The 22 Best Restaurants In The Hudson Valley - Hudson Valley - The Infatuation

"Tivoli General is a store where you can buy handfuls of heirloom tomatoes, a four-pack of craft beer, and jars of fancy chili crisp. They also make a variety of sandwiches on housemade focaccia that smell so good you’ll float towards the display case like a cartoon animal sniffing for pie. You should absolutely get a dolma sandwich with smashed grape leaves, red pepper cream, and sundried tomatoes if they have it, but their classic options like Italian ham and turkey will be a welcome addition to any picnic spread. On weekend evenings, they also have a night menu full of small plates, natural wine, and local beer, so you can cap off your Hudson Valley experience with oysters in a space with shelves of shokupan rye bread and Maldon buckets." - anne cruz, clare lagomarsino, keith hernandez, chanize thorpe

Where To Eat & Pick Up Fancy Provisions In Upstate, New York - Hudson Valley - The Infatuation

"Tivoli is a town that’s beautiful enough to make you consider buying and restoring an old farmhouse à la The Notebook, but its biggest attraction is Tivoli General’s sandwiches on housemade focaccia. Classic options like Italian ham and turkey will be a welcome addition to any picnic spread, but they also do some great specials, like a dolma sandwich with smashed grape leaves, red pepper cream, and sundried tomatoes. On weekend nights, you can stop by for small plates and natural wine, which is the perfect date situation to discuss your favorite types of ceramics and make future plans to check out the yarn shop down the street." - anne cruz

Cute little shop with a few tables out front. Seems like a local hangout. We had an egg sandwich, sausage roll and flat whites- all were stellar.

Google
Tivoli General is an absolute local gem. Serving up fresh flavors, focaccia that's top notch and coffee that's on point. The breakfast sandwich is a real treat and lunch isn't to be missed. The produce section is stacked with well curated delicacies with influences from all over the world. To top it all off the owners are super welcoming and engaging .. don't miss this spot when you're in Tivoli.

Google
Most delicious lox on focaccia bread I've ever had! Buttery, crispy deliciousness! And the blueberry muffin was great too.

Google
Adorable little spot. They have one large community table that maybe seats around 10 people and everyone shares. The coffee is superb. The egg sandwiches are incredible. Thick fluffy egg, with the right amount of cheese and special sauce, the bread is perfect.

Google
I eat a Bacon, Egg and Cheese probably once a week and this was hands down the best BEC that I've ever eaten. Great vibes and selection plus a kind, caring staff. This place is a destination.

Google
As a sandwich lover, I can say with confidence that the sandwiches here are absolutely first rate. The fantastic homemade focaccia has an unusual crisp crust that holds it all together but cracks perfectly as you bite in. Ingredients and ratios are also great. Coffee was really solid too. Paired with the warm and friendly proprietors, a great experience!

Very friendly people. Great hospitality. Tuna salad is a little too salty for me. Appreciate them kindly giving me lemon

Google
For a while, I came in regularly because they had at least one vegan sandwich and a rather good vegan cookie. Lately, they’ve had neither; pity. Grocery-wise, I feel like the selection is different every time I come in. At some point the items started skewing towards speciality Asian foods, which is neat and different but not particularly useful to me day-to-day. Coffee is hit or miss, and available only in petite sizes (unless you beg). They’re trying to do coffee well, but the staff seems unevenly trained on their espresso machine. Basically, I wish this place was more like Village Grocery in Kingston. It is not, however, so I pretty much forget about it, even though it’s way closer to home for me.

Yelp
Such a great node of cleverness and good sandwiches. The space is a reminiscence if a town general store. With milk, basic groceries and handy products. But the selection of products already speaks of a refined and probably rurally bourgeois urban clientele. Which

Yelp
I've been to this place a few times. The coffee is average to good / decent but the only reason I have been a few times is because there was no alternative in the area. The quality drop over the past year is too significant even if a business is trying to downscale and cut costs during trying times. There is almost nothing on the menu that there used to be: focaccia, fresh sandwiches with quality ingredients/substance. The prices while always high are now completely unjustified for the quality and basic level of food they are offering. The choices on the menu are strange and some of the choices are not very edible. But the worst thing of all, as someone who loves nothing more than going to coffee shops and forming relationships with the people who run and work in these treasured small businesses, is that there is simply no soul in this place. No appetite to serve the customer in a way that feels positive, or helpful, or caring beyond the transaction. The attitude is: bare minimum, transaction, next order. No consideration for offering any of the basics that accompany a meal or coffee anywhere in the world. I hate to say this but when you're not into something you do it shows and what's the point if the customer and the product come last? Even if that's not the intention, that's how it comes across, strongly. Perhaps the business can stick to coffee and adopt a take away only model. Thank you and apologize if this is hurtful - it comes from an honest place of overall dissatisfaction and the negative vibes I have felt when visiting this place.

