Lia’s Lumpia Filipino Restaurant Opens in Barrio Logan | Eater San Diego

"In Barrio Logan I saw a family legacy take shape at Lia’s Lumpia, run by chef Spencer Hunter and his mom, Benelia Santos-Hunter: it launched last fall as a takeout-only spot and they’re holding a grand opening on Wednesday, March 8 to welcome guests into their cozy cottage, redecorated with personal photos and nostalgic Filipino items. Their expertly-fried lumpia comes in classic beef and pork as well as creative fillings like mac and cheese and pork sisig, and monthly specials have included a Kansas City barbecue lumpia and a soul-food version made with pulled pork, collard greens, and dirty rice. The menu also includes chicken adobo tacos, a Filipino Smashburger, kalamansi wings, vegetable pancit, and a longanisa Scotch egg served with pickled pico de gallo, crispy garlic, and kalamansi mayo that ties into Hunter’s new Milagros multi-course pop-up dinners. Named after his grandmother, who ran a Filipino restaurant in National City in the 1970s, those once-a-month dinners (the next is scheduled for Tuesday, February 28) will expand to weekly pop-ups in March as a preview of the modern Filipino restaurant Hunter hopes to operate full-time; the food truck remains parked in the Barrio Logan backyard (not in use for catering or posted up at Snapdragon Stadium) and Hunter plans to convert that backyard into additional seating and event space." - Candice Woo

Food was delicious, I could eat 3 servings of the lumpia! Great pork and spices. I got the pancit chicken, and though there was not a ton of chicken, the flavor was good and the veggies were crisp and fresh. The sauce was a bit tangy, a bit vinegar-y and very nice.

How can you manage to cook a chicken thigh's skin tougher than jerky and raw on the inside? Got the chicken adobo for $15 and only came with one small chicken thigh and a bunch of rice. I took a bite of the chicken on the outside first, there was barely any flavor on it, and unchewable skin. Then when I cut through the chicken it was raw on the very middle. This is 100% a misrepresentation of Filipino food. The chef also did not look like he cared about cooking or being there at the establishment. A waste of time and not worth it for your buck with having a high risk of food poisoning.

On a not too busy day, I paid $40 for 2 drinks- a small dish and an appetizer. The dish my daughter had was okay - my app, was overly cooked and 'meh'. I'm okay with the amount paid, but the expectation was higher. Not enough utensils available- small thing, again, not the big issue. Good for a quick, fast bite - not recommended for vegetarians - small venue, so limited choices - which is absolutely fine. We just hit a day when some of the food items weren't great.

I was excited to try this restaurant’s Filipino dishes, as coming from an island where this is home food I was way more than extremely disappointed. Unfortunately my experience was very disappointing. I ordered shrimp pancit and bistek for around $30, but the portion was extremely small (only three shrimp), and both the noodles and rice were badly overcooked. The flavors were bland, and overall the food felt far below the standard I expected, especially for the price. The fact that these people are out here selling food of this quality is heartbreaking. They do not get an understand how they are misinterpreting the Filipino chamorro islander food. The fact I ordered this food it hurts me so deeply beyond belief this is mentally messing with me right now. I hope you can make this right. I would not serve this food to anyone ever in public or even my sick family member. I legit have to talk to my therapist about this this is how bad this food is.

Google
Ordered the beef empanada, lumpia, and chicken adobo with coco cola/sprite. Lumpia was smaller than I expected but bursting with a ginger beef blend flavor melting easily into my mouth. Delicious!!! The chicken adobo was spot on! Meat easily fell off the bone 🦴 tangy flavor. The Beef empanada is like chicken pot pie without the soupy filling. Love the crust of it! Not too flaky, not too hard. Just right! Went here on a hot day but should of went when the weather was cooler. Overall, first time trying Filipino food ❤️ loved it!

Google
Food is pretty good, kind of bland in flavor. Found a hair in my meal too (my hair is blonde so it’s not mine) We asked for the Pancit Canton with shrimp and they only gave us one shrimp, so kind of a rip off. Chicken skewer was amazing but small in proportion.

Google
Got a bunch of different things to try and share and they were all incredible! Although the food was amazing, the atmosphere and authenticity of the place was so fun and genuine. The owners and their daughter were in, playing hit after hit on the stereo and having great conversations with all the customers in there. Immediately felt like a family dinner even though we were all strangers. See y’all next time!

