The 10 Best Coffee Shops in the World, Ranked

"Crowned the world’s best by The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops, this Sydney flagship in the Chippendale neighborhood pairs award-winning espresso (notably excellent flat whites) with an educational, transparent coffee experience. It fosters genuine barista–customer connections through features like an Island Brew Bar where guests can ask about the brewing process and a glass-walled roasting room that lets visitors watch beans being roasted. The company emphasizes high standards and local pride, and the recognition reflects a team effort to put Australian coffee on the world stage; the brand also operates outposts across Asia, the Middle East and throughout Australia." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. I’ve been here twice since they’ve been awarded world’s best coffee. I don’t know about world’s best but they definitely made best coffee’s as I tried multiple of them, the second time paired it with some food as well. Just be prepared for at least 30 mins wait times in Q’s especially over weekends. Overall, decent food and great coffee with convenience of table service including paying at the table itself, make it a lot easier. Request to the shop - Atmosphere, Staff service and everything were great but please make sure the water jugs and glasses are properly washed please. I wasn’t able to drink water out of the glass as it had pungent stink to it. I appreciate it’s always busy but just a note on this. Thanks!

Guess I had pretty high expectations fr this spot given that they were awarded the best in the world. However, the drinks were pretty average and didn’t give me the reaction that I expected from the first sip. Strong coffee though, will wake you up straight away. Friendly and helpful service.

Went there cause they are listed as the best coffee place in the world. Waited for like 10-15 mins . The waiter was really friendly and kindly seated us. Then there is one other lady showed us a menu and everything however we didn’t not feel welcome at all. The food was okay however the coffee is really smooth, i tried their special roast called “panna cotta”- this drink left me speechless. Had to buy a bag of this coffee bean home. So good. Overall they served excellent coffee, okay food and good service except that one lady.

It was my first time to this Toby's Estate but I am not fully convinced that I will make my way back here because of the experience I had. Please note my review is for the coffee & the cafe itself. We didnt consume food, so wont be able to comment on how it tastes. My experience, highlight and tips: - There are 2 queues. 1 for takeaway only and another for dine in. As the sign to differentiate the queues are at the front and may not be visible which is which, do ask the people in the queue so that you are in the right line. - Queued for nearly 25 mins before we were seated. During which the heater was on full heat mode even when the sun was shining on the queue spot. In the afternoons, the sun shines right onto the queue area. - The store can get rather busy and coffees can take a prolonged time to arrive after the order is placed. Took nearly 20 to 25 mins for pour over coffee and even longer for flat white. We waited for nearly 45 mins before our order of flat white arrived and almost done with the pour over coffee when it arrived. Turned out they had forgotten the flat white and only realised when we followed up a couple of times. - Pour over coffee tasted quite nice though do remember as it is black, it can be quite strong. The flat white was ok as there have been other cafes serving Toby Estate that I preferred more in terms of texture, flavour and strength. - The staff are generally good and friendly. As they get quite busy, they may not be as attentive. Kudos goes to them compensating for the flat white by giving it to us complimentary because of the forgotten coffee but they needed a reminder of what they committed to compensating. - There is the roasters at the back of the store and both sides of the store with their products for sale. Though this may be a flagship store, I will have to think hard of whether the queue and turnaround time to get my coffee is worth a return.

A friend of ours mentioned that this café had won an award and told us, “If you’re a bit of a coffee snob, you need to check this place out!” Naturally, we were curious — so we dropped by for a visit. It was pretty busy when we arrived, which is usually a good sign. Our friend had gotten there before us and was already in the queue. Not knowing how it worked, we initially lined up at the takeaway line. One of the staff kindly asked if we were just after coffee or if we were dining in. Once we explained that we were joining our friend (who was already in line) and planning to eat as well, they were super accommodating — took our order straight away and got us seated as soon as a table became available. Great customer service right from the start! Now, the food. We ordered the plain bagel, turkey bagel, and ham and cheese bagel. I highly recommend the turkey bagel — hands down the winner for me! It was so flavourful, with the perfect balance of fillings. The ham and cheese was also tasty and satisfying, but that turkey bagel absolutely stole the show. And of course… the coffee. Smooth, rich, and well-made — you can definitely tell they know their coffee here. It lived up to the hype and then some. All in all, it was a great little spot with friendly staff, good food, and excellent coffee. I can totally see why it’s popular and why they’ve received recognition. We’ll definitely be back — next time, I might just order two turkey bagels for myself! PS. The queue can be long, so prepare for a long wait if you're not in a hurry. Otherwise, do take away

Quite possibly the worst pancakes I’ve ever had, so dry, no flavour. Can tell they are pre made; and arrived barely warm. This is not the cafe to visit if you are wanting a nice meal, they don’t have a kitchen per say, just a microwave and a toaster in the middle of the cafe. The coffee was ok, nothing to be hyped about. I think the reason they won the award is because of the experience of seeing the barista make the coffee in front of you from all angles and see the care they take with each shot etc But other than that not worth visiting really; I traveled 40 mins and won’t be coming back. Lots of local cafes near me with better food and same quality coffee.

Visited at 10am Saturday, dine in, no waiting. Coffee is good, best of the world would be questionable. Enjoy the atmosphere, can see the big warehouse and how serious they were on single origin coffee though I did not try. Price wise is ok, food may be a bit excessive. A big menu to explore here if you live here then is something to look into further. For me, not my first choice for coffee in Sydney, can consider for breakfast.

🏆 Voted #1 cafe in the world. That's right, THE WORLD. 🌏 Three of the top 10 are in Australia and Toby's grabbed first. The coffee is good. If you go by even it's open, you'll see a queue. That's because they are comically ill-set up to manage takeaway orders and only seat like 10 people. Before they won the award, like, very few people went here 😂 So, if you're getting takeaway, you wait outside until they call you in. Then go stand awkwardly in the middle of the shop and order at a tablet and then they will tell you to go stand back outside. The coffee, tho, is good.