Yelp
Quaint general store that also serves breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Staff is friendly. Good selection of pre-made sandwiches on focaccia.

Yelp
The food is unique, culinary dream! The shop is for independent foodies! The locals are friendly here, and helpful! Good ambiance, especially if you're with a friend!

Yelp
Special sandwiches with a artistic spin! Music is just right for the various times of the day! The friendly atmosphere and polite nature of the counter staff is outstanding...

Yelp
Delicious and friendly. My go to place for coffee and a breakfast or lunch sandwich. Great packaged snacks that you won't find at a grocery store. Cookies are a star.

Yelp
A delightful little country store in the middle of the towns, main street. I imagine this place caters more to the casual visitor rather than the local resident, as indicated by the selection of items as well as the prices. Nonetheless, it is a quaint general store that carries many of the common knickknacks and sundries that you would expect to find in a store such as this. Friendly faces, abound and many items that while not necessary, would certainly be enjoyable as gifts or souvenirs.

Yelp
Yummy breakfast sandwiches and great chocolate chip cookie. Friendly staff and cute vibe. They have a couple tables on the sidewalk outside if you're with your dog.

Yelp
The thing is the pastrami sandwich was really good but it costs $17 :/ also the potato chips cost $7

Yelp
t's time that Tivoli General begins to understand the role they have in our community. Tivoli is a small village & Tivoli General should be a small village general store. You should have the feeling that you're walking into friendly Sam Drucker's General Store from Green Acres. Not so with Tivoli General. Firstly, the staff is never very nice when you come in & even less friendly when you ask a question like do you carry this, or where is that. Given that their prices are exorbitant, at least be nice. Next, this is a small village General Store, not Walmart. Show some flexibility at least. I showed up a few minutes before opening time to buy a dozen eggs so I could make breakfast for my family & they would not entertain the fantastic notion of being nice & letting me leave more than enough cash on the counter & be off. Wake up Tivoli General. You look the part, & we want to love you. How about acting the part of what you should be to our town, a friendly little store that we enjoy shopping in?

Yelp
They needed to be dropped they use to make sandwiches to ordered which made them a four to five star place but now they are pre made and for $12.00 after two bites it had to be thrown it out afraid I would have gotten food posing the cheese and meat was so warm for sitting out for god nows how long. Go back to the way you use to be a ex loyal customer.

Yelp
I paid for my expensive avocado toast and came later in the day to pick it up - was told I'm too late and that they gave it to someone else - and that it's my problem! I wasn't offered money back or food. Amazing rude behavior. Food is good and service is lame and unkind.

Yelp
Yeah its gonna be a no from me. The sandwiches are okay but certainly not worth the price. Students who work there are sweet (make sure to tip them, they deserve it), but the owners have a terrible attitude. Why is your coffee so weak? Is it systematically diluted? Y'all other reviewers have obviously drunk the kool-aid (or weak coffee) 'cause this place needs to be replaced with an actual 'general store' that doesn't pride itself on its accessibility just for selling cigarettes.

Esther R.

Yelp
Found a stack of EXPIRED curry paste (Best by 2019) and when I told the employee(or boss) in private, he arrogantly said if I wanted the expired products for free! And no, this expensive store shouldn't sell expired products!! I've had good experiences with this store until this employee(or boss) sell EXPIRED PRODUCTS with attitude!

Yelp
Came with a few others who were pleased with their food, which looked good. I'm vegetarian and they had run out of the chickpea sandwich when I was ordering. They had no more eggs so I couldn't get a breakfast sandwich either. I opted for the not inexpensive (8.50) avocado toast, which was fine, nothing special (unlike some avocado toast which I've had, this was literally a slice of toast with avocado spread on it and a few thinly sliced radish pieces). After receiving my toast, I noticed that there was in fact a small portion of the chickpea salad left and asked them to sell it to me but they said they didn't sell it separately, and what they had wasn't enough for a full sandwich, but they were making more of it. I said, "I wish you'd told me you were making more, I would have waited." They replied, "We're making it for tomorrow." I wondered what they planned to do with the dollop of remaining chickpea salad (add it to the new batch, maybe? Gross) but I didn't say anything more because I was pretty perturbed that after spending a total of $60 for a pretty meager lunch (3 sandwiches and two beverages) they couldn't just give me the little dollop of chickpea salad (or sell it to me, as I offered first to pay for it). In short, I would not be inclined to come back here. It was pricy and I don't think customer service is their strong suit. It's a cute little place in a cute little town, but that's not enough on its own for more than 2 stars.

