The Best Hotels in Kauai of 2024

"Located within the 450-acre Hōkūala resort, this property offers residential-style accommodations with multiple bedrooms, lanais, and sea views. It includes a Jack Nicklaus golf course, infinity pool, and oceanfront dining." - Travel + Leisure Editors

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii

"Not sure where or how to begin? Let Hawaii’s locals lead the way. “We know Hawaii. We want to show you the right places to visit,” says Joy Stedman, the business development executive at Timbers Kaua‘i at Hōkūala and a Native Hawaiian, born and raised in the state. She suggests talking to a hotel concierge or a local travel specialist who can direct you to expert guides or book activities for you that do not disrupt (and might even help) neighboring communities. Not only will you be traveling more carefully, your visit—any time of year—will likely be all the more memorable and special for it."

"Perched on a cliff with panoramic ocean views, Timbers Kauai is serene and cozy, perfect for families and long stays. The forty-seven vacation rentals are multibedroom residences with the comfiest beds and sofas, beautiful high-end kitchens, spacious lanais, iPad concierge service, and luxury amenities that make everything just so easy. The property is stretched across 450 oceanfront acres, and the two infinity pools really will trick you into thinking they’re spilling into the Pacific. We highly recommend a tour of the property’s organic farm, from which the restaurant, Hualani’s, sources ingredients like sugarcane, bananas, and papayas. And the spa does a transformative Hawaiian lomi lomi massage—don’t skip the heated coconut oil scalp massage at the end."

Timbers Kauai Ocean Club & Residences

"With the longest stretch of oceanfront golfing in all of Hawaii, plus 17 miles of hiking trails and access to Kalapaki Beach, Timbers is a refreshing addition to the hotel scene on the southeast coast of Kauai and barely 10 minutes from Lihue Airport. The property is spread across 450 last-to-be-developed oceanfront acres on Kauai. The architecture is by Poss Architecture + Planning in Aspen, Colorado, and the buildings, which incorporate anything from one- to four-bedroom accommodations, take full advantage of vast views of the ocean and the deeply green Hau'pu mountains in the distance. The Farm at Hokuala ensures honest field-to-table ingredients at Hualani's Restaurant. On-site Adventure Guides can be arranged for tours of the south shore, including the chance for snorkelers to catch a glimpse of the state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua'a, in Poipu."

The property is new and located in a secluded and scenic area, but the nearest beach is a bit away (5 min drive). The infrastructure and location are great but if you are travelling with family looking for a resort like experience this is not the place to be in, there is only 1 restaurant on the property (so limited options), there is no 24x7 room service, and your best bet is the nearest grocery store (Safeway) 11 min(drive) away. Personnel wise, it is hit or miss, some employees are great, others are less experienced. Housekeeping staff is a big problem, we had a 3 bed/3.5 bath apartment, they cleaned only 1 bathroom and “forgot” to clean the rest!! Next day they didn’t empty all the trash cans in the apartment!! When we asked for linen change on used beds, the front desk person said we do that weekly once(sanitation/hygiene?) and we can do daily for a charge, then he checked with a superior perhaps and then said we will do it, no charges sorry 😊 – hence my comment less experienced/new staff). In a nutshell, property is 5 stars for infra/scenery, great for a retirement/secluded living if you get all your grocery in. But if you are looking for pampered, 24x7 room service, and on demand service which we are used to in 5-star hotels, you will be disappointed. They need more time and training for the staff to reach the level of service expected from a conventional 5 star resort. This is a beautiful place for a daytime visit, think like a park/beach, eat lunch or dinner and go back home after taking lot of pictures, night stay/longer, there are better options.

Google
All items were top notch and great portions. It's expensive as expected, but we felt it was worth it for one of our vacation meals.

Google
I didn't stay at this hotel but I walked around there and got lost and the guy at the service desk was very nice and let us stay and wait there till we were found by our group. It's a beautiful place with a light house and beautiful beach

Google
This is a singular destination experience in Hawaii. The views are stunning, the accommodations are fantastic and the team members are incredibly friendly. There is a multitude of on site activities and one of the finest Nicklaus courses in the state. You can't go wrong here, the entire family will love it!

