Here are the best places to eat tacos in Ann Arbor | Eater Detroit

"TMaz started as a tiny counter in a Mexican bakery and quickly became an Ann Arbor favorite. In addition to classic fillings like carne asada, al pastor, and chicharrones, you’ll find traditional antojitos, like handmade gorditas, huaraches, and a specialty of El Salvador, pupusas." - John Reyes

12 Affordable Restaurants in Ann Arbor, Michigan near the University of Michigan | Eater Detroit

"Flavor and variety are represented well on the menu at this taqueria. The tacos and tortas come with a wide selection of meats — from the familiar grilled steak to cochinita pibil — a shredded, slow-roasted pork hailing from the Yucatan Peninsula. The pozole, a spicy pork and hominy-rich soup, is another must-have, especially on chilly Michigan days." - John Reyes

Here are the best places to find soup in Ann Arbor | Eater Detroit

"When it comes to heartiness, there aren’t many soups that can match up to pozole — shredded pork and hominy in a pool of rich, spicy chile-infused broth. Tmaz serves a terrific version with a variety of garnishes like lime, shredded cabbage, chopped onions, and cilantro. Alternately, Tmaz’s earthy menudobeef tripe is another stellar option for soup season." - John Reyes

They did not inform me they weren’t putting cheese on my burrito. They claimed they were “fresh out” after I ate the whole thing, realized there was no cheese and called them back to ask why. They didn’t tell me when I called to order or when they handed me my food. Cheese is one of the best parts of the burrito. If I knew there wasn’t gonna be cheese, I may have gone elsewhere or ordered something different. I had not eaten anything for a while that day, so I was excited to get something yummy but it turns out they were not being transparent about what I was getting. Not only this, but I was charged extra for adding guacamole. It doesn’t make sense to not include an essential part of the burrito and charge me extra…

Google
great authentic food very reasonable prices. Their pico de gallo scores. Large menu that goes well beyond the usual stuff. Food is really fresh. Unless you need classy ambience or table service, this is the best Mexican I have tried in Ann Arbor. BTW, after you order they bring your order to the table.

I absolutely love this place. I think I've been here three times within the week. The fact that they are open until 6:00 a.m. is incredible. And the quality is always there. I know that they do a good job in the morning prepping all the food

Google
After years of going here and always getting top-notch service and food, I learned they are open late? Tmaz for the win. Authentic tacos, genuine tortas, and fresh tasty tamales. Tmaz has everything you need. They keep a cooler stocked with cold drinks, a freezer full of frozen treats, and a pantry of baked goods and snacks for the grab and go.

Google
I hate leaving bad reviews but I have to after this one. I ordered one steak taco, one tostada and chips and pick de Gallo. The taco was just ok, the tostada had what seemed to be old crusty beans, soft tomatoes and bad lettuce. The $6 pico and chips topped it all. See pics below; cold, broken up pieces of old hard tortillas. Absolutely disgusting. I ate the taco, took bite of the tostada, laughed at the chips and threw the rest in the trash. I came here because of the good reviews and the pics online but won’t come back. That was a waste of $20 and I am still hungry. I am also mildly concerned about getting food poisoning after seeing their food prep station and the way some of the ingredients at this place look. Yuck!

Google
Stopped here for the first time and everything was excellent! I had both shredded pork and beef tacos, and my wife had pupusas and an enchilada. The staff took time explaining all the food options and are awesome. I will make a point of stopping in for a bite when I'm back in A2 again.

Google
Changed from 3 stars to 4 because the tortas are AMAZING! The rest was ok even though there are lots of good options. Good corn tortillas. The pinto beans were interesting (spicy with hotdogs and pieces of tomato). I am not sure if the black bean option is also spicy or not. The rice is classic. Good seating options. Have high chairs for kids.

Delicious & athentic. Friendly service, and the best tacos we've had since moving to Ann Arbor. This place will definitely be one of our go-tos!

