Where to Eat in New Haven’s East Rock Neighborhood | Eater Boston

"TOKA serves dishes from across Southeast Asia with a focus on Indonesian specialties, like comforting buntut oxtail soup and fragrant dry curry beef rendang. Shadow boxes showcasing folk art adorn the intimate space and tropical cocktails complement the food menu." - Stasia Brewczynski

Google
Highly recommended!!! The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent. Even though it's 94 miles away from where I live, I go there 2 or 3 times a month to eat. The food is really delicious.

Natta A

Google
We drove by New Haven and stopped here for lunch. Their nasi goreng (Indonesian-style) fried rice was out-of-this-world delicious! Every rice was coated with wok flavor; it's sweet and savory and so satisfying. If you never had Indonesian cuisines before, start with this one at this restaurant. My partner ordered beef rendang. It was rich with warming spices and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The chicken satay (sate ayam) had a good char and great well-balanced peanut sauce. If you are feeling frisky, ask for the Indonesian-style sambal (sambal pedas) so that you'll know how spicy your life is meant to be.

Google
Their food is absolutely delicious. If you’re in this neighborhood, Toka Asian Kitchen is one of the Restaurants you should try. We ordered Hibachi Steak with vegetables, Chicken Katsu, Miso Soup, Hot & Sour Soup and Shrimp Shumai. It is worth eating there.

Daphne

Google
Stumbled upon this place while in the area and was not disappointed! First time having Indonesian food and it was so tasty. I ordered gyoza and Chicken Behoon Goreng which both were delicious. Had great conversation with the people working there. They were so grateful I came in which was sweet. Don't get turned away by the menu if you're expecting thai dishes. Ask for help and or suggestions before you walk away from Toka. Will be back!

Mohammad Faraz

Google
I ordered mee goreng which was delicious and Shrimp shumai was decent. They made it spicy as per our request. Food served here is halal. Atmosphere was good, not too crowded.

Google
Absolutely loved my experience here. The food was so good everything was perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. You can tell real care goes into the cooking. The service was just as impressive friendly, attentive, and made the whole meal feel even better. Definitely one of those spots you leave already thinking about coming back. Highly recommend.

Frederick Choo

Google
Tried mee goreng & satay chicken. I would say good for what you can get in US, but not what you can get in Asia. So, 4 stars.

Asad Shahzad

Google
food is valid. Vibes are immaculate. Staff is nice. Food is halal. What more do you want. There’s a pay to park parking lot right next to it. Like $1 an hour. Overall 12/10 this place is great and I highly recommend it if you are in the Yale/New Haven CT Area. Whether you are a Muslim family or friend group this place has to be one of the best halal Asian fusion spots in New England.

Yelp
Fantastic Indonesian/Malaysian cuisine, can't wait to have their food again soon! Beef Rendang, I keep thinking about...

Yelp
This was our first time here, and it did not disappoint. Service was friendly and ambience at the restaurant was great. Waitress confirmed that all meat is halal. We started with the wok charred edamame and Toka chicken wings. Both were great; would definitely order the chicken wings again. For entrees, we had the beef mee goreng (egg noodles) and toka ayem goreng (not pictured). Portion sizes were generous and dishes were flavorful. Only critique is that the menu was vague and we did not know the chicken dish was not boneless. Overall great experience and will visit again soon.

Yelp
We were very excited to try this place because of the Indonesian food options on the menu. We had the tempeh, bihun goreng and ayam goreng. And finished up with the pisang goreng! Everything was excellent - really true to Indonesian taste and flavors. We plan to try the rendang next time. And once winter hits, the sop buntut. We did not order anything from the menu that was non-Indonesian so can't say how the overall experience is - but highly recommended for those pining for Indonesian cuisine. Excellent service as well and a very pleasant modern interior.

Yelp
Super yummy. Went here with my family and we got edamame, hibachi steak, and two servings of the mee noodles with beef (pictured) and chicken. Small interior but cozy, service may be a little slow but it was worth it for the delicious food!
google avatar

Yelp
Very friendly staff and knowledgeable! Loved seeing a halal Indonesian spot. We loves the drinks we tried at this spot a strawberry daiquiri mocktails and Pina colada so tasty! The butter chicken was sweet and tasty and the noodles were delicious. We also tried the rock shrimp which was a fried shrimp with a spicy sauce. The chef and the waitress was very nice and helpful

