The Best Restaurants in Portland’s Woodstock Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"From its name, Toast might sound like a too-precious “New American” restaurant of the Portlandia era; instead, however, it’s more of a down-to-earth — but not uncreative — neighborhood café. Breakfast and brunch are the main attractions, rich with savory haymakers like the pork-belly-and-fried-egg Golden Pig as well as a decadent French toast topped with orange-vanilla whipped cream. Locals come for the extended afternoon happy hour, which might feature specials like tender, gamey lamb burgers or creamy, nutty Gruyere mac and cheese. The $5 happy hour gin and tonic is hard to beat." - Nathan Williams

Google
Toast is officially my favorite brunch spot in Woodstock, and beyond. The food is amazing, and the people are too. The ingredients are fresh, the flavors are delicious, and the portions are plenty. The owners and staff know the community and are happy to share what's happening. Need a post-brunch plan? They'll tell you what's going on in the neighborhood that day, that week, that month. It's a place I want to show off to visitors when they come through, for the food just as much as for the friendly, happy vibe.

Google
Small casual breakfast spot. It was busy at the time i came but the table and service were fast. The pork belly was good!

Google
Four and a half stars, rounded off to five. All eateries charge too much. Take it or leave it. But Toast competes well in terms of dollar value, between the portions and the taste of the French toast and eggs we shared on a recent visit. What I appreciated most was the fellow who greeted us. His assurance of a short wait for a table proved accurate. As it turned out, he also waited on us, keeping the water glasses filled, remaining pleasant and composed, not once making me wonder where he went. We will return.

Google
Great little Portland neighborhood breakfast spot. Personal service, food is solid, good coffee. Don’t blink when driving down 52nd or you’ll miss it!

Google
Good neighborhood restaurant. Friendly staff. The food was good. A little on the pricey side for what you get and they did not offer me any flavored creamer. I could not finish my 2nd cup of joe because it just did not taste good. I currently have a double charge on my debit card from this place and one better fall off. I understand what covid did to our hospitality industry, unfortunately, while businesses have the ability to increase prices to recoup some losses the consumer just takes it in the shorts. In the end, it is always the consumer that gets screwed. I don't get to eat out very often so mediocre experiences are really disappointing.

Google
Calm and peaceful atmosphere. This is a unique place. You can pick a mug off the shelf to use while you enjoy your meal. It's a rather simple menu but you can customize. Currently I'm eating lower carbs so I had the grilled veggies and two over medium eggs. It was delicious 😋. Mom loved her eggs Benedict with 🥑. They do have adult beverages. I choose a non-alcoholic drink. It was tasty. Prices are reasonable. But the owner makes it even better by his wonderful smile and jolly attitude. We will be back for sure!

Google
I absolutely love this place. It might be a bit spendy but the quality is beyond comparison to most any breakfast in the area. Scott was energetic and sold every plate with a story. I had the country eggs Benedict whilst my bestie had some pork belly better than I've ever sampled. I could be happy having a meal like that once a week. Do yourself a favor and eat here...

Google
The food is good don’t get me wrong but I feel more flavors could have been added to my dishes. The dish was a little bland. The guest service is wonderful and the food is good for the most part. 4 star review.

Yelp
First time at Toast and I was excited about the menu and the fact that they have delicious looking "faux tails". I ordered the black current lemonade and it was delicious but next time I'll definitely try a faux tail. I did not see those until after I had ordered my lemonade. The Duke was so yummy and flavorful and the potato rosti was a great add-on. It was a lot of food but I definitely would go back to experience some more on the menu.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
First time in since the new owners took over a while back. I had the French toast which was excellent. My wife had the Duke, and she really liked that one as well. The owner is super helpful/friendly and will answer all your questions. The outdoor eating area is great place to eat if you have a dog. (p.s. try the orange juice, it's great)

Yelp
This is one of my favorite hidden gems in Portland. The drinks are good and the food is fantastic. Pro tip: Don't sleep on the pastries, they are amazing. The service is really the shining star here. They are friendly and hospitable. I feel like a regular every time I go in, and I'm certain they don't know me any more than the people at the table next to me. If you get a chance to make a stop on a nicer day they have a great patio as well.

