The Best Cheap Eats in Jacksonville, Florida | Eater Miami

"Dim sum is a great way to sample a variety of dishes without breaking the budget. One of the best places in town for handcrafted dim sum is Timwah. The restaurant offers a wide selection of steamed, baked, and fried dim sum, including BBQ pork buns, soup dumplings, pork and chive dumplings, and pineapple buns. The menu also features larger dishes for those looking for a more substantial meal. One standout is the fried salt and pepper shrimp, smothered in fried garlic and a mix of crunchy toppings."

Google
Food is only ok. Some items are not up to my expectations though, especially the sesame balls which was disappointing as I really like sesame balls. Other than that though, I would say it is a good restaurant.

Google
Restaurant was a little warm inside. It's small but quaint. Staff is friendly and the food is really good and very fresh, prices aren't terrible for the portions you get either! Everything is made to order so it's super fresh, but you do end up waiting a few minutes versus some of the other dim sum spots in Jacksonville where you can grab stuff off of a cart. I'd still say this is a great value though for the portions and The taste. Definitely coming back when I'm feeling the urge to get some dim sum 👍🏽🙂

Google
Don’t let the 5* review to fool you. There’s nothing special about their dim sum and their menu is very limited. It’s a small place and the service is ok ( a typical Chinese restaurant service). I came here just because of the good reviews but it didn’t reflect the reality. It’s nothing like a typical dim sum place and the wait for food was longer than I expected. Their fried rice was good. I would order for to go if I’m craving for fried rice but wouldn’t come here for dim sum . I was shocked when the waiter brought me the fried egg plant and pineapple bun in a paper holder and no plate for it.

Google
This place is adorable and delicious! One of the best dim sum places I've eaten at and they've got some cute taro cat buns that we all loved (especially the kiddos). We're just passing through this area but if you are ever nearby, this is the place to eat at!

Google
This has been our favorite spot for Dim Sum in Jax so far. Very affordable, great portions, delicious food! Only reason not a 5⭐️ is due to not having the vinegar/soy/ginger/chili oil sauce to dip the food into. We especially loved the Salt & Pepper Shrimp, which we devoured before even snapping a pic. Everything was delicious and fresh. We will be back again! Try them out

Google
This is a bit far from us, but it's worth the travel. The place is cozy and cute. It can only occupy a little certain number of people, and they also have a certain lunch time and dinner time. The food was always delicious and authentic. The service was always good. The price depends on your order. It's a snack shop, so the food comes with the little plates. Which is good when you like to taste everything 😋. So we order a lot. We always enjoy coming for lunch or dinner.

Google
Overall, the food was just okay, nothing to write home about. Customer service was decent, and while the atmosphere was small, it felt warm and welcoming.

Google
For a shopping center tucked away right off of 295, TimWah Chinese Dim Sum Restaurant has great food at an affordable price. As a family of 4 paying for the full meal they have the best price compared to its local competitors

Yelp
Been to many dimsum restaurants threw out the country And this one is incredible They do it right Keep in mind they are closed between 2-5 Get here early
google avatar

Yelp
The restaurant shares a parking lot in the plaza. They have the usual dim sum fav's Our wait time was about 5 minutes on a Sunday afternoon around 2 pm. Our server was pleasant and helpful. The food was fresh, hot and tasty The ambience is casual, clean and busy. Bathroom was decent. The wait times can be longer but it is popular

Yelp
We went to the this spot for lunch and I left very full and very satisfied! And it wasn't even that expensive (there were 5 of us). The staff were patient and helpful and our food was soooooo delicious! The shrimp and scallion dumplings, pineapple dumplings, and the spring rolls were my favorite! The food was hot and fresh and we didn't have to wait to be seated or fed. Loved it!!
google avatar

Yelp
I can't express enough how amazing the food and service was here! Again, the food was absolutely delicious! Even my kids loved all of it! 10/10 recommend!

Alison L.

Yelp
This is my partner and I's go to spot for dim sum. We go here when we're craving good, homey food. They have authentic chinese dim sum (ha kao, classic shumai, chicken feet) and other foods (bbq pork fried rice). We often eat it with oolong tea. The ambiance was casual and light. Service was very friendly! We love this place, highly recommend!

Yelp
We stopped by on our way through Jacksonville, as it was conveniently off the highway. It wasn't a big enough building for servers to wander around with carts like in Atlanta, but the food was delicious and felt authentic. We tried several different steamed, soup and fried dumplings, as well as a noodle dish. This was my first experience with dim sum in over two decades, and it didn't disappoint. We will definitely be back!