Yelp
The intentions are good, but the beef rendang that gets raves from newly minted Yelpers is disappointing. TOKA aims to bring Manhattan chic here with its Indonesian food. Despite the menu's divisions between starters and other dishes, it's essentially all "small plates," so your best bet is to go as a party of four and share 9 or 10 items. Dwell on the appetizer menu, where the choices are many. The fried shrimp are very nicely fried shrimp. The other reason to order for the table is that the kitchen is apparently still in takeout mode, so mains and starters arrive together. I dug right into my beef rendang when it was served -- and was surprised to find it lukewarm. The price for four bite-sized pieces of meat and two potato chunks, accompanied by nice-looking rice, is definitely Manhattan-style. The flavor was, sadly, not on the level of the place I used to go on the UWS. Service is pleasant and well-meaning. Make a reservation or call before you go, as the restaurant is small and the lunch hours posted are not accurate.

Yelp
Toka is a newer joint on State street. I have ordered here only about 5 times at this point, but the people there are always super nice and small-family-like (or maybe is a small family lol). The food has been spectacular. I love their Oxtail soup especially. And while I'm not always a well-cultured man, I'd like to believe my own oxtail soup is pretty good too, probably made it 100 times. And if we go to a restaurant someone around the world, I'm ordering it. That's probably another 20. That's like 120 data points lol Anyways, my point is: Don't listen to that other person's garbage review about comparing this place to similar joints in NYC. Lived there and even SE asia for few months. Comparisons like that are meaningless. We should be lucky to have such a specific and delicious cuisine genre right here in NHV. In addition to the oxtail soup, all the other stuff I've gotten here has been good to. tl;dr: Sometimes after a hard week of work, you just gotta take some time to yourself and toka...! This is the right joint for that occasion.

Yelp
The food was amazing, the server was super nice and their restaurant is really cute and quiet!

Yelp
Recently had dinner here. The waitstaff is very friendly and ranging. For appetizers we had chicken satay (not pictured), charred edamame and the fried sweet potato. We were VERY surprised when the sweet potato fries from any common grocery store came out. The chicken satay was delicious and the edamame was good but nothing special. For the main course we both had the spicy butter chicken. As I am more familiar with Indian butter chicken, I was surprised about the look of the chicken; however, it was very good and something I would order again. The Thai Iced Tea was DELICIOUS!!

Snehal A.

Yelp
Pretty place. Great ambience. They serve Indonesian food. Such a rare gem. Don't forget to try their tempeh- you will love it!!

Yelp
Food was very tasty and small restaurant was pretty and comfy even on a cold day. Staff friendly.

Yelp
My turn to pick the dinner restaurant nd I think I did a great job. Very nice small quaint restaurant with amazing flavors from this place. The butter chicken was very good, spiced right and the side was different so we asked and it was a pickled cucumber, carrot and pineapple medley which was very good. Very flavorful meal and great friendly service. Definitely going back !!

Natalie I.

Yelp
Food was very delicious. I asked for something spicy and the heat was kicking but also tasty. The staff was also very kind and attentive. Would definetly go back again.

Yelp
Really authentic Asian and Indonesian cuisine here right on state street in New Haven! This spot is very tiny and great for a nice date night. Smooth jazz filled the room as we sat down and ordered some hot sake. The service was incredible and super friendly. My dad and I got the fried goyza, chicken curry, ox tail soup and beef rendang. Everything was perfect and full of flavor you would expect to find in Asia. I think my favorite was the curry but it's so hard to say. I can't wait to come back! There is parking right being the restaurant too if you can't find parking on the street.

Yelp
Great little mom and pop restaurant serving a wide array of Asian dishes with a focus on Indonesian cuisine. The owners are really friendly and from Indonesia, bringing authentic flavors to New Haven. I ordered a tempe goreng, beef rendang and finished with a pisano goreng for dessert. The tempe was well cooked with a tasty spicy soy sauce to go with it. The beef was really tender, flavorful with spices and complemented by the soft but not mushy potatoes and crunchy pickled root veggies. I do wish that the beef was not in a huge chunk but broken into smaller ones to soak up the sauce better. Finally, the pisano goreng was a great way to end the meal with some ice cream and fried banana with chocolate sprinkles. Food: 4.5/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Serve: 5/5Beef RendangPisang Goreng

Yelp
Had a great dinner at Toka tonight. Food was delicious and we were very well taken care of by Maria. Am highly looking forward to coming back again soon!!

Yelp
Love this place! Friendly staff! Oooh the food is like coming home to a home cooked meal! That first bite I am transported to Indonesia...delicious, savory and oh so yummy! Beef Satay, Rendang, Bakso...

