20 Best East Bay Vegan Restaurants | Eater SF

"Vegan students and worker bees descend upon Timeless Coffee for its dairy-free cheesecakes, danishes, and custom cakes paired with small-batch coffee deftly poured into oat milk lattes. Its proximity to other cafes means that, while often busy, it’s not packed or flooded with people all jockeying for the one outlet that still works. The cafe also has a cozy location at 2965 College Avenue in Berkeley." - Eater Staff

We knew we had to order Timeless cakes for our vegan wedding in July 2025 because Timeless is our favorite cafe and bakery! They made us a two tier vanilla cake with vanilla frosting with a house-made raspberry jam filling (see picture below). Emailing with Diana to customize our order was easy and she was very responsive. We sent her inspiration photos and our floral color pallet and they procured the flowers to decorate the cake. Cake pick up on the day of the wedding was very easy as well. Their staff helped load the cake in the car and our venue was only a few minutes away so transportation was easy. When we first saw the cake before our cake cutting we were blown away with how beautiful it was and how it matched our exact idea of what we envisioned. The cake was delicious! Beyond this cake we also ordered two other half sheet cakes- a lemon cake with lemon frosting and a vanilla cake with pink strawberry frosting and fresh strawberry filling, which were also amazing! We were told by multiple guests that it was the best wedding cake they had ever eaten and were also blown away that it was vegan! I can’t recommend Timeless enough to make a decorative cake for any special day or celebration.

I’ve tried a few other coffee shops nearby but always end up coming back here. For black coffee drinkers: they good blends! Their pastries are quite tasty and most importantly fresh! I love the blueberry glazed donut. 🍩

Felix Chow

Google
The best vegan pastries I've had. You wouldn't be able to tell they are vegan. The apple danish was delicious. The coffee is solid for specialty coffee; they roast their own beans at their Piedmont Avenue location

Google
Great coffee. I had an Americano, which is my usual at any coffee shop, frankly it’s the best way to have a coffee and know that there’s nothing for it to hide behind. Timeless, coffee, nails it for sure. My wife had a Cortado which she also thought was delicious. Very nice staff as well.

Google
Nifty coffee shop. Lots of vegan baked goods.

Google
Nice atmosphere, clean accommodations. The apple walnut tea cake and the birthday cake were both very good and moist, but the lack of honey, butter, and jam was slightly disappointing.

I found out about this spot because some independent baker in SF sent all of their followers to cyber bully this business’s Instagram page. Before that I had no clue there was an all-vegan bakery & coffee shop in Oakland; had to come check it out! Been here a couple times, the workers are nice & welcoming, the spot is pretty chill, nice location. I really enjoyed the drip coffee! Definitely some of the best I’ve had in this area, however this spot is more expensive than the others. It’s located inside of a new pop-up gentri-apartment (like literally built last year 😒) so maybe the rent there is high? I tend to dislike plant-based businesses that charge a lot, just seems kind of unfair on a socioeconomic level but hey, it’s 2022 Oakland, what do you expect… My favorite item here is the butter croissant, taste amazing & the texture is spot on! Only lame thing is it sells out before 10am so you have to be an early bird vegan to enjoy it; I’ve only had the honor of trying it once. Wish they made more of this product or had it readily available for vegans that wake up past 9am, we do exist. Also tried the key lime pie; phenomenal! 🔥 Will make this a 5 star review if I can get a croissant at 11am. EDIT: 5 stars! Turns out the croissant availability there is random.

Google
I've had bad experiences with the customer service at other Timeless locations, but the pastries are delicious so I keep punishing myself by going back. I'm not sure why greeting a customer isn't part of the employee training manual - a simple "hi, welcome" could go a long way. The employee that helped me didn't speak until asking "anything else" after I placed my order for the pastry. It's just ridiculous to be treated like an inconvenience when I am the one purchasing something. I'm not saying the employees have to smile but the attitude is so cold and awkward. For me, the delicious pastries no longer outweigh the lack of customer service. This wasn't an "incident" but just another nail in the coffin for me of giving this place my business.

Yelp
I had the pineapple upside down cake today and loved it. It hit the nostalgic spot from my childhood. It was well done. The whipped cream in the center and maybe the last 25% of it was where I started losing enjoyment so would be a great dessert to share with someone else since it's a lot of sweetness for just one. I also tried the iced strawberry matcha latte today and it's a nice change of pace but sadly both the regular matcha latte, hot or cold, and this don't make my list of top places to get matcha in Oakland or the Bay Area. If I'm coming to Timeless, I'm coming for the pastries, baked goods, and food, over the drinks personally. Regardless, Timeless continues to be one of my most favorite spots given its wonderful collection of vegan offerings and I will continue to recommend.

