Tokyo Japanese Steak House

This place was really cute and looked promising considering the reviews however it fell short of all expectations. The food my friend received was covered in an inedible amount of sesame seeds so she sent it back as she ordered hibachi which isn’t even supposed to come with sesame seeds and then my food came out…the udon was completely unseasoned and the chicken was RAW! We thought it was fish until we cut into a piece. We sent that back as well, cancelled her remake, tipped the server and left. Obviously don’t recommend the server did say the cook was training but not cooking chicken to temp is dangerous and unacceptable. The manager didn’t even come out and apologize but at least the server did.

No clue how this place is rated as well as it is. We both got the steak teppanyaki which was just about inedible. The sauce was reminiscent of low end Chinese takeout. The texture on the "steak" was awful - spongey. Some cheap stew meat would've been better. Server was nice but forgetful.

A good hibachi dine in place for families, group of friends, and /or meeting new people if u want too. Chicken hibachi dinner is my favorite and both the chef and waiters can make a great conversation time. Enjoy!

Dined here for a birthday celebration. Decent crowd and atmosphere. Chef and waitress were very attentive. Food was good and great portions, just a tad bit salty. Wasn’t overpowering though. I’ll return for another celebration.

We were seated right away. The chef was cooking for seven people. The rice portions are HUGE. My noodle portion was much smaller than the rice and it cost a good bit extra. The food tasted really good!! I loved the scallops and shrimp. The veggies are great and I LOVE the ginger dressing on the salad. Our chef didn’t do many tricks, didn’t toss shrimp in our mouth, wasn’t talkative. I wish he has more personality/ did more of the “fun” things you typically see when eating hibachi. We were seated towards the end of the seven people and I did notice I got less scallops and chicken than the others. I wish at least for the scallops, since you’re paying more, that you got a certain number. It was overall a good experience and the food was super tasty! I will definetly come back. The only other negative is that the chef was messy (see photo) and food was flung everywhere. I really didn’t like eating in such a messy environment.

Took a while for someone to greet us after we were seated. My initial order came out incorrect. The California rolls were bland, I don’t recommend at all. The hibachi chicken seemed extremely salty. The hibachi shrimp however was better. There was a hair in my plate, they addressed the issue and made me a new plate which was good.

Gosh, this place used to be my favorite. I loved coming here and bringing my family. Unfortunately, I’m truly grossed out after finding hair in my food. It completely ruined the experience for me, and I’m so disappointed because this used to be a spot I trusted.

Last night was the 2nd time my husband and I ate at Tokyo. First, they were unwilling to do a side order (or half) of chicken fried rice, which isn't difficult. Then our food did not come out at the same time. My husband had to ask the waiter 4 times for Yum Yum sauce. Then as I was eating, and my husband was waiting on his food, we hear loud cussing. One of the waitresses was completely snapping on a co-worker, screaming the f-word for everyone to hear. THEN she actually started HITTING the other employee! We were in shock!! A lady sitting closer to the altercation spoke up and told her to stop, but she did not stop. The "manager" that had been walking around was no where to be found. The lady went over and asked for the waitresses name and asked for the manager, who finally showed and did NOTHING. I walked over to support the other customer, since nothing was happening. I told the manager I could call the police if he couldn't handle it. He then said he would handle it, yet still just stood there. And after the lady demanding several times for the waitress to leave, she finally left. Their excuse was that the 2 employees were family members. LOL!! To put it mildly, it was ABSURD!! Even though it is a Japanese restaurant, most of the staff was Hispanic. Needless to say, we won't be back. When spending $100 for dinner, we shouldn't have to worry about anything even close to this happening! Smyrna is obviously the new Antioch!!

Once upon a time, (5 years ago) I lived near this restaurant and would go weekly! Now I'm further away and I appreciate it even more whenever I get there to eat. Normally very upbeat on the hibachi side! Typically not super busy on the weekends but the weekends are jam packed. Always a good time. Food is great and consistent! Everyone I've taken here loved it. The cocktails are typically pretty strong. Last night I got a seasonal cocktail ( Mistletoe Margarita) and it was DELICIOUS! The portions are big and the vibes are always there. This is the best hibachi in the Nashville area! Most flavorful and reasonably priced. I have tried other places and left disappointed each time.

So my friend told me that this place was great, she had come here for her bday and had a good experience. That was not the experience she and I had tonight. We decided on regular seating since hibachi was on a wait. They had to clean tables while we looked at clean ones, which is fine, but it was the first of a series of little annoyances. I asked about unsweetened tea, they confirmed they had it, mistake...it was terrible. Then when we ordered, one of which was an appetizer, they proceeded to bring all of my friend's food. Turns out they had forgot completely about the appetizer. They comped it, so it was worked out. But then I got my sushi, and it was extremely mid, which after everything was just a let down. By the end, I was just over it.

