The Best Restaurants to Try in Carmel Valley | Eater San Diego

"Tucked away in a Carmel Valley office building, this mom-and-pop café is the first restaurant concept from Toast Catering in Point Loma. Behind the dining area is a hidden garden with citrus trees, artichokes, and herbs used for the dishes. Open for breakfast and lunch, the avocado toast and grilled chicken sandwich are regular hits. Be on the lookout for seasonal specials like bulgogi and vegan poutine." - Helen I. Hwang

Very quiet and relaxing place to eat. They have outdoor and indoor seating. The Philipino Breakfast burrito was very tasty and filling. Mexican mocha was just the right amount of sweet. Breakfast sandwich was a very decent size. Would definitely come again. Service was very friendly and helpful.

Google
Great cafe to work and meet. So much indoor and outdoor seating with plenty of outlets. Great selection of food and drinks as well! Service was great, as they bring your order to your table and the ambiance is pretty quiet. Pretty family friendly and a great age range of customers. I was impressed to see this so tucked in an office building. It’s really cute!

Google
I found Toast Cafe while waiting to pick up my husband from surgery - and what a find! The Salmon toast - with crème cheese, capers, dill and finely sliced onions, was fabulous, coffee was perfect, and service - from order taking through serving and take out - simply delightful! Great atmosphere- quiet and lovely - with indoor and outdoor seating!! I’d give it 10 stars if possible!!

When I came next to building, I was like what? Where is cafe? In the building? After I saw 👀 omg! Everything is awesome. Very simple menu I love it! I don’t like bunch of food very confusing. Clean, cozy, modern! I love that. Food was soooooo delicious 🤤❤️😍 I highly recommend!

I really enjoy a clean and inviting atmosphere! It’s always nice to relax in a warm environment with friendly staff and the food is good.

Google
This was our first time in this cafe. I saw that they have sisig burrito and was curious how it would turn out. I’m Filipino and know what authentic sisig should taste like. Me and my husband were surprised how tasty the food is. Although it wasn’t the traditional sisig, it was still very delicious! It’s more like beef fried rice with fried egg wrapped in a tortilla. To be honest, I don’t know how it would turn out if it has the sour taste to it. We loved and enjoyed every bite of it. Ask for the vinegar to dip it in. Try it! You will not regret it! We would definitely come back the next time we’re in town.

Located in Carmel Valley on the ground floor of an office building in an office park is TOAST Café. I have seen other locations in Los Angeles called Toast, but I am not sure if they are the same owner or not. They have a very similar menu though. It’s basically a café with limited food and drink options although everything is high-quality. It’s not a traditional full-service restaurant, but we still had a nice experience. You order at the counter and then they give you a number and then bring it to your table. They have a handful of food options, but none are large portions. They have a very eclectic menu with Filipino, Turkish, and other traditional American options. Being in an office park, there is plenty of parking so finding a spot will never be an issue. The woman behind the counter was extremely polite, and all of our items arrived quickly. They have indoor and outdoor seating, but on this cold December morning, everyone was seated indoors, which is where we sat as well. Given the limited menu, I did not have many options, but for my breakfast I chose a Caramel Latte, which was very good and strong, just how I like it, and the Breakfast Sandwich with bacon added. The sandwich was very filling with plenty of egg and cheese and I overall really enjoyed it. I wish the menu would have more options, but given that it’s a café I understand they have a limited kitchen and staff to fulfill larger types of orders. It is fairly priced though and overall I would recommend, especially if you are in the area.

Google
Really appreciated that they had a vegan option and knew what they were doing (the receipt stated that the brioche bun would be ciabatta, mayo would be subbed for plant-based mayo, cheese would be vegan cheese). It was really good, more than the typical burger, even with added arugula. Well-priced, great service, wonderful ambiance.