Google
Waste of money and expectations. Ordered the pork sinigang and had to throw it out. It smelled and tasted like dog vomit. The bbq pork skewer tasted like lighter fluid. I will never eat here again and I don’t understand how this place is still in business.

Yelp
I'm a little spoiled having a bestie from the Philippines. That being said, a busy weekend lead us here to have a quick lunch. Started with the lumpia. Ordered the chicken and pork skewers. Shared the noodle dish and one beef empanada. Everything was delicious. Very well cooked. A little on the smaller side, but like I said, I'm spoiled. Service was quick and the restaurant seemed fairly clean being that it is opened to the outside with plenty of foot traffic. Would totally recommend eating here, especially if you have that certain craving without the availability of a best friend to cook for you. Haha

Yelp
It's definitely a place with identity, place with Filipino flags and emblem displayed proudly, a mural of the owners on the left wall, cute! The menu selections are very typical of Filipino dishes: silog (tapsilog, spamsilog, lechonsilig etc), lumpia, adobo, bistro, goes on.- You enter your order on kiosk, they have rewards program for future promos. Printer was malfunctioning, had to redo order! Confusing as you take receipt and show the cashier that you paid (don't they have their own display of the orders?) Being 1/3 Filipina and growing up In the Philippines I should know good Pinoy food...Now how was the tapsilog? Too greasy to begin with!!! The tapas were oddly too sweet, I miss the delicate balance of sweet and salty. The garlic rice was cooked with garlic powder instead of the real garlic cloves so the aroma isn't the same. The egg was small but it's about the only thing that was decent. For $16 I would expect better.

Ilene H.

Yelp
Quite crowded but they have seating inside which is nice. Prices here compared to some of the other food options in the marketplace are much lower and the food quality is decent. My husband had the spam and egg sandwich which he liked. We shared the pork lumpia with a side of sweet chili which was enjoyed. The empanadas were fine although halfway through in the middle, the meat was cold. Next time I think I will try their pancit and provide an updated review.

Yelp
Didn't call out my number when food was ready, so I finally walked up and found my food. The garlic fried rice was mostly hard, overcooked, and too salty and therefore hurt my teeth to eat. The empanada was tasty with its flakey crust but not great with a conglomerate of grayish chicken filling that wasn't bad but wasn't great either. The lechon or pork belly was pretty good. Very salty. Came with a tasty fried egg and some tomato slices. This meal was nearly $28

Yelp
Stopped there last minute to try it out. We all ordered empanadas, the beef and chicken and they were both very flavorful, big, and delicious. It's very small inside and can be a little cleaner with more drink options along with napkins but overall, I would go there again. The food didn't take long at all and the workers were very nice.

Yelp
816 Scavenger Hunt Stop I had been to Ting's before because, in all honesty, I love Filipino cuisine but, in all transparency, Ting's isn't my favorite. Whenever I spy a new Filipino food truck or restaurant I make it a priority to stop by. Now, the 4 star review should be prefaced with the lumpia is darn good...I would assume it's homemade but it does remind me of the frozen lumpia I have bought and fresh fried from the Asian Market. No shade here because I love the small crispy sticks filled with pork and vegetables no matter in what form but, at some other places they are a tad longer like taquitos. These at Ting's are shorter and have even surface areas, ensuring maximal crispness. Also, all the dipping sauce options are super unique and fun to try. I never know what I'm ordering, but any variation I order is super good, packed with flavor, acidity, and spices. For right around $10, you have a filling and fried snack. Now, they do take a little while to fry up nice and crispy, so be patient because these puppies are worth it! If you're not that adventurous however, you are willing to try a new style of food I would say Ting's is approachable. The dishes don't contain a lot of obsure traditional ingredients like mung beans, salmon/preserved fishes, or red bean. But, they are authentic and traditional. The menu lists the staples such as Chicken Adobo, Panzit, and Lonsilig all my favorites. Lonslilig is a spicy sweet smaller thicker sausage that is red in color but doesn't taste like chorizo at all, a lot less spicy. Give them a try. If protein is your priority there are a lot of dishes on the menu that focus on lean protein such as a beef dish my mom and I split one day for lunch; the beef was very tender and marinated nicely but, the portion for the price was a little small considering America standards. However, with an order of lumpia accompanying it, the meal was full and complete, and we left happy but not over-full. No matter if you know you enjoy Filipino food or if it's your first time tasting it, Ting's is a solid choice and represents an underrepresented style of cooking.

