On the Grid : J.Crew Liquor Store

"Not your usual J Crew. For starters, there's no pastel linen in sight. Instead, the walls are filled with bottles of liquor, antiquities and classics mixed in with staple brands like Aesop and Thomas Mason. A gentleman's abode, the store is in a landmark 1825 townhouse that retains its original wooden bar." - The Charles

If you feel overwhelmed by the unwieldy men’s sections in big department stores (or even big chain stores), Todd Snyder might be the solution. The Midwest-born designer honed his menswear skills at J.Crew - you’ve got him to thank for the Ludlow suit - and brought his midwestern sensibility to his own label in 2011. As GQ put it recently, Todd Snyder the brand has a “J.Crew-grows-up vibe” that is great for guys who are ready to upgrade the contents of their closet. The newly opened downtown store in Tribeca is a homecoming of sorts. Snyder was the man behind the Liquor Store, the OG #menswear destination, when it was fronted by J.Crew. It closed last spring and Snyder snatched it up. While you can find a larger selection of product and more of TS’s collaborations with other brands at the flagship store in Madison Square, the new Liquor Store is a smaller, more highly-curated experience. Insider tip: book an appointment through their website with a personal stylist ahead of time. It’s totally free, and they can pull items in your size they think you’ll like so you can cut right to the chase when you arrive.

I called in to the store and an associate confirmed over the phone that a specific product was in stock. When I arrived in person, the product wasn't in stock and the staff was initially rude. After this, the staff was reluctant to call another store and assist in finding the product elsewhere. Poor experience overall.

Welp it was a big waste of time coming here for a Timex watch! No I do not recommend this store. Small & sales people ready to bug you despite coming in for the watch itself. Tried to look around to at least make my visit worthwhile but staff were bored ready to leer and annoy!

Julian and his team assisted me with fitting and having alterations made for a tuxedo on relatively short notice — not only were they extremely courteous and receptive to my needs, but showed interest in me professionally, as a community member, and demonstrated a high level of sartorial judgement in making recommendations for the perfect fit. Beyond the excellent staffing, the storefront is in a beautiful and somewhat storied, old-world inspired armoire, arranged with Todd Snyder’s tastefully curated selection of upscale men’s wear.

When I lived in Tribeca, this location was a neighborhood bar called The Liquor Store, which let you drink there until way beyond 2am. Times have changed and it looks like a nice shop has opened in its place. I'm glad they kept the old sign out front. A great character for the neighborhood. I painted a portrait of this place in my series of 'Disappearing New York', which you can see on my website, kovalfineart dot com.

Julian and Alex were awesome. Not only were they extremely helpful, but their eye for style is unparalleled. Myself and my wardrobe thank you both.

The staff here is great! David went above and beyond to help me find an outfit for an event with an unusual dress code. I really felt like a valued customer.

ZERO respect for customer privacy. I had to ask multiple times for them to not send me marketing. And after asking them to completely delete me from their records in May, unwanted catalogs are showing up in my mailbox in September. Absolutely creepy. Well, they seem really good at permanently driving away the business of customers who otherwise might have continued to patronize them. If you care about your privacy, you might want to shop elsewhere as to the Todd Snyder company you are not a customer, you are a commodity.
