Seattle’s Legendary Diner Beth’s Cafe Is Open for Late-Night, Again | Eater Seattle

"At Tim’s Tavern I’ve seen an extensive vegan menu that’s informed by Mason Reed’s background as a caterer who served many pop stars, and that same vegan-forward influence is being carried into Beth’s with new vegetarian and vegan additions while preserving the classic menu." - Harry Cheadle

Tim’s Tavern in Seattle Closes Down at Its Longtime Location | Eater Seattle

"I've long known this Greenwood dive for its consistently strong live-music lineup; on August 23 it announced that Tim's Tavern would close at its current address, canceling upcoming concerts because of leasing issues and ongoing pandemic-related problems—bands cancelling due to COVID exposures and a recent staff infection made continuing shows untenable. The bar sits on a site that's been a tavern since the 1930s (originally Jack's Tavern); Tim Arnot bought it in 2011, created more stage space while maintaining the original character, and the place shifted from sports and trivia to a punk-friendly live-music hub thanks to promoter Greg Gibson before his death in a 2016 house fire. After Gibson's death, Mason Reed and promoter Matthew “Matto” O'Toole took over (purchasing the place from Arnot) and kept its artist-friendly mission—Reed notes that 100 percent of ticket sales go to the bands, with a basic offering of beer, cocktails, and light snacks to keep the lights on—and patrons often say they can just show up knowing they'll be blown away by a concert. The venue closed in March 2020, survived via a GoFundMe, a YouTube channel, and federal Save Our Stages relief, reopened July 2, and instituted proof-of-vaccination or a negative test and an early mask mandate; however, with the delta surge, a breakthrough staff case, and a lease expiring in November, the owners decided to shut the current location now, store the famed neon sign, and search for a new outdoor, safer, and more COVID-friendly space while keeping the Tim's Tavern name and pledging to continue supporting the musical community." - Gabe Guarente

I had a great time at Tim’s Tavern! If you’re looking for a spot with a welcoming atmosphere and consistently good food, this is it. The absolute standout was the fish—it was amazing, perfectly cooked, and definitely the highlight of the meal. Beyond that, everything we ordered was delicious; you can tell they take pride in what comes out of the kitchen. It’s also a fun place to hang out if you’re feeling lucky. They have pull tab machines and Lotto, which adds a great energy to the room while you enjoy your drinks and meal. Whether you’re there for the food or the games, Tim’s Tavern is a solid choice. I'll definitely be back!

First time visiting. Tenía, our waitress, was very polite and accommodating. My Seafood salad with sweet and sour dressing was very good. Hush Puppies were crispy, and the best part was the sweet potatoes fries with butter and brown sugar. My husband loved his fish. We ordered crab cakes as appetizer. They were good as well.

Zulema D.

Google
I had the broiled seafood platter. Delicious! The hush puppies were light and crispy with a sweet flavor. The fresh cut fries were cooked to perfection. Everything was so delicious. The clam chowder was amazing. Payton our waitress was cheerful, prompt, and wonderful! This was our first ever visit. We will be back!

Been trying to go here for a few years. Stopped in for lunch. Had the two pieces battered Cod, Hush Puppies with Honey Butter and Fries. Everything was great!

I have been wanting to try Tim’s ever since moving to Canton. I have heard their fish is great, and it was! Very good breading and white fish. I went on a Tuesday when their special was fish. I opted for the “jumbo” and got two 6 inch pieces of fish instead of one. Not exactly what I thought of when ordering “jumbo”. And I was disappointed that for a $13 lunch it didn’t come with fries or some kind of free side. Overall a good experience but too pricey for what they advertise for. Great service and tons of space. Good tartar sauce also.

Google
The fried cod is lightly battered and very tasty. It is served with a tremendous amount of fries. The shrimp and lobster shrimp soup was delicious without being too heavy. The fried green tomatoes were a little greasy but the hush puppies were right on.