ToyTime with N.

Yelp
The lumpia were really good Garlic butter Shrimp were really good Wasn't fully satisfied with the spam fried rice but staff added more and recommended that I order extra next time. The spam fried rice is $11.99 so you'd think that u would see actual pieces of spam without paying for extra, it's a standalone dish.

Yelp
I had an absolutely terrible experience at Tings. We spent $60 on our meal, only to be served raw chicken. Went back to talk to a manager and the people their happened to be the owners them selves (it was a couple), when we told them about the serious issue they didn't apologize, didn't seem to care at all, and acted like it wasn't a big deal. Instead of taking full responsibility, they only offered to refund the cost of one skewer, which is completely unacceptable considering the health risk and the fact that the rest of the food was ruined and retuned (we returned at least 5 full skewers of chicken out of the 9 we ordered). Came back and the owners (who weren't initially there) claimed to know the story and told us we only returned one and that's all they would refund us for... my question why would I continue to eat the rest of the raw chicken after seeing what I saw in the picture below? Didn't get a cash refund, food refund, or an apology. The lack of customer service and accountability was shocking, and I will never be returning to Tings. Reported to health department and received confirmation that the health department will be furthering their investigation. For your own health and safety, I suggest you stay away!! If anyone turns out sick, I will be pursing legal action.

Yelp
Out of town and visiting KC. Loved to support local business. Food is good, we ordered pork bbq and Tapsilog. Service is fast and you can see them preparing the food. Place is small but clean.

Yelp
A taste of Filipino cuisine. They offer a great menu but way not have some of the items so maybe go earlier in the day. Service is indirect, I respect it but it does take away from the customer vendor experience in my opinion. I had the Tapsilog (sweet and salty slices of beef served with rice, a fried egg and some tomatos) and beef empanadas. The Tapsilog was well seasoned but a bit oily for my liking however the empanadas were extremely pleasant, just wish they had more. I like Filipino cuisine so it was nice to have again. It's pretty active in the river market on weekends which is when I go so it may be a bit noisy. In all this was an experience, will I eat here again? Maybe!

Yelp
- *Mediocre Food*: "I would leave zero stars if I could. The food is mediocre for the price and to make it even worse it is not even close to authentic." - *Poor Quality*: "Sleepy service, poor food quality

Yelp
Ordered 4 halo halo total of 42$ What a disappointment!!!!! Lol 4 tiny ingredients and the rest was Ice! Waste of money ! Take the halo halo out in your menu...please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gezzzz

Yelp
Not all that familiar w/Filipino cuisine other than pancit and lumpia. I had the pork belly Lechonsilog and my husband had chicken adobo. Both delicious. Chicken tender, rich sauce. My pork belly was crunchy on top and juicy fatty on the other end. Our kids had the BBQ pork skewer and longganisa (sausage) with rice. Service time was very reasonable. Sat there, clean tables. My daughter had turon dessert, she loved it. I'd definitely eat there again if we were shopping at City Market.

Brooke H.

Yelp
Bad costumer service, food seemed a little too chewy and bland, employees were rude and it didn't look very clean behind the counter and they didn't even look very clean themselves. Definitely an experience.

Rowlinzon V.

Yelp
Amazing Lechonsilog and tapsilog. Halo halo was also great. Not too sweet and a good ratio of ingredients. The vinegar mix is also savory. I wish they sell it in bottles for home use.

Yelp
Food is wonderful I had the Chicken Adobo, lumpia and pork skewers. The chicken was absolutely amazing it has a crispy exterior, but a super soft interior the sauce is outstanding you're very familiar with Filipino food then this is a place you need to visit if you're here in the Kansas City area, you will not be disappointed fast friendly super great service

Yelp
This Ting's Filipino Bistro is 1/2 of their locations at the City Market in Kansas City, Missouri. It's a very cool food hall concept with a variety of options, but my favorite is Ting's! I ordered the following items and highly recommend them all: * Lumpiang Shanghai w/sweet & sour sauce * Picadillo * Chicken Adobo * Chicken Afritada * Lechon * Garlic Fried Rice If you ever stop by the City Market in KCMO, make sure to drop in and try their Filipino dishes!