Thomas C.

Yelp
The food here is fresh and excellent. Wonton soup is simply amazing, wontons filled with a delicious chicken mix in a nicely flavored broth. Shrimp shumai are fresh and yummy. The been tripe has excellent flavor. Shrimp stuffed tofu is crispy and tender and served piping hot. Only things I'd say take away are the pork sticky bun- bready and light on a too sweet filling and the service is not great. If you might want more than one glass of water order 2 at the beginning. After 3 trips never being offered a refill I'll know next time. Jasmine tea is hot and tasty. Even with the poor service the price and quality of the food make it a sure hit. Definitely will return many more times.

Yelp
Tim Wah is a humbler, less formal, experience than Y & H --it's perfectly fine for dine-in but seems they do a lot of take-away business as well. The staff are prompt and kind and the interior--again--is fine but not fancy, which can be quite nice if you want a quiet and casual experience. Only thing I didn't care for at all was the music: 90s soft rock standards you've heard a million times already at Publix. With all the great Canto-pop and Mando-pop out there, I don't get why Chinese restaurants insist instead on American music we've all heard elsewhere and many of us don't like. It seems halfhearted and detracts from the ambiance. The food did however make up for the awful music. The steamed shrimp dumplings were good and also generously large, the eggplant stuffed with shrimp also large and very tasty, but the pineapple buns were the best--the utter best--example of such I've yet tasted anywhere. Better than several dim sum places in San Francisco for that matter. Just perfect. However, I had to ask for chili oil and it wasn't the finest, either in fact tasted a bit stale. (If you're picky about dim sum, you can be picky over chili oil, too.) The soy sauce on the tables was Kikkoman light . . . I would have hoped for a Chinese brand, especially Hong Kong's famed Koon Chun brand. Diluted red vinegar being served would also be nice, and not done here. So for the actual food, I highly recommend them. The restaurant though for the above reasons like the music and soy sauce feels a little rough though. With food this good, they could put a bit more effort in to really offer a seamless experience that wows but it's not quite there yet.

Yelp
Came in for lunch and the place is clean. Service was quick but the star of the show was the food. The restaurant is not fancy but if you want Dim sum, this is the place. If you're not familiar with the food, there's pictures of the menu and ask if you're in doubt.

Yelp
The service not good and the place is not clean. The taste is not very good I'm Asian I will not go there for that kinda off service and quality of foods and price is not good

Thom S.

Yelp
Ewww, cold food, it all tasted old and stale. I would not recommend this place to anyone. 30 minutes to get a drink, longer for food. A single server was working hard but she was overwhelmed and it just didn't work out for us. Sadly it took longer to pay so we could leave, what a waste of time and money

Yelp
We found this place during our stop in Jax and immediately knew we had to stop here for dinner. I'm glad I did. Their dim sum was amazing. We tried an assortment of stuff, of which the pork and chive were my favorite. The kids loved the siu mai and soup dumplings. Husband and I liked the stuffed jalapeños and the taro bun. My kids thought the taro buns were so cute! I however do not recommend the salt and pepper shrimp. Not only was it too salty, the shrimp was battered (which isn't like any salt and pepper shrimp I've had) and the oil smelled old and overused. Service was fast. Our food arrived in a reasonable time. All our servers were sweet and served with a smile. The ambiance is pretty nice, warm and cozy. Overall I recommend the place.

Yelp
Timwah is a great choice for Dimsum at an affordable price but leaves a little to be desired in a few key areas when dining in. My partner and I love the rice and noodle entrees. They're delicious, filling and reasonably priced. The dim sum ALMOST never misses here. The pork buns and shumai are delicious. My one disappointment on our recent visit was the pineapple bun which was extremely lacking in filling and flavor. The service is generally great here, both dining in and for takeout, but the music being played in restaurant is always odd for one reason or another. It is always the same artist or set of songs being played on repeat. One instance it was 60+ minutes of Taylor Swift, our most recent visit was 60+ minutes of Christian rock music. It was just odd and a little disturbing to the relaxing evening we were trying to enjoy. I think a chill instrumental music playlist could go a long way here.

Yelp
Good food. Fast and efficient service both times I visited. Good parking. Prices reasonable for dim sum.

Yelp
Phenomenal breakfast/lunch! Items come out as they are prepared, piping hot. The taste and flavors were absolutely amazing, and I can't wait to go back. Just FYI this place is small and gets very busy. The waitress was very polite and helpful.