Yelp
Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and even said she enjoyed the food at Tim's. She recommended what she had before, you don't find that as often at restaurants where employees eat the food. It was refreshing. The fish sandwich was absolutely delicious as were the hush puppies. It was busy for a Sunday afternoon but it didn't take long at all to get our food.

Yelp
Being a resident of South Carolina, my review may not be totally fair. We were party of six senior family members recently. In all cases, the soup, fish and hushpuppies were very good. The fries and cole slaw were just OK. My big issue is value. In the South we are served hushpuppies free with our meals. Tim's charges $10.00 per order. The dinner charges are quite a bit higher at Tim's than what I am used to. The value issue can be handled if you are over 65 and stop on a Wednesday night. Seniors get a 25% discount on Wednesdays. The service was excellent for our party of six. Based on my knowledge of what is available in Northeast Ohio, Tim's is a good choice and we will be back when in the area.

Yelp
The place has declined over the past few years. The prices have increased, and the potions have decreased. I even asked about the wing size before I ordered, and was told the wings were large. Not only have the prices increased, but the credit card fees are included in the price. A 3 piece fish dinner and 10 piece wings cost over 40.00 with tip. It will probably be my last visit unfortunately. The place hasn't even been upgraded.

Yelp
Great beer battered fish , hush puppies & coleslaw . Great atmosphere & service. Additional plus of Fantastic painted wall of the great memories of Meyer's Lake! Whoever painted this wall of Meyer's Lake is really gifted!

Yelp
food is way overpriced, greasy nasty for 10 pieces of fish two orders of mushrooms, small hush puppies $84 not including drinks are you kidding me? They'll never see another dime of my money. Learn how to deep fry ,get your cooking oil to the proper temperature one of the worst meals I've had in a long time
google avatar

Beau M.

Yelp
I was in there recently, and the manager was yelling at a young hostess sort of in her face into the best of my knowledge. I don't think the hostess did anything wrong. I'm not for sure but you don't treat employees like that in front of customers and they're rushing the fish out my center was cold.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years. The fish and shrimp have always been tasty and reasonably priced. Service has been excellent. Wednesday nights is Seniors' Night and prices are 25% off.. A large salad is included. The alternative is cole slaw or a vegetable. The hush puppies are warm and crunchy They are plentiful as well. There is one peculiarity- If you ask for hush puppies on a to go order, they charge for them and they are expensive. If you dine in, you can have as many as you want for free. The clam chowder is consistently good This is one of our favorite place for a quick tasty meal. With regard to ambiance, you might say there is none, but at these prices and good food, who cares?

Yelp
One of the advantages of having a motorcycle that gets over 60mpg is that it the weather is good after a rainy morning and I want to try a new place I can check out Yelp and then take a ride; that is what I did on a Spring Monday afternoon and I ended up at Tim's Tavern in Canton. Tucked away in a residential neighborhood near Meyers Lake it can be easy to miss Tim's, but is is worth finding it. According to its website Tim's has been around in one form or another since 1957 and has been famous for fish. Tim's is a bit nondescript from the outside with a large parking lot around it. Inside there is a dining room to the right and the large bar room to the left which is where they were serving when I was there. The bar area has a great kind of dive bar feel with old wood, tile floor, low ceiling and red stacking chairs; a casual atmosphere to be sure. The menu is fish and seafood heavy along with burgers and chicken, with many different ways of enjoying each protein. I was just a bit late for the 3pm cutoff for lunch so I ended up ordering the beer battered fish dinner since that is what they are famous for. The dinner comes with 2 sides and hushpuppies. After only a couple of minutes out came the basket of hushpuppies with whipped honey butter. These were some of the best hushpuppies I have had, freshly fried with a crispy exterior and a golden inside. These were not as dense as most hushpuppies I have had, the corn flavor comes through and there are kernels of corn that give a pop of sweetness. Combined with the honey butter I saved most of these as a great finish to the dinner. Shortly after the fish dinner came out, two nice sized thick fillets of fish a huge pile of home fries and rice pilaf. The fish was excellent, fresh Cod with a perfect Beer Batter expertly fried; the fish was mild and flaky, the batter crispy and flavorful. This was some of the best fried fish I have had in North East Ohio. The home fries and rice pilaf were both what you would expect, well prepared and very generous portions. Tim's Tavern really impressed me, a nice comfortable atmosphere, good service and both the fried fish and hushpuppies were some of the best I have had. I will definitely be back. If you are in the Canton area it is near both the NFL Hall of Fame and the McKinley Presidential Library, but well worth seeking out if you want some good eats.