Yelp
We came here for brunch and it's located inside the Torrey Plaza building. They have al fresco dining and grow their own plants! We ordered at the counter and I got a matcha latte and he ordered a coffee to start with. For food, we shared a Turkish breakfast, and Filipino breakfast burrito, and a croissant Nutella French toast. The drinks were great. The Turkish breakfast was beautifully presented and came with two sunny side up eggs with dill yogurt and Aleppo chili oil, pita bread, olives, feta, tomato, cucumber & fresh herbs, butter and quince jam, whipped ricotta & saffron apricot jam, labne with olive oil, potatoes, and fresh fruit! The burrito was very tasty! It came with sisig, garlic rice, fried eggs, pickled red onion, cilantro, and tomato. I also loved the dessert as well. Overall, the food was very flavorful and I would love to try some of their toasts next time!

Yelp
We found this Awsome place on Yelp and I am so glad we did. We ordered the Turkish breakfast and the two of us shared it. I can tell you it was the best breakfast I have ever had. I even asked to meet the owner himself and give him a compliment on such an amazing restaurant. I wish there was one near to our home about 30 minutes away. The price was very fair. The food was very fresh. We even ordered two glasses of orange juice, which was freshly squeezed. . You won't go wrong by going to this place I promise .

Yelp
Hidden between some office buildings, this place is a hidden gem that needs to be known about. Toast offers great breakfast and lunch options with a huge inside and outside dining area. The vibes are great inside and can definitely be a study spot as well. There is also plenty of parking in the lot next to them and there is no charge. I have not tried the main dishes yet but the truffle fries and The Elvis are amazing. The Elvis is a peanut butter smoothie that has chunks of peanut butter which I personally love but would recommend to ask for your drink blended more finely if not. The truffle fries were amazing as well and reminded me of a crispy McDonald's fry. It was a little small but made up for it in taste. The service was knowledgeable and they brought out the food to me very quickly! Overall give this spot a try I will be back for their main dishes soon.

Yelp
Toast is a totally nondescript restaurant that will surprise you with how good the food is. Almost all the food is made fresh (except maybe the bread) and it's all seasoned beautifully! I tried the Ain't Your Classic Burger which was absolutely delicious!! Full of flavor and fresh! Plus great fries too! I also had the Seasonal Salad which was light, fresh, and so so good! The lemonade was great too. Parking is free. The ambiance is casual. The only sad part is that they're only open during the week. The service is good too!

Arina P.

Yelp
I can see why this place is so popular within the locals and tourists! Outstanding service, delicious food, and wonderful ambiance. I'll start with the food: Breakfast served until 11:30am. French toast and Filipino burrito are a huge hit, I can see why always flawless, perfect blend of flavors! As well as Breakfast sandwiches you gotta add a slice if Nueske Bacon (the most perfect bacon you can dream of). Turkish breakfast is literally a gem on the menu, just genius! Lunch is from 11am until 2pm. Toast Royal Cheeseburger is what heaven on earth feels like. All the sandwiches and salads are perfectly crafted and always fulfill my cravings and appetite. Can't forget their delicious Vergnano Coffee, one of the best in town! I highly recommend this place to everyone!! You will not be disappointed. Huge thank you to the hardworking team for making my experience great every time! Pictured my favorite: Roasted Turkey Sandwich and Brussels sprouts.

Yelp
Fantastic lunch spot in Carmel Valley! I am jealous of those that work in this business area because they be eating good! My friend & I ordered a bunch of dishes because we literally wanted the entire menu lol. Our servers were super friendly & big shoutout to Kim for showing us around their beautiful garden where they actually prune herbs from & use in their dishes, so cool! They have dining inside & out. Filipino Breakfast Burrito: My friend & I love Sisig & growing up, we learned about all the different ways Sisig could be made. But as a burrito?! We have yet to have that! & omg, their version is delicious! Super flavorful & the garlic rice was everything! I highly, highly recommend ordering this one. Turkish Breakfast: Now this is a meal! This was a plethora of tasty dishes, savory & sweet. Mmm! The Elvis Smoothie: Get this! Elvis anything is my weakness & their smoothie was to die for!

