Yelp
One of the advantages of having a motorcycle that gets over 60mpg is that it the weather is good after a rainy morning and I want to try a new place I can check out Yelp and then take a ride; that is what I did on a Spring Monday afternoon and I ended up at Tim's Tavern in Canton. Tucked away in a residential neighborhood near Meyers Lake it can be easy to miss Tim's, but is is worth finding it. According to its website Tim's has been around in one form or another since 1957 and has been famous for fish.
Tim's is a bit nondescript from the outside with a large parking lot around it. Inside there is a dining room to the right and the large bar room to the left which is where they were serving when I was there. The bar area has a great kind of dive bar feel with old wood, tile floor, low ceiling and red stacking chairs; a casual atmosphere to be sure.
The menu is fish and seafood heavy along with burgers and chicken, with many different ways of enjoying each protein. I was just a bit late for the 3pm cutoff for lunch so I ended up ordering the beer battered fish dinner since that is what they are famous for. The dinner comes with 2 sides and hushpuppies.
After only a couple of minutes out came the basket of hushpuppies with whipped honey butter. These were some of the best hushpuppies I have had, freshly fried with a crispy exterior and a golden inside. These were not as dense as most hushpuppies I have had, the corn flavor comes through and there are kernels of corn that give a pop of sweetness. Combined with the honey butter I saved most of these as a great finish to the dinner.
Shortly after the fish dinner came out, two nice sized thick fillets of fish a huge pile of home fries and rice pilaf. The fish was excellent, fresh Cod with a perfect Beer Batter expertly fried; the fish was mild and flaky, the batter crispy and flavorful. This was some of the best fried fish I have had in North East Ohio. The home fries and rice pilaf were both what you would expect, well prepared and very generous portions.
Tim's Tavern really impressed me, a nice comfortable atmosphere, good service and both the fried fish and hushpuppies were some of the best I have had. I will definitely be back. If you are in the Canton area it is near both the NFL Hall of Fame and the McKinley Presidential Library, but well worth seeking out if you want some good eats.