Yelp
Great menu, all the classic dishes I remember from years ago, plus many new additions made the decision a difficult one! The waitress was so helpful in her suggestions, and very attentive through the whole meal. At our table we had great drinks, hush puppies, fried mushrooms, clam chowder, shrimp & lobster bisque, we also had fried and grilled seafood entrees. Everything was delicious, served hot and fresh. We will definitely be back!

Rich H.

Yelp
The service was amazing. Annie did a great job explaining the menu and was dead on with her recommendations. The food was great! We had people who were not fish people, and they loved it. Thanks for a great time!!!!!

kelle k.

Yelp
Great service and fun, neighborhood atmosphere. I've been there twice and didn't care for the fish dinner but my husband loved his burger. I'll give it another whirl and try something else on the menu next time.

Mary M.

Yelp
Hidden Gem! Great service and decent amount of liquor for the men in my life. Yummy food, best shrimp basket and chicken tenders. Several grilled options to choose from and salads too!

Cayrsten C.

Yelp
Cute little hidden gem in Perry township! Wish they had coconut shrimp or more unique fish dinner options but over all very good. Homemade crab cake's were delicious, and weekly specials are very reasonable. Will return and try something different!

Terry W.

Yelp
Arrived on our usual Saturday night dinner at Tim's tavern and was informed they Cut the hours of our favorite waitress, Alayna. They informed us that Alayna no longer works on Saturday night. Please restore Alayna's hours and schedule her for Saturday nights when you have your fish special. Thank you.

Diane W.

Yelp
Hushpuppies were burnt and fish overcooked and hard. But the worst part was the waitress. Dropped off our appetizers without plates. Waited 5 min before other waitress brought them. Never came to the table and asked if ok. Then we waited 15 min while she talked to people at another table. I finally caught her attention but she turned her back. Then my husband loudly set his drink down and she held up her finger like wait a minute. Again the other waitress stepped in to check us out. This was the first time I never left a tip for a server! I did tip the other girl that helped us. Shocked by the service as we've been going to Tims for decades.

Yelp
Hands down the best hush puppies ever! The fried cod has tasted the same for the 40 years I have been coming here, love it!!
google avatar

Tim B.

Yelp
We had gone to the nearby Pro Football Hall of Fame, which was well enough, but left us hungry. A quick Google search suggested Tim's Tavern would be appropriate, and with a name like that, it was certainly a good sign. Yes, this checks many of the boxes one would expect from a diner in Middle America. Lots of old people, probably not too surprising given that it was around noon on Monday. Lots of pictures celebrating the good ole days, and no exotic drinks on the menu. But that's not realistic to expect here. It did well enough against its benchmark - my burger kept me going for the rest of the day, and the beer I had kept me happy. At least for a few hours. Service was decent, and nobody was giving us California boys any dirty looks. A perfectly fine stop!
google avatar

Cathy W.

Yelp
I had never heard of Tim's but I'm so glad that the opportunity presented itself for us to check it out! We had the ranch fries to start and they were delicious. They're potato wedges covered in cheese and bacon bits and served with some of the most delicious ranch dressing that I've had in a while. I got a side salad and it was just ok. Nothing special but it was a decent size. I had the beer battered fish and got asparagus as my side. The fish was AMAZING and I'm not really a fish fan but I'm so glad I got it. The asparagus was slightly over-cooked and mushy, so I probably wouldn't order it again. Next time I'm getting the fish tacos and I'm going to try the lobster and shrimp bisque. Definitely a place to try again and the food is FRESH and doesn't taste frozen. They do have daily specials and that's an added bonus.