Google
Perfection. Rooms are beautiful. Great pools. Magnificent ocean views. Right on the coast. The restaurant is fantastic. Best place I’ve been to in Hawaii.

Google
Gorgeous view of the ocean. We wound up in here by accident. We wanted to grab a happy hour drink in the area and by accident (and a few wrong turns) we found ourselves in this swanky hotel and residence. We went into the lobby/check-in area which hosted the bar and enjoyed some happy hours cocktails while taking in the beautiful view.

Google
The drive into this place is like driving to another planet. Then there’s the view from the restaurant. So beautiful! We came for brunch and it did not disappoint. Food was incredible, too. Not a bad dish in the group. Quiet and relaxing. What else do you need for a great brunch spot?

Google
Location is beautiful. If you are looking for a quiet and peaceful place on Kauai this is a great hotel/resort. The booking, check-in and checkout process left a lot to be desired. Rooms were switched at the last minute and during checkout additional charges were added. Its never a good feeling when you have to spend an hour at checkout getting things sorted out.

Yelp
I was thrilled to be invited by a friend who is an owner of this beautiful residence. I spent the day at the pool with her and I was disappointed by the service of the pool girls. The server who took care of us had a poor attitude and took very long for small orders like sparkling water and a plain Diet Coke. I believe her name was Kuuipo. There would be moments where she seemed upset to take care of us then be a total kiss a**! It seemed fake and forced when she would be "nice to us". Her work appearance didn't seem professional for the type of resort she worked at. Hair was a mess and stains on her work apparel. I didn't not enjoy her service and would not like to have an experience with her again. It felt like we were an inconvenience to her. Beautiful views but terrible pool girl.

Yelp
Dinner at Timber's in Lihue was absolutely amazing. If you're looking for great steak and lobster with an amazing view. You will not be disappointed. You get to experience the large ship sailing away. The vibe was definitely an A+. Service A+. Food A+.

Yelp
This review has been a long time coming. I was there for a week in both the summer time of 2021 and 2022, definitely missed it this year. Timbers is the absolute best place I've been at in Hawaii. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The unit we stayed in was clean, hygienic, sanitized..it was all amazing. We stayed in a 3 bedroom, which had 3.5 bathrooms..a lanai connected to the living room, and one of the bedrooms also had it's own private lanai. The infinity pool was where we spent most of our days. It felt like a private pool! There's something to be said for the guests who are owners. They legit are the types of people who look down at you, with their noses turned up. I cannot stand people like that, who think they are so entitled. But that aside, everything was perfection. They also have a farm so you can take a farm tour. One of the best parts is they have a shuttle to pick you up/drop you off at the airport but -- you can rent a car directly from them. No hassle, easy peasy. The only thing I would suggest is that they bring in some vegetarian/vegan options. They had nothing for us, but with a kitchen, we were at least able to cook! I really wish I could visit every year!

Yelp
We wanted to eat dinner on Tuesday afternoon but found that the only dinner was a Prix Fixe dinner. $115.00 per person. Ah, the view was nice but a little pricey for me. We were on Kauai for the day and that would have thrown the budget for 4 people. We had a drink at the bar and left for another location.