Kat S.

Yelp
Love this place! So many different options to choose from and everything we've tried is fresh and delicious!

Yelp
This is probably my favorite dim sum restaurant in Jacksonville. The other restaurant that offers dim sum is YH Dim Sum, but I haven't found the quality and flavor of their dishes to be as good as Timwah. Timwah was portion size is a little smaller than YH, however. Interior is pretty bare bones with just a few tables.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for the gluten free options and it did not disappoint! The food is so flavorful and there are a lot of GF options. Highly recommend the shrimp tofu, sticky rice, black pepper ribs, and spare ribs. Will definitely be returning. Service is quick and staff are very friendly. Menu can be intimidating but ask for help!

Yelp
We are big fans of Lucky Cat Dimsum and Tim Wah is a sister restaurant. Tim Wah was bright and spacious. Tables were nicely spread out. The service was prompt and efficient and the food was delicious. I thought the steamed pork buns were excellent. I liked them better than Lucky Cat. The dumplings were oustanding and packed full of deliciousness. We preferred the pineapple buns at Lucky Cat because they have a piece of pineapple in each bun along with the pineapple mixture. The ones at Tim Wah did not. They do not serve from carts. The dimsum is definitely authentic and worth a visit.

Bill L.

Yelp
Food great and so was service. Very good dim sum none were greasy all lots of flavor and texture Small place tables full on mid Sunday but food better than dim sum I've had in Hong Kong Seattle New York and Washington DC Prices Very good too!!!

Robert H.

Yelp
Great food especially the rice noodle with bar be que. The dim sum was fresh and offered a wide selection.

Yelp
Stopped by here for dinner before heading to Orlando to visit some friends! We saw that the reviews were great so we tried this restaurant out. Everything came out pretty quickly but we were rushed to order food since we came in a little late. My boyfriend and I really like soup dumplings but were disappointed that they were so dry and no broth or soup were left inside the dumplings. Just wish it still had the flavoring. If we would have came earlier on our road trip to eat here I bet they would have more options. Next time I do not mind trying it again. The Service was also pretty great too! Thank you! I would rate this restaurant a 3.5/4 kinda on the border to be honest.
google avatar

Yelp
In addition to their delicious steamed dumplings, they also offer large plates of noodles and fried rice, each large enough for two people.
google avatar

Yelp
First time here. Reviews didn't disappoint. All food was authentic and amazing and great service and vibe in the restaurant.

Yelp
Located in a strip mall not too far from IKEA. Wanted to try something different and the menu looked interesting so we thought we would give it a try. Walking in all the tables were full except one, lucky for us. Ordered the Salt and Pepper shrimp for an appetizer. It was delish. I couldn't stop eating them. This is salt and hot peppers. It was surprisingly not super hot so don't be shy getting this if you don't like heat. The soup dumplings are just dumplings so don't expect them in a soup broth. They were okay. Not a lot flavor. The chicken and cabbage dumplings had more flavor and nice to have as a side dish. However The BBQ pork stir fry rice noodles had a unique flavor and was very delicious. I would definitely add this as a main dish to share or eat as your own.

Yelp
BEST DIMSUM AT THE 904 We have been frequently dining at Timwah Dim Sum - a Chinese Dish of small steamed or fried savory dumplings containing various fillings served as a snack or usually the main course. There is a sheet where you list your food and drinks and the servers will take care of your order. Our usual pick consists of Shrimp Fried Rice for $10.99 and is always consistently yummy and good for two hungry homies plus 2 orders of Shrimp Shumai dumplings that comes in 3 pieces ($5.25) and Shrimp dumpling Hagao (Round shape) also comes in 3's and the same price and yes, we really love Shrimp lol If you haven't been here you should definitely give it a try and you will be happier camper if you did. Ever since we ate here over a year ago, we always look forward coming for lunch or dinner kudos to Emily, Chef and the crew for the delicious meals. #supportlocal #dimsumjax

Yelp
Good dim sum is a bit difficult to come by in Jacksonville, but Timwah checks all the boxes! This restaurant has a heavy focus on dim sum, while offering a few large plates. This restaurant is GOOD! I was very excited to see taro on their menu, which is a hard find. Their cat and pig dumplings are also adorable! The steamed dumplings were nice and fluffy and the fried dumplings had the perfect crispy texture. Our server was very attentive and checked on us frequently. This is a great spot for a casual meal, or if you want to order a few dishes to share. I'll be back for some more taro!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful dim sum, comparable to places in Atlanta/NYC for their flavor and freshness. They handmake all their items in house daily so it is fresh and doesn't have any preservative taste. They fillings are generous but not overwhelming--shrimp items are packed with shrimp without a lot of filler/starch, the sticky rice had a perfect ratio of rice to meat, the spinach dumplings you can actually taste the spinach in the wrapper. It is not too salty or greasy like dim sum can sometimes get. We are only in Jacksonville for one week and have already been been there twice. Food comes out fast, service is kind, and the place is well decorated and clean. A must visit for dim sum!

