Yelp
Let me start off by saying it takes a lot for me to write a negative review for a place. I'm a generally positive person, and I like to see the best in everything. So, it takes a truly bad experience for me to go out of my way share my negative thoughts on a place.
I went to college at Emory, so I lived right in the area. While I usually went to a different liquor store, there was one occasion where my friends and I were in a pinch, so we decided to try this place out. We stopped in, browsed a bit, but realizing they didn't have exactly what we were looking for (my friend was VERY picky), we decided to leave. As we were walking out, one of the store attendants ran out after us, and told us to stop. He said he had to check my bag "just to make sure." "Make sure of what?" I asked. No direct answer, just a "it'll be real quick" answer. "Can I please ask why you are checking my bag?" I asked. Again "It'll be real quick." After he rummaged through my purse, he handed it back to me, saying nothing else, and walked back into the store.
Needless to say, I felt incredibly violated. Now, while I am generally hesitant to play the race card, I cannot think of any other reason we would have been stopped, especially since I am also young. I am an African-American female, and was with an African-American male and an Asian male, and I truly feel this is the reason. I asked many other students if this had ever happened to them, and none said yes. They were all in the same age group. Some of them also did not purchase anything, and many were women, so they also had large purses. However, they were all Caucasian.
Unfortunately, I could not find any other minorities who had been here, so I cannot make a definitive statement as to the reason we were stopped. Maybe it was just one bad employee. Maybe we did something else to seem suspicious. But if that were true, he should have given me an answer when I asked.
I don't know what happened that day, but needless to say, I, nor none of my friends, ever went to this place again.
