New San Antonio Restaurant Tokyo Cowboy Is Opening With Texan-Japanese Menu | Eater Austin

"Opening April 29 along the San Antonio River Walk, this self-described Japanese-whisky diner blends Texas and Japanese influences with a menu that ranges from brisket egg rolls with pickled collard and hot chicken chile dumplings to dashi corn waffles topped with shrimp and pork belly, crispy pork chops in an apple-curry gravy, and sushi handrolls filled with shrimp aguachile verde. The cocktail list leans on Japanese whisky and inventive flavors — a togarashi-smoked Manhattan with Chinese five-spice bitters, a boozy Thai tea made with Japanese whisky, yuzu margaritas with matcha salt, a pandan-and-oat-milk Grasshopper-style drink, Toki highballs, plus wine and Japanese beers. A collaboration between restaurateurs Ben Cachila (formerly Uchi’s development director and owner of Old Thousand) and Chris Hill (owner of Esquire Tavern and Hugman’s Oasis and an architect), the space will feature lots of brass, wood banquettes, and prominent bar displays. Initial hours will be Sunday–Thursday 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday–Saturday 4 p.m. to midnight." - H. Drew Blackburn

Wow! Such incredible food. The flavors of everything are very special. The quality is great. The ambience of the place is super trendy and has a nice vibe. The service was really excellent. We had Isa serve us and he was amazing! We went here with friends and we can’t wait to come again!

I was really craving Asian food. There aren't many options near the Riverwalk. However, I stumbled upon this joint right off the Riverwalk. I am a sucker for Asian fusion food! I went during Happy Hour. The only thing I ordered from the Happy Hour menu was the chicken karaage. It was delicious! The portion is very generous. Each piece of chicken is pretty big. Perfectly fried, but slightly lacking seasoning/flavor on its own, so the kewpie dipping sauce was a great touch. My favorite dish here is the shredded vegetable salad. The vinaigrette they use on it was FANTASTIC! Seriously, it was so much better than what I expected, but everything I had hoped for. Very similar to Vietnamese goi salad. The shrimps are a nice add on at an additional cost. The green beans were yum and healthy. The Krab roll with the crab ponzu butter was really good, especially that crab ponzu butter. I've never tasted anything like it! I started dipping all my food in that butter. The only thing that I didn't really like were the chicken dumplings. The dumpling paper is way too thick for such a small amount of meat in each of them. Overall, I enjoyed the food. My server was kind. The food came out all nice, hot and fresh. The vibe of this restaurant is modern/chic. The booth chairs were not that comfy; I sunk quite deep into them which made the table a bit too high at that point.

A friend told us to try Tokyo Cowboy while we were in town. They said they had a great Happy Hour and a fun atmosphere. The drinks were great and the fried chicken and shishito pepper were great together. Save room for dessert because the Yuzu meringue pie is AMAZING. We will definitely be back. Our waiter Cody was so attentive and helpful in guiding us through the menu.

Google
Food was good, portions on the smaller side. Cocktails were great! I enjoyed the vodka house cocktail with jalapeno. The pork belly was really good. The blistered greens and karaage were good. The bites of the “Mac n cheese” that had the kimchi was so good, but the ratio was off and the remainder rice cakes didn’t have much flavor. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal here!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Tokyo Cowboy, and it was an absolute delight! The fusion of flavors was impeccable, and the ambiance was both cozy and vibrant. The standout dish was the chicken karage, which was fresh, flavorful, and creatively crafted. The staff were friendly and attentive, making the overall experience memorable. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a unique and delicious meal!

Google
Cody was an absolutely fantastic server full of knowledge of the food and the cocktails. He recommended a cocktail and it was one of the best I’ve had in a while. We have lived in Japan for three years and this kinda took me back to what I consider my home. We will be back.

Google
The food was decent. Service was good. Seems like they’re taking cost cutting a little too far. I’ve never seen shrimp cut in half to make it look like you get more shrimp. Also the menu says brisket egg rolls (plural) but you just get one that’s been cut in half. Probably wouldn’t come back.