Yelp
Looks beautiful, and the food looks great, but was treated rudely by the person working the counter. I said hello, no reply, I asked about sandwiches, no reply, so I walked out. I was wearing a mask, only person in the store, had come to Tivoli specifically to check out the store, very disappointing experience. Too bad really, as it looks really good.

Yelp
A great beautiful grocery/cafe. If you are looking for food, they have an amazing amount of items for such a small place. You can buy your dominos sugar for the same price as Hannaford, or buy locally made meat and dairy. I think the owners even sell bacon from pigs from their farm. In the small but great asian food section, I even found a can of ground pork and ham, which I have never seen outside of China. Great beer, great stuff. Also, had a delicious bahn mi and iced coffee. YUM.

Yelp
Great products. Amazing products. Love the place! But sadly the owners act like they're from the zombie apocalypse. (Actually zombies would be friendlier)

Adrian E.

Yelp
Cute at first appearance - but staff were really rude, and everything is just so overpriced! This place really capitalizes on Bard College, thinking it's justified to overcharge because of wealthy students. It ends up taking advantage of everyone.

Gat G.

Yelp
The sandwiches are amazing. And the bialys are incredible. People are kind. This place is great!

Yelp
What a gift we have in our little town! A sweet general store that probably has more in common with Harrods food hall than a bodega upstate ny. But that's what's going down upstate. Especially in Tivoli where a thousand super rich Bard students roam deserted lanes and hamlets south of Hudson looking to feed themselves with something they recognize from the metropolitan lives they left behind all over the world. Tivoli General won't disappoint them. The bialy, biscuits and bread are AMAZING and baked by Kazio the co owner. The meat is locally sourced. The cold brewed coffee is pretty damned good. As others have reported the owners Kazio and his wife Natalie don't have a great bed side manner but neither do I. I think it's funny that they are rude and grumpy to a lot of their customers. It's amazing entertainment. Their staff are very sweet... Probably because they are terrified! It's like an old fashioned corner store. Gossip, intrigue and great food. Go on Mondays when the bialy are already pre prepared and you don't have to make a choice from the chaotic chalk board. A bialy for those who don't know is a baked rather than boiled bagel. Tivoli General, every town needs one.

Yelp
This place is the best. The owners know what they're doing, are super helpful and friendly. A much-needed addition to Tivoli. We love it!

Yelp
This place is awesome. I always come by when I go upstate--amazing beer selection, amazing cheese selection and homemade bread?!?! It's like an instant picnic. They have excellent things. Yes, some are pricey... but that is because they are excellent. They also have all the basics you could want/need in a town populated by college students. I so wish it had been there when I went to Bard, but I'm so glad it's there now for when I visit!

Erica G.

Yelp
What a super addition to this village! The lunches are delicious and the service is exceptional! The weekend was very busy, so clearly they are filling a needed void. Even with all the traffic in the store, they managed to serve everyone in a timely fashion, and were super friendly. So great to see customers who range from kids coming in to buy candy, to college students buying supplies and weekenders in for a delicious lunch. The beer selection is outstanding!

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place but come on! The first time we tried it we paid $4 each for a drink called a "Thai" iced coffee, which consisted of some ice, some cold coffee, and some lumps of sweetened condensed milk squeezed into the bottom of the cup by the kid behind the counter. Not exactly sure what's so "Thai" about that, nor why it cost $4 per cup, but whatever. We got suckered by the name, I guess. We tried going back one more time, only to be met by their obnoxious and super grouchy counter staff, apparently defensive about the shop's ridiculous hours. We waited 20 min for them to open at 9:30 am, watching at least 6 or 7 adults (non students) get turned away by some annoyed girl who kept unlocking the door to say, angrily "we open at 9:30," then slamming the door shut again. Meanwhile, a swarm of hipster types gathered outside, also waiting. By the time the huffy and very off-putting girl opened the place, we'd lost our spot in the amorphous "line" and didn't want to wait another 1/2 hour to be served. We went to Murray's up the street instead and were very happy. Should have just gone there in the first place.