Yelp
Had a good experience at this small place on State Street New Haven. Food and service was terrific last Sunday for a birthday gathering.

Yelp
When I tried Tom yum soup here remind me was in Thailand this is very very good as in Thailand, I had rice noodles and shrimp salad omg I can't say anything very tasty and Chef Omar is a great chef this is the one spot highly recommend in new haven
google avatar

Yelp
The service and ambiance here are fantastic. Personally, however, food quality is more important to me than either of those, and it was fairly average for an Asian fusion restaurant. We had spring rolls, miso soup, shrimp avocado salad, fried sweet potatoes, and tempe goreng. Of these, the spring rolls were the best as they had some unique delicious spicing I haven't tasted in spring rolls before. Everything else was similar in taste and quality to a run-of-the-mill Chinese-American restaurant. I was hoping for more.

Yelp
The food is delicious! Everything was fresh and soooo flavorful! This is a hidden gem!

Nandan P.

Yelp
Definitely recommend this excellent Indonesian restaurant. The food is very flavorful and large portions. The people working there are super nice and will make you feel like family. Specifically recommend the Mee Goreng. Will be back soon :)

Cynthia S.

Yelp
Stopped in late Friday afternoon for an early dinner and loved every bite of my garlic chicken and broccoli. My friend gave the shrimp avocado salad and miso soup rave reviews. The dining area was spacious and modern. This was my first visit but it won't be my last.

Yelp
This new spot in New Haven is so so good! Really delicious food (we got the chicken mee goreng, the ayam goreng and for dessert the pisang goreng) and a nice ambiance that is casual but still classy. It's currently BYOB as they wait for their liquor license to come in. The menu seems to have Southeast Asian leanings but also has dishes like takoyaki and hibachi which we didn't try so I can't speak to those. Our service was great and you could tell everyone in the restaurant was happy with their food and having a good time. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Katherine A.

Yelp
A super cute restaurant with a great atmosphere. The staff is always extremely friendly and the food is great - the Beef Mee Goreng in particular is amazing. This place is definitely an underground hit; my friends and I are just enjoying the open tables before everyone in New Hacen catches on and it becomes impossible to get a table!
google avatar

Dimitri C.

Yelp
Just OK, pricy for what you receive: Mee Goreng (shrimp lo mein), Nasi Goreng (chicken fried rice). Both were simply generic. Beef Rendang (stewed beef with spices) was dry and a tiny portion for the price charged. Not sure I would give it a 2nd chance.

P G.

Yelp
This is probably one of the worst asian restaurants I've had food from. The tempura had a grainy mouth feel and the broccoli tasted bad. The shrimp was mushy. The beef used in the broccoli beef was of poor quality and the sauce was watery. The Gyoza dumplings were ice cold as if they'd been frozen and weren't re-heated properly. I can do that at home. In fact, my asian cooking at home is by far superior to what's served here. Not sure how it rated so many stars. I'd give it a miss.

Yelp
I came here because of the great reviews and I found out everything was true, This is a new restaurant and the food was so tasty especially the "Beef Rendang" was so delicious, it's like my hometown cooking! The staffs are super friendly and helpful! Love this place. If you are Asian food lover, definitely try this place and I will definitely come back here again!

Yelp
We had a delightful meal at this charming, impeccably clean, pan-Asian restaurant. Golden calamari and chicken wings (Asian style with an amazing sauce) were both outstanding. The sauce served with the wings was so good that my wife told them they should sell it by the quart. Beef hibachi was also outstanding. Quick attentive service by very friendly people. Glad we came. We will be back!

AnneMarie M.

Yelp
Got the broccoli appetizer and the eggplant/tofu dinner. Both were absolutely delicious. Food took some time to arrive, but it was worth the wait. Setting is elegant and music is calm. A welcome respite from the rowdy places State street offers. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Very good Asian food and people that work here are so nice .I enjoy my experience here tho

Stephanie G.

Yelp
So good ! Everything here is fresh and delicious. The prices are really good too. Inside atmosphere and cute. Hidden gem!

D L.