First time for us I’ve been trying to go for quite some time and decided to make a reservation for a Saturday date night. Food was very good but portions are small, cocktails were good. Host team was attentive and professional they were able to get us seated even when we showed up about 20 minutes early. Service on the other hand was inattentive and rude, they seemed upset when we were not ready to order and maybe asked too many questions about the cocktails, I guess we were too needy and they were unable to provide a two course dinner for us. They just dropped the food whenever the kitchen sent it. And of course I got educated by the server when I sent back the salmon because it was brought to the table at same time as the brisket roll I mean, the idea behind ordering a starter first and then two entrees was to get the starter first and then get the entrees. We were told that they didn’t operate like that and that the way they do things is they just bring the food whenever the kitchen sends it. I’ve been working in the restaurant industry for over 30 years ant it is the first time I hear something like that in a full service restaurant. I don’t like to give negative reviews I know how hard the industry is but the way we were treated is just not acceptable. At no point did a supervisor walk the patio let alone touched our table and asked us about our experience even when we were there probably for about an hour and a half.

Yelp
Cody was awesome-- great food recommendations and efficient service. 5 stars for his service, the food and the ambiance.

Yelp
Tokyo Cowboy is a Japanese whisky bar & tapas style restaurant located off the River Walk. Downtown Parking (ie have a plan since there's nothing readily available). The ambiance inside is true to the name of the place - a modern take of a saloon and with elements blending the Wild West and modern eclectic. The dim lighting is perfect for a date night. The food was spectacular - we ordered 5 dishes and ranking them from best to least best: Pickled Cabbage - get this - if you liked pickled foods, this will make your meal so much better. Green Beans - perfectly stir fried, with a unique little sweetness added in that I'm not used to having in stir fried green beans. Gulf Shrimp and Noodles - perfectly balanced glass noodles seasoned lightly with soy sauce and heaps of green onions. A good base for the tapas experience to mellow out other stronger flavors Dashi Waffles - an interesting but very heavy dish mixing shrimp, pork belly, waffles, and what I believe is a potent teriyaki dressing. I can see what they're going for here but it's a very busy dish that can be very strong on flavors. Brisket Bao Buns - I think the Bao makes or breaks the game and these were firmer and cooler than I would have liked - I'm so used to the warm steaming bao that come with Peking duck that this one really felt disappointing. The brisket also fell a bit flat - maybe more garlic to umami it up? Service was top notch - they were attentive and helpful, and the small touches of clearing out dishes once finished help really keep the pace and vibes in a good spot. Our waiter recommended the cheeseburger next time and I'm confident we'll be back.

Yelp
This is a very unusual fusion restaurant...Southern American and Japanese fusion! This I HAD to try. True to its concept, the restaurant had an unusual fusion decor...with its rustic American-style tables and chairs, yet with a very Japanese-style lamps-lanterns. It also had an unusual, long layout...one side for group and paired diners, and the other for single diners (or possibly groups as well)? Very much like the Japanese ramen joints. Honestly, I didn't find this ambiance too comfortable, but it was very different. The foods were incredibly different as well. We ordered several small plates to share: Short Rib Bao Buns, Crispy Karaage Chicken, Hot Chicken Chili Dumplings, Mac & Cheese...then one of their desserts, Yuzu-Meringue Pie. For drinks, my husband had Michelob Ultra, and I tried Cobra Kai. We both agreed that the Dumplings and the Karaage Chicken tasted the best. Everything else was at the very least very interesting! I actually loved the Bao Buns...though it was very unusual tasting, due to its extra-strong, extra-sweet radish. Surprisingly, the Mac & Cheese was THE most unusual...a somewhat melted form of Mac & Cheese with a generous topping of Kimchi. We weren't too sold on the taste, but we had to agree that it was very interesting. The dessert was good, but a bit thicker than I would have preferred. I think I actually loved the drink, Cobra Kai more than anything. Not only strong, it was absolutely DEE-Lish! It was this Japanese Whiskey, with an unusual mix of Ube flavor, with Pineapple and Coconut. SO good!! Overall, we were impressed with all that they had to offer. Again, everything we tried tasted good...but more than that, everything was so uniquely fusion. No regrets choosing to try this place! I, for one, am definitely up for returning on our future trip.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The place is really nice--just remember it's downtown, so finding parking is part of the deal. The wife and I started with cocktails. I had the "Lords of Death" bourbon drink, which was stronger than expected (pleasant surprise). She had a mocktail, and both were excellent. For entrées, I went with the burger while she tried the shrimp & noodle salad, plus a brisket egg roll (yes, singular --good size but still just one) and fries. My burger was fantastic: charred perfectly and served with an egg yolk/soy sauce dip. Honestly, the burger was so good it didn't need it. Her salad was just okay--the shrimp was cooked perfectly, but the noodles were dry and rubbery. On the bright side, the fries and egg roll were both excellent and definitely worth ordering again. Prices are what you'd expect for a nice Riverwalk spot. Not Whataburger cheap, but fair for downtown San Antonio. The atmosphere is comfortable and stylish with cozy bar seating right inside the door and outdoor seating available too. Customer service was top-notch--our server, Reanne, was attentive, and the staff overall seemed friendly and professional. The location is great--clean, walkable, and close to other restaurants, bars, and attractions on the Riverwalk. Overall: Solid lunch experience, good cocktails, and great service. I'll definitely be back to check out the dinner menu.