Yelp
Somehow Toast is perfectly hidden right on a main road in Woodstock. I drove by for years and finally decided to stop in for brunch. I'm bummed I waited so long - this place is incredible. They bake all their own breads and pastries so the menu focuses on bennies, biscuits, French toast, and breakfast sandies. They use super fresh, hyper-local ingredients - you really can't go wrong. My favorite is the 52nd Sando. They call it a sandwich, but you'll definitely want a fork and knife. The vibe is super mellow, welcoming and not crowded. We like to eat at the counter so we can watch the magic happening in the kitchen.
google avatar

Martin W.

Yelp
Wait time was none! And service so friendly. Great selection of food items that are not regular items like ground beef on a bread with salad and sunny side eggs on top. Delicious. Or the crispy pork belly on toast. Easily a spot to get back to. Service very friendly and fast. They make some special lemonades (like black current lemonade) as well. Yumm.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
The service was good. The food? Not so much. I got the Eggs Benedict with Ham. The eggs and Hollandaise were great. I could finish chewing the ham and had to spit over half of it out. The side of braised greens were EXTREMELY salty and couldn't finish them. Would have sent them back but the server was busy. I sat at the counter and noticed that one of the plates on the "clean plates" stack was splattered in egg yolk and grease. Pointed it out to the server and she said " that's no good" and removed it immediately. Was definitely not worth the $39.50 for one breakfast.

Yelp
Busy place. Quaint. Delicious food and drink. Parking is tricky but worth it. Helpful and friendly staff.

Yelp
Awesome food, awesome customer service and ambience. We tried a couple breakfasts and we loved it. Fresh food that tastes delicious. Well done! Refreshing to find a place with such great menu.

Yelp
I've been going here since they first opened. They make me feel welcome, serve great food quickly by true chefs. And they welcome special orders-- see the "deconstructed Bad Ass Sandwich" with avocado subbed for hash browns (at my server's suggestion when I said "you can hold on the potatoes-- gotta watch calories." Then my friendly server-- Bobbi-Jo-- shared that she is now the owner, after 10 years working here. I'm so happy that a great tradition of serving our community continues. My thanks to the entire crew.

Yelp
We were in Portland for the weekend and went to Toast twice. It was that good. Everything was fresh and tasty. The staff were so friendly. I wish I had a place like this near me. I would go every weekend.

T O.

Yelp
Fresh and quality food. They do tea just perfectly, not the cheap tea bag but actually brew with loose tea leaves with boiling hot water. No short cuts, every dish is cooked like a mom cooks it for you. Service is professional, friendly, nice, considerate. They treat you like you came home. Ambiance is clean, specious, not fancy but good taste. Of course, I am coming back.

Yelp
worst service i have gotten in a long time. the waitress was impatient and rude when taking the order. the order also was not correct when it came out. at least the mimosas weren't dog shit

Yelp
I have driven by this eatery so many times but never gave it a try until my sister and I wanted to try something new. One look at their menu made me ask why we had never been here before. Today is my second visit and I have dragged along my husband. The interior is simple but but inviting. They have outdoor seating. But, it is the food and service that shine. Gluten free options - they have English muffins and house made bread. I had the French toast and it was delightful to me. They also have a long list of cocktails (no surprises) but also some non-alcoholic mixed drinks. No need to feel left out pursuing sobriety! The service is good. When taking my order in the second visit, the waitress knew I was gluten free, either remembering from my last visit or overhearing our conversation and using it to create a good experience. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star is that I really want a gluten-free dessert or pastry option and haven't seen one. This place is likely to see me regularly for brunch.

Yelp
Had the Biscuits n gravy and it does not disappoint. The gravy is absolutely delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
I wanted to order the Northwest best, but they ran out of salmon:( My second choice was Wilber and it was good. The pork in the Wilber was tasty and the side of rosti was seasoned well. The meal is a bit pricey and the amount of food was just ok. Our waitress was nice. The restaurant has counter seatings and tables. It was pretty packed when I was eating there. Overall, it's a cute little restaurant. Parking was easy and it's all residential parking.

Yelp
Service and Food were amazing I had some friends visiting from New York, and they absolutely loved place and the food, of course !
google avatar

Yelp
This place is so so so there's not a huge variety in the area, the toast was delicious. The menu is a little slim, the staff is great. The ambience could use a little update.
google avatar

Kristen W.

Yelp
I love Toast, especially their eggs Blackstone! "Spicy red pepper-crusted bacon, poached eggs, avocado, English muffin, and made-from-scratch hollandaise sauce. Served with hashbrowns or mixed greens" After eating this incredible concoction you need not eat again for days! :-0 It is the stuff dreams are made of.
google avatar

Cristina C.