Yelp
Over the last year and a half, I have been fortunate enough stay at Timbers a total of 25 days. 10 days in the Summer of 2019 and just over 2 weeks this past November (2020). Truly grateful and feel blessed to be on the Garden Isle with the best accommodations on the island and the BEST staff. I wouldnt want to stay anywhere else. My best friend is an owner and has been since even before this property was built. She was literally all in on this place when there was only the foundation. I know because she text me a photo from there. Ha! We usually occupy 2 units in the Maliula Residences. The one I'm usually in faces the pool and the road in and hers always faces the ocean. It's always so peaceful and serene. Everything about our stay is memorable. From getting picked up at LIH by Randy, Jason or BJ to the amazing customer service at the front desk from Mele and Shella, I can tell you that the staff is top notch. You're treated like family and honestly, the feeling of Aloha is all I need whenever I'm on Kauai. It's unexpected but much appreciated. The units are spacious. Ours is a 3BR and 3.5 bath unit. It essentially has 2 master bedrooms with their own walk-in closets, elevated California King beds, soaking tub, spacious rain shower, separate toilet area, double vanities and private lanai in each. The rooms are huge. The beds are so comfortable. The lanais are just a peaceful escape and every view is amazing... The other BR has 2 queen beds and smaller full bath. The living room has a sofa bed, spacious common lanai, dining table for 8 and large kitchen with an island that has a dishwasher. All the appliances are Bosch and you even have a wine fridge, Bose sound bar and Belkin tablet in the living room at your disposal. The kitchen comes fully loaded. Too many things to list. All well though out and executed. There is a washer/dryer in the unit as well. Each room, including the living room has a ceiling fan. The pools are amazing. Both of them offer different things. The one in our area has 2 levels with waterfalls, a jump rock for the keiki and plenty of room to explore and wade around. I saw it being used as a training area for snorkeling to teach the guests one Summer... The other pool has 2 levels of infinity pools with a waterfall emptying in the smaller one below. The upper pool is huge and seemingly empties out into the ocean. It's really amazing to be there. You have the Pacific Ocean in full uninterrupted view as well as Ninini Point Lighthouse. Its stunning, really. The lounges at this pool are more comfortable. There is a good sized jacuzzi at each pool and there are outdoor showers as well. The activities are great. Bikes, bodyboards, surfboards, kayaks, snorkeling gear, golf, coolers, chairs, umbrellas, etc anything you need... They have it. They upgraded the bikes and we really enjoyed taking them on a ride to the property farm (yes, they have a farm). Dave really did a good job with the new bikes. They are more comfortable and not simple beach cruisers. Some have shocks and they all have gears. Hualani's is the restaurant on property and they are a true farm to table, sea to table establishment. We have had many meals at Hualani's and none have ever disappointed. From lunches and special dinners to the 4th of July celebration buffet in 2019. It's all been amazing. I wrote a separate review for the restaurant. Dave the bartender is the man! Best part of Timbers amongst all the above list of highlights? The people. Randy with valet services goes above and beyond. He has shown us true aloha and caring. We are so grateful for him. We look forward to seeing him each time we get back to the island. Mele at the front desk is amazing. She takes care of us and looks out for our entire group (there's a lot of us) every time my best friend and her family are back at Timbers. We really cannot thank Mele and Randy enough. They are both so amazing. Cant wait to be back again soon. Counting the days. So many memories made and plenty more to come. Mahalos Timbers. A hui hou.

Yelp
I booked suite 3102 from Nov. 2nd to Nov. 10th at Timbers, Kauai resort My credit card was charged twice and we paid in advance for $19,784.55, the last payment was on Oct. 12, 2023. From that time until I arrived I unsuccessfully requested in invoice with a breakdown of the charges. All I was able to receive was a receipt for the two payments. When I arrived, I request again, and although I was promised it would be emailed to me, it never was. I should have realized the upcoming problems when we requested early check-in advance, arrived at 12:30 and waited Till 4pm. I was told it takes 3 housekeeper three hours to prepare the room. I spoke with housekeeping the next day and its an about an hour. The suite is spacious and the views are beautiful and local management and this suite is a disaster. Let me provide me details: Many of the Sliding doors don't work (can't lock or open) Silding Blinds in the living room and bedrooms need to be repaired Primary Bedroom Balcony upholstery on chaise is rotting (almost blew away during rain and storms and ripped) Dining room Balcony - upholstery and chaise completely missing (except the ties that were left) All box springs on the beds squeak loudly (Can't sleep - wake up if you turn over) No Hair Dryer and missing standard bathroom items. The daily breakfast promised wasn't a hot meal, its rolls, coffee and fruit Housekeeping doesn't come unless you request everyday. Housekeeping is totally unknowledgeable on the way to work the TV. I'm working on my reviews for trip advisor and Yelp and will provide more details that you'll see. Sincerely, Barry S

Yelp
This a beautiful property and full disclosure, we were not staying here. We did come to view the models. I can tell you that the only staff members to acknowledge us were the Valet and Hostess at the restaurant. Everyone else just looked at us without saying a word...and no, they did not have other guest in front of them. Maybe they could tell we weren't guests but I may have been a buyer of one of the $5 million units. This has happened twice, in 2019 and again in May of 2022. The management may want to adapt the policy of Hyatt & Marriott to acknowledge a guest within 6 feet of their view. Also the person working the Sales Office was standoffish. Didn't seem to care if we were interested in looking or buying. Again, a beautiful property and I hear the restaurant is very good.

