In Appreciation of A.1. Steak Sauce | Eater

"A tiny strip-mall diner in Glendale with dusty mini blinds, formica laminate tabletops, tan vinyl booths, a waist-high counter, and sassy waitresses, this classic American breakfast spot is where the author first encountered A1 sauce. It serves straightforward, no-frills favorites—ham-and-eggs as a go-to and steak-and-eggs as an occasional treat—and provided the ritual backdrop for the author’s father (a Korean-born, Brazilian-raised former coffee farmer who became a mortgage-banking executive) to eat weekly before Little League games. The memory of dipping half-inch griddled steak and sunny-side-up eggs into A1 captures the diner’s comforting, nostalgic appeal: unpretentious, familiar, and focused on simple breakfasts that turn ordinary meat into something vividly satisfying." - Matthew Kang

Great brunch place! We tried it out our first morning in town and went back every single morning of our trip to work through the menu because there was so much we wanted to try! Highly recommend the carnitas and eggs, although everything we had was excellent. The coffee was quite good too, and it's a bottomless cup. Peter was our server every morning and he was great, really went above and beyond. We ate exclusively on the patio and can say it's a great outdoor space, mostly covered and doesn't feel cramped at all. Wheelchair accessible.

The food here is great the portions are big sizes. You will get full. The waiters and waitress are very nice. They stop several times to check if we needed anything and to refill our cups. Wheelchair accessible, kid friendly. $ to $$

Friendly service. The corn pancakes were awesome. It was hard to eat the food in the back patio when it was cold. I was happy there were Mexican breakfast foods as well. We had the machaca. My friend had the Denver omelette and liked this.

Came here due to the great reviews. Was disappointed at the quality of the food. We ordered biscuits and gravy and the biscuits were so dry and the gravy was cold. All our food was served cold. We ordered carne asada Chile verde chilaquiles due to the recommendation of the waitress . The green sauce seemed to be canned and not fresh. The beans did not taste home made either. I would not recommend this place when it comes to breakfast. Not sure how the rest of the menu is . Customer service was very friendly

This place is very close to many car dealers. I need to wait 3 hours for my car to be serviced, so have a brunch here is perfect. So many choices on the menu. Very friendly and cozy place. The muffin is a bit hard and the hash brown a bit overdone. But overall a nice experience.

Absolutely love this restaurant, this is my go-to breakfast place in Glendale. The food is always amazing and the staff has been very welcoming every time I’ve been in. Can’t go wrong with any one of their omelets and I love that you can choose fresh fruit instead of potatoes for many of their breakfast dishes. Can get busy on the weekends, but they’ve got both indoor and outdoor areas and can accommodate quite a few people at a time. Reasonably priced, not the cheapest in town but not expensive either. Definitely recommend trying this place out.

Yelp
The Toasted Bun deserves your business. The food is solid, they have a giant patio in the back, and they are now open (some days) until 8. The only really diner left in central Glendale, it should be on your list of usual haunts. Pros: solid food, big menu (something for everyone!), big patio, comfy booths, lots of parking Cons: it can be a little dark, and they need to ditch the TV (why???)... they should take a page from Freds 62 Regardless, you can't go wrong at the Toasted Bun

Yelp
This is the second negative and last review I will post, because my husband and I will not be returning to the Toasted Bun. My husband and I have been enjoying Toasted Bun since it was located on California, before moving to Brand. We were pretty much pleased with the food and service. Until about 2 months ago we went in the am and there weren't a lot of people in the patio out back. We sat down and ordered some drinks and got them right away. There were 3 servers out there going back and forth and when ready to order, neither of the 3 servers came up to take our orders. They just kept walking past our table. We couldn't believe how many times they walked past us. We could've said something, but like I said, there were really no other customers, and really thought they would tend to us but no. We were regulars there and the staff knew us. We really enjoyed eating there, especially outside. We were really surprised, bummed and disappointed that they just ignored us like that. We were soooo disappointed, that we left a penny as a tip and walked out. Sorry, but that's just how we feel about lousy customer service.