Yelp
I'm visiting KC with my partner and we came across this place while walking around City Market. We ordered the rice noodles with veggies and tofu, and a single pork skewer. The noodles were good--came out piping hot and veggies were fresh and crisp. Flavor was very subtle. My partner said the pork was good too. I wish that they had reusable plates and utensils for folks dining in, or at least paper plates. All the plastic felt very wasteful.

Yelp
There is a lot of buzz right now in KC, about a new powerhouse in the restaurant business - Ting Santos. Ting's Filipino Bistro in the City Market is her 3rd restaurant this year, with a 4th scheduled to open soon. Two Filipino and two pizza establishments. My lunchtime visit today was only my 3rd time having Filipino food. My first two times I ordered and shared large sampler platters to experience as many different items as I could. Today at Ting's I ordered an appetizer - pork skewers and a limited time special entrée - Sweet Potato Poutine. The pork skewers were not only delicious, but was one hell of a bargain. For $3.50 I was given 3 skewers, each with 3 large chunks of grilled tender pork liberally covered with a sweet banana BBQ ketchup and scallions. Exquisite! The Sweet Potato Poutine was a Manila meets Manitoba mash-up of the highest caliber. A platter of large cuts of sweet potato fries, smothered in a thick buttery, beefy, creamy gravy and covered in chives and crumbled white cheese. The two dishes complimented each other for a perfectly decadent Friday luncheon. The small storefront in the city market is very compact with a few crowded tables and ordering is done at a kiosk with pick-up notification done via text message to allow you to wander the market shops and vendors without crowding the tight space while waiting. Gotta go with five stars for the originality, presentation, value and tastiness.

Teri I.

Yelp
Lumpia is a basic treasure of Filipino food. The lumpia was tiny, soggy and filled with some sort of meat paste. Maybe I have high standards because I'm used to fine quality homemade lumpia and can see and taste the vegetables. The rice noodle dish was mostly rice noodles lacking veggies and proteins. This place has been closed down for a long time. Maybe it should stay closed down.
google avatar

Arnulfo H.

Yelp
One of the best Filipino bbq! Tender and flavorful! A little char will make it even better! Garlic rice is good but needs a little more on serving size. Servers were friendly and attentive. The place is cozy but needs a lil more touch of the Philippines. On the TV screen they were playing streets of Japan. Value for money is fair.

Maddie R.

Yelp
I had the Lumpias and Chicken Pancit. Both were delicious! The portions were big and the staff was incredibly friendly.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Wow!!! The pancit is on point and amazing and the lumpia are everything as well!! Don't sleep on this place!

Jaena M.

Yelp
Paid 700 for a "lechon" . Filipinos know this isn't a lechon . They said they did it themselves but we to some third party , and this is what they delivered to my house the day of . Then the owners were completely unreachable the day of , and took them a week to get any contact to try and rectify the situation . Then they gave my number to some random person to threaten my family's safety after I told them I'd take them to court ! Imagine you go somewhere , don't receive what you were promised , don't receive a refund , and also receive threats because you want to be compensated for wasted time and money .

Yelp
I was craving ramen and I wanted to check out the restaurants in City Market and found Tings's Filipino Bistro. The menu is simple and straightforward, customers place their order from either scanning a QR code or the walk up touch screen streamlining the process. I was the only one in here so my food took less than 5 minutes and sooo much better than fast food! I finished my plate, the pancit canton, I wish there was more protein in the plate, the 2 shrimp were quite big and delicious though! It's a small place for table seating 20 people. There's a vibrant mural on the wall and during my lunch visit we were rocking out to George Michael and I knew almost every song I will come back and plan to try one of the adobo entrees.

Cheryl B.

