TikkaTacoRito Wants to Be the Next Indian Fast Casual Chain | Eater Portland

"Opening July 1 at 1426 NW Glisan Street in the Pearl District, this fast-casual concept from Hari Venka and his wife Aarthi Ethiraj translates Indian flavors into customizable Mexican formats like burritos, kati rolls, and bowls. A former engineer who has been a home cook since 2008, Venka developed the menu during the pandemic and aimed to make dishes that are simple, scalable, and familiar to diners — the menu was designed so no prior cooking experience is required to assemble items. Tortillas and roti are made in-house on a heated press (about 20 seconds from dough ball to finished bread) to serve as the foundation for burritos and kati wraps, and bowls/salads are filled with grains and proteins such as chicken, goat, and paneer that are marinated overnight in yogurt with a blend of chili powder, fenugreek leaves, and cumin. Proteins are cooked in a cylindrical claypot oven (400–500°F) that uses gas plus a few coals to impart a smoky flavor; the oven fits 12–14 skewers, each holding five or six chicken breasts. Creative items include taco bombs inspired by panipuri (deep-fried hollow shells filled with taco ingredients and a chutney-like sauce for an "explosion of flavor") and a "boba caviar" dish similar to sabudana khichdi made with tapioca pearls, and Venka notes his own family's habit of rolling food up — even his second-grader prefers things wrapped — as part of the concept's appeal." - Janey Wong

The Odor Complaint Controversy Is Heating Up With A New Lawsuit | Eater Portland

"I note that TikkaTacoRito, described as a purveyor of fine tandoor dishes and South Asian–infused fare, will open a new location at 1436 NW Glisan Street with a hopeful July 1 opening and a few new menu items including “taco bombs” and “boba caviar,” and owner Hariprasath Venkatram says both tortilla and roti will be made fresh for every order in under a minute." - Paolo Bicchieri

A Chipotle style restaurant with an Indian twist. Basically, you can get tacos, nachos, even pani puri shells with a bunch of fillings and your choice of protein (which includes paneer). That was an interesting way to eat Indian food! We enjoyed the food. Although our experience was a little marred by everything else. It is a small place with just a few tables. When we were there, there was only us and one other table occupied (both groups of 3). There was only one employee and he was 'assembling' all these things one by one on his own, which was taking a long time. The other group was waiting this whole time while our food was being 'assembled'. I am not sure if it was for that reason that the employee was feeling rushed, but he didn't even tell us about a lot of toppings that could be added - all those containers were covered when we were ordering. When all those additional toppings were being offered to the group after us, that is when we found out. And this was at a not-so-busy time (even though it was Saturday evening). I hope they are prepared for busier times. I would like to give it another chance where we can have a fuller experience, because it definitely is a unique concept!

Went here for lunch on a work day. Portland fusion style.Food was great, fresh and tasty. Service was great. The only thing that I think needs improvement is ventilation. Highly recommended.

Google
Interesting place, fusion. mexican indian. with a mini bar with cocktaiks! the Bowl and the Tandoor Box are awesome. The meats are indian style but it seams like the sauces / flavours and toppings are mexican inspired Staff are super nice, great service and friendly The tacos are pretty underwhelming because they are super plain and need some toppings so skip those. Otherwise its awesome. They have a buffet also ! what! amaze. its on (Friday and Saturday)

Google
Definitely different. Very "Portland" hybrid food. Got a paneer burrito, and it was DELICIOUS. Staff was super kind and helpful, and I definitely want to return. It's like Chipotle, but with a completely different flavor palette to put together something unique for you.

Absolutely delicious food. Yes, Michigan and z Indian fusion. Owner and staff are really friendly. Prices are great for the chance to enjoy something new and original. Vegan Options available too.

Google
The food and service were amazing, one of the best experiences I’ve had! They explained every ingredient in every dish and sauce, and provided samples to try. You can tell they’re passionate about making the food and experience amazing. The food was very filling and satisfying. Also, what an amazing fusion! I wish we had these in California where we’re from.

I would recommend not getting delivery from here. I feel I was overcharged and under delivered. the pizza was burnt on one side (not charred, burnt) and undercooked on the other, on top of being $8 over the cost on their website. the mini-naan "sliders" did not match the description on the app, and the "jalapeno poppers" ended up being a single, sad, under battered jalapeno filled with ???. it sounds like a lot of people who have gone into this place seem to like it, and I hope that they at least continue to do well by their face to face customers. I may even give them a shot in person at some point, but absolutely never again delivered.

Google
Don’t get me wrong. Shadow is a great bartender and person and really informative but the food that was served to us was almost disrespectful to both Indian and Mexican cultures. The driest and the most under whelming Kati rolls of your life. Some dry tortillas (which they call roti) with curry and shredded cheese. Couldn’t have more than bite of it, it was astonishingly bad. EDIT- they gave me a refund and I do believe I did not try them at their best hour. I will be back to try other items cause I love the concept.

Yelp
Bad. Very very bad. "Margherita" "Pizza": -5/10, an absolute travesty. Nothing about this was Margherita. Nothing about this was pizza. Pizza was about an inch thick with an awful, soupy mix of toppings. The green stuff isn't basil, tastes saag-related. Naan: -2/10, soft and uncooked. Tasted like gas. Tacos: 0/10, confusing and horrible. Bad flavors, bad textures, no synergies between ingredients. Inexplicable presence of raw carrot. Gulab Jamun: 0/10, dry, predominant flavor was the can the syrup came in. Tandoor Box: 3/10, paneer was presentable, black beans ice cold, rice was fine, salsa was bad and unnecessary. Quesadilla: 6/10, again, inexplicable raw carrots. Hard to screw up black beans and cheese though. Avoid.

Yelp
Nicest service, delicious flavors...you gotta try this place. They have a flexible menu of ingredients for you to create a delicious Indo-Mexican blend of flavorful, aromatic bliss. If you want a unique flavor and aromatic experience, and if you want to support a friendly, enthusiastic entrepreneur, support this business. Great value too. Got a lot of food for a reasonable price. SUPPORT THIS ONE!

Yelp
This is a yummy new restaurant with a great concept. The owners were so good about explaining items on the menu, letting us try things if we uncertain if we wanted to order it. We were very impressed with the service, quality of food, portions and price. If you are looking for a fast casual restaurant with a unique flair, give this a try.

Yelp
Had this for a work event today and it was phenomenal. It was a mixture of various meats, rice, beans and a green salsa and I was very impressed. Can't wait to try more.