Yelp
Food is good there dilevery is abismal so is the service recently ordered pancakes full stack no butter or Syrup in the order. Additionally we order eggs with hashbrown and bacon with toast. No toast came no butter no syrup. This is terrible I will never order from them ever again no attention to details.

Yelp
Hidden gem in Glendale! Family and I went in this morning for breakfast and it was delicious. There was a young woman and man both working and they were very pleasant. We will be going back again, maybe our new breakfast spot.

Yelp
What a gem! This neighborhood diner feels like I'm coming to my grandmother's house. People know each other. They have good conversation. The food is delicious and served withcare. Peter, my waiter, was gracious and kind. This is your neighborhood place!

Yelp
A great local diner in Glendale. There are multiple Toasted Bun locations around LA but I have only been to this Glendale location. It's a traditional retro-style diner so it's a great option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. My favorite diner meal is breakfast so we decided to stop in for our first time this Saturday morning for breakfast and had a great meal. There is medium-sized free parking lot attached next to the restaurant otherwise it will be street parking. Our server was very polite and all of our food items came out extremely fast. It was under 10 minutes after ordering that we got our food. Inside is quite large and divided into a few rows of booth seating. They have a fairly large menu so it was hard to choose what I wanted to order. I started with a coffee which I recommend because it's strong and tasty here. For my meal I chose the Chilaquiles Verdes with Carne Asada and thought it was honestly great. The Carne Asada was especially good and seasoned and the portion size was very healthy. We also ordered Eggs and Pancakes and the eggs were terrific as well as the pancakes. The food tastes great and the pricing is fair so I would suggest to anyone searching for a solid breakfast option in Glendale.

Yelp
Food and service was great. We sat outside because it was easy for my mother since she was on her walker/wheelchair. Food was very good. Will definitely come back again.

Yelp
so authentic, so good, quick and great service. would most definitely recommend. the food was more than enough and big portions.

Yelp
I was waiting for my car getting serviced by the Toyota dealership and looked for a place to grab some coffee. I looked at the reviews and saw "corn pancakes". I got intrigued and ordered it with eggs and bacon. The corn pancakes are a must! It does have a good flavor and bits of corn and delicious with the butter. The eggs and bacon were alright but the pancakes are the star of the show. The place did give diners vibes and I find the decor with cute pastel colors. Service was pretty attentive especially with the coffee refills, which kept flowing. I'd go back!

Jackie R.

Yelp
There is an older waitress who seems to hate her job. They don't wash their dishes thoroughly (my water glass had lipstick on the rim and my coffee mug had old dried-up coffee stains). Simple requests like asking for Tabasco went unfulfilled and we had to go inside to pay our bill because they weren't attentive to those sitting out in the patio.

Yelp
I stopped in this morning after dropping my car off at the Honda dealership down the street for some TLC. It's a couple of blocks away and must really enjoy a loyal following, or they wouldn't still have been around since 1963. Being the first one in a diner is a treat! Especially one that really harkens back to a simpler, more cozy time. The modest room is filled with plush booths all around and a nice long counter, as should be in a classic diner. Everything was neat and clean. I'd suggest some new flooring near the kitchen as it looks like some of the planks are going their own way. The waiter was kind and brought me a menu right away. And good thing, the place started to fill up quickly. The next couple in the door asked if they could sit on the patio, and at first the waiter said they were not doing the patio service this morning since he was all alone. But then he said that they could but asked them to please understand if service was a little slower out there as the main room was going to get busy. They agreed. The menu is large. Not Cheesecake Factory large, but certainly more than enough for all tastes, including a healthy selection of breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, and the like. I ordered a little bit of everything in a standard American breakfast. I had originally planned to just sit here waiting for my car service to be completed, so the massive order seemed to be the perfect accompaniment. Two eggs, two slices of bacon, a Belgian waffle, and breakfast potatoes. And, of course, a cup of coffee. Everything was really delicious! Seriously! Coffee and all. Every single bite was unique and perfectly prepared. The coffee was awesome. The potatoes are prepared with a little red bell pepper and onion, just like I would have done at home. And the waffle was sublime. If I had one request, I would have preferred real maple syrup. But that's me. I could tell by how the waiter was speaking with a number of customers that these were some of his regulars. If I lived in the area, I'd make this my haunt. I truly recommend Toasted Bun. There's too much here not to get your share of it. And I can't wait to go again and have company to share the experience. (available on Grubhub and DoorDash) Bon Appétit!