Yelp
I love catching a mid-week lunch at City Market. No crowds and great food. Tried Ting's for the first time today, and ordered the Pancit Vegetarian to go. The order took between 10 and 15 minutes, but it was freshly made before my eyes, and oh my gosh, it was delicious. The rice noodles were perfection, the veggies were crisp and hot, and overall the dish had a delicate lemony peppery flavor. The menu says 'soy sauce', but it was used so sparingly I didn't even notice it, which is a huge positive because it overwhelms and ruins so many dishes. Will be back for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Just moved here from the West Coast and I have been craving Filipino food for a while. We visited River market for the first time and we were excited with all the markets and booths. So many choices normally if you frequent or even the 1st time you enter a Filipino restaurant every one who works there know and they will immediately try and help you try and figure out what everything is in front of you! Proud of their cuisine as they should be it is wonderful from the eyesight to the smell. This was the 1st time I saw no human interaction they missed out on so much business because it wasn't inviting and they seemed to be busy with other interaction. For the price I thought it would have been a little bit more but I understand times are hard... if this was your first time eating the food it's not bad but it's not normal from the way it's cooked portion size or taste... the chicken adobo is normally cut into smaller pieces with the taste of vinegar and black pepper being pretty dominant same with the pork adobo and I had no extra sauce in either which I thought was normal especially for the rice? And the skewers the pic says it all I have never seen them that small and lacking sauce! Maybe it was one of those days and it's a one off and I'll leave at that but for a $50 meal I'm just saying......
google avatar

Shelby M.

Yelp
I've never had Filipino food before and live right next to City Market so I wanted to give this place a try. The guy working was very nice so service gets an A+. I got the Chicken Adobo and it was great. The chicken literally melted in my mouth and mixed with the garlic fried rice it was perfect. Will definitely be back

C Y.

Yelp
Checked this out on our visit to City Market. Had meat skewers which were dry and loaded with sauce for flavor. halo Halo was overpriced at $9, loaded with condensed milk with very little other trimmings.
google avatar

Sharon W.

Yelp
Recently went to the City Market location, which I was excited about, and got the Pancit Bihon without the extra meat or noodles. I was a little disappointed because the dish only had little strips of chicken and the rice noodles did not have much flavor. It was overpriced. Had one of their Silog dishes when they were at Parlor and that was fine in taste, but I found it to be very salty.

Brady G.

Yelp
One of the best Filipino restaurants that I've been to great customer service more people should come
google avatar

Mia S.

Yelp
Overpriced and definitely not traditional Filipino food, but ok. Probably won't go back since my family makes it way better and I can go to any of the restaurants in Woodside, NY that serve it the traditional way when I go home to visit.

Lorenzo A.

Yelp
Management is non existent. Went to check on my order and was told they were out of eggs. the employees themselves said they can never get ahold of the owners. one employee even showed me a text that had been sent 2 hours prior to my arrival with no response. location draws you in and the service lets you down.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Loved the Sotanghon Soup with Chicken! Excellent blend of flavors and just what my tummy needed for lunch. Carlos was super helpful and attentive with processing my order through the Toast app.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
I got the chicken adobo, which tasted slightly better than a Walmart rotisserie chicken. I also got a choclej skewer, which didn't take seem grilled, which is what I was expecting. It was soft without any char. It had a slightly sweet sauce on it that wasn't bad.

Traci M.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place every time I go to the river market I have to go here and get something to eat. Everything is amazing. I meant to post this review a couple of months ago and I completely forgot but the last time I was there I came on a Saturday maybe 45 minutes before they were supposed to close, and we were helped by what I assume is the owners children. I had a gift certificate, and of course they had to check and make sure everything was cool . They were so accommodating, so nice and so professional at the same time. the food is always consistently good. My favorite is the garlic rice!! I could eat that all day long.

Kristopher H.

Yelp
we ordered the Chicken Adabo which looked horrible, and unhealthy. nothing near the quality in the misleading picture of the menu. it tasted just ok, nothing unenjoyable but not at all worth the time and price.

Katie R.

Yelp
We love Ting's. Authentic food and awesome people. Great for eating in or catering for a party. We have used them for both. Highly recommend!!! 5 stars

DT M.

Yelp
This place is totally opposite of what Filipino culture is all about -- hospitality. Truth is, besides the great tasting food our nation offer, we pride ourselves in providing exceedingly amazing hospitality and experience. None of the workers here talk to any customer. They are fully automated that you order everything online, but doesn't mean you ignore your customers completely. To the management, you have to focus on elevating the customer experience by hiring people who are people oriented and have a little bit of soft skills. Probably better if you hire authentic Filipinos instead of people who don't look like they want to be there. Lol