Yelp
Saw they recently opened and decided on a whim to eat here. So glad we did! Just spent an amazing few hours here because we couldn't stop ordering more delicious food! They have a wide variety of pan-Asian options but they're really Indonesian so we primarily stuck with those items. Everything was fantastic but I particularly loved the oxtail soup. So much so I ordered another one to go when we left. My friend especially loved the rock shrimp and their margarita (still waiting on liquor license but still really good!). Chicken Satay and beef rendang were also good. At this point we were already stuffed, but we "accidentally" ordered two desserts and both were excellent. Both are classic Indonesian desserts. Pisang Goreng is a fried banana with condensed milk, chocolate, ice cream, and (if you're not familiar with Indonesian/SE Asian food) the surprising addition of cheese. But if you like that touch of salty in your dessert instead of just cloying sweetness, it's perfect. The es buah is ice with sweetened milk and assorted fruits, something popular throughout SE Asia. Their version was perfect for a hot summer day. Service was extremely friendly. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
We stopped in here on a whim, and what a treat!! Excellent Indonesian food experience. It was a bit late when we were in there, and the kitchen patiently put together a very wonderful collection of appetizers and fried rice without any hesitation. The shrimp and chicken were some of the best we have had in New Haven...their breading game is on point!! While the food was wonderful (and great value), the best part was definitely the friendliness and kindness of the staff. My partner and I cannot wait to go back! Our new State Street favorite! Terima kasih!!

Shelby H.

Yelp
Incredibly friendly staff and delicious food! I love the curry, fried rice, and dumplings.

Han R.

Yelp
Excellent vegetarian laksa, wonderful service, and reasonable prices. Highly recommend.

Ed L.

Yelp
Flavorless and bland. Super overpriced. Slow service despite our group of three being the only ones present. Had the beef rendang and it was underwhelming and overcooked. Scallion pancake is $10! That's astronomically priced! For a flat thing of dough and a little bit of sauce?! Never setting foot in the place again.

Claire S.

Yelp
I really hope this place makes it. Everything I've tried from there has been quite good. Recommend the beef rendang, and the behoon goreng. Lightly spiced for the white person palate (mine), but I'm sure you could get it kicked up on request. Hood portions at a reasonable price and very friendly staff.

Haley P.

Yelp
Two friends and I went to Toka Asian Kitchen tonight. We really enjoyed to food and had a great time. We felt very attended to. We particularly enjoyed the Golden calamari, the spring rolls, and the Chinese broccoli. Thank you, Toka Asian Kitchen. Looking forward to when they obtain their liquor license.

Fionna F.

Yelp
So happy to find an Indonesian place in New Haven! Being an Indonesian myself, I can confirm the dishes are authentic and delicious. I'm so proud that this restaurant and the family behind it are repping Indonesian cuisine in NH. It's about time!! My favorite dishes are the rendang, nasi goreng, and mie goreng. When available on the menu, their soto betawi is incredible. My only gripe is that I wish they have MORE Indonesian dishes on their menu.. but then again if they have nasi padang and ketoprak I may end up eating there every day.. ya oke lah..

Paul N.

Yelp
Everyone was super friendly and helpful. We had the beef rendang, toka fried chicken, and teriyaki chicken. Everything tasted great, but we didn't have any leftovers. We will definitely be going back.

Bryan A.

Yelp
This is the best Asian food I have an in a really long time! The staff was very courteous, the atmosphere relaxed, and most importantly the variety of dishes and flavours were exemplary. I will definitely be coming back with my family.

Mashyat A.

Yelp
Toka easily became one of my favorite spots. Came here with a large group of friends and got excellent service. The food was also amazing. Our favorites were the Rendang and the rock shrimp. What you must try though is the oxtail soup. Good spot for a date night too

Crystal M.

Yelp
Small neighborhood restaurant with an extremely friendly staff! A clean and inviting atmosphere. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the Chinese Broccoli, Golden Calamari and Chicken Karagee appetizers as well as the Toka Chicken Curry. We highly recommend adding TOKA to your places to frequent!

Rania S.

Yelp
We ordered different meals and shared. Everything was delicious. I had the Gado gado salad and it was yummy. I would definitely come back.

Natalia K.

Yelp
Me and my group of 5 strolled in at 10:30pm and they still seated us. I felt so bad coming in late with my large group but our server was so kind to us. I was deciding between the most popular dish they serve which is the beef rendang, but I ended up getting their "sop buntut". It was absolutely amazing and rich in flavor. I also had the pisang goring for dessert and it was DELICIOUSSSS!!! Will be back. Thank you TOKA!

Patrick S.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere of this place! Great staff super friendly and great food! Highly recommend people to try and support this new up and coming place!

Jeenah J.

Yelp
Pickup ordered canceled last minute by the restaurant. Unprofessional and rude over the phone when tried to reorder. Would not recommend.

Steven S.

Yelp
Easy to miss on State St, but definitely happy we gave it a shot. Highly recommend the TOKA wings - crispy and very flavorful.