Yelp
I ordered a veggie omelet with coffee. About 8:30 am., there was one waiter and 5 different tables being served. Total waiting was about 25 minutes. Friendly service. Medium-dark lighting gave some ambiance to the small cafe.

Yelp
I came in on Friday morning and we were seated right away. I ordered chorizo egg plate and it was delicious. They have a kids menu with different options which was perfect for my daughter. The restaurant has comfortable booths and even has an outdoor patio. Service was great! Melanie was our service and she was nice and checked in on us all the time.

Yelp
Was waiting for an oil chance at the dealership next door so popped over for breakfast. Exactly what you want from a diner. The house made biscuit was great, hash browns were crispy.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I were in the area and needed a bite to eat. We'd never been here before, but quickly fell in love with the atmosphere. The vibe is chill, 50's diner style. The staff are welcoming and friendly. We split a chicken melt and it was delicious. The portion was big enough to easily satisfy both of us. The chicken breast was juicy, the cheese and ortega chili topped it off nicely. And the curly fries were crisp and perfect. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Quiet and chill cafe with outdoor and indoor seating available. Toasted Bun gives the "old school retro diner" vibes, which is great. Menu offers a lot of variety breakfast/brunch, lunch, and dinner items. We came here on a Sunday morning and there was plenty of seating available. Both the service and food were good. Your choice of eggs style, hash browns or breakfast potatoes, or fruit when ordering the breakfast combos. Food arrived 15 minutes after ordering, which was pretty fast considering we ordered 7 different items.
google avatar

Deana M.

Yelp
Great service and good diner-style food, but they don't offer gluten-free items despite what their menu says.

Yelp
What a delight! We got out of our Eagle Rock orbit and drove a whole 7 minutes to south Glendale and it was totally worth it. Service gets 6 stars. Yeah, six. We were greeted, seated and well taken care of by friendly staff the whole time. It was my favorite part of the experience. The decor is nice. I like the colors in here, sorta strawberry/chocolate ice cream panels on the walls and soft minty green booths. And I love that their row of little booths where you can get in on either side. And there's a cool-looking, (very Instagram-friendly) wallpapered room with a pink neon sign and beer taps off to the side. The menu is huge and diverse. Since I've only eaten here once, I can only speak for the breakfast sandwich. It was fantastic. It's your basic diner breakfast sandwich, no additional quirks or flourishes. The egg was perfectly cooked, big and fluffy. We'll definitely be back.

Tae J.

Yelp
Usually love this place but when I order through a food service the quality is so poor. Nobody wants burnt pancakes I'm so sorry it's unacceptable.

Michael T.

Yelp
There's no place I'd rather be on a Saturday morning. Great food. Great Staff. Great vibes. If you like authentic americana diners and tired of kitschy & overpriced places that plauge Los Angeles , this is the place for you.
google avatar

Norge Y.

Yelp
Went back for the menudo and mentioned how good it is when I paid. I was then told it's offered daily. Woo-hoo! Definitely looking forward to coming back during the week! It will be nice to experience the patio when the weather is warmer and drier too.
google avatar

Elena A.

Yelp
Awesome service, chill vibes, yummy eggs and bacon... Unacceptable biscuits. Really. Don't order the biscuits.

James C.

Yelp
Friendly, quick service large portion for the price iced coffee refills. Thank you for a great breakfast while I was getting my car serviced. The restaurant has the elegant look

Yelp
Diners are as familiar as the language we speak and comfortable we eat. Every American love American diners, including me. This might not the best Diner in Glendale, but baby boomers seeking the comfort & nostalgia of their youth. The family owned biz since 1962. Typical retro all-inclusive range of patrons; actors, streetcar motormen, milkmen, policemen, white wings, left wings, businessmen, probably hipster & counter culture - all these and more run elbows at its counter. ( don't worry narcissistic people won't show up. They are too dumb to stalkings and talk others behind the back in their tiny places. Only good vibe patrons here ) Service is slow as retro style. But hey, remember this is West coast. Chill ! My charming breakfast with Mr LA was delightful. We will stand by the right, the true, live, die for the red, white and blue. Happy 4th.

