Toddy Shop - Review - Fitzroy - Melbourne - The Infatuation

"Toddy Shop is named after southern Indian street stalls serving the palm wine known as toddy, but here you’re more likely to drink a mango margarita. There are just 20 seats, and the cramped kitchen punches well above its weight. Nearly everything on the homestyle Kerala menu is primed for a swipe through with flakey parota bread: kadala (brown chickpea) curry with the punchy pop of mustard seeds, prawn moilee fragrant with coconut and curry leaf, and mackerel fish fry bright with kashmiri chili and black pepper. Shelves bordering the dining room hold lager by local brewer Two Rupees, decorative knick knacks and rice sacks, but the best place to settle in is at one of a few new pews on the pavement outside." - Ellen Fraser

Never have google reviews been more wrong. We literally ordered the entire menu and everything was so flavorful and well priced. Could not have loved this place more. Do not believe the rating.

Toddy Shop is an incredible place that offers a truly homely Kerala dining experience. The food is simple, comforting, and filled with perfect flavors and a masterful blend of spices. Their fish fry, in particular, took me back to the days when my friend's grandmother used to cook in Kerala—it’s that authentic! Having lived in Trivandrum for three years, I can confidently say this place brings back beautiful memories. Will visit again soon!

This was the best place I’ve been too while my experience in Melbourne. The wonderful bartender lieve was lovely as truly kept us joyful with her hospitality and presence. It was absolutely the best and you can’t forget about the lovely manager Zoe who kept the whole venue glowing and running. Everyone searching for a good recommendation check this place out. I’m absolutely In love.

I had a deeply disappointing experience at this so-called "home made/authentic Kerala restaurant." The food was far from authentic, starting with the prawn fry, which turned out to be extremely salty as it was made with dried prawns instead of fresh ones, a complete rip-off. The fish fry had a strange, off-putting taste, and the porotta was clearly frozen, not freshly made as one would expect. The toddy was the only redeeming factor, it was refreshing but imported from Sri Lanka. While decent, it doesn’t compare to the superior sweet toddy from Kerala, no matter what the waiters may claim (and no, this isn’t just bias, it’s a fact). Beef ularthiyathu/fry was alright but we got more potatoes (which is not an ingredient in traditional Kerala style beef ularthiyathu/Syrian beef fry) than the meat. Marketing this place as an authentic Kerala food experience is a travesty. Save your time and money.

Visited early on a Saturday with two friends. The food was incredibly delicious and flavourful in a way that none of us expected, and drinks surprisingly familiar and unique. Ordered the prawn, chicken, beef, and fish daily specials sides of Parota and rice for the gravy. Serving sizes were enough to leave us satisfied. Service was friendly, hospitable, and timely. Never felt rushed while always feeling attended to. The cosy venue size made it a great place to just hang out in as a small group. High quality casual dining with exceptional ingredients and attention to detail in the flavours.

Very small, cozy restaurant tucked away on a side street in Fitzroy. It's a 20 seater restaurant serving south Indian malyalee fare. Found bottled toddy (3% alcohol) here & it was quite tasty. Cocktails here are well received. The food menu has a simple & small offering. We ordered the beef, pork, chicken & okra. Preparation was authentic with the chicken stew being excellent as were the flaky parottas. Serving portions were rather small & each dish was an average of $25. Good, one time experience.

Well, not authentic Kerala food. It can be considered an overpriced Indian fine dine restaurant. Parota was heated frozen roti. Toddy was Sri Lankan (not Kerala or even India). Place has a good ambience but congested. Kitchen appears small, makes me wonder if the dishes are cooked there or just reheated and served. Had tried the toddy, beef , chicken and parota. Beef was ok, and the others were just normal, nothing exceptional/authentic for the price.
