I've had this place on my short list for years since I moved back to Michigan, but was always doing something else and never had the time to squeeze it in. Factor in the pandemic and all that jazz, I finally made it down to see what it's all about. I was very happy with my experience!
Pulling up, it really is the spitting image of the DIA from the outside. Limestone building with a nice collection of of garden sculptures that I looked at even in the cooler weather. While the museum is free even for us out of state folks, parking isn't. It's an $8 fee which is reasonable. I was able to pull into a covered spot and it was close to the entrance which was awesome! They also have EV parking here, which I love. I guess you pay the $8 parking fee when you arrive into the check in area which is nice, and show the stub to the attendant when you leave. Fair enough.
The museum is mostly on the second floor. I was going to dock a star for this but passed because I can't be to hard on an art museum and all. But, there was no maps of the place either offered to me or at the counter. It wasn't until later I realized I could scan a QR code to download one to my phone, but between pictures and instagram, I found that to be a total waste and would have rather have had a map in hand. Plus, I'm sometimes bad about charging my phone, so that's an issue as well.
Anyway, the museum itself I found out is mostly upstairs. They have a great collection of such nice art here! Paintings from all sorts of artists, sculptures, furniture, and so much more. It was a lot of paintings, and I loved seeing so many from different eras and parts of the world. Even monet! YES.
There was a beautiful collection of what seemed like Italian era stuff. Pillars, stained glass, you felt like you were walking into Rome 1000 years ago. Loved it. Staff here is fabulous and knowledgeable, and really helpful. Also, if you walk across the street, there's a small but eclectic glass collection they have going on. Absolutely fabulous. It's not huge by any stretch of the imagination, maybe 30 minutes tops, one level. It's free, of course, but very beautiful to look at.
I know Toledo is Toledo, but this is one of their shining parts of the city. It's really worth the quarter tank of gas to drive down here and check it out. Grab lunch while you're here, and you'll thank me later!