Yelp
Monday night, they are packed! We went down stairs to the tiki bar while we waited for our table. The food was delicious and the service was spectacular! Shout out to Kevin for such great service! The ambiance was lively and on the louder side, definitely worth checking out

Yelp
Service was really good. I wish I knew the staff's name so I could call them out! I stopped by for lunch and was really hoping for something good. Unfortunately, the first dish I ordered did not come out too well. It was the Prawns with noodle salad. The experience of it was like a left over rice noodles dish that was in the refrigerator for a few days and then dunked into an ice bath before being served. My server saw how untouched my plate was and offered something else. I really didn't know what to order and left it up to them to decide for me. A few minutes later a karaage with rice and pickles veggies came out and it was very tasty. I really appreciated the fast acknowledgement from the server that something wasn't right and the cast willingness to address it. I also had the eggrolls which were very good. Next time I'm in the mood for Asian fusion, I'll stop by and try their dinner items.

Yelp
Stopped by here for drinks and an appetizer before catching a show at the Aztec. The happy hour specials are a good deal. I really enjoyed the highball. The old fashioned was a bit too sweet. The salmon appetizer is a skip (too much cream cheese). The staff were attentive and friendly. Although the restaurant was empty when we arrived, we were told that there were no tables available inside without reservations. Luckily it wasn't too hot that day. We sat on the patio and the view was great.

Yelp
Had a great lunch here. It's a nice space with a small but delicious lunch menu. I had the pork belly and the blistered green beans and both were delicious. The pork belly was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and served with a hoisin sauce, rice and pickled veggies. The green beans were charred perfectly and had a mild sauce and crispy shallots. Excellent! Would love to come back and try more dishes!

Yelp
This is a cozy shop with a neat bar. The seating was quite comfy. I watched through the window as a group of folks sprinted by, followed a few seconds later by a uniformed individual chasing them. However, the distraction was fleeting, and I focused on reading the menu once more. The food here is fusion. We opted for: Fist of Fury -- Rum, Lychee, Strawberry, Lime, Mint. And lots of ice. Hot Chicken Chili Dumplings -- it's described as dumplings filled with ground chicken, steamed, and served with chili oil relish. I was quite pleased with how these turned out. Thin, delicate wrappers containing chicken, along with a nice chili sauce. Think along the lines of wontons served with a slightly spicy sauce. Dashi Corn Waffle -- corn waffles topped with pork belly, grilled shrimp, Japanese BBQ sauce, Kewpie Mayo, bonito flakes. So, if you like something like okonomiyaki, you'll probably like this. Gulf Shrimp and Noodles -- grilled shrimp, vermicelli noodles, crispy garlic, shishito peppers, char siu sauce, bonito flakes. This represents a stir-fried noodle dish. Pretty standard, slightly smokey, not bad. I liked the shrimp, and I love shishito peppers, cuz you never know if you're gonna get one that'll light you up. Crispy Karaage Chicken -- tossed with tamarind-lime gastrique, furikake, serrano peppers, pickled tomatoes, cucumber, pickled squash slices. This one I thought was on the greasier side; not particularly crispy (though certain parts were crispy). I suppose that's why they were served with all the mentioned garnishes. I made sure to eat each chicken piece with some serrano pepper. The pickled squash pieces were fun, sour, and tangy, as were the tomatoes. But the chicken itself, the center part away from the sauces and other components, I felt was slightly underwhelming for a fried chicken. I'd still come here again and try out some other items.

Yelp
6/5!!! This food was SO GREAT! I am still thinking about how perfect the kim chi salad and green beans were. I am still missing that oolong tea/rye/brandy cocktail. That shrimp noodle, meringue pie, and those dumplings were amazing. Hands down, I think I could eat and drink ANYTHING from here. I strongly recommend it.

Yelp
I heard so many things about this place so I was excited to try it. As soon as I walked in, I liked the ambience, plus it was very busy, which always helps. I decided to sit at the bar and it took forever to be acknowledged by the server. I ordered the Hot Chicken Chili Dumplings and they were just okay, not too impressed. I also tried the Furikake fries and those were good.

