asked a question and came by pretty soon after we were seated. Bathrooms were clean and easy to find.

Evan G.

Yelp
Food was really good and had the right spice. Drinks were so good too, definitely recommend the Bangkok Mule on a hot day. Staff were friendly and helpful. Nice bar too if you're dining alone.

Yelp
This isn't my first time eating here and somehow, it tastes even better every time! The Pad See Ew and Fried rice was our first dishes and we were hooked. I am so picky with Pad Thai and rarely order it because it is usually very dry and flavourless. Their Pad Thai is flavourful and not dry. The drunken noodles was also fantastic. The Muay Thai IPA was like an IPA meets Thai Iced Tea and we must have more. I didn't know what to expect with my cocktail but wow!

Yelp
I've been looking for a new Thai place that's not far after my usual go-to spot failed us one too many times. After looking on Yelp, I saw this place and it had great reviews. Even though it seemed new, we decided to give it a try. We went on a Saturday night and it was pretty quiet. Great for us because we were seated right away by the window. They don't have a liquor license just yet, so we ordered Thai Iced Teas and they were perfection. I always forget how good they are and this was no exception. We decided to share an appetizer and an entree. For the appetizer, we chose the chive dumplings, which I'd never heard of. They came out piping hot and were really delicious. For the entree, there were about five things we wanted to try, but we settled on the Kapao with chicken (and I added broccoli). It was super fresh and had a wonderful flavor. It wasn't spicy though, so I added some red peppers to kick it up. The service was great and we'll definitely be back to try more dishes.
google avatar

Nan B.

Yelp
Outstanding flavors in the Boat Soup and in my partner's green curry. Lychee martini was a new one and a tasty one! If you get the chance to sit in the window, it's one of the observation points for people watching I've come by!

Yelp
For some weird reason, I avoided this new Thai spot along H Street NE because of its name. I am just not into a "tiki" vibe (or drinks). Despite this, my wife suggested we visit and I am so glad she did. I am a HUGE fan of Tiki Garden Thai Street Food. Here's why. 1) Food: The menu includes all the suspects of a Thai restaurant from red curry to tom ka gai soup to papaya salad. Every single dish was perfect and each balanced spice well- spicy, but not overpowering. My green curry was among the best I've had in D.C. Same with my wife's drunken noodles. Our six-year-old daughter loved her Pad Thai. She even went up to the owners to tell them how good it was! 2) Drinks: As they wait for their liquor license, they have an array of non-alcoholic drinks. The Thai iced tea is refreshing- not too sweet, but sweet enough. 3) Price: Our total bill of three entrees and two Thai iced teas came to $50. 4) Service: From start to finish, it was professional, kind, and warm. During our visit, a woman in drugs came in acting very erratic. The staff interacted with her in a gentle, yet protective way. It made us respect the owners. 5) Space: It's one large room with a bar in the back. It's kept clean and inviting.

Yelp
The curry puffs were flaky and had a lot of nice curry flavor 4/5 Drunken noodles could use more sauce flavor but I am in love with how bouncy the texture of the noodle is itself! I've never had drunken noodles with such nice noodles 4/5 Mango sticky rice had a thick jiggly layer of sweet coconut cream on top. Overall was good but I've had better in other places 4/5

Yelp
I love a cute neighbor restaurant and was fortunate to stumble onto this spot while in DC for work. The food was fantastic and I appreciated them bring everything out hot and fresh. The staff was attentive and incredibly kind. Would recommend - leftovers were great too!

Mackenzie Y.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Coming from California I am very particular about my Thai food. This place was phenomenal the soup was hot, spicy and sour. The shrimp dish with house made chili sauce was amazing. The cocktail pictured below was so good I am attempting to recreate it here in my kitchen in LA.
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
The customer service was superb! Upon entering we were greeted by staff and seated immediately. It's a small intimate setting. The jazz playing in the background definitely set the tone. The food was absolutely delicious. Not one complaint. The crab fried rice, shrimp rolls and spring rolls were all divine. I definitely recommend Tiki. I will be back very soon to try the rest of the menu!
google avatar

Landres B.