The service was great. Waiter was very attentive. Hibachi chef was one of the best I've seen and the place was beautifully decorated. The food was fantastic. Would definitely recommend.

Just called this place and told them about my Order being screwed up and he tried to blame it on delivery person. I informed him delivery picks up order that has already been bagged and stapled and does not even touch the food. Wanted order number, which I gave him and he's like 'yeah ordered spider roll and it does have fish. I informed him I've had it there several times and the only fish that's suppose to be in it is fried soft shell crab, a shellfish. I hate when a place tries to blame others and not just say 'I'm sorry we messed up your order. What can we do to fix it' or something like that. They would have a lot more satisfied customers --- I ordered the Spider roll delivered awith habachi chicken with veggies and rice. I don't know what in the world this is they sent me. Spider roll is a fried soft shell crab roll. This has no crab but lots of fish, which I can't eat. The spider roll is expensive and usually very good. To be blunt this sucks. Doesn't deserve a star. My chicken is under cooked and my veggies over cooked. We usually eat here once a month but I'm sick and hubby isn't here so I had it delivered. Will never order again from this place. My allergy to what ever this fish is sucks on top of being sick. DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY FROM HERE

We always eat inside and order hibachi dinners and always leave happy and with a ton of leftovers. Today we decided we would order hibachi dinner to go but were so disappointed that the portion to go is significantly less than what you get if you eat inside. The price is the same so I don't understand. These dinners are over $25 each so I don't get why you rip your customers off if they're ordering to go. Smh so disappointing. I don't think it's fair to rip your customers off just because they're taking their food to go. We paid $54 for this smh.

We were promptly greeted and taken to a table in the dining area since for this visit we were there for sushi. If you're there for Hibachi they'll seat you accordingly which we'll be trying out on our next visit. We went for a late lunch so the restaurant was pretty quiet. They have a cute outdoor patio area as well. Restaurant was clean and appeared well maintained. Our server was attentive and nice. Our food and drinks came out pretty quickly. Edamame was delicious as well as the miso soup and side salad with ginger dressing. We also had a total of 3 rolls which were good.

Went for NYE and loved it!! Food was amazing, service was great and can't wait to go back! Decor was fun & festive as well.

The employees were nice. Our chef was funny and friendly! He made everyone laugh. The place is attractive and the bathroom was clean. The food was delicious and plentiful. Definitely taking our family back!

This restaurant seemed to be a popular spot. There are always people there. The food is delicious and the hibachi chefs are friendly.

The inside is exactly what you should expect several Teppan grills and a small seating area for regular dining. We showed up early and did not have a wait, it does get very busy around 6 and later. We definitely had highs and lows in our experience. Service by the waiting staff was fantastic. It was a team approach, and all of them were very attentive. Our chef though, just seemed as if he was going through the motions. The fried rice was very good, and the chef gave very large portions to each of us. You will leave full. He seem to need a little extra help with the proteins though. It really didn't matter which one, the proteins all got over cooked, but then rehydrated with oil and sauce. The chicken and steak were ok that way, but shrimp you just can't recover after overcooking. I think our chef just needed some more experience.

Yummy local spot that has been in Smyrna for years. Coming here is like meal prepping for three days, but without moving your own hands. If we ever need a hibachi fix you'll catch us at Tokyo. I love coming here for a casual day or on special occasions. Not only is the food always consistent, but so is the service. My go to order is the filet mignon with fried rice. Expect to have full belly and a full to go plate too!

Dinner tonight did not disappoint!! Tokyo is THE BEST Japanese Steak House in Middle TN!! The employees are kind and courteous, the chefs put on a GREAT show and serve a tasty meal. And the sushi is fresh!! We went this past weekend and 2 people in our party have a shrimp allergy. EVERYONE (chef, servers, Hostesses, etc) were made aware and every precaution taken to keep from having cross contamination of the shrimp and the shrimp was the last item cooked on the grill. It was my birthday, so I got the drum and song from The employees which was fun! We all left with full belies, smiles on our faces and even leftovers! (My favorite!!)