Yelp
On a recent visit to Canton our friends recommended this restaurant to us for lunch or dinner. It doesn't look like a traditional restaurant from the outside. It looks like they have expanded from the original bar. But it was a very large open space with tables and booths. Our lovely young server was very friendly and very attentive. We love the food and would recommend it to others. Next time we are in town we will visit here again.

Kelly C.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Canton. Great fish and hush puppies. The service is always great too.

Joe F.

Yelp
Restaurant was very crowded today but staff was very quick and we quickly got our food. Tim's is still the best fish around the Canton area!!

Harry K.

Yelp
I went against my own rule to 'Never order steak from a seafood restaurant'. Their menu : Tavern Pub Steak $17.99 8 oz. sirloin grilled to perfection. The steaks were dry , taseless and tough. We had to 'saw' the steak into tiny pieces to chew. The Hush puppies were very good, the Tavern fries were edible but only luke warm. My advice when visiting this restaurant : " NEVER ORDER STEAK FROM A SEAFOOD RESTAURANT ! "

Sally G.

Yelp
The food and service at Tim's was superior. We fortunately got there before the dinner, rush, and planning on going back again and again. The tables were clean as was the table ware. Beer Battered Fish yummm

Yelp
I really do enjoy this place. It is a must in the where do we wanna go when we visit family in Ohio. Small town bar ish feel and the servers are just as friendly as can be. Now this trip we had a de ent size group of about 10-12 or so. So some of the good items came out a little before others. It was hall of fame weekend and there was something going on in the closed off room. I got the 3 piece fried fish dinner. I couldn't eat it all. Very well cooked. Fried to perfection but still nice and flaky inside. They have nice cold beer and well I am not a fan of coleslaw but it seemed to be a hit. They have tiny hish puppies that have corn in them. Interesting. Ut still very good This isnt your fancy seafood dinner but this is your dang good food and just sit back and relax meal. I want to go back now
google avatar

Rena S.

Yelp
We come here frequently but last week was the first time we had come for a Friday during Lent. The place was slammed but we were able to get a seat at the bar around 7pm. The bar tender was super friendly and personable and checked in with us often. I ordered the 2 piece cod dinner with onion rings, salad and hush puppies and my husband ordered the lobster bisque soup and firecracker shrimp appetizer. Everything was very good, hot, and made to order. The onion rings lacked flavor and were overly greasy, so I didn't eat most of those but the fish were thick fillets of flaky fish and the hush puppies were phenomenal with butter. We felt like we got a good deal for the money and we left full. We will continue to frequent Tim's in the future.

Dale C.

Yelp
Very poor service and food quality has gone down in the years. As their prices continue to rise. Last two visits to this establishment has been disappointing. I would no longer recommend to friends and family. Nor will I return cannot believe there were two bad experiences back to back. Nevertheless if you feed two it's a quick $50 gone.
google avatar

Maria Victoria S.

Yelp
The food not quite good. My and my grand niece food did not settle good in our stomachs we were sick for a day. All of us adults noticed that the oil used was old. The only positive thing I can say: the service was excellent our wait staff was fast, accommodating and very respectful.
google avatar

J A.

Yelp
Love the fish! Grew up in Canton and always stop here! Staff is friendly and welcoming. Recommend the coke slaw and cottage cheese!

Coffee-Chat With C.

Yelp
the food was disgusting!!! wet fish, grease dripping off fries, hush puppies you squeeze grease out. fries cooked burnt. not sure if this was done on purpose because ..nevermind. i will never eat there again!! also shrimp po boy 6 box shrimp on top of lettuce and plain dry bun fried pickle were amazing though
google avatar

Russell P.