Yelp
I came into town at 9 pm and was looking for a nearby restaurant for a late dinner. I ordered the furikake fries, which were nice and crispy and the dashi corn waffles. Both were good. If I had to critique something, I would say the dishes were a tad salty. I think if they go easy on the salt, these would be good. Service was fast. The interior is very dark. These photos were lightened with photoshop

Yelp
Looking for a great spot to eat downtown with beautiful views of the river walk? Then look no further. Inside this dimly lit and intimate spot you will find plenty of seating with a mix of tables and booths. Our server was wonderful. As first time diners he made sure to go through the menu and provide several great recommendations. Once our order was taken, our was brought out quick. The kitchen was on it! The food is a delicious mix of american comfort food and Japanese street food. Everything we sampled was delicious and but the double cheeseburger really stood out! Can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
Good but limited happy hour. Delicious snacks & tasty drinks. Good service. I recommend. Details below. 1st visit, party of two, sat at the bar on a Monday in July at 4 pm. Specifically visited to try happy hour 4-6 pm. Limited menu but enjoyed everything we ordered. Forks available if you're not a chopstick user. Bar seating is very limited. Good service. Paid Parking available in nearby garages. Riverwalk nearby. Restrooms are sub level and are odorous. Restrooms are clean; just smells bad.

Yelp
Went here for a girls night and was able to secure a table on a Saturday without making reservations ahead of time! We had a couple of cocktails and mine was the fist of fury which was really refreshing and delicious. My friend got an ube cocktail that was also sooo good! Didn't feel too boozy and the flavors really shined. As for the food the furikake fries were tasty but the furikake itself seemed to have a hard time sticking to the fries. You had to dip them and rub them into the seasoning to get the full bite. The House pickle plate looked a lot bigger in pictures but came out kind of small but was still just enough to share between 3 people and I believe is meant as a dish accompaniment. For entrees my friends had a lot of good things to say about the salmon and the chicken karrage, my entree was the gulf shrimp and noodles which was a decent portion size (family style) but in terms of flavor and everything it was just okay. Overall it was a nice experience and fun to try somewhere new but I'm not totally sure if this place won me over to become a main stay in my cocktail bar rotation.

Yelp
The food was definitely flavorful and delightfully delicious. Staff were friendly, quick and helpful with recommendations. The ambiance gave me date night vibes with candle lighting. This spot was close to where we stayed and it definitely surpassed our expectations. Great spot for a quick bite to eat-

Yelp
The food was good, there were a few items that stood out more than the others. For my drink, I got the Fist of Fury (rum, lychee, strawberry, and mint) which wasn't too strong, and it has a great balance of sweetness but not annoyingly too sweet. It actually reminds me of one of my favorite cocktails from a bar in Sacramento, but still a really yummy and light drink. Items we tried: - Brisket Egg Roll: *recommend* this was one of the highlights of our meal, but we were a little underwhelmed with it being only one egg roll for $9? Fortunately, we came during happy hour, so we didn't pay full price for this, and I don't ever will. Still a good item, but a little steep for just one.. maybe two would make a little more sense to me. I overheard the table next to us as well commenting the same thing. - Hot Chicken Chili Dumplings - *recommend* once again, another favorite of the night but $13 for three dumplings? I mean, unless the chili oil is made out of gold and the chicken is a rare species, I don't think such small dumplings should be a little over $4 piece. But, like I said we came during happy hour, so I don't think we paid full price for it. - Blistered Green Beans - "just for health" but seriously though, I really don't remember how this tasted, but I do know that I ate most of this instead of my actual main entree because it tasted better than my salmon. - Furikake Fries - this was my husband's favorite "side." Definitely ask for some spicy mayo to dip! - Crispy Pork Chop - *recommend* my husband ordered this as his main, and I think realistically we should have shared this because it was the pork chop itself was pretty big. It was giving katsu vibes, which I assume was the point because it came with some curry, so as a tradition Japanese dish of Katsu Curry. Though, the curry paired really great with the pork chop. - Grilled Salmon - this was my main, and honestly, it was nothing special. It was a bit too salt for my personal preference. I don't I would get this again. - Tokyo Tres Leches - this was good, I think it needed to be soaked a little more. Once we got to the middle of the cake, it was pretty dry.

Yelp
Tried this restaurant for lunch for my birthday and everything was impressive! The food, the decor and ambiance, and the service! The food was delicious and it's tough to find a restaurant where you want to try everything but Tokyo Cowboy is one of those rare spots for me, and I look forward to coming here again! Plus the patio view of the River Walk? *Chef's kiss* It was so peaceful and lovely out there just to birdwatch. Shout-out to our server Dez, who made our first visit incredible.