Yelp
This locally sourced eatery is a terrific place and no doubt a hidden gem in San Diego. I stopped in for breakfast and ordered the breakfast sandwich, which came with three cage free eggs, sharp white cheddar, arugula, a chipotle aioli, on toasted brioche buns. You can add Nueske bacon to the sandwich for an extra fee. I loved that they used a soft scramble for their egg preparation. They did a great job on the eggs. They were light and fluffy. The eggs were very tasty, and the thick cut bacon was very flavorful and had a good chew. I loved that they took the time to toast the brioche buns. The aioli was tasty, the arugula peppery, and the white cheddar had a touch of sharpness. I had a cortado with my breakfast, and it was great. They offer a quality Italian roast. The cafe offers inside and outside seating. They also have grown many of the herbs they use on the premise. They offer great customer service.

Yelp
Found this place on Maps/Yelp and have been wanting to come for a few weeks and it did not disappoint!!! The space is SO cute and inviting. Great work space to get your creative mind flowing. Had a matcha latte which was delicious and just the right mix of matcha flavor w/sweetness Going to try the food once I'm hungry lol Found my new little gem spot for sure!!!!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem, literally. It's located inside an office building. Friendly and welcoming. I ordered breakfast and a salad for later. I thought I ordered the breakfast burrito, but apparently I didn't. It was still a satisfying. The salad hit the spot as well. The sitting area is open and clean. It's worth checking out.
google avatar

Yelp
Love love love this hidden gem. Today I tried the Turkish breakfast and it was amazing! Everything was so fresh and beautifully presented.
google avatar

Eve M.

Yelp
Omg this place is a cute little gem. We had the Turkish breakfast and let me tell you it was amazing. Cute outdoor seating area. Coffee was perfect. Service was good you order at the counter and they bring your food out so not much to comment on that part. But please go here sooooo good !
google avatar

Georgiann E.

Yelp
Cute place, inside office building, nice outdoor patio and indoor seating, friendly service, food fresh cooked to order but processed taste, texture. Got the grilled chicken sandwich rubbery, fried chicken sandwich crispy well breaded, burger good but meat tasted like a drive in food stand. Waited 18 minutes for food and it was not hot, brought out by cashier after taking someone's order. Fries are shoestring style salty so weren't very hot $54 for a subpar lunch. Like the service, ambiance, food not the food. Not very busy for lunch won't be back.

Yelp
Great place, got there early morning, one of the few places open that early. Amazing atmosphere amazing staff

Yelp
Good lunch spot on workdays. Like the salmon special - nice and peppery with a kick of spicy. Mango salsa is nice and refreshing.

Yelp
The brioche breakfast sandwiche with bacon is the best breakfast sandwiche I have ever had in my life. I've eaten all over the world. Nothing tops what I just ravenously devoured in a beautiful modern setting. The eggs were undeniably small farm fresh. The type you would get from well fed backyard chickens. The aoli sauce has a great savory flavor that perfectly balances the sweetness of the brioche bun. The bacon was closer to pork belly than actual bacon and was absolutely mouth watering. 10/10

Yelp
We found this little cafe, based on previous yelp reviews, very highly rated. We tried the avocado toast and added the 7-minute egg I think the server could have explained that 7 minutes means it's almost hard boiled. I thought it was just ok because of the egg, my lovely wife loved it. The cafe is set in a commercial building which for me takes away the whole cafe vibe. My only additional critique is the cost. I paid $24.00 for an order of toast and two espressos.

Melinda W.

Yelp
The Mexican espresso was the best I have ever had! It was hot, rich and so creamy. I was even able to have it made with oat milk due to a milk allergy.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
Great food great staff. Would eat here again especially if o lived closer. The flavors are so interesting

Yelp
Tucked away cafe in an office complex around Del Mar. Interior is very nice as you go through the comfortable lounge seating before heading to the counter and the large outdoor setup. Decided on the Latte ($4.50) to go along with a Banana Bread ($4?). Latte is rich and strong, without any extra sugar needed. Banana bread is soft with a good banana kick. Highly recommended to pair with the coffee. Outdoor patio is great to get some work done and they do have free WiFi. Fine spot for a break or breakfast.

