Came here with my girlfriend and another couple after rock climbing in Oakland at around 5PM on a Saturday night. Back in my school days this used to be one of my go-to destinations for Bossam and Korean Fried Chicken! This was my first time coming in a couple years so I was looking forward to the food. There wasn't anyone in the restaurant yet at 5PM, so we were promptly seated and my group and I ordered 2 items + a hotpot to share. This is what we thought of the food!
- Seafood Pancake: This was sadly a miss, simply because they undercooked the seafood pancake. The outside had a nice crispy to it, but when we attempted to actually grab it the pancake just completely fell apart. This made it almost comical for us to eat, since we were spending a lot of effort just to pick up all the pieces of the pancake from the sizzle plate. The flavor was alright, but unfortunately this wasn't as good as most seafood pancakes I've had at other places.
- Garlic Soy Sauce Fried Chicken: The chicken was perfectly cooked, which was a saving grace. However, again the sauce was just... okay. It had a tinge of saltiness from the soy, and a hint of garlic as well, but overall the sauce could've had a lot more flavor. The bits of dried parsley on the top of the chicken didn't help either. Overall, I thought there were some missed opportunities in this chicken, namely the flavor of the sauce. Ah, if only the sauce had been righteous enough to accompany the juicy chicken...
- Kimchi Pork Hotpot: Reasonably sized hotpot that was filled with kimchi, ramen, some dumplings, rice cakes, and pork. The flavor was pretty good, although probably could've been a tad more spicy. There was way more kimchi than pork though - we only get about a small bowl's work of strips of pork in there, which isn't much considering the dish costs $38.00. However, the hotpot was filling and did indeed fill us up and leave us satisfied.
At the end of the day, my memory of the food at Tin & Pig from 2-3 years ago definitely did not match with the food we had recently. The chicken was cooked well but the sauce was a bit bland, the seafood pancake was undercooked and falling apart, and the kimchi pork hotpot was decent buy skimpy on the pork. The banchan was alright also - small and didn't really stand out. Don't get me wrong though, if you're looking for some filling Korean food that will leave you full and satisfied, as well as a restaurant with a nice intimate vibe, then this place will stay do the trick. However, I do believe the food quality here has gone down a bit, possibly due to Covid and the impact that it's had on many restaurants. I genuinely hope that the food quality to go up to where it used to be, because I believe with some small changes and a little more attention to detail this place can become a go-to spot for Korean food again. One saving grace at the end of the day was our waiter - she was extremely kind and gave us fast refills on our kimchi and water. I might come back here in the future to see if their Bossam is still good, but other than that might pass as there are other good Korean options in the area.