Yelp
I went here over the weekend to try their breakfast after hearing good reviews. We sat in the outdoor area and got their specials with coffee , amazing! Melanie helped us and was so nice! We ll be back for more.

James W.

Yelp
Dropped off our car at the dealership for service, walked to Toasted Bun, our "new" favorite restaurant in Glendale.... Ordered the carnitas and eggs breakfast plate and also ordered the zucchini bread. The carnitas and all the fixings were delicious, the carnitas is pull-apart tender and the green salsa and pico de gallo is spot on. The zucchini bread was very moist and delicious! Also loved the Lavazza coffee that they served. All in all another great meal! Great service too!

James H. L.

Yelp
Been hitting this place (and its predecessor in the same location pre-COVID) and have watched as their motivated team get better and better at service, food and restaurant style with every visit. The reason for existence level items here are their breakfast menu items like the fluffy corn pancakes, which are kind of like a corn bread Angel food cake, hard to master at home but perfected here; every combination of every American and/or Mexican breakfast item with abundant vegan options; and a dining experience without the boisterous atmosphere of the usual IHOP/Dennys brekkie mobs. Airy but patio umbrella shaded big open patio in back (dog friendly) and plenty of parking in the lot and unmetered street. Lunch and dinner e we come by on occasion, but breakfast is a standard yes for TTB these days.

Paul D.

Yelp
Having truck servied at Glendale Dodge. They recommend the toasted bun for breakfast. What a great surprise to find a great old fashion coffee shop. Service was courteous, food was served quickly with generous portions. I will definitely be back

Yelp
I did not catch the name of the guy that serves us but he's nice and polite specially to elderly customers. The food is okay as well as the place, its cozy. good ambiance when cold or raining.

Yelp
Ok let me break this one down cuz this one was hard to rate So here's my rating for a number of things Service: 5 stars Food: 4 stars Ambiance: 4 stars Let me explain Since I'm a stickler for service. I'll begin there The service here was amazing. They have a very warm and relatable welcome. When we walked in, they said "sit anywhere you like!" Which for me is always the best option! Throughout our time eating, they checked in on us regularly, refilling moms coffee in the process The one thing that I liked is that a number of their staff checked in on us and made us feel welcome. It wasn't just the waitress. It was a manager, a busser, and the waitress and another server. This place looked like a quality team Ambiance So the ambiance in my opinion was bland. It was basic I was surprised too because it seemed that each of the staff members had cool ass personalities and a unique presence about them. So I'm just curious how it didn't transfer over to the whole store On one hand the had a classic diner vibe with original/original-looking furniture. Which is cool I love the fact that they had so many tables as well as a bar It's a real classic look which I love so much They have a cool chalk/marker board for the menu specials and updates - which is a great touch! (They also have regular menus too) They had a cool TV playing something from TBS which is sets such a "home feel" Love it Buuuuuuut, my opinion is modernize it a little more Some retro pictures of movies, retro pictures of actors and actresses, and a little plant life ....anything to give it more personality The neon sign, tv and menu board are great starts to something bigger It would give this awesome diner and new face One that catches peoples eyes Anywho - The food! Ok so food is basic diner food I've only been here once and I'm definitely coming back But they had a few classics like country fried steak and buscuits and gravy which is a must at a diner haha So they have plenty of options and they are affordable I got the Mediterranean omelette and mom got country fried steak and eggs She got coffee I got tea Now the Mediterranean omelette was what I rate a 4 It's good But there wasn't enough feta cheese on or inside In my opinion I'd like some black olives too but that's just me being a picky ass But definitely get me on the cheese I need that The other reason why I give it a 4 is because it was safe Meaning there wasn't much personality Classic omelette with basic flavors - yes No seasoning Not bad but Not great no personality Soooo it was good. Buuuut the eggs were cooked perfect The country potatoes had a cool flavor profile They were very balanced and Smokey and cooked perfectly Still not seasoned with some type of salt but there were classic salt shakers on the table so we are ok Mom mom loved the country fried steak! The gravy was great. And I took some of that gravy and mixed it with the potatoes Needless to say, I was licking my lips and fingers clean from that mixture!!! The toast was good with the little packets of butter that they provide Easy to spread which is good Classic jelly's and creamers on the side which is plus Also when I ordered tea, they brought honey Which I used on my toast which was sooooooo damn good Again 4 because it was good Flavors were good But only 4 because of lack of personality Again that's just my opinion I definitely recommend this spot. I've marked it down as a favorite and plan to try and number of different things Might even change this rating to a 5 depending on how many dishes I can take down haha So