Yelp
Great place for fried fish! We enjoyed everything we ate and the food was well priced.

Nola L.

Yelp
Ordered a significantly expensive meal on Uber eats to be delivered to my house. An hour and three phone calls later my order gets cancelled. I call about my order and the guy is more interested in telling me how the prices on the app aren't their responsibility to update and my Uber eats order couldn't be picked up because the amount was different then what was supposed to be charged. I send my son to pick up a fresh order of food and they attempt to give him the two hour old cold fish! Come on! Wtf is wrong with you people? He ordered three fish plates and there were no fries. This place isn't worth the 100$ it cost to eat there! Plus just a friendly update an hour later and we are all fighting for the bathroom because we have stomach issues from the food.

Susan M.

Yelp
We recently revisited this classic restaurant. The food was delicious, down to the tarter sauce , and honey butter for hush puppies. Our waitress was very upbeat, and made sure we were well taken care of. We will definitely be returning. This is now one of our top five places to eat.

Carole S.

Yelp
I regret going here every few years. I got take out. The 3rd star is for the 15 minutes it took for readiness. But if they are that fast, are they busy on a Saturday night at 5:30pm. No! The grease stinks and gave me stomach pains almost instantly after eating. I got the 3 piece beer batter and home fries. It was supposed to come with hush puppies and or roll with my dinner plate but never got them. Fish was soggy. I got one little tarter sauce that covered a half of piece. Hubby got a fish sandwich and could not finish because He got sick! Nothing was seasoned at all! I am very disappointed and will never go back !

Debra G.

Yelp
Best hush puppies anywhere, sweet potato fries are a must try, crab cakes divine. I always have the fried perch dinner. I haven't tried the wall-eye because it's on special days, and we usually go on Wednesday. Atmosphere is layed back, not too fancy, but warm and inviting. Try it!
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
My salad came with the best blue cheese dressing I have ever had. Then the firecracker shrimp for an appetizer, outstanding. Then the Hush Puppies.... they took my breath away. One of the best things I have ever tasted. Then the fish dinner with onion rings. One of the prettiest fried plates you'll ever see. The fish was ok, just average. The onion rings were the biggest disappointment of the night. No taste, the onions may have been frozen and lost their taste. But truly sad way to end the dinner that had a great start. My wife's shrimp were like pre-breaded freezer variety that you could get at the store. But even after all this.... those hush puppy though hmmmmmmmmm

Robert R.

Yelp
Tuesday fish tacos were good but fish was cold. Prefer Cole slaw base instead of lettuce. Shrimp lobster bisque soup amazing. Onion rings large but soggy. Wish they were cooked little longer. Service was rough just because two waitresses and they were busy and computers went down
google avatar

HughMadBro Y.

Yelp
Very disappointing. I had heard of this place a few years back, when I was new to the area. Someone said they had the best fish in town. Wrong. The fish was undercooked and greasy. The clam chowder was thin and lacking flavor. I've had better chowder out of a can. The only redeeming thing was the cold beer
google avatar

Julie P.

Yelp
Went with a group of 7 people on a Thursday evening. We were seated immediately. Three of us ordered the lobster pasta Thursday special and we all said it was good. There are pieces of green, yellow, and red pepper in the sauce which gives the sauce a fairly heavy pepper flavor. I like bell peppers so it made the dish for me but if you are not a bell pepper fan this probably isn't the choice for you. I also ordered the bisque. I will say that the flavor of the "broth" could have been a bit creamier but in terms of actual meat in the soup I have never had any bisque that has come even close to the amount they put in. I would order the bisque again! Several people got the 2 piece fish and said it was outstanding. My son ate the kids chicken and French fries and the fries I stole from his plate were good (fresh cut). The kids meal was plentiful. Overall we all enjoyed our dinner and said we w hold definitely go back again.
google avatar

Catrina D.