Yelp
This restaurant is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and certainly worth checking out. It is very reasonably priced and has consistently been busy. I'd be lying if I said anything was particularly "mindblowing," but everything was correct, very tasty, and the service was great. The space is also quite comfortable and not loud even though it was full. I can't wait to see what continues once they can start serving alcohol!

Dolly T.

Yelp
Excellent choice. Great service, excellent FRESH food, and great prices. The staff was very accommodating to our party of 6 after a matinee at close by theatre. It is always wonderful to find a place on H street that is also clean , both interior and exterior. Must go back.
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
Pretty solid pad Thai, Mai Thai was a bit lighter than I prefer--but not bad at all! Very fast service, nice restaurant ambience.
google avatar

Candice S.

Yelp
I had an awesome dining experience here recently. The staff was super sweet. The vibe was very nice and calm and quiet. Each table had a little candle, which lit up the room very nicely. The food came out steaming, hot and quickly. The spring rolls were super crunchy and tasty. The pad Thai was amazing. I would eat here every day if I could!
google avatar

Genesis D.

Yelp
When I first came here, there was a 20% off discount for their soft opening so my family and I went quite a few times in one week. Since then we've been going regularly every couple weeks. The quality of their food stays the same deliciousness. They've hired more staff to meet their demands so wait times don't get long. They are consistently busy with online orders. I've never ordered anything I didn't like. Their Thai iced tea and mango juice are our favorites. Served in tiki faced glasses to match the tiki theme of the restaurant.
google avatar

Breanne R.

Yelp
I ate here yesterday for the first time and had the most flavorful Thai fried rice I ever had! I was pleasantly surprised with my experience at this place! Also ordered the fried brussel sprouts which were tasty. The crab rangoons were on the sweeter side, but also pretty good. Our server was friendly, but service was a little slow. The restaurant is pretty small and crowded, but the food made up for the wait. I didn't get to try the drinks, but I will definitely be back for their happy hour!
google avatar

Bobbi D.

Yelp
I'm so glad we have a cute new little restaurant on h st! The food is so good! I got the pad Thai and I'm a fan. Service was great. They did a 20% discount for the soft opening. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

ALANA H.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Great service and the Thai cuisine is second to none. I recommend the dumplings, Thai fried rice, and Panang Curry. If you are in the DC area it is definitely worth the trip. I will be back!

Teresa F.

Yelp
Everything was excellent. Great drinks, great food, great service, great ambiance. Jose really made us feel at home.

Yelp
What a gem on H street! We got their lunch special and it was such a good deal. The food was delicious, and sizable. The waiter might have also been the nicest man we'd ever met. He gave us great recommendations. We would 100% go here again and then again... and then again... and then some more.
google avatar

Patchararat D.

Yelp
Good service , enjoy my Thai food while visiting. I love Thai food. Enjoy my day walking around.
google avatar

Yelp
The food and the service were great. The server recommended new Thai plates and they didn't disappoint.
google avatar

Peggy W.

Yelp
I love this thai restaurant, the food is on point. So far I have been getting the food to go, but restaurant seems clean and nice. Would definitely come back again! One thing to note is that their medium spicy level is higher than other places I tried, but I still always enjoy it!
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
We sampled a wide variety of the menu and didn't encounter a single dish we did not LOVE. The satay skewers were definitely a stand out winner with their incredible peanut sauce. Papaya salad was fresh and perfectly spicy. The veggie spring rolls were superbly crunchy. We also tried the pad Thai and the drunken noodles. Both are winners. (Be warned, the drunken noodles are VERY spicy but so delicious.) Wouldn't have been a complete experience without some Thai tea and mango sticky rice. Both were the perfect sweet treat to finish the meal. Staff were very friendly and attentive; we felt very welcome. Overall, a wonderful experience and definitely a place we will be returning to in the future.
google avatar

Casey M.

Yelp
Food was authentic and cocktails were on point. Friendly service. Great location. Don't know what else I can say, Yelp is making me write more.
google avatar

Michaela N.

