California Cheese Trail: How to Plan the Best Trip to Sonoma and Marin | Eater SF

"After restoring their rundown farm, Tamara Hicks and David Jablons opened Toluma Farms in 2007 as a sheep and goat dairy that now produces eight seasonal cheeses, including Kenne (a soft bloomy rind goat cheese) and Bossy (a soft cow cheese named “in honor of bossy females everywhere who get shit done”); tours are offered the first Sunday of each month and tickets—available in advance on the farm website—cost $40 per adult, $5 per child, with children under 5 free." - Marisa Churchill

James Beard’s Fabulous 1950s Food Tour of America’s West Coast | Eater

"A small Tomales farm and creamery where an introduced washed‑rind cheese called Teleme—subtly elastic with a milky tang and a thin, rice‑flour‑dusted crust—struck the traveler as having the polish of old French cheese yet born of American terroir, revitalizing his appreciation for pastoral landscapes and locally made dairy." - John Birdsall

Their public tour is a tourist trap. Don't do it unless you don't have anything better to do. We only got to see one milking station, one tank for processing the milk, and a bunch of goats that weren't interested in the kales we gave them. It was a long hike uphills to see the goats that we could easily see everywhere else or in SF zoo. For those with knees and hips problems , this is not a good hike. No peek at cheese making or other animals except a couple of farm dogs. (Update: We stayed till the end of the tour and we were among the last who left and yet there was no mentioning of cheese making, unlike what the host responded in their comment.) The cheese tasting was a JOKE!!! 20 people shared two platters of charcuterie on their patio where flies hovered over the whole time. (The flies were also over the foods on their kitchen counter.) By the time we got to the charcuterie, it was already a mess! All these cost us $20 per person. Not worth it. Not worth the time and efforts of driving there. Don't trust the description on their website. Don't waste your money and time!!

We had an amazing experience at Toluma Farms! We were a group of four friends visiting from Pittsburgh who were interested to learn about local agriculture and food. Everyone was so welcoming. David gave us a tour and shared his knowledge about goat farming, cheese making, and the local area. Tamara served us a beautiful, delicious cheese board at a table with the most amazing view. And playing with the goats was a highlight of our trip. Highly recommend a visit and tour!

Google
We’ve visited Toluma twice now and can’t recommend it enough. Their goat yoga class was fun and the goats were beyond cute. We returned for a tour and to play with the baby goats and learned so much about the farm, community, and finished the visit with some delicious cheese. Highly recommend!

We went here for a large group party and it couldn’t have been any more amazing. We got to play with and hold like 100 baby goats, and then we got to have a selection of some of their gorgeous homemade cheeses. Incredible experience.

Google
We had the BEST experience. The delicious cheese, the wonderful hosts… not to mention the CUTEST goats. Forget Vegas, best Bachelor Party experience I’ve ever had. Hope to visit again soon!

Google
Lovely local farm Airbnb with a beautiful large house that sleeps more than 10 people and has amenities like a hot tub, several large decks, tons of indoor and outdoor seating, and a fully stocked kitchen. We had the opportunity to visit with goats (including babies!), sheep, watch milking and cheese being made, and do a loop hike of the property. The onsite staff are very friendly.

Google
Truly the best experience! Tamara and crew were so generous and welcoming and not only nourished us with delicious food, but also with such interesting stories and knowledge about their work. Fully recommend visiting them!

Booked a private tour for June 14, 2025 at 1:00 and was charged $300. We arrived by 12:40 as instructed. Nobody was there except for one guy creeping around who wouldn't engage and actually hid from us!

Yelp
What an amazing experience! For $40, you get to explore the farm, meet baby goats, learn more about the milk and cheese process, and enjoy a fantastic charcuterie board at the end. The goats are adorable. They are not scared of people at all. They ran up to us when we entered their area, and even withstood the hands of excited kids. The sheep were curious and bleated a lot. It was really informative to see the sheep being milked, and learning about the cheese-making process. It's clear that everyone involved in this operation is passionate about animals and farm life. The owners, Tamara and David, were so nice to talk to. I especially liked that they acknowledged the native land and are committed to reducing waste as much as possible, from having the water go up to the irrigation system, to make a delicious bagel chips from their stale bagels. The charcuterie experience at the end was so tasty. They give so much food, and you can also buy more cheese just to bring home. We got a block for $15. It was cool to eat the cheese when you literally saw the process of its creation minutes prior. You're able to bring doggie bags home as well. Don't even get me started on how beautiful the house is. I cannot recommend visiting this farm enough. It's great to go on a date, with family, friends, kids, etc. Make a trip out of it and visit Hog Island Oysters, the Point Reyes Lighthouse, Brickmaiden Breads, or other great businesses in the area!