Yelp
Great place to catch breakfast or lunch while your waiting 5 HOURS to get a oil change at Star Ford. Basic Cafe fare. A little bonus: Star Ford will give you a $2 Toasted Bun coupon to use for your meal purchase. I guess that makes the 5 hour wait WAY worthwhile! Thanks Star!

Yelp
Retro diner style spot with bottomless coffee and delicious French toast! Came in looking for a hot breakfast whilst waiting on car maintenance down the street and I am so glad I did!! My food was fantastic as well as the service and ambiance! Very chill and cozy - great vibes! I got coffee and a French toast combo (my usual at diners). Portions are huge, over easy eggs were perfectly cooked, hash browns lightly toasted and tasty, and the French toast was flawless!! Very soft and creamy on the inside and lightly crisp on the outside - perfection! Coffee is good too. Menu is extensive and prices are wonderful! My server was attentive and friendly. The other patrons were chatting and laughing with some local cops and the server - overall just a cozy neighborhood vibe here - it was great! The location is convenient too - right in the middle of a bunch of car dealerships. Lots of street parking available and there's also a private lot in back I think. Now that the Alhambra Mazda closed down, I'll be over here anytime for maintenance and I'll definitely be eating here again!

Yelp
Chorizo was burned on the skillet. Been there once before and it was good. Disappointed today. Service is good and wifi is good, Today could have been an off day.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall. Went while they were in the middle of shooting a movie. So half the place was shut down. Food great! Service..... ummmmmmm had an older lady, Felt like I either wasn't being loud enough or she was ignoring me.... Coffee was lukewarm.. tea was great. Got red wet
google avatar

Raz M.

Yelp
I ordered their breakfast sandwich which originally comes on sourdough and subbed it for a biscuit. I was supposed to get a choice of meat in the sandwich. I was never asked. And when the sandwich came the biscuit was hard and stale almost as if it were microwaved. The sandwich came with ham.

Elena E.

Yelp
Do not try to go to the Toasted Bun Coffee on Brand Blvd in Glendale and think you will be seated comfortably Peter, the Manager, would rather lose you as a customer than try to accommodate. We were there this morning for breakfast, 4 people, including my pregnant daughter. After they instructed us to choose a table, they told us we could not be seated at a specific booth because it was meant for 5 or 6 people, we had no choice but to leave the place. Probably for the better, as I noticed on my way out that they had a B health rating.
google avatar

Yelp
Was in town for a family event and had a big family brunch here. Did not disappoint! Good, attentive, consistent service - our drinks were always full, orders were all correct and they took pics for us. Very friendly servers. We sat on the patio and had plenty of space and shade. Large patio area and nice setup. Service was timely and our large order came out quickly. Dishes were attractive and appealing. The food was excellent - large portions and good flavors. The menu was large and had a lot of options. Will return when back in the area and would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Jodie M.