Reem Z.

Yelp
We had such a great time and experience. We celebrated EID AL FITRH and the service was really good.
google avatar

Kelby D.

Yelp
The food was delicious. We are visiting from Las Vegas, and decided to try this cafe based on yelp reviews. Staff was very friendly! My son ordered the Filipino breakfast burrito which had garlic rice, fried egg, and sisig. It tasted great!! The chef told us it was the first time they served it. Highly recommend! Our breakfast overall was good. Loved the ambiance as well. Nice decor and very cozy.

Yelp
Nice vibe especially outside. Good place for a lunch meeting. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Came to check this place out based on all the five-star reviews. Interesting location. If I worked in the offices around here, this would be my usual cafeteria. Nice decor, both indoor & outdoor. Service was fine. You order at the counter and they bring you the food so not much to talk about. Food - it was good but I wouldn't say five star quality. I had the Angus burger. Nicely cooked to a medium, juicy, and the cheese went well with it. But the bread was a little cold as were the fries. Definitely better than three stars, maybe a four star but nowhere near a five star. I took a couple bites of my wife's salad. The veggies were fresh but I wouldn't say the dressing was outstanding. Can't say there was a wow factor. If in the area and I wanted a sandwich, I'd give this place another shot.

Yelp
SO NICE, cozy place must visit!! Don't hesitate to be here! Especially outside vibe is so amazing!!

Yelp
Great Brunch place. Got Turkish Breakfast, food was very fresh and enough for 2 people. Very kind staff and price is reasonable.

Mojgan A.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem! So delicious, so welcoming, so unique, so tastefully presented. We came here at just the right time to order off the breakfast and lunch menu! We got the must have Turkish Breakfast, the breakfast sandwich, the double crispy chicken sandwich and the burger and fries. All of them were superb, large portions, fresh ingredients, unique flavors, and beautifully presented. Their chai and latte drinks were also amazing. They are open during weekday business hours only and located in a professional building. The indoor and outdoor seating is expansive and comfortable. They apparently have a large-scale catering we vice as well. Totally recommend!!!

Megan H.

Yelp
Food is amazing. Fresh and tasty. I will be coming back and back and back. I ordered the salmon toast
google avatar

Aisha P.

Yelp
This place is randomly located in an office building type place. When you first walk up it doesn't look like it's going to have good food. Behind that little order counter is what appears to be a full kitchen. If you can overlook those things you will have lovely meal. The dining area is spacious with both indoor and outdoor seating. When we went there (on a thursday around 8:30am before hitting Torrey pines for hiking) it was very quiet and serene. We ordered and then sat ourselves and they brought to food out to our table. The breakfast we had was surprisingly delicious for this little office building cafe. We didn't fight any crowds and couldn't have been happier. Highly recommend if you want a tasty breakfast and don't care about "the scene". The small menu has something for everyone! Ample parking in the building lot.
google avatar

Goli P.

Yelp
If I lived or worked anywhere close to here I would be here every single day. They are only open on weekdays I believe and close at 2pm, so please check hours before you go. As other yelpers have said, this is a hidden gem. They are located in a commercial plaza in a business building. Their outside seating is so charming. It is full of herbs and flowers that they actually use. The breakfast we got was phenomenal. My husband even high fived me when we got back to the car for finding this awesome place. We ordered the Turkish breakfast and boy were we surprised. The food was generous, the presentation was lovely, and the taste was amazing. You can tell from the color of the yolk of the eggs that this was a pasture raised happy chicken who laid these eggs. The heirloom tomatoes tasted like sunshine. The warm fluffy bread and the melted butter and jam were finger licking delicious. Everything from the yogurt, to the fruit, to the herbs was pure perfection. Sitting outside in the sunshine and eating our healthy and tasty breakfast gave us fuel for the day. Can't recommend this place enough!
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
The ambiance beautifully enhances the lay back surroundings! The Patio is the perfect spot for a bite of yumminess!