Yelp
A fusion of Asian dishes with some Texas flair makes up this snazzy downtown SA restaurant. Located a few minutes walk from the Alamo, the inside is clean and modern which is not obvious from walking down Commerce street. The portions are small but the taste is flavorful. The brisket egg roll for an app followed by the spicy pork belly, crispy chicken, Dansin corn waffle and Gulf shrimp noddles were just enough for us 4 to share for a light meal. My recommendation is If your last name is cowboy, then you might want to consider increasing the size of the portions to feed one. We sat at the bar because we were on limited time, but still managed to have a fun and pleasant dinner. Service was spot on and since the bar is located next to the kitchen, we constantly had our drinks filled. The restrooms are downstairs which are next to Hungman's bar and apparently are shared between the business, which is not uncommon for downtown. Overall, I would come again, but only if I wanted a light lunch or dinner and not on a completely empty stomach unless that is, you want to save room for desert.

Yelp
This was the first meal we had on a 3 week trip to San Antonio and it remained my favorite meal we had. My husband and I shared: - Brisket Egg Roll - Hot Chicken Chili Dumplings - Karaage - Soboro Fries - Dashi Corn Waffle - Mac & Cheese - 36 Chambers - Yuzurita Mocktail - Yuzu Meringue Pie - Tokyo Tres Leches (Strawberry Ube) My favorite item was the mac and cheese. I almost didn't order it because it sounds boring (they should really name it so it's clear it's not just regular mac and cheese), but my husband read the description. I love rice cakes and this was the perfect fusion dish. Other dishes I loved included the karaage which was so crispy and the soboro fries which had the most flavorful meat on them. The Yuzurita was also fantastic. The only thing I'd skip if I were to do it again is the Dashi Corn Waffle which was kind of dry. I highly recommend coming during happy hour because you can order off of both menus. You can save money on some dishes and order some that aren't on the dinner menu.

Yelp
First time trying Tokyo Cowboy & it was very nice! We made a reservation, which I would recommend because it is an intimate place & has limited seating. The seating is very comfortable & chic! Our waiter was very friendly & kind. We got a variety of food which we all shared & that was a great option, would do that again. The food came out promptly & was yummy! Would go back & try the steak.

Yelp
We came here on a Thursday for lunch after staying downtown for a concert. There is probably public parking nearby, but we walked from our hotel. It is pretty centrally located in downtown and was about a ten minute walk from the Hilton Palacio del Rio. It is street level, not riverwalk level. We got there a little before noon and it was already busy. We were sat right away, but groups after us had to wait a bit. The host was probably the manager and was great. He sat us and took our drink order and was constantly checking on tables our entire visit. We started with the pickle plate. It was delicious and we will get it every time we come back. It had multiple pickled vegetables: cucumbers, cabbage, squash, cauliflower, and tomatoes. I got the Tokyo dog and my wife got the sukiyaki burger. Both of our meals came with furikake fries. The burger was amazing and the hot dog was really good. The fries were crisp and were incredible dipped in the dashi jus that came with my wife's burger. We fully enjoyed all of our food. We came during lunch, so there was a limited menu. We didn't get the Asian flavors we were hoping for, but the dinner menu seems to be more along that line. The music was good and not too loud. The bathroom was down a set of stairs, but there was an outside elevator that I think went to the same level on the riverwalk

Yelp
This was the best food I had in my 6 days in San Antonio. Avoid the mediocre at best Riverwalk food and eat here. The old fashioned was one of the best and most unique I've had as well. The service was great, we had a group of 15 and made three separate 5-person reservations. They were nice enough to find a way to seat us all together.

Yelp
Tokyo Cowboy is a delicious, modern, hip, upscale Asian and Southern fusion restaurant. Some tips: make a reservation online, come for happy hour, and order Karaage, and Soboro Fries. I recommend also ordering the Hot Chicken and Chili Dumplings. Most importantly, order the Mac & Cheese. On our first visit, my wife and I ordered everything above and also Brisket Egg Roll, Dashi Corn Waffle, Yuzu-meringue Pie Tokyo Tres Leches (Strawberry Ube). For drinks we tried 36 Chambers and the mocktail version of the Yuzurita. I enjoyed everything but the recommendations I provided above were my favorite. Service was surprisingly fast for how busy it was. Very friendly.