Yelp
This tour was a great event as part of a trip for me, my wife, our infant son and a few friends gathering in Point Reyes from San Francisco for hiking, animals and resting over cheese. Dr. David Jablons gave an amazing and very educational tour. He is a UCSF thoracic surgeon by day, so I received the most "high yield" knowledge about farming I've ever heard. He gets into the interesting technical details of running an animal welfare certified dairy - one of maybe 40 in the world - and how you can operate with industrial equipment and health practices while prioritizing the well being of the animals. The cheese tasting at the end gives you generous portions of award winning product you ordinarily have to get from Daily Driver (his bagel shop) or Californios. For cheese gourmands this is very specialized in young & lightly aged goat and sheep cheeses that were optimized around the terroir of Point Reyes and the tastes of their on site cheese maker and visiting apprentices. To maximally enjoy your tasting bring some mead to share; fermented foods to spread; and your favorite bread. While all this stuff is provided it's cool to get the opinions of food makers on your favorite delicacies and pick their brains over a relaxing feast.

Yelp
The tour - $35 every first Sunday of the month Your hosts - Tamara and David Jablons, charismatic and affable owners of the farm What you get - A fun, engaging walk around the farm, a meet and greet with the does and kids and a lovely afternoon cheese tasting curated by Tamara The cheese - Some of the best goat-based dairy products I've ever come across. I have a special place in my heart for their fresh farmer's cheese Liwa (mild, clean, almost minty) and the triple goat/sheep/cow soft cheese Teleeka (bold, earthy and nutty). All of them are wonderful, organic and reasonably priced! (~$15) Would definitely go back.

Yelp
If you find yourself exploring the cheese trail in Marin County, definitely make an appointment to tour the Tomales Farmstead Creamery. Maybe if you're lucky, you will meet Winnie the Border Collie and she will lead you through the farm to find the goats. If you're even luckier, as the herd runs toward you after weeks of rain in Northern California, you might just see a rainbow! On the tour you will learn about their sustainable farming methods and all of the work they are doing to prevent erosion and restore creeks and watersheds, tour the milking parlor, explore the pastures where the goats and sheep freely roam, learn their organic pasture methods, take a look inside the creamery and don't forget the best part... CHEESE TASTING!!! This place is truly fantastic! They have certifications in Animal Welfare and Humane treatment of animals. They know each of their animals by name... Happy animals make the best cheese and the cheese makes me really really happy!

Yelp
The two stars are no reflection at all on the creamery. It's only open by reservations, so we didn't get to see it or taste the cheese.

Yelp
Tucked away in beautiful West Marin farm country, Toluca Farms lovingly crafts their amazing cheeses. The thought of sheltering in place without local artisanal cheese to eat is to painful to even contemplate. I was wise to stop in on my way home from work yesterday (probably my last for a while) and grab a chunk of their flagship Teleeka, a soft ripened goat, sheep, cow blend. It's spectacular with a soft rind and slightly chalky interior consistency. The flavor is rich, creamy and slightly tart, depending on age. Everybody at the farm is always friendly including the dogs.

Yelp
We did the cheese tour which is 1st Sunday of each month, $30/pp. The tour really is for the animals to get used to being around humans! We got to meet 50 baby goats who are amazing! Tasted a large tasting of various goat cheeses which were all delicious. Highly recommended especially on a beautiful fall day.

Yelp
Spent an amazing afternoon touring the farm with Jacob as our guide. Got to cuddle baby goats, tons of them everywhere, some just born. Watched sheep get milked, learned all about the farm and cheese making process. The cheese is delicious! The air bnb house on property is really lovely, hope to come back to stay one day. Thank you for a splendid afternoon!