Yelp
I got an espresso and an oat milk macchiato. The espresso was a dark roast, which I really appreciated because most shops that roast in the area do light to medium roast. The result was a full bodied, creamy and layers shot with light acidity balanced with and mild sweetness / notes of fruit. 4/5 Oat milk complemented the espresso well in the macchiato. Added texture without overpowering the flavor. 4/5.

Yelp
My favorite place for vegan sweets in all of Bay Area. I've been allergic to dairy my entire life and the cake slices here are just unreal (best vegan cakes I've ever tasted). My non vegan friends also really love the desserts! Out of pastries, really love the almond croissant! Have also tried: strawberry cheesecake, tiramisu cake, vanilla latte
google avatar

Loella D.

Yelp
My go tos are the matcha latte, apple and cherry pastries, and the hot tea selection. Staff is always kind and sweet! I swear they only hire cool people, lol. It's a great place to journal and catch up with myself and on some work. Although I wish there were more plugs! Vibes are great regardless. Not vegan anymore but loveeee not having to worry about dairy for my tummy's sake
google avatar

Aileen Z.

Yelp
Pastries are usually pretty tasty here. The drinks are hit or miss but usually good. Cherry cheesecake 7/10 (crust was not good) Snickerdoodle 10/10 (super soft) Americano 6/10 (burnt) Hot cocoa 9/10 (not too sweet)

Yelp
Dope coffee shop in downtown Oakland. Baked goods are delicious and the ice cold brew is good and strong. Tried the donuts and can't go wrong with any of them but the pumpkin donut is "festivally delicious" as someone would say lol. I just drink cold brews and this spot has a good strong cold brew. The way I like it, not watered down or anything. Overall can't go wrong here. Good food and coffee, friendly staff, and a dope ambience. Parking is kinda tough but not too bad.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee and delicious food. Employees are always sweet. I wished they would wipe down tables regularly- after all, the coffee is over $5, but other than that, I love this place
google avatar

Sophia L.

Yelp
Great place for some sweet or savory vegan pastries. They have a variety of cakes, scones, donuts, and pies. I'm a big fan of the donuts.

Yelp
My husband (coffee snob) loves this place. We have been to both locations and came here so I could work on my novel while he takes photos nearby but as a not coffee drinker my $7 matcha was a flop. The seats are uncomfortable, though the space is nice. There is also no WiFi. Luckily I don't *need* WiFi to work but I just wish places shared candidly when they don't have WiFi bc I feel many people do come to cafes to work. It's vegan so the milk options are oat, almond, and soy. I wanted to taste the matcha so I got soy but it does taste watery and wasn't sweet to my personal liking. Again my husband loves this place so it's a 4 bc of him but for me the matcha is a 3 if not 2 star drink.

Yelp
I saw that they are offering a limited time drink, the pistachio cream latte, so decided to give it a try. It was $7 before tip, which I feel is very expensive relative to the quantity. The drink wa ready within a few minutes. It tastes more sweet like pistachio ice cream or gelato flavor, not so much like raw pistachios. I did like it, and thought it was nice that it didn't just taste like coffee (i.e. they actually did flavor it well). The only reason I am taking off a star is because I still find it too pricey relative to quantity. There's some indoor seating in the shop and some people were working there on their laptops, as I had come in on Tuesday around lunch hour. They do sell pastries as well.

Yelp
My wife loves Timeless. I appreciate how they have multiple locations now but note that this location may not have what you're looking for. Been here multiple times and they never have Twinkies. So those are hit and miss ! First time trying the Samoa donut, and it does not taste like a donut whatsoever! Tasted like a chocolate cake with coconut flakes and chocolate drizzled on top. The texture also crumbles like a cake so you can't hold it like a donut to eat. Birthday cake - really good and moist Tiramisu - love tiramisu and love cake but timeless just didn't get this one right. It doesn't make you want to go for another bite. My wife looks forward to trying something different each time we're in town.

Yelp
Located in downtown Oakland close to Harrison is this coffee shop/cafe. It's pretty large on the inside; they have your regular cafe menu as well as tons of treats and desserts that looked so good! We parked in the apartment complex across the street but there is street parking. Lots of places to sit, study, or work. My friend got their golden milk latte which had turmeric in it. It sounded a little different and my friend thought it was ok. They also had a lot of plant based options and with their desserts and drinks!
google avatar

Penny A.