Yelp
I was waiting for my car to get an oil change and haven't had breakfast yet so this place was the closest. Server was nice but honestly the food was not good at all. Pancakes were burnt on the bottom, the breakfast potatoes tasted super old and they were nasty additional charge. The sausage link were the smallest links i've ever seen. Eggs didn't taste like scrambled eggs. Wasn't pleased and it was $20. Will not be coming again unfortunately

Yelp
If you want to go back to a simpler era when diners were a part of the fabric of American cuisine, look no further. Right when you walk into the Toasted Bun, you are right in the 1970's. From the decor to the music and fare, the Toasted Bun is a time machine on Brand Blvd. The menu has a lot of items and sometimes I think too many items, but that's just me. We went around brunch and had a simple breakfast of French Toast and has browns. The food is on par...Nothing spectacular, but nothing bad either. That's why I love it! Mike was the waiter on a Sunny Sunday morning and although he was 3 days new, he did an excellent job! You can't teach people how to be friendly, that's something people are born with. Only thing I can suggest...Fly Door Ambiance: 9/10 Cleanliness: 9/10 Bathrooms: N/A - Didn't use it Food: 8/10 Service: 9/10 Value: 8/10 Will I Return? Yes...
google avatar

Yelp
I was meeting a friend for lunch who lives in Glendale, so I asked her what she recommended. She chose here. I ordered the Monte Cristo, but it was just weird. Who serves a Monte Cristo with thousand-island dressing?? Also, they had no raspberry jam, only strawberry, in little packets on the table. TB owners: the Monte Cristo sandwich is always served with raspberry jam and confectioners sugar on top. ALWAYS. Offer your ridiculous preparation as an option, but to not have those here is just wrong. All I could really taste was the fried-ness of something that is basically a flavor bomb in your mouth (well, it's supposed to be). I'm not really into the whole "diner" mystique, so this place just left me cold. I'm not sure what I should have ordered instead. From the other awful reviews, it sounds like whatever I chose would have been equally bad.
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
My wife and I had breakfast here today. She fried eggs, bacon, toast and fruit. I had the Jumbo Combo, which included two pancakes, two eggs, bacon, toast and hash browns. Everything was excellent!

Yelp
First time ever dining at The Toasted Bun. Wow we will definitely be back. The staff was willing to share the Customers favorites. Staff was friendly and the service was wonderful. The food is delicious and serving sides are more than enough. Give this place a chance like we did because you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Really nice staff, AMAZING burger. Sandwich was not as great as I hoped but the burger was truly excellent.

Yelp
Came here after visiting the Autry Western museum. They make my favorite sandwich! The Monte Christo! It was delicious and very generously filled!!! I also added a side salad that was fresh and a perfect side. The waitress there was so kind and accommodating. Constantly refilling our glasses! I will definitely come back here when i'm in the area!!!

Yelp
Love a diner! Popped in after dropping off my car for service a few blocks away. Love there's free parking and they have converted some of the space outside for dining al fresco. But it was overcast, so left the dog in the car as they didn't have a second server available for outside until after 9am... and we were early. What I love is the "weekend" menu was available. It's on the Chalkboard over the counter. I like to order things I would not make at home. So started sharing the chile relleno burrito. We added scrambled eggs and bacon to make it breakfasty. No beans or rice so we would have room for dessert.... THE RED VELVET WAFFLE.... oh yeah! The red velvet waffle was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It's served with whipped cream and a couple of sliced strawberries. I think in the theme of a red velvet cake, the side should be creamcheese butter that you can sweeten if you must. I don't think it's needed because there is a sprinkling of powdered sugar on the waffle... but a little side of butter and a small scoop of cream cheese would elevate this waffle. It was so good that it was gone before we could inquire if they even had cream cheese.... they probably do since there are some lox options... right? that would make sense. Anyway, big menu. Lots of options to choose from. Friendly service. Will be back again!

Yelp
My mom and I had breakfast here last weekend while my car was getting an oil change a few blocks away. Cute diner with standard diner vibes, attentive and friendly service. I had their biscuits and gravy, she had the 2+2+2 both with coffee. Perfect start to our morning!

Yelp
So disappointed. We came to enjoy some breakfast but unfortunately we had to leave. We sat down ordered and started drinking our beverages. Server came out and said we don't have eggs. . NO EGGS ?!?!? Wow. So we left and headed to Foxy's. I understand if you run out of something but it would have been nice to been informed before we started ordering and waited .

Yelp
The place's very well-located but they are dirty. The utensils they left on the table were dirty, tables, floors and all in this place was unpresentable for service food.