Yelp
We played on the course that has a couple of holes meander through the bar pool area of this resort. It's very exclusive, but the restaurant and bar are open to anyone, and many locals wind done here on Afro day evening during happy hour. The views from the bar are killer, the service impeccable. Adventurous folks can wait here but after dusk there aren't a ton of lights to find your way back.
google avatar

Frankie S.

Yelp
You can tell this resort is 5 stars all around, and we only had lunch there! Unreal views, amazing menu and cocktails and the staff is incredibly kind and welcoming. We were not staying there but plan to the next time we visit Kauai! Aaron is the food and bev manager and he'll do anything to make your visit perfect. If you're in the area and are a golfer, definitely do 18 at The Ocean Course right off the Timbers resort. Unbeatable views!! Ask for Ricky!!!
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
You have a date tonight? I've got a suggestion, TIMBERS!! Kauai's gem that few know about. Super bar with fresh mixology juices mixed into the best liquor. What a nice way to take a drink to the next level. 5stars. Timber's is a boutique hotel and residence. Excellence in all ways. Every single detail has been covered. You cannot go wrong staying or just visiting for a nice meal. Make a reservation, seating is limited. Not because everyone knows about them, more to the fact, farm to table has limited capacity. And if you are the type to care about ingredients, eat here everyday. The taste is absolute, clean and a cut above. There are always two fish dishes, grass fed local beef and a farm tucked between the world class golf course for the rest. Come check for yourself. You'll see me at the bar eating because I like the ocean view and maybe I'm the type to enjoy a bit more casual approach to things. Bring the family. There is something for everyone.
google avatar

Judy D.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! Nestled on the cliffs in Lahui next to the airport is this amazing upscale restaurant perched on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. They serve farm to table and the food is amazing!
google avatar

Jennnnnn J.

Yelp
Wow! This place is about as fancy as you can get for Kauai while still being laid back. It sits upon a sprawling timeshare complex and if I was wealthy I'd for sure stay there. We actually happened upon this on our way to the airport and wandered in no reservations and airport clothing in full effect. The food was amazing and priced accordingly so if you're looking for cheap food this ain't the place. It's actually priced well for the quality you get and our waitress was super knowledgeable and accommodating. We'll be back!
google avatar

Eric I.

Yelp
For a truly special occasion check out Timbers. The grounds are amazing with spectacular views. The service is exceptional and the meals are beyond exceptional. We especially enjoyed the bar area with it's relaxing vibe and amazing scenery. Pro tip, if you keep an eye out towards the ocean on occasion you might spot a whale passing by. All in all, Timbers is an absolutely amazing place which highlights all of the good that Kauai has to offer.
google avatar

Todd H.

Yelp
The 'best of the best' in Lihue. Full disclosure, I was just lucky enough to have dinner and drinks here, but WOW! There is no better view and accommodations than Timers Kauai. Stunning location, stunning pools and stunning food and service. Happy hour is a popular place here, but don't worry about crowds... the place may be casual, but this is the well heeled set. Perched high on a hill-top but beach accessible, you have jaw dropping views of the beach, lighthouse and even planes landing... it's such a gorgeous property. It's pricey to stay here, but I would rather stay a few days, than anywhere else... yes, I'm gushing...and after you come here you will be too! Enjoy!
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
Dreamy views plus delicious seared ahi. This was a special find in Yelp last week. I typically wouldn't have stopped at a spot with so few reviews, but Timbers is fairly new. It's an exclusive and hidden spot on Lihue/Kauai and so worth a visit! I stopped in to satisfy a craving for ahi and they delivered. Although my salad was drenched in a salty/mayo style Caesar dressing, my sweet bartender provided extra kale to soak it up. The ahi was absolutely perfect! The views and the property are spectacular. The resort itself is apparently privately owned residences that can be rented out. My bartender was particularly helpful explaining the dining options. Parking for non-guests is offered for free by a quick and friendly valet staff. It's an exclusive spot and food is priced accordingly. $$$.
google avatar

Katy W.