Yelp
Pistachio cream latte is great but overall drinks here are overpriced. And they also DONT have WiFi!!
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee, friendly service, quiet enough to hang out and talk or work. They also have some pastries and other food that looks great. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
Nice ambience. Leisurely feel on a holiday. Variety of vegan desserts and drinks. We came here based on a friend's recco. Not disappointed with the selection. This is certainly a better alternative to s'bucks. Drink prices are reasonable. The reception at the counter was a bit cold though. The menu more than compensated for that, I am not complaining Thanks to the team at this facility for the thoughtful selection.

Yelp
Straightforward coffee shop. Only one person working (felt so bad!) so was pretty in and out. Great to run in and grab a matcha latte

Katiana G.

Yelp
I really love timeless and have been a customer for several years now. Unfortunately after they opened multiple locations I have definitely noticed a dip in the quality- which is a common occurrence in situations like these. I wish they would have at least stuck with their old grab-and-go sandwiches, because these new ones are such a downgrade!!! This new "hoagie bread" is so so bad, it lacks flavor and texture, and the sandwiches are always sooo soggy now. No one wants to spend 14 on extremely wet bread :/ That being said I still love this place, but wish they went back to their old sandwiches on the baguettes
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
I love timeless they have the best pastries and everything is plant based! The service is great and I love that they have special lattes throughout the seasons

Yelp
I was excited when Timeless Coffee opened it's second location next to Senior Sisig and quickly became an established "third place" in Downtown. It felt like a great spot to grab a coffee, and munch down on some *excellent* vegan pastries (*drool* faux-Twix bars *drool*). That said, about a year ago, I witnessed a concerning incident while in line. An unhoused individual entered, wielding a metal stick, and it was clear the staff knew him. They immediately said something like, "Sorry, don't have any extra today." Welp, bad choice of words. He became increasingly agitated, mumbling incoherently , relentlessly tapping on the pastry case and swinging the stick. Everyone froze, expecting the staff to step in, but they... did nothing. Instead, the individual walked away with a "donation." If your establishments wants to feed, or support the unhoused that's great. But maybe, just maybe, you should establish some protocols around this. I haven't returned since, and I live just a few blocks down the street.

Yelp
A little pricey but solid plant-based coffee shop. I ordered a decaf pumpkin spiced latte (because it's that time of year - so why not) and it was one of the best I've had. Subtly sweet (not like the 42g of sugar in the Starbucks' PSL...) and did not notice the lack of dairy milk. Fun vibe, friendly staff and lots of seating to hang out and enjoy your coffee. Good selection of vegan pastries though, albeit expensive.
google avatar

Notorious M.

Yelp
Dairy free. I love dairy so I probably won't be back. Easy to spot. Located at a corner. Friendly service. Pricey. $14 for a sandwich that's been sitting on the shelf for who knows how long. $7 for matcha latte.
google avatar

Jose Manuel C.

Yelp
The coffee here is wonderful. All products are 100 % plant based, I liked the breakfast Sandwich, for a vegan sandwich that was good! The bagels are cool, they have huge twinkies which I eyed but since I liked the place I might try em next time I go. Wonderful place and staff !!!!
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Pastries are awesome... reviews were right saying baristas are rude.. I don't appreciate the drinks much either.. better to door dash don't waste your time going in.
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
I stopped into timeless for a coffee with my girlfriend. I asked for a latte with whole milk. Oops! It's a vegan cafe. The barista gave me an odd look as said "this is a vegan cafe". My bad! I don't care for nut or oat beverages so I asked for a black pour over. It was tasty. The golden latte that my gf got was also great, I stole a sip. Enjoy, but don't ask for regular milk!
google avatar

Denzel T.

Yelp
I've been coming to timeless for years. I recently needed to satisfy my sweet tooth, so I stopped by and grabbed a slice of tiramisu. The cake was most and flavorful . I'm dairy free, so it's nice having timeless as an option for vegan baked goods from time to time. They're on the pricier side, but I'd generally say it's worth it. The staff were also super friendly! I'd definitely recommend Timeless if you want a nice treat, or a chill space to work in.
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
First time coming here after always passing by it to go to work and I was surprised that it was a vegan shop! Not a problem since I like alternative milk, so it worked out. The person that helped me was very helpful in trying to help me order for someone who doesn't like alternative milk and they ended up loving the drink! Very clean space, and fast service - will be coming back!
google avatar

Veda H.