Visited June 5, 2023. This establishment is located in Smyrna. The restaurant shares a parking with other bars and restaurants in the same plaza so it can be hard to finding parking during peak hours. People sometimes park in the lots across the street then walk over. I came here with my family for a birthday (party of 7 adults and 2 toddlers). For seating, guests have the option of normal dining, sushi bar top, or hibachi style. We chose hibachi style and were able to fit everyone at the grill. The dipping sauces were great and I liked their ginger salad dressing. They have many menu options to choose from and are accommodating for the vegetarian/vegan crowds. They use soft tofu for the teriyaki tofu which I find pretty tasty. The hibachi chef put on an entertaining show. At the end of the show, the cooks and servers put on a musical number to sing happy birthday to the man of the hour. The individual portions where priced adequately for the amount of food served and its taste. Overall great experience!

we waited 30 mins just for drinks then the water was tap water and it took three hours becuz our hibachi chef had no tricks and he just did a volcano staff are very slow with the bill and the food took 45 mins we came at 6:00 and left at 9:00

No parking. You need to complain to the mall owner. You are losing business. There were cars not even parked in parking spaces.

Food wss amazing, the pineapple infused Sake tasted like dessert in a cup. The staff was friendly and efficient, plus our chef was incredible!

This was my first time visiting a restaurant like this, so I don't really have anything to gauge my visit by, but I enjoyed it. The food was good and there was lots of it, but I wouldn't say it was great. The chef was good too, but it wasn't anything I hadn't seen time and again on TV and movies. I enjoyed the experience, but I doubt I'll be back.

I have no idea why this place is rated decently on Yelp and Google. My sister and younger nephews were in town and we decided to try this place. It was the worst hibachi any of us had ever had. Everything tasted so low quality, which might be why everything is overly drenched in sauce including the vegetables and rice. Pretty sure the cook was under the influence of something, which I don't really care about but, that, with the ridiculous amount of stains all over his shirt made me hesitate sitting near him when he did his knife tricks. The shirt stains are understandable with the kind of work he does, but not to THAT degree - it just added to the overall dingy vibe of the place, which was pretty gross and dirty. Just unclean and old-looking. I was there with my sister and 13 year old nephews (who will eat almost anything), and even they just stopped eating at a certain point because they couldn't force it anymore. It is just one of those really low quality places that I wouldn't recommend to anyone, especially for the price.

We had an awesome experience tonight at Tokyo Japanese Steak House! We were seated immediately, the staff were very accommodating and the food was simply outstanding!! The atmosphere inside the restaurant was beautiful, with cherry trees/blossoms throughout. The food prices were very reasonable and, honestly, I would have happily paid more for the delicious dinner we enjoyed! Five stars!!!

Enjoyabe experience! It was the end of the day, and I just wanted something different to eat. I went in thinking I was going to just purchase a small plate of food and go home. But the atmosphere was so live. So I decided to eat there. The food was very good and I had a lot left to take home.

We have been going here for years, great chef and would highly recommend the hibachi table.

I dined here with friends last night. Being Saturday, it was busy so our wait was long, but expected. I ordered gyoza and pork yaki soba. My gyoza was great. All the apps came quickly and were good. My friends' hibachi plates arrived but it took a very long time for their rice to arrive to complete their dinners. My yaki soba came at least 30 minutes after my friends' meals! The pork was terribly overcooked - inedible. The noodles were not soba noodles, but looked like angel hair spaghetti. The noodles lacked sauce. Not a great expenditure of $40+(overall). They need to do better in my opinion.

Been going to this place for 3 years never had a problem! Today in a Sunday night got a fried sushi roll that i could not bite it because of how hard it was! Our server of course was super chill about it and took it back made another but it was still not good but i decided not to complain... when leaving this other server came outside (not even our server) came outside and said something, I went back inside to see what he was trying to say, and he just said "have a good night" and i asked if thats the only thing he was trying to say, at this moment this little girl that was a host called me a bitch! And obviously i got pissed. It is ridiculous how we got treated!

4.5/5 Stars. Never been to a Hibachi grill before but the place was pretty nice. You definitely notice the staff takes pride in cleanliness. After the last guests left they cleaned the area pretty quickly and it was very neat. I'm not a big fan of Japanese Steak Houses, but I would go again for the experience and the food was pretty damn good

Food was excellent! Esp the sushi @ the little sushi bar...they served my drink there & when my table was ready at the hibachi, they moved everything for me!! Hibachi chef was funny, very talented & entertaining for the adults as well as the kiddos! Way too much food...took a lot home!

Delicious food, went home STUFFED + had leftovers. Our chef was sooo awesome, fun, and friendly, and you truly get so much delicious food for a reasonable price. It gets busy so make sure to join the waitlist! It's well worth it though.