Bast B.

Yelp
We got to see the gardens where they grow many of the ingredients they use in the salads and avocado toast. The capucchino was good and the iced matcha latte was good as well. The presentation of the dishes was beautiful. The service was pleasant. The avocado toast is amazing with 8 min egg and the breakfast sandwich on brioche was really good. We took salads to go for lunch later and also was delicious. Everything was outstanding here.
google avatar

Judy H.

Yelp
This is a quaint eatery with a nice outdoor patio and a healthy yet tasty menu to choose from. It's on the bottom floor of an office building (I think as we were there on a Friday and no one was in the offices). The office building gave us something to explore as it's a modern building that shouts, "Please work here and you'll enjoy your job because you'll love your surroundings." The cafe is walk up ordering. The staff was friendly. The tables were clean. The food was above par.
google avatar

Monica T.

Yelp
This is a cute little place in a building of some type of co op or we work / the price points are a bit high - but I'm sure if is to off set cost. The food was great.

Blake D.

Yelp
The best breakfast spot I've been to in Del Mar and all of San Diego. The staff is so sweet and the food is PHENOMENAL! I loved my latte and the breakfast wrap. Will be coming back!

Yelp
I've had Toast cater a number of my corporate events and they consistently knock it out of the park. The food is delicious, on time, and delivered with a smile (Thanks, Barb and Kim). 10/10 would recommend them for your next event or just for a nice lunch.

Yelp
All good / great coffee - staff - atmosphere and location !!! Awesome ! really enjoy visiting Toast !!

Yelp
Great place. Staff was super nice. Food arrived pretty quickly. The food was really good. I really enjoyed my French Toast. The lunch menu looked delicious with a good variety of choices. I will definitely come back for lunch. I recommend this nice quiet place for a very enjoyable meal.

Yelp

Yelp
Cute spacious cafe inside a corporate building. I go here for their brioche, egg, cheese, arugula, and chipotle aioli breakfast sandwich. It's delicious!

Lisa C.

Yelp
Service is was excellent! Our server was friendly and attentive. I had the giant pancake and an egg, such joy! Light, fluffy, hot and fresh. My friends had eggs Benedict they both cleaned their plates.
google avatar

Isabella G.

Yelp
TOAST is located inside this large office building/business center. I came here around 10am on a Monday morning so parking was pretty tough and the lots were full, that's to be expected because it's inside this office center. The indoor and outdoor seating areas were very modern and cleanly designed. I ordered the breakfast sandwich which was very yummy! The eggs were soft and tasty not over-cooked or rubbery. Overall super good! I don't know if more than $8 is worth paying for this sandwich but it does have 3 eggs and the ingredients might be organic, not sure where I stand on that aspect. Service was good and the guy at the front counter who took my order was friendly and personable! :)

Yelp
While on a recent trip to San Diego, I had a few afternoons to myself as my husband had to go into the office so I went to Yelp to find a healthy lunch - And I was immediately intruiged by TOAST Cafe - The pictures just looked delicious! I typically do not review after only one visit but this was too good not to review! The location is a bit funky as it is located in the back of an office building. There are several restaurants located in this plaza and plenty of parking to go around. There will be a sign located outside of the office building which makes locating it super easy - Upon walking in, just walk straight to the back. Easy, peasy! I had the pleasure of meeting the husband and wife duo that own TOAST and they made the experience that much more enjoyable. The wife {my apologies as I did not get her name} was an absolute doll! I let her know it was my first time in, I found them on Yelp and had to check them out solely based on the reviews and the photos. The owners also walked around to each table to check in on their guests to be sure everything was to their liking. Service to the max! On a side note - TOAST opened just before Shelter In Place took place and I can't imagine the hardship of starting a new business right before a "shut down". I will always support a local business in any way possible. I couldn't decide between two different salads and asked for a recommendation - I went with the Greek Heirloom Tomato Salad {this was a seasonal salad and the last day it would be on the menu} - Great recommendation! Red, yellow and green Heirloom Tomatoes with thinly sliced Red Onion and Black Olives topped with an awesome seasoned piece of Feta Cheese and the perfect Crispy, Crunchy Garlic Bread - Mouthwatering! I'm a sucker for a Greek/Tomato Salad but this one takes the cake! The dressing was light & refreshing and had just the right amount of tang - Perfect, in my opinion. And that crunchy Garlic Bread - I want this in my life everyday! I topped this off with a 1/2 sweet, 1/2 unsweetened Iced Tea - Delicious! I can't wait for my next trip to San Diego - I will be hitting up TOAST immediately upon my arrival! If you are in the San Diego area - Check them out!