Yelp
I've always loved Timeless, first at the Piedmont location, then the Elmwood one (which sadly shut down), and now the one near my office in downtown Oakland. Normally the staff has been super chill and friendly and queer-positive (I'm trans) at all locations. But today, the two staff members were really unconscionably rude to me in a way I've never seen at a Timeless location before (or really any place in Oakland. It was astonishing.) Not sure I'm ever going back. Such a shame, because I've liked them up to this point.
google avatar

joujou d.

Yelp
It wasn't a great experience at timeless! I order two coffee and one pastry, the cashier ask me if I want the pastry heated up and I said if the pastry from today no need but if from yesterday yes! (I wasn't trying to be rude) So she heat up my pastry and gave it to me! Than she went to the espresso area where the barista was preparing my drink and grabbed the espresso shot and just dumped milk on top! No leaf or heart zero love was spent on my drink :( So $6.50 for an espresso topped with milk wasn't worth it! And I'm glad I left tip otherwise I don't know what I was gonna get!

Michael T.

Yelp
I tried a good amount of the coffees they have available to order and I would say they do not disappoint. The baristas were also great. Would recommend for sure
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
My go-to location for Timeless is the collage ave one bc of the crew working and the vibe...but this morning I went to the new-new in jack london and loved it! I had a tasty blueberry scone (not too big, not too small) which was super fresh and deelish, accompanied by a *long black "long shot of espresso or lungo in Italian" for those reading who don't know coffee... Timeless is bomb. I got to try the matcha next time... my favorite is the chocolate or maple Donut though, you can't go wrong! What you need To do: 1. Go to jack london Sq. 2. Order coffee and a pastry @Timeless 3. Take a nice walk along the waterfront, sipping timeless coffee with a Yummy pastry! (that's vegan and the entire facility is dairy free btw). You'll be happy!
google avatar

Bryan O.

Yelp
Good coffee. They sell beans, if you want to pay an enormous markup ($23-25 for a bag you could pay $16 for elsewhere). If you can't eat wheat, there's almost nothing here for you.
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Timeless Coffee is a welcomed addition to the offerings in Jack London Square. They replaced the French bakery Miette but offers much of the charm and appeal that the predecessors had in their own vibe. My taste buds highly value their espresso and drink menu. As others have mentioned, it may be the best coffee around the area. I also enjoy that they do not have added sugar in their Matcha mix, which is the traditional way to enjoy the Matcha lattes. Adjust sweetness to your liking with the little counter with sugar tubes. They also have a large selection of different pastries and treats. My favorite would have to be the savory pastries that they offer. With such a large selection, I need to return back to try the rest of their items. When it comes to sweets, I have tried their Black Magic Cake. It was strangely not moist but not exactly dry. The chocolate had a bit more cocoa than I preferred but wasn't rich. Not entire the biggest fan of it. I do, however; appreciate that they have slices of all their cake options, so you can sample before committing to an entire cake (like for an event). The people are friendly but don't up-play their enthusiasm to boost customer service. (they are also now open until 3pm, which is great to combat the afternoon slump).
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Timeless is defined as something that's relevant through the tests of time.. so this begs the question, is Timeless Coffee truly timeless? The irony is only time will tell. Coffee shop is hip, service is quick and the coffee is yummy certified!
google avatar

Philip H.

Yelp
no wifi, no electricity outlet, no diary, pay street parking my coffee is alright, the place is clean but definitely not a good place to work or study. gg
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
delicious coffee but ridiculously overpriced for the size. This was $7 plus tip. I was saddened that more than 50% of this small cup was just ice - not sure if i'd come back here but it was nice giving it a try!
google avatar

Wen K.

Yelp
That was I mistake going to this place I asked to the barista to do only one shot of espresso on my coffee before he starting making it and he rejected, he said no I can't the latte comes with two you need to order another latte and specify what to the cashier so I can make it whit only one shot, They made me pay for two cups of coffee after I gave him one to trow it away because I only wanted one that was the expensive $11 dollars cup of coffee that I should never bought
google avatar

Amy Z.

Yelp
Pretty nice coffee shop to chill at, I heard they are vegan, more on the pricy side, but kinda worth it for the environment I like how their matcha doesn't have added sugar in it, which the ones at Starbucks usually do. Soy milk in matcha is pretty good The everything bagel and chive spread is standard
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
This coffee shop is the best in so many ways. The Oakland location is only a 5 min walk from Lake Merritt, perfect pit stop before a walk around the lake. Their products are not only 100% plant-based but super delicious. They have created something so original and a must try spot. Only reason I give them 4 stars is because I wish they had a large cup lol because sometimes I just need that extra caffeine.

William N.

