Yelp
Having lived in California for many years, we were excited to hear about this healthful juice bar / toast type place opening up in Merriweather. We've visited the place three times now because we really wanted to like the place and support Merriweather district, but have been let down each time & very disappointed by our last visit especially.
1. Ambiance: not a ton of seats, but the rotation is fast and the general vibe is nice. It's bright, has outdoor seatings, and on a nice summer day, it just gives you a beachy vibe & good view of the Merriweather district.
2. Food: it's very mediocre. They don't hide the bread they are using, and I see they get their bread from Costo (or some store bought bread). Their butter lettuce also feels like the Costco version (yes I shop there often). Not that it's bad, my point is, food feels very much overpriced for something I can buy and make myself at home. If you're the type of person who doesn't enjoy cooking and rather pay money to eat out - there is nothing wrong with their toasts! It's my personal preference since I enjoy cooking.
Smoothie: I tried a blue mystique and it tastes VERY healthy. I didn't mind it, but my husband didn't like it at all. Overall, $9 felt very pricey for this too.
One thing I liked from the place is their Acai bowl. Acai bowl is actually really good - if I were to come back again to Toastique, it would be for this!
3. Service is REALLY what gets me every time and ultimately made me give them a 2 star vs 3. My husband had a birthday reward today and when he brought it, the cashier said "I don't know how to redeem this."......???? husband, perplexed, asked him "well, I have this reward. Do you want me to ask someone else instead?"
He still stood there, giving my husband a look as if we did something wrong.
That's when someone else (a manager?) came over, asked us what was wrong, and resolved a situation.
It's OK that you don't know everything, but standing there looking at us funny, not doing anything to help. Was NOT Okay.
I guess the theme of this review is: If you don't mind paying extra for "healthy" type of food (ingredients feel store bought, not from a local farm or anything), food is OK and the vibe is nice. Don't expect a great service here. Treat it like a fast food joint that makes healthful food!