Yelp
Let me start with saying this place is adorable. The service is good. I really found the food very dry. I asked for all the sauces they had to temper the dryness of the dish. The drinks were very tasty.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Fantastic brunch dishes in a very unassuming location. It looks a little rough around the edges but they are cooking up some delicious options for you. I had the biscuits and gravy and a Bloody Mary, and I was a happy camper! Great service as well.

H P.

Yelp
Food: 10/10 simplicity was extravagant. Drinks: fresh water and delicious seasonal drink Customer service: 100% PRIME, quick to respond Ambiance/atmosphere: cozy, felt at home, relaxed, clean, comfy... loved my experience here. I will be coming back!

Yelp
This is the second time I have been here and again I was delighted with my breakfast. The servers are always very friendly and welcoming and I feel like I'm part of the neighborhood. I have found both of my breakfast dishes to be very flavorful and excellently prepared, and the coffee here is amazing; our server told us that it is delivered by bike, which I find to be so very Portland. I love it. I have recommended this eatery to others and I recommend you try it too. You won't be disappointed.

Luke L.

Yelp
We had the Bybee belly and the eggs Benedict and they were both some of the best breakfast we've had in a long time
google avatar

Diana H.

Yelp
Needed to get out of the house for an attitude change and we chose the perfect place. Toast hit it! Bobby Jo (sp?) our server was just the best thing to change our mood and served us with a smile and several stories. The coffee was great and they had oat milk for my daughter who is also allergic to eggs. She had the Triste subbing avocado for eggs and she said it was amazing! My Glen Thomas sandwich was probably the best freaking breakfast sandwich I've ever had!! The flavors of the eggs, sausage, cheese, greens and veggies (peppers and onions) on a super English muffin were just fresh and alive! I took one pic of it pre-build and another post-build and bite! So good! Can't wait to return!

Yelp
Toast has always been the spot. Been coming here since I was a kid and finally making a review because it's my last time here before moving out of state. Went with my normal, the Golden Pig. As normal, it's amazing. Come here. It's a neighborhood restaurant (owned and operated local)
google avatar

Yelp
The Hollandaise portion was skimpy. English muffin cold & not toasted. I asked for a Chai tea it wasn't available. Overall disappointing experience.

Retha P.

Yelp
This morning, we arranged to meet friends we hadn't seen in a few years. I had heard this place had great breakfasts. However, I am very disappointed in the service we received today. Our friends requested decaf coffee and the waiter brought them tea pots with a diffuser inside with ground decaf coffee. The result was awful! The coffee was weak; it does not steep well like tea. Also the food they chose was substandard when it was served. On top of this, the waiter bringing the bill announced the price of $67.50, broadcasting it so everyone could hear, instead of discretely handing us the bill. The price was way too extravagant for what we received. We do NOT intend ever going back.
google avatar

Yelp
This is kind of a smaller mom and pop breakfast and brunch spot that the locals love, and for good reason. The food is very fresh and farm to table. I started with a huckleberry cocktail which was quite good. We ordered the Eggs Benedict and the Golden Pig for our breakfast. The hollandaise sauce on my Benny was delicious and rich, the eggs were perfectly poached, and the hash browns were home made and very good. A+. The Golden Pig was this large piece of pork belly with fresh avocado, pico de gallo, and an assortment of garden fresh green beans that were delicious. They make this habanero sauce that I highly recommend for the eggs. Both dishes were great and I look forward to visiting again.
google avatar

Nicole A.

Yelp
Toast is such a lovely little place. The food is excellent, the staff is friendly and accommodating, and every experience I've had there has been top notch. I'm a huge fan of brunch and Toast is one of my top go-to places in Portland.
google avatar

Kymil P.