Yelp
This place was beautiful!! The restaurant on property had such good food we had to eat here more than once! Also the pizza night was delicious. The pool is beautiful, just super windy up there. You can sometimes see blow holes from whales out in the ocean. I would definitely recommend this place, it is a lovely property and the staff helps with all your needs. You can rent bikes, beach chairs, and small boards for the ocean!
google avatar

Yelp
Experience Kauai's Newest Gem! "A cocktail on your oceanfront lanai. A private surf lesson from a local. A morning hike to a secret waterfall. The oldest of the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai has always been paradise. But now you can explore the mystique of The Garden Isle in style at the island's newest luxury resort, Timbers Kauai." -Hawaii Magazine "Timbers Kauai is part of the 450-acre Hokuala resort community. And with Jack Nicklaus Signature golf, Running Waters beach, winding trails, freshwater lagoons and more, this is a very nice place to be." You can book your next hotel stay or consider the Residence Club (owning homes or townhomes) on the property. Visit their website for more information: www.timberskauai.com --- Near the airport, on the way to Lihue. Beautiful location. Overlooks the pier because its on a cliff. Lots of amenities for both visitors and homeowners. Its in the middle of the island so you can travel in either directions to popular tourist attractions. Also close to the 'city' part of Kauai, close to Walmart, Safeway, restaurants, etc. Would recommend this place if youre mixing up your hotel stays! Kauai is beautiful either way!

Maggie R.

Yelp
my family and i always love coming to Timbers. the view is fantastic and the food and drinks are excellent!

Yelp
Wow! Dinned here several times and this place never dissapoint Great food, great service, awesome ambiance. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Yelp
Location location location. Pristine cloth napkin umbrella shaded outdoor dining experience! Friendly staff, food was unimpressive but farm to table organic. Need to up the game for GF vegan and vegetarian options and add avocados, customer choice on wellness level seared or well done to the catch of the day and fish tacos. When in Hawaii I'm quickly learning to order the Hawaiian dishes. Goto Mexico for tacos, mole, burritos quesadillas, chilaquilies. Do poje bowls, green papaya salad, spam, rice n eggs or Kailua pork on these beautiful islands. CHEF Zach Cummings was so approachableand helpful. Made us a lovely fruit salad for GF vegan dessert!! using local soursop, pink guava and tart apple bananas . Yum! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Lynn A.

Yelp
Wonderful setting, ocean with lighthouse on the point as backdrop for delicious food and lovely service. Went on Tuesday night for special farm to table dinner. Very lovely visual presentation, good texture blends and most importantly delicious tastes. Enough to fulfill without over doing it. Only downside was the sudden heavy rain burst that put us inside rather than our starting point of unobstructed ocean view.
google avatar

Yelp
We eat at Timber's for every special occasion. While every time Is exceptional, last night blew us away. The Duck was one of the best meals I've ever had! It was planned out and cooked perfectly. The service is always fantastic! I'm hoping that duck is a menu regular!

Yelp
We have 15 of us all on vacation (in laws, our kids and their partners, grandkids etc) so we needed a big place for us to stay. We were able to rent a spacious full furnished house on the Timbers property, and let me tell you, this place is amazing. It is a very upscale resort and most people we met here are actually vacation home owners of the other multi million dollar homes! The clientele is very high class here and so the service had a very high standard as well- which was met! The staff here was terrific for our entire stay and gave us a lot of great advice of places to visit and places to eat! The restaurant at the resort, hualani's is great as well and has a beautiful view. There is an infinity pool that is nice but quite small but very private. We didn't feel like we were at those huge resorts where we were one of a million guests. The staff really went above and beyond and would remember us by face and name. We really had a great time and can't say enough great things. I'm very glad my husband booked this amazing vacation rental house. Now I'll be trying to convince him to buy us a vacation home here! Can't say enough good things :)
google avatar

Kathi L.

