Preface: This review is for the distillery
We were visiting Tin City and had to vamoose, but I really wanted to check out and support the local distillery and grab a bottle of whisky to take home and try.
I walked in and spoke with the friendly guy working the bar, and he was a little surprised I wasn't going to do a tasting as I informed him that I just wanted a bottle to go. He told me of the whisky options of single malt, rye, and bourbon. I chose the bourbon, of course.
We settled up, and I thought the price of $65 seemed pretty good until I got home and noticed that it was only 80 proof. I didn't realize this until recently, but I'm a bit of proof wh0re, and 80 proof might as well be chocolate milk for me. This was no different.
I mean, don't get me wrong, the bourbon was decent, but it didn't really have any distinctive personality and seemed to fit the technical criteria for a bourbon, but it lacked soul--especially when factoring in the price. I can find a really nice cask-strength bottle of Kentucky Bourbon for less than what they're charging here.
If you're looking to start yourself on the whisky journey this is a great stepping stone into that world, but if you're a little more hardcore alcoho...err....connoisseur, such as myself, then maybe this is a soft pass.
P.S. you can find their product for almost half the price here https://gacraftspirits.com (search "Tin City"), which is more along the lines of what their whisky should be priced at.
