Tokkia - Review - Covent Garden - London - The Infatuation

"Tokkia is proof that queues don’t have to be stressful. There’s almost always a long one snaking down the Covent Garden pavement, but a strict “only-orderers-inside” rule keeps the tiny cafe calm, quiet, and oddly meditative. While everyone else waits outside, inside feels like a matcha monastery. The menu sticks to matcha and hojicha drinks, all made slowly and deliberately, no rushing, no blender theatrics. The regular iced matcha latte with a touch of agave is clean and balanced, while the peanut hojicha is salty and pleasantly earthy. You can also buy bags of matcha powder to make at home, and salt bread if you get there early enough." - Rianne Shlebak

The social media buzz for this place was quite extreme and I can see why. What looks like a showroom whilst you wait for them to whisk up your drink and enjoy the final product being mixed into the milk is rather satisfying and enjoyable. Whilst I enjoyed the service and my drink, I wasn’t satisfied with their salt bread. I ordered their signature persimmon matcha latte which was rather lovely and enjoyed the persimmon syrup as it reminds me of childhood. Matcha could have done better with more whisking to froth it up a little more, but the taste was still prominent. Not the best, but it passes. I was expecting a slight crispy outside and some softness to my salt bread, but it was a bit hard to bite and chew into. Perhaps I came at a later time when the bread wasn’t as fresh, but I can’t deny that I left a bit disappointed. Though, I do credit their generous hojicha cream filling, that was delish. I would give this place another chance and come back earlier in the day. I appreciate the organisation of their system and the professionalism of their staff. They are warm and welcoming, they can clearly see that we do love to film the whisking process lol.

The service was excellent and very friendly. The interior is beautiful, but be prepared for a line and no eat-in. I loved the hojicha latte, it was delicious. The setting is quite charming, with a separate counter where they make the drinks right in front of you. I also tried the matcha salt bread, and I like that the filling wasn't too sweet, which was just right.

UPDATE : 16Dec , this is my 4-6 times that I am visiting this place and I am loving it!!! And I can’t wait to see how their dish wears looks like for eat-in !!! I visited the café on its opening day. The establishment is well-organised, with three tables dedicated to matcha preparation. I ordered a Persimmon Cinnamon Matcha And it was really an original combination that I have never tried before. The matcha is of exceptional quality and authenticity. The staff were exceptionally friendly, and the line management was 10/10 on the first day. 🫖

Great service very patient. Lovely nutty and creamy matcha 🍵 the salty butter rolls were delicious and great range of flavours too. I will definitely be back to try other matcha flavours and hojicha too !!

Visited on weekday 11:30, there is only few people waiting at the door as each drink is made in front of you so have to wait till the previous group of people having their drinks done before they invite next to get in. Staff is very friendly and welcoming, being in a wheelchair there is a small step to get into the store, love the experience of watching creating of the drink. Managed to have the persimmon cinnamon iced matcha, matcha and hojicha salt bread as well which is amazing loving the cream inside.

Small place with a few seats along the window inside and outside. The drinks are made in front of you, matcha and hojicha powder measured accurately with scales and hand whisked. The staff were also friendly and efficient. I tried the persimmon matcha latte with oat and it was nice, but personally a little too sweet for me. The persimmon flavour was nice, but I felt it overwhelmed the matcha flavour. If you are a matcha purist, I don’t recommend this drink. The drink was also rather pricey for the amount you get. I’d go back to try the other drinks and the salt bread next time.

I feel like I’ve finally found one of the best matcha places in London. Their signature persimmon matcha is really well balanced — not too sweet, and the persimmon works beautifully with the matcha. I also tried the hojicha salt bread and absolutely loved it. Definitely worth trying!! + They also have a great selection of products, and I’ll definitely be buying some for Christmas gifts🎄

I had the matcha latte and my friend had the persimmon matcha latte and both were 10/10 so good! Also the salt bread is so soft and buttery.