Yelp
After having this place on my "to check out" list for quite some time, I finally managed to stop by recently. Located in a shopping strip on Packard, you can easily pick up to go, or sit down and eat in their large dining area. I had been craving a fish taco, as well as pozole recently, and I was delighted to see that this place had both. For this run I just grabbed the taco since I wasn't super hungry. I walked in, placed my order, and within about 3 minutes it was ready. Back home I unpacked the perfect portion of taco in a corn tortilla and topped with all of the fixin's. The restaurant gave me two varieties of salsa to try, but I found both to be spicy, so I enjoyed the taco without them. I'm so glad I found this spot and will definitely be back!

Yelp
The food is amazing. Everything I've gotten has been delicious. The carnitas tacos are a family favorite.

Yelp
Straight fire flames. Cheap and cheerful, packaged super well for delivery and the food was next-level good. Pico de gallo was super fresh and flavorful. Enchiladas were to die for. Tacos were great but I prefer flour tortillas (not their fault, forgot to ask if they had them). I tried carnitas, Al pastor, and Barbacoa. Barbacoa was the best but all were good. What's strange is that there's an upcharge for certain meats for the tacos but not the enchiladas. Portion size is very generous for the price ($14 for the enchiladas meal) and $3 a pop for the tacos. Green salsa was sooo good as well. I would 100% reorder, no doubt about it. Excellent food at good prices.

Yelp
My first experience with Tmaz Taqueria was a Doordash delivery, and both my husband and I were pleasantly surprised. We loved the quesadillas! We got a pastor and a campachano, and both were delicious and we would order them again. We split a grilled vegetable with red salsa and jalapeno enchilada meal. This was another winner. It did have some spice to it despite being labeled as mild. The pupusas we ordered were less successful. We tried a bean and cheese, and a chicharron and cheese. Both lacked flavor and just seemed kind of nondescript. I wouldn't order these again. We ordered some guacamole and chips. The guacamole was excellent, but I didn't care for the lackluster chips. Not something I would go out of my way for.

Yelp
I was looking for some authentic Mexican food. A place where you walk in and there are locals picking up their meals too and you can't understand them because they're speaking Spanish. This is that place. The place isn't the prettiest but as long as the food is good, who cares?? I decided to go with tacos. You have multiple choices for meat for each category. I tried the Chipotle Chicken and carne asada (beef). The Chipotle chicken was my favorite. Loved the flavor! It was moist too. Some chicken can end up being really dry. Can't wait to return again.
google avatar

Yelp
I was looking to get some tacos with some flavor and Tmaz did not disappoint. The al pastor and the carnitas tacos were excellent. my companion has the asada tacos and she said the beef was tender and tasty. the flavor of the house salsas were very good. I would have liked more heat, but my companoon said the red was too spicy and the verde was just right. they have el yucateco on hand if you want to kick it up a notch. If I could not sell you on the tacos alone, I hope my praise of their guacamole can seal the deal. It was real, fresh, and tasty. Almost exactly what I make for myself at home (I add a bit more black pepper). Give this joint a try, I doubt you will be disappointed.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious and consistently great! I love the tacos overall and order from Uber eats once a week

Yelp
Says open till 11pm and drove quite a bit for it to be closed at 9pm :( Very disappointed, was craving tacos!

Yelp
We are big fans of this place and have been going for years. The ambience is definitely bare bones, but the food makes up for it. If you order takeout, check your order before you leave.

Yelp
Best authentic Mexican in Ann Arbor. Good guacamole. Chips are not the best. Tacos and quesadillas are great!
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
This is exactly what I need five minutes from home. A quick yummy greasy taco place. I usually order a quesadilla dinner plate with refried beans and rice. Cheap filling delicious. Add some guacamole on the side if you're fancy. I can't get enough of this place!!

Yelp
Food was amazing. Good portions. Easy in and out with carry out. Staff was friendly and helped with ordering questions.

Yelp
YUMMMMMMMMMM. If you like tacos then check this place out. I got it delivered for lunch and it was so good. Prices are decent and menu has lots of options.

Yelp
Before my husband and I moved in together he lived on the east side of Ann Arbor and Tmaz was part of our regular takeout rotation. Bu since we've been living together on the west side of town we all but stopped, opting for other places a bit closer to us. Today I was looking to change up my delivery routine for a team virtual lunch and I decided to revisit Tmaz. It was a very good call. First off, it held up remarkably well for a 20+ minute drive to our house. Everything was still hot and melty. I tried something completely new, the two pupusas combo--cheese and loroco and cheese. It was my first time trying loroco and I was pleasantly surprised! It's a green flower bud common in Central American cooking and that was described as having a bit of a chard type flavor. It was very good, a little bitter and paired nicely with the cornmeal of the pupusa and the melty, salty cheese. The pupusas came with a side of rice and beans and together made a very satisfying meal. I also ordered one chicken tamale which was also fantastic. A very satisfying lunch that I'd 100% get again!