Yelp
So gorgeous! Amazing views. Great food and drinks. Lilikoi margarita is a must have. Super nice staff. The infinity pool is beautiful. Take their farm tour and walk in the red dirt to pick your food for dinner. And ... definitely get out on the ocean gold course. So good!
google avatar

Oliver B.

Yelp
The most high end hotel/resort/residential spot in Kauai island !! A must see view to the ocean and airplanes that land and departure ! Grab a drink by the infinity pool with yummy pupus next to it !

Kyle And Ry F.

Yelp
Came here to visit family and we got to stay 2 days at Timber's and it was amazing. The place is beautiful, the food is amazing, and the staff is wonderful, but especially Micha! He made every moment we were at the pool so fun and funny. He was extremely attentive and he must be a comedian or something because he had my entire family (12 of us) in stitches the entire time. I kept walking to the bar to get my drinks and he kept shooing me back to my family so he could take my order. We all loved him so much that when we came back home my grandma had a dream he came back to California with us (LOL). Everything about Timbers was amazing and anyone would have a lovey time there but that Micha needs a raise or a promotion or something! 10/10 would recommend 10/10 would come back

Erin H.

Yelp
Simply the best. We have stayed at various resorts on our favorite island but this is the best hands down. The accommodations are the nicest we've ever stayed at (anywhere) and the staff is so friendly & helpful. There is an infinity pool as well as a lava pool (family pool). Both are very nice. There are plenty of activities at the resort but guests also have access to the next door resort pools/beaches for a more crowded experience. We enjoyed the breakfast and happy hour at the restaurant on site and the on property farm provided some fresh/organic produce for when we wanted to eat in our unit. Trying to figure out when we can go again.

Susie S.

Yelp
We stayed in a 3 bedroom residence at this lovely resort. The building was lovely with the hallways lined with orchids and the unit was well appointed with a well stocked kitchen. The bathrooms were large and spacious with double sinks and built in closets. There were 3 balconies. Tidying up services are offered daily. I understand that another building in the complex which offers 3 and 4 bedroom units is even nicer. The pool was quite tranquil and sometimes felt that we had our own private pool even though we were told they were busy but not full. The landscaping is beautiful.  There are some activities offered...yoga, making s'mores, bikes with a child carrier, kayaks. We had a baby in our group and they supplied a crib and even a diaper genie. We would recommend this resort for a relaxing beach vacation though it is really pool vacation (beach access is limited) With gorgeous ocean views.

Luke M.

Yelp
Brand new resort. Most are private residences but you can stay here as a guest as well. It was never crowded. Very nice accommodations. Full bathrooms in every bedroom. Full kitchen with everything you could possibly need. The kids playroom downstairs is really nice! Don't pack any toys! Take some up for a few days then rotate. We will be back next time they do a Facebook promotion! Happy hour food was pretty good. The wine was too warm for me. But decent selection. Breakfast is included every day 2 per bedroom. (So our 3 bedroom room allowed for 6 free breakfasts). Note: very close to airport so you get planes and helicopters flying over often during the day. Also construction going on nearby with their next phase. Neither bothered us at all. We couldn't hear those things from inside the room. Only at pool.

Yelp
Loved our visit. Beautiful accommodations. Friendly staff. Quiet and relaxing. The only bad part: Others are learning about. :)

Yelp
I went to this location twice with my wife and 1 year old son for dinner on our one week vacation. Great food, outstanding service, and beautiful views of the beach. It's expensive but worth the price. We stayed at the Marriott and walked over. I would go back next time we're on the island.

Yelp
Went for lunch and the whole experience was awesome! From the ocean views with the infinity pools, the atmosphere was great and clean! Our server Kaylee was on point! Very knowledgeable, prompt, and courteous! The bartender was also great! Food was also delicious!
