The tacos here are absolutely delicious and incredibly authentic. I ordered three: pastor, chicken, and barbacoa. Each was flavorful and reminded me of tacos you'd find at a roadside taqueria in Mexico. Simple, fresh, and packed with traditional flavors. For drinks, I asked for Jamaica, but it wasn't ready yet, and when I inquired about other aguas frescas, I was told none were available. I opted for a Mexican Coke instead. The total for my meal came to $15.97, which I found reasonable for the quality.
However, there were a few off-putting experiences during my visit that kept this from being a perfect five-star review. I dined in the 8 a.m. hour the morning after Thanksgiving. The dining room was quaint and had a cozy feel, but the loud kitchen hood, located about 15 feet from the nearest table, was a bit distracting.
The service left something to be desired. While Gabriel, the young man who took my to-go order, was polite and accommodating (although he appeared to be quite young, maybe 12), another staff member, possibly named Samuel, seemed less inclined to help. After clearing a nearby table, I asked him what their most popular breakfast tacos were, and his response was curt: "They are all popular." When I inquired further about the "a la mexicana" taco, he gave a minimal explanation and then told me I'd have to place my order with Gabriel--even though we were all within five feet of each other. This interaction felt unnecessarily dismissive and awkward.
Despite this, the food really shone. The tacos were some of the best I've had, and the experience felt authentic, down to the roadside taqueria vibe. If the service were more consistent and welcoming, this would easily be a 5-star spot. I'd still recommend Tio Trompo Taqueria Mexicana for their amazing tacos but suggest sticking to takeout or preparing for a potentially mixed service experience.