Yelp
I am charmed. Tmaz is unpretentious, underpromises, and overdelivers. The menu is made up of a few different basic options such as tacos, quesadillas, gorditos, and tortas, each of which can be made with a number of fillings. I went with one gordito al pastor, and I was blown away. The bread was so warm and fluffy, the cheese so melty, the pork so tender, and the veggies so fresh. It was a perfect snack for just $3.50, and three of those could easily constitute a hearty meal. The man working the counter told me that each individual component of every dish is made in-house, from the salsa to the beans. Speaking of, the salsa was so incredibly spicy and savory that I bought a tub on my way out. They have several veggies options and my wife loved her tacos (one grilled veggie, one mushrooms al pastor). I would spring at the opportunity to eat there again.

Yelp
I had such a strange experience here today. Mind you I've been coming here for about 10 years and pretty much order the same thing every time. Usually I find the staff to be quite pleasant and the service to be of good quality. I usually order some food to eat in the restaurant and some carry out. While I was eating my food, a woman who worked there came up to me and gave me my carry out. No hot sauce. No big deal..."can I have some hot sauce to go?" She bring back a couple hot sauces and tells me that if I want more sauce I have to pay for it. Curious, so on my way out I asked for a couple more hot sauces from another worker. She interrupts him and tells him, no I have to pay for more sauce. The other worker was like, "it's fine," and gave me 2 extra hot sauces to go. Usually they give me plenty of extra sauce, as much as I want, quite willingly. She then starts lecturing me on how in Detroit they give you 2 sauces for 3 tacos and that you have to pay for extra sauce. I gave it no mind as I already got the extra sauces and I'm really not sure what Detroit has to do with anything, so I just left. Anyway, I get home and she messed up my order. I usually would have just gone with it and ate it, but she left an item out. So I drive all the way back over there and ask the other guy for the correct order, and she again jumps in and is trying to tell me that they can't take the food back and that I have to pay for another order!? I'm like, "do you not understand, I want the food I ordered in the first place." She keeps going on about the health department or something before someone stepped in and filled my original order. Can you imagine asking a customer to pay for another order that you not only messed up, but shorted a customer on? Usually places are looking to accommodate you for the trouble. Unbelievable...it's a shame bc I've been going here for years but I don't know if I can go back now. There is a taco truck up on Washtenaw that I think I'll check out. $2 tacos on Tuesdays
google avatar

Yelp
If it's a Wednesday night, most likely I'll be popping into TMAZ for a quick and satisfying dinner. Sometimes, you just need something quick, satisfying, and inexpensive. And for that trifecta of needs, I can think of no better option than TMAZ. But I wouldn't keep going back if the food wasn't delicious. Over my past several visits, I've honed in on some of my favorites. Like almost every taqueria, there are some fillings which are excellent, and some which aren't quite at the same level. My top choice is the al pastor. My daughter always goes for the carnitas. Have I had better pastor? Sure, but not in Ann Arbor. And sometimes the carnitas isn't quite up to snuff. But at $3 for an overstuffed taco, or $4 for a meat and cheese quesadilla, I'm not complaining. The tamales are tasty, although I"d pass on the pupusas. I've yet to try the tortas, but am looking forward to a sandwich one of these days. And the soups sound fantastic, for when the weather turns truly cold and bone chilling. But with friendly service, bargain prices, and a production system that can crank out your tacos at break neck speed, I am most definitely a fan.
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
Pleased as punch with this place! Tried one of each type of tamale and was left wanting more. This is the real deal, fair pricing, quick service, and super friendly. I am going to see if they cater as I cannot wait to share!