Yelp
Food is good, but not as amazing as they hype it up to be. And it's incredibly over priced. I'm very shocked. It's quite abnormal pricing I feel. And I'm pretty used to how brunch is a bit pricey. They are very nice. Ambiance is okay. I didn't feel I had much space and the table across from us kept bumping into use because it was a full table and they were so close by to us. It became uncomfortable so I left. My experience wasn't the best. I just know what rate of flavors I expect from a brunch eatery, especially one that charges like they do. But I am sure there's a reason why, though I don't know that reason, so for my having a sheer lack of information, I'll bump it up to 4 stars.
google avatar

Yelp
From the Afternoon Delight Food menu we had the pulled beef - an open face stacked Toast dish ($16) with very lightly dressed slaw on top. It was good...but then came the Sausage and Peppers dish!! Holy Moly the sauce, roasted veggies and and sausage ($12) were incredibly delicious. One of the best light plates i have ever eaten..and i have 64 years of foodie experience. Don' plan to share the sausage dish...you will want every bite. No kidding. I enjoyed the Oregon City IPA with both dishes...and Alexa Wiley's band starts playing outside at 6:30 for a perfect summer evening. Really, Just perfect. Will come in for Breakfast ASAP. Note - they are not open Mon and Tues I think. Worth calling to confirm and possibly try to reserve a table. Appreciate they keep your water glass full, also. It is attention to the the little things. Hope they endure.
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
This is second time I've been here and, though my French Toast dish was tasty, I have to say I was disappointed that I had to ask several times for a coffee fill-up (nobody ever came by to offer a fill-up), the place felt drafty when I first sat down but got overheated by the time I left, and a waitress interrupted a conversation to present our bill (Somehow it felt like a rude intrusion). Sorry if I'm a picky diner.
google avatar

Abigail C.

Yelp
Our favorite breakfast in the neighborhood, or anywhere! Such care is put into everything this little café does, it's phenomenal. The service is excellent, the coffee is strong, as are the drinks. And the food is utterly sumptuous.

Amanda H.

Yelp
food was SO good, and you get a really large portion for the price ! service was also incredible, staff was super friendly and kind, definitely would recommend for brunch
google avatar

VENA S.

Yelp
Well to start, the waitress held the door open fir us upon entering and exiting. My husband uses a wheelchair and the door opened outwards. From the get ho you could see that they liked working too. The coffee was good and the vibe was upbeat a d friendly. I had the French Toast which is huge! The bacon was crispy and delish! This was on e of the first breakfasts cafes I found years ago. It's been a good place to go when in Woodstock.

Yelp
This little gem might be one of my new favorite brunch spots. I dont think that many people are aware of this modest place as it was mostly empty when we arrived at 10. Ordered a peach fizz and pink lady, both were pretty decent. The menu has your classic brunch options ( Benny's, hash etc.) But they are on another level. The not so dismal was a different take on the benny's using toast, ground beef and over easy eggs. The mustard aioli brought the dish together adding that bit of creaminess and acidity and to the ground beef mix. It came with a potato rosti, which is essentially a hashbrowns pancake. Theres was so creamy and soft on the inside, yet crispy on the outside. I'm currently looking up recipes on how to make them for myself. The hot sauces here are also notable mentions. They have two sauces firsta carrot habanero which is spicy and has a little acid taste from the vinegar. The second is a chipotle sauce which is smokey but be warned it is VERY HOT for the casual hot sauce enthusiast. Really hoping this place stays low key so i can continue to be lazy on going to brunch early.

Yelp
A refreshing treat from the usual breakfast / brunch fare. Creative delicious dishes! Our four dishes were a good representation of the quality ingredients and flavorful preparation and nice presentation. The El Cerdo Verdo was tempting from the menu description and it did not disappoint . The flavors of the blood orange vinaigrette dressing and the verde sauce with the creamy polenta was just amazing def a stand out dish! The other big fab dish was the Northwest Best Salmon where it sounded like it was smoked salmon like Nova Lox it was salmon filet with the most delicious full bet side sauce my son literally cleaned his plate and we ordered some more sauce even. We also had the Bad Ass and Glen Thomas which are more open faced breakfast sandwiches which you can close up but are chock full of stuff it is challenging. The Bad A. had huge pieces of bacon and the goat cheese perfectly complimented the dish. The Glen Thomas has posdible house made English muffins definitely not Thomas' while it really good, it didn't have the same amazing flavors as the other dishes. Definitely a good choice for someone who wants a more straight up breakfast sandwich. But no question we look forward to returning especially to try their Dungeness crab Benny on Sunday!