Yelp
The name is what intrigued me, so I tried to go one night, but I was told that reservations need to be made. So, I made one at the restaurant for Sunday night. It was necessary as it was packed. I found out that downstairs by the restroom was a lounge/ bar called Hugman's Oasis (an interesting name). It might be from the same owner. We had server named Grace who was also the hostess. She did her best even with doing double duty. For the table the brisket egg roll, chicken dumplings, shrimp & noodles, tamarind crispy chicken, jasmine rice and coconut & ube tres leches cake was ordered. I really enjoyed the chicken dumplings bc it had great flavoring. I was craving noodles and this hit the mark. So delicious. The ube tres leches was so tasty and flavorful. I've never had cake like this before. I'm grateful that I was able to get a reservation here.

Yelp
The mixed drinks are really good, but pretty small. If you're used to martini style cocktails the martini glass is about 3/4 the size of typical drink. We had the brisket eggroll which ended up being our favorite dish. We also had the waffle pork belly and shrimp noodles. Both were good but pork was a little tough. The biggest minus is that the bathrooms are down below the restaurant and you have to walk down dark stairs to get there.

Yelp
Wow. I went downtown to the Market, did some shopping, was starving, checked out Yelp nearby resto's and we made the 6 block walk to Tokyo Cowboy. I ordered the fried chicken as a "shared" plate. Definitely shareable! It was insanely incredible. Every bite was a party in my mouth. I got the jalapeño side sauce (took it by chance because I hate jalapenos) but omg!!! Incredible. We also got the pork belly "shareable" plate (a little small for an entree) but omg I was in heaven. Incredible flavor. I am definitely coming back here!!

Yelp
Hell Yes!! Ride em, Tokyo Cowboy!! While it was a little hard to get a res--it was totally worth the wait! The waitstaff and hostess were wonderful! Awesome, small and cozy restaurant with a great vibe! Perfect for intimate dinner, small gatherings, girls night, etc... Try everything!! Go during happy hour and get all the things!!

Yelp
We ordered the Dashi Corn Waffle ($17), Spicy Pork Belly ($19), Crispy Karaage Chicken ($19), and the Blistered Green Beans ($12). My personal favorite was the blistered green beans. The chicken karaage and pork belly wasn't the best I ever had, but it was still good. I wish there were more veggie options that came with the main course. The portions were hefty - expect for the corn waffle. I wasn't a huge fan of it, but my dad liked it. It's not sweet like you'd expect. Foodwise, everything was decent. The server was very friendly and welcoming, and the indoor ambiance is pleasant. If it's a nice day, ask for outdoor seating. There are small tables on a balcony overlooking the river, and you can just manage to squeeze three people in.

We made a reservation and reserved TC for a dinner celebration after a college graduation. Located right on the Riverwalk, we actually found an awesome reasonable parking garage a few blocks away. First to walk in, we (party of 7) were seated at a table towards the back of the restaurant. Ordered all the Happy Hour menu items : D The hits at our table were the karaage chicken, soboro fries, and the shishito peppers. We found the cured salmon to be very bland. I had ordered a Happy Hour martini, but soon returned it as it was so bitter and strong. Our server suggested the fist of fury cocktail instead. I enjoyed it, kinda reminded me of a mojito. Thereafter, we each ordered our own plates. Pls note that most of the items are shareable plates- they don't come with any sides. The standouts for dinner were the once again karaage chicken and the double cheeseburger. Lots of flavor! The dashi corn waffle with pork belly and shrimp were ok, just a little dry. My son enjoyed the grilled salmon, but the sauce surrounding it was salty. Most of the dishes were topped with bonito flakes- dried/fermented tuna. The amount was overwhelming and overpowering , I think a sprinkle would suffice. Overall, food was ok. Cool interior decor. Service was good. Love the fusion of Asian with BBQ idea!

Yelp
Third time - and our second Valentine's Day here. Was just as great as last time! We enjoyed the new menu and loved the drinks especially! Obviously recommend reservation. But it's great they offer it because not a lot of restaurant make reservations anymore!! Service was wonderful. Had the spam musubi, chicken karage, the burger (MUST TRY) and veggie salad, chicken dumps, and yuzu pie (plz never get rid of this dessert I will cry lol) Thanks again TC!!

Yelp
Came by on a weekday during happy hour without reservation - seated right away, although it did get busy about halfway into our time there. Would be worth having a reservation if you have a larger party or come during peak hours. Service was fine and friendly. There's a tiki bar downstairs, unfortunately it was closed while we were there (bartender quit, according to our server) I tried a few menu items - happy hour fries, chili oil dumplings, Shishito peppers. Everything was fine, I wasn't blown away by anything though. Their menu is relatively small and designed to be shared. Prices were fair! Decor was nice.