Yelp
Came here for some take out during stay at home order. The service here is very friendly! The folks behind the counter are kind, patient, and helpful. I recommend definitely supporting this small business! I came here on a recommendation for vegetarian tacos. They certainly have a diverse menu. And lots of different type of combo options for ppl who want to try different things. I came specifically for tacos tho! So tacos it is! I got their Asada, chicharron, and carnitas. Maybe I just love meat which you can't go wrong. I would come back again for the chicharron and asada! My bf ordered from their vegetarian taco menu. He got their fish, portobello mushrooms, and potato and peppers. He said out of all of those, he would consider ordering the mushroom one again (maybe because it tasted like meat!? Lol) he wasn't a fan of the potato or fish ones, which were bland to him and slightly disappointing. Finally, we ordered some chips and guac verde. The guac tasted fresh and yummy. Overall, not our favorite ann arbor / Ypsi taco place but we would be happy to come back again to support and try other portions of their menu.

Megan D.

Yelp
Always excellent food and service - they are so nice and accommodating, plus the tacos are the best in Ann Arbor

Brittney C.

Yelp
It's looks a little rough around the edges but it was delicious! Service was great and the food even better!

Armor W.

Yelp
awesome place with awesome staff, great choice of sauces and food, great vegan and seafood options as well. -MO

Yelp
Regarding the Ypsi location........Worst encheladas ever! The "grilled chicken" was so dry and stringy I couldn't chew it! it must have been sitting out all day. and was totally dried out. When I called the place to let them know, the person who answered the phone just said "ok", as if to say "so what?" No apology and no offer to correct. I can't say much good about the rest of the food either-chips were stale and the guacamokle had lots of filler material. Never again Tmaz. I live in this area and know lots of people who will hear about this.
google avatar

Sherri A.

Yelp
I actually gave this place two times of visiting before I decided to write a review. I really don't like giving reviews that are less than perfect, but someone has to do it. The tacos are mediocre, but def not for me. I love sour cream on everything and they gave me sour cream that was like water. Yuck! I think they are are on the high side of cost for being a small take out place, I'd like to see the cost, esp for this side of town, come down some. As for the people there, they were very friendly and nice!
google avatar

Ebony M.

Yelp
The employees seem very nice and the food pretty good I'd definitely eat here again .
google avatar

Yelp
I tried this Mexican restaurant since I heard really good things about it and it definitely lived up to those expectations. The tacos are very authentic and they have meats that other taco restaurants. I would highly recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Brandon A.

Yelp
Great in person or pickup. Do not grubhub. Ordered at 9:20pm on a Saturday night when they were supposed to close at 10:45. Got a call from Grubhub at 10:04pm that they decided to close early and Grubhub would be refunding our money. Ok fine. Except at this point almost everything is closed other than pizza and fast food.
google avatar

Dennis K.

Yelp
Needs to do some more work on their prices. They are pretty high now and it's just not worth it for each taco to be so pricey...
google avatar

Travis S.

Yelp
This place is legit. They have a lot of genuine Mexican dishes, and don't feel like they cut corners. They're getting their dining space improved steadily, and the service has always been quick and friendly. I really am a sticker for chorizo, but some places have really fatty stuff. TMaz's is just fatty enough. I've had it a half dozen ways now and have never been disappointed, but don't be surprised if it leaves your tongue burning a bit! If it does, just get a frozen fruit bar on the way out. That really soothes a burned taste bud.
google avatar

Chloe F.

Yelp
Some of the best tacos in Ann Arbor, hands down! Tmaz has a great variety of veggie tacos, my favorite being the actual vegetable taco. Add a little El Yucateco and they are perfect. A little divey, but authentic and cheap. The only downfall - it has become much more popular over the course of a couple years. I definitely recommend ordering over the phone and picking it up. If you're lucky there might be a table open.
google avatar

Katherine P.

Yelp
This is our go-to Mexican spot. It is all SO good! The portions are enormous, the prices are fair, and I would encourage everyone I know (and don't) to try this place. I can honestly say it continues to get better over time. My personal favorites are the tamales (insanely large) and quesadillas (chipotle chicken!) but everything I've ever tried, I enjoyed. I really like the green salsa they include. The orange is a bit much for me. What can I say? I'm a wimp. Do yourself a favor and try TMAZ. You'll thank me. :)
google avatar

Harish V.