Yelp
I been here a few times and I noticed that they are quite rude to a particular group of people without any reason. Wouldn't recommend and doesn't belong in Oakland.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Good ambience and latte! Came here on a Thursday morning to work and I got a latte with oat milk. The staff are friendly and the service is fast. As of now, this place still requires vaccination proof for dine-in. The latte is smooth and creamy with the oat milk and the coffee has a nutty note to it. The place is clean and spacious with plenty of tables and chairs. It's also well lit so perfect to work or chat with friends. I really like the pastry case this place has upon walking into the coffee shop. This place has a variety of food selections from savory to sweet. I will come back to try them next time! Note: wifi is not available here
google avatar

Amber A.

Yelp
A favorite to add to my running list of go-to coffee shops. Lots of natural lighting, great atmosphere, and overall good vibes with good coffee. They have a vast selection of pastries for breakfast and for a quick snack, which I have yet to try. I also can't wait to try more of the other drinks on their menu! My favorites are their iced timeless (vanilla cold brew) and matcha latte. Both really hit the spot to start my morning or for an afternoon pick-me-up if I need the extra energy. I also like how they aren't too sweet but still have the right amount of sweetness so it isn't too bitter or watered down. No wifi or outlets around unfortunately, but this won't stop me from bringing my laptop around to get some work done.
google avatar

Mindy X.

Yelp
A nice spot, I'd come back with a friend, or bring a laptop to do some work. Seating - tons of seating on a Monday morning. And large tables. Size does matter. Would make a good study/work spot. Ambience - COLD. Although this is subjective I suppose. Not sure why they had their AC on but I was shivering sipping my cold brew...had the effect of an ice bath. It woke me up but felt unpleasant. The actual ambience was relaxing like most modern-ish Oakland cafés. The wood brightened the whole space up. Coffee - delish. I got a vanilla cold brew. It was pre-sweetened. I'll ask for the sweetness to be lowered next time.
google avatar

Braden ..

Yelp
Clean, modern aesthetic layout with multiple areas for seating/work. Rate coffee high with the breakfast sandwich being a slightly elevated McMuffin. Friendly and proactive staff.
google avatar

Kedar D.

Yelp
Timeless is a staple of the vegan scene in Oakland and Berkeley. I like its reliability and variety of options. The breakfast sandwich ($8) was fine, but not memorable. The English muffin was weirdly starchy, and the other ingredients (Just Egg, Follow Your Heart cheese, Beyond patty) are so boringly ubiquitous as to not warrant attention. You can get a much better rendition of this reheated frozen foods conglomeration at Peet's for $2 cheaper. The scones ($3.25) are excellent: not too dry, not too cookie-like. The butter croissant ($4.25) wasn't bad. I've had better vegan croissants elsewhere, but they're hard to find (including at Timeless, which only offers them on the weekends), so I won't complain too much. The ham and cheese croissant ($5.25) had better pastry texture, but I didn't like the Taiwanese ham, which tastes and smells too real (I wonder what artificial flavors they use to make it that way). Lastly, they do a good job with their cakes and cookies and pies and cheesecakes (though I think the Butcher's Son cheesecakes are better). Stop by Timeless for a respectable vegan dessert or savory treat.
google avatar

Aanchal G.

Yelp
I had been wanting to try this vegan cafe for a while and finally got a chance to visit on a Saturday morning. It definitely did not disappoint! My order: - breakfast sandwich: yum! It had vegan cheese, just egg and impossible sausage. I really liked the combo. - cherry Danish - good - cappuccino with oat milk: it was okay. I have had better oat milk cappuccinos. Overall, it's a great cafe for vegan goodies. I'll have to visit again to try out other items on their menu.
google avatar

Sami R.

Yelp
Not a bad place! Coffee was decent. Not the best but it was good. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because they don't have any signs stating their vegan. I'm cool with oat milk but I took my cow milk drinking boyfriend sooooo. Whoops.

Sarah T.

Yelp
I like their food but don't like going in as their staff is rude. Just ordered on uber eats instead, selected refund if an item isn't available. They didn't give me my refund. $8 for a croissant is already a lot. And to not get it or a refund? There are so few vegan options in Oakland, why can't the ones we have treat their customers decent?
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
This is a chill spot to sip on great coffee and a relaxed vibe. There's a few spots to journal, read, or handout. They have a few items to choose from, but it's a simple menu. They have a variety of sweet and savory patries. The baristas are friendly and amaziy at what they do! I love all the lighting the place gets. Their restrooma are also clean. Highly recommend this place!