Yelp
I have been coming here since I can remember, I grew up in canton and my family and I would often visit for dine in and take out. After moving out of canton many years ago, I recently moved back closer and decided to try my childhood favorite again, I don't know if I went on a bad night or if this is the new standard but the fish was BEYOND greasy, so much that the breading was mush, it lacked in presentation and flavor and for the outrageous price for two pieces of fish and a side I would expect more. I probably will go back to give it another try but if it's like that again I won't be back.
google avatar

Rachel N.

Yelp
This place has the best hush puppies in the world and wonderful service. Been many times and wow!
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
I have loved this place for years! My parents started bringing me here years ago. It's been a favorite of mine. Great fish! I used to get the fried fish, which is excellent but as I've gotten older, I try to eat healthier. So now I get the broiled seafood platter. It tastes great. I still get fried clamstrips with cocktail sauce. A little pricey but the food and atmosphere are great.

Melanie K.

Yelp
I had the broiled scrod for lunch on Friday. It was really good. My dad had the fried perch and it was awful. There was no seasoning in the batter. Plus I don't think it was made to order because it was not crispy. Maybe they fried a big batch earlier that day and kept it under heat lamps. Very disappointing.

Lena L.

Yelp
Sunday is known as Coney's day at Tim's tavern.... Apparently April 25th the day after my birthday they weren't honoring their Coney special at least not for me I ordered 12 counties Nate took my order he comes back and tells me that they only have sauce for two now this was 12:15 okay they just opened up at 11:00 or 10:00 ...I know they hadn't sold that many coneys...I asked Nate how long will it be before she makes some more coney sauce... he states she's not making any today... okay so 3 coneys a@11.99 are you serious!!!! Mr. Murray I'll never come back to Tims ever again.... I guess it doesn't matter if your money is green ... Depending on where you go in Canton Ohio it's made very clear that they don't even want your money.
google avatar

Ben A.

Yelp
Have been coming here for 30 years.. the food is still good on most occasions (depending on the night), but the service has steadily declined as of late...Tonight I came in on a Friday night at around 8:00 Pm with my family. All of the waitresses including the boss were sitting at one of the dining tables drinking pop and folding silverware, not paying any attention to the few guests that were in there. Through the course of the meal, I had to ask for a glass of water for my one year old, my wife had to ask for hush puppies (that have always come with the meal), and my glass of beer sat empty throughout my entire meal...It felt like we were inconveniencing every employee in the place because they were too intent on folding silverware and sending people home...I want to keep loving this place, but with service like this, I cannot do it anymore..
google avatar

Richard T.

Yelp
Upgraded Tim Tavern is famous for good food especially beer battered fish! Prices vary depending on your appetite and selections!! Lots of TVs and talking. Stylish table tops add a interesting look! There are two sections the bar side and much quieter section more upscaled section. That side could handle larger groups better! Food is fantastical! Parking is large close up! Restrooms are clean and newer fixtures. Our favorite place for Fish as we as a generous offering of many other great items!! Wednesday all day they give 25% off all food for those 65 and older!! NNIW THAT IS A GOOD OFFER FOR THE OLDER FOLKS that need a break on WEDNESDAY!!
google avatar

Ron L.

Yelp
I love both the chicken and the fish. Hush puppies and hand cut fries are superstars.

Yelp
Tims has been my go-to place for fish sandwiches for many years. After several years away, I recently stopped in to introduce the next generation to them. The fish was barely edible. It was so greasy. I couldn't even finish it. Plus, I had to visit the porcelain a couple times that night. I don't know what has happened but after so many years - I don't think I'll be back.

John S.

Yelp
So I lived in Canton until 1984 and frequented Tims a bunch. Recently was in town for a golf outing and boy has the food gone south there now. Had Beer Battered fish with fries both came out soggy and cold. The cole slaw was the highlight. Million miles from back in the day.