Pulkit M.

Yelp
Came here for the first time with a buddy. Food was absolutely awesome. Everything came out piping hot and fresh. Wonderful flavor to all the dishes. The salt and pepper shrimp and the pork buns were my personal favorite. Will definitely be going back soon!

Yelp
Visited on a Tuesday during lunch service. Haven't been in awhile, and it was pretty busy. We were greeted shortly after arrival and quickly seated. The hostess / server was quick to bring beverages and orders out for in house and several take out orders. Since it was busy, it was a bit loud in there. We ordered the chicken fried rice, and a few orders of dim sum. They didn't have cart service that day (might only be on the weekends). My favorite dim sum order is Eggplant stuffed with Shrimp, and it was delicious! Ask for the hot oil to dip your dim sum in. Yummy!
google avatar

Yelp
A new restaurant on our radar. Service was fast, and food arrived quickly. It's very tasty, nice and hot. Go with friends so that you can share. We'll definitely go back. It is in an industrial complex of assorted businesses, but don't let that keep you away. It's worth visiting.

Yelp
I took my nephew visiting from Indiana to Timwah. He was impressed. I'm not surprised. I think Timwah's taste & quality is better than the DimSum place (in a 2 storey building) in New York City I visited last month. The best thing we did was to come right when they opened. Compared to last week, coming for a late lunch & had to wait almost an hour hour outside in the heat. It was terrible. I waited because the food is so worth it. I usually order: Taro fried dumpling, Shrimp dumpling hagao, Shrimp Shumai, Shrimp & Chives, Pineapple buns. My nephew wanted Bokchoy & it was really good. Love this place.

Yelp
In a strip mall in Jacksonville, is super yummy, little dim sum restaurant with the most adorable food. Almost too cute to eat! They stays busy! And does not take reservations, so get there early or be prepared to wait. Ordered: taro lucky cat buns red bean piggie buns soup dumplings classic pork shu mai matcha mochi fried shrimp balls BBQ pork rice noodles The cutest little spot in JAX!

Paul M.

Yelp
So far this is the best dim sum eatery I've found in Jax and SA. Small and cozy. The staff,, eager to help serves piping hot treasures from their kitchen. I lived in NY and for a while I worked on Mott st in China town. So I tried different restaurants and found there is more to Chinese cuisine than Cantonese. I played tic-tac-toe with the rooster and had ice cream in the Chinese ice cream factory. I found a wonderful noodle shop with one English menu and no silverware but fabulous noodles. Now I'll bet they put salt and sugar in everything like the turistas want. 4stars

Yelp
Came here for a company dinner, we had lots of fun, it was sort of tapas style environment, I feel like we ordered almost everything on the menu. You're looking for unique experience and tasty food.

Yelp
Always a great time here at at Timwah Dim Sum Restaurant which makes our tummy happy :) We ordered the BBQ Pork Fried Rice which is good for 2 and costs $10.99 along with the 4 piece Shrimp Shumai Dumpling ($5.25) and the Classic Pork Shumai Dumpling ($4.75) and they were all delicious as usual-Thank you Emily and the Timwah Team for making fantastic food! Tip-They are closed on Mondays so don't come that day as they have been busy on weekends. #supportlocal #timwahtime

Yelp
Took off a few days to get some things done and scheduled a lunch date with my daughters to break up my day. Y'all already know I work in customer service, I like to think I'm good at it... so when I go out... I usually tend to go to places that equal or exceed what I would give to my clients. Walked in on Thursday around 12:30 (so normal lunch time)... go a table for 3... got our glasses of water and menus to look over immediately after being sat. Was given enough time to place our order, food came out in decent time (it is as they cook them), everything.... I mean everything was hot, fresh, crispy, sooo dang good!!!! This is one place that I actually leave happy, satisfied for price vs quality and can't wait to go back! This is a place you would recommend/take guest too! We got sesame balls, mango mochi, soup dumplings, chicken and cabbage dumplings, pork and chive, spinach dumplings, spring rolls, something with beef and bok choy (my absolute favorite, but didn't get a picture) Also... if you are a fan of chili oil..... this place has the best!!! I add a little soy sauce to mine and honestly eat it on everything served (especially my bok choy)... Oh and I got 1 side of jasmine rice to share (we actually mixed with chili oil and rolled up into our steamed bok choy). It really is incredible when restaurants give that special touch of quality and customer service now that places are increasingly high in price yet quality and/or customer service is lacking. Go here, I promise you will leave in a better mood then when you entered

Andrea B.