I read all these four and five star reviews and figured this had to be a good place to eat. Obviously those who have been doing the reviews ,have never eaten at a real Japanese steakhouse. To say this place was horrible would be an understatement. I got the steak and lobster at the hibachi bar. 80% of the steak I chewed and spit out because it was all fat and inedible. I saw others order steak and they received an actual steak. I received something that looked like a quarter inch brick. Oh The lobster tail was at best three or 4 ounces. and had absolutely no taste other than the fact that the chef drowned it in seasonings and sauces They threw down a big scoop of rice, half of which was not cooked. Then another gigantic scoop of vegetables thrown over top the rice. And then your food thrown over top of that. Which turns into one gigantic mess on your plate. I went to a Japanese steakhouse ,and saw not a single person of Asian descent,. other than one bartender. That should've given me my first heads up ! I know this general area is not known for its fine cuisine, but this place is really two star at best

Food is always good. I haven't ate inside in a while but my service is nice as well. Not a fan of the hibachi experience because I don't like the fire but it's good entertainment for those that may enjoy that.

After reading previous reviews me and my girlfriend were hesitant to eat here but we had a coupon so we said why not... Well let me tell you this place is amazing the seasoning on the rice and vegetables were awesome, the prices were what you would expect and the hibachi experience was worth it. Wait time was only about 5 minutes as well. They serve the typical hibachi sides ... clear soup and salad but on your salad you can get a different dressing vs the yum yum sauce (thought that was nice touch) The most common complaint we saw was they use a lot of seasoning and sauce ( teriyaki) let me tell you that made everything waaaaaay better than we expected. Nothing had a bland taste. So ignore those reviews if you like food with flavor

This is my fav hibachi restaurant! The food proportion is generous, the food is very well seasoned and I love the culture inside the restaurant. I often talk with the cooks to get a feel of what their island is like. The pineapple saki is bomb! I love ordering the filet and lobster dinner hibachi. Ask for the spicy rice!

Been here twice and both times the food has been pretty good. Not much in the line of hibachi entertainment. It's pretty basic without any excitement. But that's ok the food is good as well as the service. As I write this I would recommend the restaurant if you are in the area.

We loved it! We found this place by accident. Trying to find a convenient place to meet friends from Nashville and us in M'boro to celebrate a birthday. This restaurant accommodated a reservation of 8 rather easily. The service, the hibachi and the food were fabulous. Reasonably priced and lunch the next day due to the large portions. We were all very impressed and just loved how delicious everything was and the staff was so friendly!! Definitely a return visit in the future!

Absolutely love this place. I typically get the steak and chicken while the wife gets the scallops. Everything is fresh and cooked right in front of you (if you choose hibachi). The chefs are really friendly and entertaining. Portion sizes definitely match the price, seeing how I can never finish my meal. All in all a great experience to have, it's really the only hibachi place I frequent. Wait staff is attentive and friendly

One of the best kept secrets in Smyrna. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere of the restaurant is good for the casual dinner or any celebration.

Where can business groups gather? Hibachi grills... Before I get into the average food and "seen it" display of the Hibachi grill chef, I will take the OP to give a nod to the health conscious of this restaurant. Outstanding job... thanks you. Now the food... not much more to say but average.. from the chef's Volcano to the over cooked steak. But the prices are reasonable and you are allowed to have a small group around the table. TJS you get 3 stars because of your staff is fantastic, your attention to the health issues and you make great drinks from the bar. Good luck and thank you for trying to stay in business and keep people safe.

Horrible, disgusting, filthy, and racist! We arrived here first and fortunately we didn't have to wait they sat us right away. The hibachi tables are in a c shape so we were on one side and there was another family on the other. Nobody was in the middle. They took our orders and started off with our egg drop soups until this server lady came and started moving everything almost throwing she was grabbing my brothers phone and keys and moving them away and then aggressively asked if anyone was sitting there my brother said no so ofc she brought in ANOTHER family in the middle and we had to share the table with this other family what's even worse was that this family was Hispanic and we noticed that they just causally put two Hispanic families together and I think that's pretty racist .We had to wait almost an hour because the other family had to order then get their soups and salads. While we were getting salads they brought all of ours except my brothers and he had to ask multiple times until finally he got his salad. The hibachi experience was normal everything was right he did the trick and it was cool but of course the other family had to bring a little girl that was scared of fire I mean there's nothing wrong with that's but like why bring her to hibachi if she's scared of fire we got less of a show no thanks to her and basically every trick after she started crying was aimed towards her like as if he was only doing a show to her and her family and not to us even tho we were there first. Now the was pretty good but I must say that the egg to rice ratio was off and I would've appreciated a little more egg but that's ok I guess. When he was making our rice I don't know if the other guy in the other family payed him or something but he clearly very very clearly gave the other family more rice and it was obvious my whole family saw it!!! The food was ok and everything but it could have been A LOT better if it wasn't for that dirty, disgusting, mucky, crusty, icky, nasty, revolting, sickening, nauseating, heinous family. The place overall really dirty, almost as if the paint was coming off the walls!!! I will not be coming back here ever!!!!!!