Yelp
I've been eating at toast for a while now, I've had the opportunity to dine during all types of weather and experience their changing menu. It's a cute place, really! Sadly I have to rate it 3/5 stars, it's mainly for food. Service was good and the staff have always been friendly and inviting, but we come here to eat. Food quality has been dropping slowly over the past years, it's hit or miss and I wouldn't doubt it's because of the overwhelming demand and popularity of this place. However, after comparing it to local brunch spots in Portland and at the price point of $15.00 and up, it's not worth waiting ON AVERAGE over an hour to get a table to get "ok" food. This time around we got the: -HAM EGGS BENEDICT $15.00. The Benedict sauce lacked flavor, it was creamy but bland. It's served with a shredded potatoe cake on the side, it wasn't that crispy and also lacked salt. For the value of this definitely isn't worth $15.00. -GO HOME THOMAS around $15.00. Tasted like a basic scramble, the veggies were a bit over cooked and again, lacked seasoning. There wasn't much to be desired. The bloody Mary's here are alright, I would suggest to get the moon one as it's better than the regular original. They also do not have any gluten free bread options to sub. I also got an orange juice and it came in the smallest glass, water also comes in small cups. Still love this place, but hope to see quality improve, will revisit one day! Until then I'll be brunchin around.
google avatar

Tad L.

Yelp
Extremely nice people and great food! Had the Bad Ass Sandwich, which was delicious and messy! The potato rosti was perfect to go with the messy sandwich.
google avatar

Emilio L.

Yelp
Not really my thing. Portions are kind of small when considering what you could get at a chain diner for $20/plate. Yes you support local and small businesses but...it was kind of underwhelming. Flavor was ok. Presentation was nice. Drinks were decent. But not a place I would revisit (in my opinion.)

Tamara P.

Yelp
$23 for an eggs Benedict with bacon is actually absurd. MAYBEEE with the smoked salmon this price would make sense, but even then, it is much higher than other spots in Portland. They were out of at least 5 items, which left the server in a not so great position. Pancake batter, Canadian bacon, greens, etc. This happens, but really, why even open until you're in a better position? The server was great, but would not come back purely based on a ridiculously priced eggs benedict, which, by the way, the eggs were over cooked and they were out of one of the main ingredients.
google avatar

Loren W.

Yelp
Solid breakfast with nice wait staff. It used to be a lot busier, but I've been seated immediately on two different weekend mornings recently.
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
A true Portland hidden gem! There's so much to love about this place. It has a local neighborhood vibe, unpretentious, not hipster, not overpriced -- just great quality super delicious food. They have a robust list of cocktails for a reasonable price of $9. Their breakfast old fashion was stiff and perfectly balanced. They even put 2 cherries instead of 1! The squash and brussel sprouts dish was surprisingly amazing. The waitress said that was her favorite dish and I'm so glad I went with her recommendation. The squash was cooked perfectly and the Parmesan cheese and runny egg brought the whole dish together in luscious harmony. The crab Benedict was a special for the day and there was a generous amount of crab with a thick and crispy hash brown on the side. I would definitely make the drive to come here again. I'm curious how crowded it gets during busy hours since the place is small, but there is a bar with plenty of seating to order drinks while you wait.
google avatar

Judy D.

Yelp
It is as advertised a neighborhood cafe in house made bread and English muffins perfect poached eggs for the Benny and a excellent Chile verde a happy competent staff
google avatar

Yuen L.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast and everyone enjoyed their breakfast. I like the farm to table , organic, local food concept. Their potatoes, rosti and pico de gallo was superb! In general, their portions were filling and the service was impeccable. Parking is limited though so best to walk or car pool -- friendlier for the environment anyway!

Russell H.

Yelp
Excellent choice for Sunday Brunch!! Great food and amazing service! It's always worth the wait.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Completely bland an unseasoned food. Pork belly managed to be dry despite being pork belly. I never send back food but for $25 for a breakfast, I expect it to be at least half as good as something anyone could make at home.
google avatar

Taylour V.

Yelp
This used to be a yumMa place to eat. Not anymore;(the food was cold, the coffee was undrinkable, the cocktail was not as it was described and the housemade English muffins were dense and heavy. Huge disappointment for my daughter's birthday brunch.
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Toast is one of our favorite breakfast and brunch spots in the SE. They make everything from scratch and they are damn good at it too. It is difficult to try everything on the menu because every time we come here we are craving one of the things we have had before and fell in love with. Luckily they change things up on the menu enough that eventually we are so intrigued by one of the items that we simply must try it. There can be a bit of a wait here on the weekends, but I assure you it is worth it. We are very lucky to only live about a mile away from here. Even if we didn't, this would still be very high up on our list of favorites. If you've never been here before you are simply missing out. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a breakfast you'll not soon forget!