Yelp
The ambiance is fantastic! We sat outside above the Riverwalk in a cozy 2 top. The menu has many interesting and unusual options that are tapas style. We enjoyed all of them but non were spectacular. The Crispy Karaage chicken was a weird spin on Sichuan chicken. Good, not great. The spicy pork belly tasted porky, it needed more sauce to offset the flavor. The brisket egg roll was great, we had a second order. Slums of Shaolin old fashioned was great!!

Yelp
If you're staying near the river walk, check this place out. There's no shortage of chain restaurant tourist trap nonsense down there, but this place is absolutely worth the trip. Had the steak and salad with a cocktail whose name I've already forgotten. Steak fell apart in my mouth and the salad was really simple but flavorful. I ordered fries which was overkill, but man ... they were good. It can be a little tricky to find from the river walk, but you can go in through a tiki bar and go upstairs to the restaurant. I tried a few flights of stairs outside without success, but I'm glad I was persistent in finding the place.

Yelp
After scouring Yelp and TikTok for San Antonio restaurant recommendations, I settled on Tokyo Cowboy for a nice, early NYE dinner. I made a reservation days in advance, anticipating big crowds, but it wasn't too busy when I arrived. The aesthetic of the place was definitely a vibe, but they tucked me into a solo bar spot in the back corner. I wasn't too upset--it was a holiday, and I was dining alone. The bartender's service was fine, but not particularly memorable or friendly. I started with two Mogwai's Night Out cocktails (minus the cucumber), and they were terrific! However, at $15 a drink, they're definitely a splurge. For an appetizer, I tried the Hot Chicken Chili Dumplings. The flavor was solid, but the portion felt skimpy--$13 for three small dumplings is a bit hard to justify. For my main course, I went with the TC Double Cheeseburger, and it did not disappoint. The egg-thickened dashi dipping sauce was a standout addition and elevated the burger to something really special. Highly recommend. Out of curiosity, I also ordered the Mac & Cheese, described as "Our take on a classic with Korean rice dumplings, spicy kimchi, topped with panko and bacon." Unfortunately, this dish was a complete miss. It was dry, lacked flavor, and felt like a chore to eat. Maybe I got a bad batch? Overall, Tokyo Cowboy is a cool spot with potential. I could see myself coming back as part of a date night or as a pregame stop before hitting the bars, but it's not a must-visit in my book.

Yelp
Service was awful ... The waiter wasn't as attentive and was chewing food when taking my order... so unprofessional. The food was meh at best with something you could probably make better at home. You will notice they seem to think sweetness in their sauce is the seceet sauce but in reality it lacks real genuine taste. The extra star is because they have a good ambiance on the river walk. That is it. So please take your money elsewhere if you are a true foodie!

Yelp
Unique Japan meets Texas fusion! Great happy hour, friendly service, tasty bar snacks, convenient location close to the riverwalk if staying downtown. With Tokyo in the name I expected some sushi options but there are none. Still worth checking out :)

Yelp
Location is key, we had lunch on the deck overlooking the riverwalk. Every dish was flavorful and mouth watering. Service was prompt and friendly. The only suggestion would be to go lighter on soy sauce for the charred green beans.

Yelp
The food was amazing! Drinks were to be admired and loved! Cody was the best server ever! And overlooking the riverwalk was the be ambiance ever!

Yelp
I kept hearing good things about this spot, and while walking around downtown San Antonio one night I accidentally stumbled upon it, and I decided I would pop in for a drink The interior is trendy and inviting. I really like the decor, light fixtures, table settings, etc. Usually these sorts of restaurant/bars are intimately lit, but this spot is slightly brighter, and it works really well. I honestly prefer it The hostess was very kind and accommodating. I sat in the bar area, so, my server was also a bartender, but he was incredible. His suggestions, his attention to detail, his personality, the professionalism, etc made my visit a good one The menu offers a wine variety of Texas/American and Japanese fusion dishes. While I only stopped in for a drink or two, I really want to come back to try the food. The cocktail menu is exceptional. Enticing recipes, with clever names, and with a fusion flare With the check they provided a Tokyo Cowboy postcard which I thought was a nice touch. I also liked that even though I was a table for one, they gave me an entire carafe of water Some tips: This spot is located right off the River walk, so, as you're exploring the city, take a break at this hip bar Cheers!!