Yelp
On the ground floor of the Torrey Plaza building is where TOAST Cafe resides. They offer inside seating in a wide corridor along with outside tables in a courtyard if you want to dine al fresco. It's a nice option for employees of businesses that are building tenants. The food menu featured salads, sandwiches, toasts, and various breakfast items. I phoned in my order ahead of time and got a Steak Sandwich ($10.50). It was made up of flank steak, balsamic caramelized onions, blue cheese, and garlic aioli on rosemary ciabatta bread. For a check-in, a free drink of my choice was offered. I picked the sweetened Rishi Tea which was a national brand of organic caffeine-free tea. Since no one was dining on-site, I took advantage of the empty space and sat down at a table to consume the food and drink right away. The steak was cooked medium rare. The meat combined with the glaze from the grilled onions made a delicious flavor profile. The iced tea was a refreshing chaser to wash down the sandwich. The man who staffed the service counter was pleasant. I gave my experience a four star rating.

Yelp
To me this place is ok; I guess I was expecting more due to the raving reviews. To start, service is a bit lacking. They weren't rude, but the girl that took our order seemed annoyed that we interrupted her conversation. She took our order, just fine, then went back to her phone call right away. Food and coffee comes out in a timely manner. The power breakfast was ok. 1 toast, egg whites, little cup of fruits and some avocado, which were not fresh by the way. The avocado toast was good. I think 4 stars is a bit generous, but it is 1030, almost 11 in the morning, so maybe its a little early. I dont think I would return and definitely wouldn't have spent 30 bucks for this.

Yelp
After a business meeting up in this area my coworker and I got hungry and decided to go to toast Cafe to get a bite to eat. It was right next to our meeting so with the good reviews we decided to give them a try. Toast Cafe is located inside a business building but is a very cute restaurant. The decor here is very modern and feels very open and comfortable. It is a count of service Cafe and you order at the counter. The cashier was very nice and friendly. She greeted us with a smile and gave us some time to look over the menu. I was pretty hungry so I got myself the farmers market salad to share and breakfast sandwich. My Coworker went with the collard green melt with fried chicken. I was quite surprised here the food was delicious, more than what I expected from a cafe inside of business building. My breakfast sandwich came with the most perfect scrambled egg and it was tasty and delicious. My coworkers sandwich was equally as good as I got to take a bite out of it also. My coworker thought this sandwich reminded her of what her grandma used to make and loved it. We'll definitely come back and try whenever we're in the area!

J S.

Yelp
The Toast Cafe in Carmel Valley (El Camino Real) offers amazing food. I've enjoyed their beef Angus burger, Tuna Melt, and their Grilled Chicken sandwich and couldn't have enjoyed a better meal (well, Ruth Chris is pretty good food). The food is fresh, prepared timely and the staff are all super nice and accommodating. If I was looking to blow my diet (if I dieted), Toast Cafe would be in my top 10 of protagonists.

Yelp
Very tasty, fresh food and friendly service. Very comfortable seating. Great for lunch and breakfast. Would come back here again. Thank you!