Yelp
I read the reviews and I was hopeful. I got there and it was such a cute vibe. I only picked up food, but everything was so cozy, I wanted to stay. The food was delicious! Drunken noodles is my first dish for any new Thai restaurant and they did not disappoint, and the pick up was prompt. I will be back often!
google avatar

Azaria B.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place and wow, am I glad I did. Great service and phenomenal food. The flavors are incredible. Will definitely be back here.

Kathleen W.

Yelp
Got food through Uber eats. I'm pretty picky about Thai food. Got drunken noodles, mango sticky rice and lemonade. The food was still hot when I got it and the mango stick rice was warm and delicious. Everything was amazing!
google avatar

Olivia C.

Yelp
Let me just start off by saying how much I loved this place. It was very clean and the staff we very quick and very nice. The food that I ordered was not only very quick but also delicious. I very much recommend you to go.
google avatar

Cat C.

Yelp
The drunken noodles were very bouncy and fresh! Very tasty dish! I subtracted one star because I did not care for the spring rolls.

Tristen S. W.

Yelp
The food, service, and ambiance are all good! This place is so good that I crave it now! It's to amazing! I highly recommend the spaghetti drunken noodle with chicken and thai gyoza, and the rocket shrimp rolls and the satay lemongrass are all my favorites!
google avatar

Kyla G.

Yelp
The food is fresh and yummy! After my first time trying it I had to get it again the next day LOL. Definitely my favorite Thai spot in the city now!
google avatar

Damany M.

Yelp
Cool spot with alot of potential being i attended during the soft opening. Coming from NYC we have so many Thai restaurants, so the ones out here have much to live up to. But so far Tiki Garden has been the best I've had in DC (so far). I had the usual "Drunken Noodle" which was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Shrimp and vegetables ratio was A-1. Fun fact:, they make there noodles from scratch. This restaurant is perfect for dates, lunch meetings or solo dolo eating. I can't wait to again and hopefully i won't eat the food before taking a pic of it.

Madmo 2.

Yelp
Food is good but some of the serving sizes are the smallest i have ever seen for a Thai restaurant.

S M.

Yelp
When IMM Thai closed, there was a Thai deficiency on H. I am very happy Tiki Garden has opened up. Chive dumplings were light, crispy, delicious. Tom Kha was flavorful and delicious. Service was great. Can't wait to try more.
google avatar

Riley R.

Yelp
Some of the best Thai food in DC! SO glad it's close to my house. A most welcome addition to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Tavian R.

Yelp
The curry puffs-- the best I've had in the DC area. So good. The other review that said the chicken satay was the best wasn't lying. It was so flavorful, moist, and satisfying. The sauce was amazing too. My only complaint would be that they should give you a full container for take out. The Panang curry.. the sauce and veggies were great but the beef tasted off. I would definitely come back for their food and try other things on the menu. I'm usually disappointed with Thai in Dc but this was an exception! Excited to see them become part of the H street corridor neighborhood.

Dana G.

Yelp
We have ordered takeout once and dined-in once. Great service. So far the cashew fried rice has been out favorite.

Kendra M.

Yelp
Love, love, love this new addition to H Street! We visited during their soft opening in September. They have a slightly limited menu during the soft opening, but they are also offering 20% off. We ordered the pork jerky, the tom yum noodle bowl with shrimp, spicy drunken noodles with beef, Thai iced tea, pineapple juice, and mango sticky rice. Our favorites were the tom yum and the spicy drunken noodles. The tom yum has dethroned Baan Siam as my favorite tom yum spot in the District. The beef in my noodles wasn't as tender as I like, so I would get another protein next time. Aside from that, the flavor and spice of the dish was perfect. I found the coconut cream on the sticky rice to be a little salty, but I would still order it again because the mango was perfectly ripe and the sticky rice was delicious. I wouldn't order the pork jerky again. My husband loved it, and I thought the dipping sauce hit all the right sweet and spicy notes, but the texture of the pork itself wasn't my favorite. Overall, I'd give them a 4.5 out of 5. I'm looking forward to our next visit -- the brussels sprouts looked amazing!

Lauren N.

Yelp
We ordered ted and green curry, drunken noodles, chicken larb,, and thai tea. Everything was delicious!