Yelp
This spot exceeded all of our expectations and left us talking about it every day after! Can't wait to go next time we visit SA. Food: delicious and surprisingly decently priced. The serving sizes for the options on happy hour menu don't disappoint. We tried: the pickled veggies - perfectly sweet and sour balance Smoked salmon Karaage chicken Crab krab roll (that butter is out of this world) A seafood and pasta dish Multiple cocktails including one with ube/coconut. All were fantastic and presented very beautifully. Ambiance: romantic and hip. Clean environment with attention to detail. Service: very friendly and attentive Definitely make a reservation as the small dining area fills up quickly when they open. The counter is an awesome spot for date night!

Yelp
I could not have enjoyed this place more. We were in town for a wedding and were quickly intrigued when we came across this place looking for a dinner option. Located near our downtown hotel and the Riverwalk, it made a lot of sense and we were quickly impressed once we began dining. We enjoyed the cocktails and were soon drooling over the food. We agreed our favorite was the Brisket Egg Roll and my other favorite was the Crispy Karaage Chicken. The Crispy Pork Chop was really good too! Loved that apple curry. Our server was extremely nice and I feel like service was prompt, even with it being so busy on a Saturday night. We very much enjoyed our experience here.

Yelp
The first thing I should mention is to make reservations. We came on a Saturday a little before 7:30 and it didn't seem too busy but apparently all the open tables were booked reservations. They took our name down and let us know we could go to their connecting bar, Hugmans Oasis. That was fine with us, we had wanted to stop by there afterwards but I guess we were trying them out first. Side note: we had a great time there but didn't get to enjoy it as much since we had to leave once our table was ready. Once we were texted that our table was ready we took the stairs back up to the restaurant. They do have an elevator if you prefer or can't take the stairs. Let me just say Tokyo Cowboy has been at the top of my list of places to try and we finally had a chance to go for a date night/birthday dinner. It's super dim as to give a relaxing moody vibe which was nice. They sat us across the bar that had bar style seating. Not as nice as a table but was fine. We were greeted quickly and served promptly. Our server was nice check in on us a few times. The food was pretty good, we had the brisket egg rolls, blistered green beans and the grilled salmon. The egg rolls were pretty good, the herb ranch dip complimented it well. The green beans were charred and tossed in a tamarind fish caramel and black vinaigrette. The first bite was a little over powering as you are hit with a ton of flavor but as you keep eating them it gets better and went well with our choice of salmon. The Salmon was my favorite. It was cooked and flavored perfectly. The Thai basil butter really made the difference. The drinks were good and had fun names. We are Wutang fans so of course tried liquid swords and 36 chambers. We also had Kota's tea and lords of death. I really liked lords of death over all the others but it was nice to try a few different ones. Overall date night was a success. I'm glad we tried this place but nothing really compels me to comeback. BUT Hugmans, I am looking forward to going back and spending more time there. The vibe was just more enjoyable.

Yelp
I visited Tokyo Cowboy on a Monday night at 6 after avoiding Riverwalk Restaurants for a long time. I should have stuck to my golden rule. Long story short, I felt like it was elevated bar food. Great for a night out when bar hopping but not worth a trip for the food. My daughter and I enjoyed a fun night of each others company but I left wishing I'd chosen differently for our special evening. Upon entering I noticed the restaurant was overly hot. The air was on but not fully functioning. Our waitress Dez was my favorite part of the dining experience. She was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable about the menu. After asking for drink choices I picked her 3rd favorite and my daughter picked her number 1. Mine was ok. Sort of like a strawberry mojito. Almost everything I had seemed to lack the extra bit of flavor that would make it great. I ordered the brisket eggroll and blistered green beans. I really enjoyed the great beans and was happy for saving some calories. The eggroll and sauce were ok. More cheese flavor than anything with chucks of brisket. No collard green flavor from the couple of specks included. Then I had some of my daughter's pork chop. It was panko crusted, beautifully plated and hot. Bland but filling. Finally I ordered 3 chili oil dumplings. Meh . So $100+ spent for a new experience. Our next planned spot was Hugmans Oasis so I headed to the restroom. A wrong turn lead me to the balcony which was truly lovely. I'd choose to sit there as I found the inside lacking the ambience or vibe that others reported. Restrooms were individual, clean and well decorated but there was a sewer smell in the hallway. I peeked into Hugmans but the sewer smell turned me off. We went to Amy's at the Quarry for ice cream instead. I chalk Tokyo Cowboy up to another novelty Riverwalk restaurant. There are plenty of other great places downtown for great drinks and apps. Just walk down East Houston St. Or visit Southtown.

Yelp
Food is definitely fusion. Mac and cheese tasted yummy but nothing like the American version and they looked like scallop potatoes. Chicken on the salad was crispy, but the salad was a bit vinegary.