Yelp
Used to drive by this place quite a few times a week but kept procrastinating to try and finally tried it last week for dinner and it was pretty good experience. Me and My friend both ordered meals with Tacos/ Tamale / Gorditas with your chosen meats of your choice that comes with rice and beans. We ordered 2 Gorditas with chorizo and chicken and drink which costed us $20 . Everything was pretty good and with decent portion. Pros: --------- Good Food Decent Ambience Spacious Quick Service Friendly Staff Free Parking Other Food options next door Cons: -------- None to me I would definitely return for sure and recommend you to try this place if you haven't tried.

Yelp
Amazing pick for tacos. Local area. Good prices. Many options. They even have a small place to but tortillas, chips, and ice creams. The quality of their meat is amazing. I've been going here for years now. I love it.
google avatar

Yelp
The best and most authentic tacos I've had in Ann Arbor, no doubt about it. Delicious. Completely exceeded my expectations.
google avatar

Yelp
Stranded in A2 for a couple hours while my car was getting worked on, I found this place when looking for a spot to eat and charge my phone. I was very happy to find Tmaz to be an authentic taqueria. Multiple protein options, tortas, and my first pupusa! My guy behind the counter was very helpful in helping me navigate the impressive selections. My el pastor taco was delicious and simple. The frijol y queso pupusa was perfect and the tomato sauce that came with it was gorgeous. The gentleman who ran me up (the owner?) was very polite and, I can't stress this enough, a total rock star for letting me use his outlet to charge my dying phone. I had half a mind to order more food and hang out but the garage called to say I was all set. I will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Tmaz has been on my wishlist for a little while. Typically when I see a decent looking Mexican restaurant with good reviews and authentic fare including street tacos (Al Pastor) , then I definitely look forward to trying that place out, and Tmaz is definitely one of those places. When I went in, I had been walking for a while that day and I had become tired and hungry so I was actually aiming for a quick shot of Coca~Cola, and to enjoy the cool AC air indoors since it was sweltering outside at the time. This was during the initial wave of businesses re-opening, and Tmaz had clearly made many changes to how they conduct their business. They seem diligent about following all of the rules, laws and appropriate guidelines set forth, and they maintain a clean atmosphere along with fastidious efforts to provide good service to their customers.

Neechi M.

Yelp
Loved the food here on our cross country road trip. Couldn't have asked for anything more. We got 10 tacos and guac for two people which was waaaay overkill but as a plus we didn't need to eat dinner after we had this for lunch. I was confused between which guacamole to order (the standard vs. the other one that I'm blanking out on the name) but just know that we enjoyed the standard one better. I think I liked the taste of the other one (I think it had something to do with jalapeño) but the consistency was less to our liking so we didn't finish it. The tortilla chips were great. As for the tacos, the standard meats (carnitas, carne asada) are your best bets. We tried some of the others but none were that great. Moral of the story: don't experiment too much here and you should be golden (and full!). Outdoors seating is a major plus - our dog was more than welcome to sit out there with us.
google avatar

Maura D.

Yelp
Best Tamales and Tacos in Ann Arbor! (excuse my half eaten food I couldn't wait) When you come here don't judge a book by its cover the quality of the food outweighs its looks. If you're looking for looks and not quality, take yourself to Taco Bell.

Brian L.

Yelp
This is the type of place you're going to want to gatekeep from your not-so-close friends. Great food, good service.
google avatar

William W.

Yelp
I was lucky enough for a friend to bring me to Tmaz, it's delish! Very authentic Salvadoran cuisine with sooo many options. I tend to order a few tacos and a few tamales, the tamales are some of my favorite. They also have a few salsas I really love, the avocado salsa is mouth watering If that isn't convincing enough, they serve authentic papusas!!! It is an extremely casual and modest location with a good prices on great Latin food! I'm excited every time I eat here! Check the photos and you'll want to see for yourself
google avatar

Shannen B.

Yelp
Hands down the most amazing tacos in Ann Arbor. The barbacoa is very moist and tender! The Pastor is also really yummy. The guacamole is always worth to get because they come in such a huge portion! The other great thing about this place is also the self-service salsa that you can take all you want. The place might not look the best, but seriously!!!! GO HERE!
google avatar

Jessica Y.