Yelp
Really hit the mark of you're looking for dim sum. You can find everything on the menu including chicken feet!! IYKYK
google avatar

Amie S.

Yelp
Pretty decent dim sum restaurant! I would say the only downside is that there is a long wait time for the food, but it's because it comes out freshly made. I'd recommend the BBQ Pork Buns, Pork Soup Dumpling, Shrimp Dumplings, spare ribs, and the egg tarts! Although it doesn't hit as much as the big city dim sum restaurants, this is a good place to come to when you're craving smaller Asian dishes.

Bob L.

Yelp
We expected far more from this restaurant considering the reviews. This was actually the worst Dim Sum food my husband and I ever had. The pork Shumai was not cooked,no flavor and what was with the large chunks of grizzle and bone. The Shrimp Shumai was not cooked and no flavor. The shrimp rolls were okay, but really not that good. The chicken fried rice was terrible. Way too much oil and the large chicken chunks were hard and dry. Rice had no flavor at all. No onions, no garlic, no nothing. Was that creme brulee??? No flavor and the worst custard ever. However, the tart shell was fresh and had good flavor. I cook Asian food and quite good at it. The bathrooms were disgusting, and no paper towels. Do the employees wash their hands? Another thing, the servers could not speak English. Never came back and asked about anything. Also, the table tops need to be refinished. Would not recommend or go back.

Lois P.

Yelp
I love dim sum. They have the best pineapple buns in town. Love the varsity plus the pork and rice is fantastic.
google avatar

Kelly R.

Yelp
I ate here with my husband and 1 year old about a week ago. The food was exactly as pictured/ ordered. The service was a pinch slow but we went on a Friday at dinner time and they were full. The chive dumplings , fries, were great. I did not love the pork buns. Overall we had a great time, will use this when our other dim sum place is closed.

Armelyn G.

Yelp
They sell delicious, they even have mochi, fast service, the only downfall is their closed on Sundays, theres a lot of old people eating in there
google avatar

Kimberly R.

Yelp
After looking around in the Jacksonville area and reading previous reviews we decided to give another local small business a shot. Walked in at lunchtime and were greeted and seated right away. Menu has pictures and we were given a scratch sheet of paper to check off what we wanted.. super easy ! This dim sum did not disappoint . Super fresh and hot. Place very clean and server very friendly and helpful. Will return
google avatar

Crystal O.

Yelp
Said to have the best Dim Sum in Jax and I have to say I agree. It took us forever to get here too- closed on Sunday's and Monday's, those are John's days off. I finally managed to go and it was fabulous. The dining room is small, but the food mighty. Service stellar! We had soup dumplings- John's favorite and very well done. Shrimp balls (my favorite) and the best I have had yet. Fried pork dumpling had a hint of sweetness and was perfectly crispy, same for the spring rolls! Chicken and cabbage dumplings were amazing as well. The creme brulee tarts were the only thing that didn't wow me, but they were still good. John also got shrimp fried noodles and we had plenty of left overs for dinner the following night! Can't wait to return and try more.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite place for all things Dim Sum! The food is always super delicious and worth every single penny! Can never get enough of this place. I recommend everything on the menu and Mango Mochi for dessert is always my go to!

Yelp
There is so many things still to try. Definitely come back for chicken shumai! It is not big restaurant but it's good to try real Chinese food

amy e.

Yelp
It was our first time trying this restaurant having just moved to the area. I cannot think of one suggestion to add to the experience that we have enjoyed. The food was amazing and the service was great! The restaurant is immaculate and the entire experience was terrific!

Ron P.

Yelp
We have no idea why it took us so long to order food here! We saw the Yelp rating recently and finally went here and ordered for take out. We ordered a variety of Dim Sum and fried rice with shrimp. Everything we ordered was simply delicious! And the front desk service was friendly and very helpful too answering our questions. You MUST try this restaurant?
