Where to Taste Tasmania's Wine and Food From Launceston to Hobart

"Reputed for earthy Pinot Noirs that show cranberry and orange-peel flavors, this producer inspired a pilgrimage for its distinctive cool-climate expression of the variety." - Betsy Andrews

Interview: Michael Hill Smith MW on the evolution of wine - SilverKris

"Located in Tasmania’s Coal Valley and purchased 22 years after his first winery, Tolpuddle continues to be managed with a strong focus on vine and soil health and sustainable practices; Hill Smith defines sustainability as respect for the environment, reducing one’s footprint and leaving vineyards in better condition than when taken over. Tolpuddle carries his chardonnay label as well, reflecting the same evolution toward cooler-climate expression, less new oak and greater complexity that he pursues at Shaw + Smith." - SilverKris

Brilliant experience and even better service recovery! We booked in for an afternoon tasting a month or so in advance, and on the way there got a call from the lovely Pip who said due to the gale-force winds (which were pretty full-on that day!) their door needed to be repaired and there’d be some noise during our tasting, and would we like to go ahead, move to the winery shed or rebook to the next day? We went ahead (there was a bit of noise, it was fine) and they refunded our tasting without asking! Brilliant service recovery for something that was entirely out of their control. The wines (2024 & 2018 vintages) were great - the quality you expect from Tolpuddle. The food was equally good. Highly recommended experience.

Went to a wine tasting in this brand new cellar door where they were pouring current vintage Pinot Noir and Chardonnay alongside the 2018 vintages. I’m usually not big on Pinot Noir, but I’ve got to say, it was seriously good. Smooth, layered, and really well done. The Chardonnay was a highlight too. Super elegant, buttery, with just the right touch of oak and some nice stone fruit vibes. The cellar door also has small dishes which is really tasty. Overall, a great tasting experience!

Just wanted to say how terrific it was and a privilege to visit Tolpuddle Vineyard recently. It goes without saying that the wine, food and setting were each very inspiring in their own way. It was wonderful to be greeted on arrival and my host who took me through the tasting session was most helpful, pleasant and very knowledgable. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the tasting menu was nothing short of superb and the food was cleverly matched and delicious.

It’s just a wonderful experience. The location and wines are exceptional. I was lucky enough to have Pip guide me through the history and oenological gems of the site and owners which was fascinating. Gotta love Tassie with its people and produce which are world beating!

Fabulous tasting of pinot noir and Chardonnay. 2023 & 2018 years. Added a few small plates and was a lovely relaxed tasting and lunch. Pip and Sam both very informative. Tasting room is a lovely building too

An exceptional wine tasting experience with delicious small plates matched to the wines. We enjoyed Sam’s guidance through the tasting and selection of menu items to suit. The scallops were sensational, duck terrine a standout with the Pinot.