Yelp
Seriously yum tacos! Good variety of meat fillings from al pastor to bistec to cochinitas in addition to the staples (e.g., carnitas, asada). The star of the night, however, was the handmade corn tortillas -- TOO DIE FOR!!! A stretchy, chewy, sink-your-teeth-in texture and thickness, sooooooo good. They have 6+ flavors of aguas frescas, and a whole ice box of paletas! What I wasn't happy about was the $5 price tag on PICO DE GALLO listed as a SIDE...? It should be an automatic freebie, or at most, a $1 upcharge since it costs CENTS to make. Will def be back for the tacos solos!!!!
google avatar

Blaise B.

Yelp
I feel like this place was way over-hyped on Yelp. The food wasn't awful or anything, but I definitely don't plan to return given the other better options in the area (Taco King!!!). I tried Tmaz twice, ordering something different each time, and both times I was disappointed with the taste.
google avatar

Danica S.

Yelp
A hole-in-the-wall hidden gem, Tmaz not only has the best Mexican food in the A2 area but it also has the most variety of Mexican foods! I was so overwhelmed by the menu, in a good way, that I had to ask the staff working there where I should start. The staff are very friendly, too. In addition to Mexican dishes, they also have Mexican snacks you bring back home.

Yelp
Atmosphere: 2 out of 5 Service: 3 out of 5 Décor: 3 out of 5 Cleanliness: 2 out of 5 Food: 4 out of 5 The tacos are excellent, very flavorful and tasty. I got 50%off from groupon which is good deal. The restaurant smell wired when I walked in. Tables were dirty. If you don't mind all this, then the food is terrific, you won't disappoint it. Recommendation:

Helena B.

Yelp
I just love all kind of food there, a taco, a torta, a huarache con bistec, enchiladas, tostadas, they never disappoint me. You can't buy just one thing and if you are thirsty try de hibiscus water, tamarind water and horchata water, all the waters -sooo good- Thanks to the Hervert-Trinidad family, they always care about the customers
google avatar

Josie S.

Yelp
I heard of Tmaz from a friend and was eager to try this cheap and authentic place. As other reviewers have stated, it is quite a hole in the wall type of place, but I really enjoyed the rugged scenery. The tacos were delicious, only thing I would do differently is ask for an extra type of sauce with them. ADDING GUAC IS A MUST and definitely worth the extra $.50. For about $9 I was able to get three tacos and they were VERY filling and definitely worth the price. Kinds we tried include: spicy fish (my favorite), mushroom, veggies, Chipotle chicken, and grilled chicken (chipotle was better than the grilled). The staff was SO NICE and polite and welcoming. It was a bit crowded when we got there around 7pm and the line moved kind of slow but that was understandable as they only have a couple people on staff. I would definitely go back and am happy I tried it!

Yelp
I'm sorry but I was not impressed. Again, I had high hopes mostly based off of the Yelp reviews so I went in with fairly high expectations. I can eat anywhere from the fancy foo-foo restaurants to the hole in the walls. Actually, most of the time, I prefer the hole in the wall places. I would definitely classify it as a hole in the wall. The establishment itself is not big at all. They have a few tables indoor and a small seating area outdoors. Inside, you place your order at a small counter. It takes a little while to get your food because they make it fresh but I didn't really care for the tacos that I tasted. My eating companion and I tried a variety to get a good feel for the place and none of them were memorable in my opinion. Its saving grace for me was the guacamole, which tasted super fresh and flavorful. And the desserts. The desserts were really the star of the show for me. The apple and pineapple turnover were pretty amazing! They have a good variety of Jarritos as well, which are always good. If I went back again, it would be solely for the guacamole and the turnovers. Actually, I did try to go again but they were out of the turnovers so you can imagine my disappointment since that was my only reason for going back. :-( Also, on a side note, the first time I tried to go here, they were closed. The hours on the door and Yelp indicated they were supposed to be open but they were closed with no explanation. I probably won't be returning anytime soon. There are just too many other places on my list. Sorry (shrugs shoulders)

Yelp
Very disappointed this time. Place really seems to have gone downhill. Dine in area was dark and looked like a place that was out of business. Seemed dirty. Old equipment sitting around. Carnitas were kind of tough and dry. Used to be our favorite taco joint.
